Aspergillus Nidulans Septa Are Indispensable For Surviving Cell Wall Stress, Ryland N. Spence, Walker Huso, Harley Edwards, Alexander Doan, Samantha Reese, Steven D. Harris, Ranjan Srivastava, Mark R. Marten
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Septation in filamentous fungi is a normal part of development, which involves the formation of cross-hyphal bulkheads, typically containing pores, allowing cytoplasmic streaming between compartments. Based on previous findings regarding septa and cell wall stress, we hypothesized that septa are critical for survival during cell wall stress. To test this hypothesis, we used known Aspergillus nidulans septation-deficient mutants (ΔsepH, Δbud3, Δbud4, and Δrho4) and six antifungal compounds. Three of these compounds (micafungin, Congo red, and calcofluor white) are known cell wall stressors which activate the cell wall integrity signaling pathway (CWIS), while the three others (cycloheximide, miconazole, and 2,3-butanedione monoxime) …

Understanding The Impact Of Collective Efficacy And Race/Ethnicity On Child Internalizing And Externalizing Symptomatology, Demy Alfonso
Understanding The Impact Of Collective Efficacy And Race/Ethnicity On Child Internalizing And Externalizing Symptomatology, Demy Alfonso
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Neighborhood collective efficacy has emerged as an important predictor of mental health problems, specifically internalizing and externalizing behaviors, among adolescents. Existing research has shown that the association between collective efficacy and mental health problems may differ according to the child’s racial or ethnic background. The present study used structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the direct associations between collective efficacy at age 9 and internalizing and externalizing symptoms at age 15, while controlling for several demographic variables. Subsequently, a multigroup SEM approach was utilized to explore whether associations between neighborhood collective efficacy at age 9 and externalizing and internalizing symptoms …
Analyzing Multistationarity In A Model Of A Dual Phosphorylation Network, Killian Kearney Anderson
Analyzing Multistationarity In A Model Of A Dual Phosphorylation Network, Killian Kearney Anderson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Otero-Muras, Banga, and Alonso in [18] state biological reaction systems exhibit multistationarity, a system with at least two positive steady states. According to Otero-Muras,Banga, and Alonso in [18], initial conditions within the system, however, dictate the number of stable states in that system. Furthermore, multistationarity is an important componenet present in biological reaction systems that manage cellular responses [18]. Signal pathways regulating cell maturation, cell replication, and cell death rely on such systems [18]. Given the importance of multistationarity in biological reaction systems, it is necessary to construct a mathematical model, one in which multistationarity will be configured. More importantly, …
Representations And Perceptions Of Sexual Pleasure In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology (A&P) Courses, Brenda Kucha Anak Ganeng
Representations And Perceptions Of Sexual Pleasure In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology (A&P) Courses, Brenda Kucha Anak Ganeng
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The World Health Organization defines sexual pleasure as an important part of positive sexual experiences and sexual health. Despite its importance, sexual pleasure is often omitted from sexual health programming and curricula. Undergraduate human anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses serve as avenues where students who intend to go into health care learn foundational knowledge about human body systems and health; however, to our knowledge, there has been no documentation of if and how A&P students learn about sexual pleasure. A&P textbooks serve as an important resource for curriculum design and learning. I sought to answer the following research question: How …
Transgenerational Effects Of Chronic Preconception Stress On Developmental And Health Outcomes In Prairie Vole Offspring: Potential Mediation By Parental Emotionality, Mother-Father Bond, Or Parental Care Quality, W. Tang Watanasriyakul
Transgenerational Effects Of Chronic Preconception Stress On Developmental And Health Outcomes In Prairie Vole Offspring: Potential Mediation By Parental Emotionality, Mother-Father Bond, Or Parental Care Quality, W. Tang Watanasriyakul
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Background: A positive rearing environment is important for the health and well-being of growing offspring. Chronic parental stress can create a toxic rearing environment, which may impair developmental and sociobehavioral outcomes of the offspring. Specifically, parental stress is linked to unstable parental emotionality, tension between mother and father, and poor parenting quality, although the inter-relatedness of these factors and the mechanisms through which they contribute to the outcomes of the offspring need further investigation. The current study investigated developmental and sociobehavioral outcomes in prairie vole offspring exposed to chronic preconception stress, with parental emotionality, strength of mother-father bond, and parental …
What Mother Meant: Maternal Competence, Medical Authority, And Memory In The Case Of Mary Bickerdyke (1820-1910), Megan Marie Vangorder
What Mother Meant: Maternal Competence, Medical Authority, And Memory In The Case Of Mary Bickerdyke (1820-1910), Megan Marie Vangorder
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Mary Ann Bickerdyke, a poor widowed mother from Galesburg, Illinois, cared for sick and wounded soldiers across the Western theater throughout the course of the American Civil War. As a result of her efforts, authors and historians lauded her accomplishments. Her success as a Civil War nurse and Sanitary Commission agent has been the subject of several biographies and young adult books that idealize the role of women during the war. These portrayals suggest that Mary Bickerdyke provided an example of determined professionalism during the war years.
Those histories, however, do not tell the whole story. Mary Bickerdyke’s professional journey …

An Examination Of Observed Maternal Social Coaching Strategies And Early Adolescents' Social Adjustment, Natalie Low
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This observational investigation had two aims. The first aim was to examine the direct associations between maternal social coaching strategies and adolescents’ social outcomes. The second aim was to assess whether adolescents’ trait perspective taking and empathic concern are moderators of the relationship between maternal social coaching strategies and adolescents’ social outcomes. Sixty-four early adolescents (Mage=12.38 years old) and their primary female caregiver participated in the study. The majority of caregivers were biological mothers (n = 61). The sample consisted of 41 girls (64.1%) and 23 boys (35.9%). Mothers and their early adolescents were video recorded discussing typical hypothetical peer-related …
Not A Good Fit For The Job: An Intersectional Study Of Occupational Stereotypes In The Field Of Technology, Jesus Jose Martinez
Not A Good Fit For The Job: An Intersectional Study Of Occupational Stereotypes In The Field Of Technology, Jesus Jose Martinez
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Occupational stereotypes are preconceived notions about specific occupations, the people in those occupations, or one’s fit with an occupation (Lipton et al., 1991). Previous studies of occupational stereotyping have been useful to understand the impact of single demographic characteristics (e.g., gender; King et al., 2006) and multiple demographic characteristics (i.e., race-gender interaction; Bertrand & Mullainathan, 2004) on hiring preferences. A set of three studies were conducted to expand the field’s understanding of fit with occupational stereotypes as a mechanism of discrimination toward multiple combinations of social groups in the technology field.
The goal of the first study was to establish …

Comparison Of Topsoil Moisture In E3sm Model Simulations And In-Situ Observations Over Illinois, Jacinda Lee Mayer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Soil moisture stimulates land-atmosphere interactions by modifying energy and water fluxes in the boundary layer and it plays an important role in climate change studies. The objective of this research is to quantify the spatial and temporal variations of the Illinois Climate Network’s (ICN) observed topsoil moisture, as well as evaluate how accurately the new climate model, E3SM, is simulating soil moisture compared to the observed data during 2003-2014. Observed topsoil moisture averaged over growing season during the 12-year period indicates a general dry-north and wet-south pattern in Illinois, and northeast and southwest become drier with the progression of the …
Writing In Film Studies: Poetics And Pedagogy, Bryan Mead
Writing In Film Studies: Poetics And Pedagogy, Bryan Mead
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation is writing instruction inside undergraduate film courses. While the existence of textbooks devoted to teaching students how to write about film highlights the need for such instruction, evidence suggests many courses underuse or neglect such texts. Instead, most instructors focus their efforts on content instruction, expecting students to translate an increased content knowledge into written argumentation. Yet, as is the case across the disciplines, students struggle to write successfully in these disciplinary courses. One of the main reasons for this disparity between instructor expectation and student success is the notion of disciplinarity, and how influential …

An Observational Study Of Maternal Parenting Behavior And Adolescent Social Anxiety, Cassandra R. Mick
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Parenting behaviors, especially maternal parenting behaviors, have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of adolescent Social Anxiety Disorder and its symptoms for decades. Following calls from meta-analyses and literature reviews for observational measurement of parenting behaviors and preliminary results from a pilot study reviewed here, this investigation sought to evaluate the utility of the undermining autonomous relatedness (UAR) index of the Autonomy and Relatedness Coding System as a path through which maternal social anxiety symptoms are transmitted to adolescents. A racially and socioeconomically diverse sample of 64 early adolescents (Mage = 12.37; 53.1% White; 64.1% female) and their mothers …
Development Of Ph-Sensitive And Amine-Reactive Lifters For The Detection Of Latent Fingermarks, Andrei Gregory Mlakar
Development Of Ph-Sensitive And Amine-Reactive Lifters For The Detection Of Latent Fingermarks, Andrei Gregory Mlakar
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Latent fingermarks are among the most common forms of physical evidence left at crime scenes. Being composed largely of eccrine and sebaceous secretions, they are typically invisible unless they are treated with, e.g., powders or cyanoacrylate fumes. Drawbacks to these and other commonly used methods, however, may include limited substrate compatibility, safety hazards, inability to detect older marks, and the need for expensive instrumentation and expert practitioners. Fingermarks on curved, reflective, patterned, or luminescent substrates are particularly challenging to image with most common techniques. After treatment, fingermarks on such difficult substrates may be transferred to, or “lifted” by, flexible adhesives, …
Controlling Women’S Appetites: Food And Femininity In Victorian Literature, Elizabeth Murray
Controlling Women’S Appetites: Food And Femininity In Victorian Literature, Elizabeth Murray
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This project contributes to the growing field of feminist food studies by examining Victorian women’s relationships to food. I argue that beginning at a young age Victorian middle-class girls and women had to learn to regulate their appetites and eating as a way of performing “proper” Victorian femininity. Chapter one explains why the Victorian period, the middle-class, and women are apt subjects for a feminist food studies exploration of literature and culture. The second chapter discusses non-fiction advice literature that includes guidance about how middle-class girls and women should eat and control their bodies as part of their performance of …
Characterization And Quantification Of Far Red Oxygen Production Rates In Acaryochloris Spp., Jose Manuel Orench-Benvenutti
Characterization And Quantification Of Far Red Oxygen Production Rates In Acaryochloris Spp., Jose Manuel Orench-Benvenutti
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Oxygenic photosynthesis is one of the primary metabolisms on Earth responsible for the evolution of complex life. Its advent around the Archean steadily increased Earth’s atmospheric oxygen from negligible amounts to biologically impressive quantities. Atmospheric oxygen is the sole result of billions of years of biological oxygenation and no abiotic process can account for its high presence in the Earth’s atmosphere. Understanding its origins and evolution can lead us to better understand Earth’s biological history and the possibility of analogues elsewhere. A research path that could lead to answers is comparing distinct incorporations of photopigments in various oxygenic phototrophs. In …
Monitoring Plants Growth In Indoor Vertical Farms Using Computer Vision And Ai Techniques, Bhama Krishna Pillutla
Monitoring Plants Growth In Indoor Vertical Farms Using Computer Vision And Ai Techniques, Bhama Krishna Pillutla
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Climatic conditions like temperature, drought, and heavy metals disturb plant cell structures and, ultimately, plant growth that significantly affects crop production. Due to increasing climate change, maize crop yields are projected to decline by 24% by the end of century. With the increase in food demands and decrease in agricultural land and water resources, the space for effective farming is left much desired. Though limited to a few crops at this moment, Indoor Vertical Farming is one technique that requires much less land space, water, soil, and sunlight when compared to traditional farming. Vertical farming allows artificial control of temperature, …
Low-Head Dam Removal Increases Functional Diversity Of Stream Fish Assemblages, Adam Christopher Jones
Low-Head Dam Removal Increases Functional Diversity Of Stream Fish Assemblages, Adam Christopher Jones
Masters Theses
Despite the growing number of dam removals to date, very few have been studied to understand their impacts on stream fish communities. Despite being the most common type of dam in the U.S., an even smaller proportion of studies focus on the impacts of low-head dam removals, instead, focusing on the impacts of removal of larger dams. In this study, two previously impounded Illinois rivers were monitored to assess the impacts of low-head dam removal on the functional assemblage of stream fishes. This was accomplished by aggregating fishes into habitat and reproductive guilds, relating community changes to habitat, environmental metrics, …

Self-Compassion And Emotion Regulation As Predictors Of Disordered Eating, Mandira Srivastava
Masters Theses
Disordered eating attitudes and behaviors are becoming widespread, with individuals employing maladaptive compensatory strategies to cope with the distress and dissatisfaction with themselves that they face. Emotion regulation and self-compassion, both are well-researched areas, with their relationships with disordered eating also being an emerging area of interest. However, there is limited literature that has examined the relationships among the three constructs, wherein it has been reported that self-compassion and emotion regulation serve as predictors of disordered eating in individuals. The goal of this study was to look at the connections between emotion regulation and disordered eating, self-compassion and disordered eating, …

A Study Of Π – Π Stacking Interactions In Rhenium Carbonyl Complexes Based On Backbone Functionalized Bis(Pyrazolyl)Methane Ligands, Balamani Guduru
Masters Theses
π – π Stacking interactions are one of the most important non-covalent inter-molecular forces, which play an important role in the architecture of 1D and 2D networks of supramolecular chemistry. This associative contact involves the attractive interactions of aromatic molecules with each other. To describe and study the strength of the π – π stacking interactions, four new bis(pyrazolyl)ethanamine ligands having different aromatic groups (1-pyrenyl, 1-naphthyl, 2-naphthyl, and 9-anthracenyl) known for their propensity to be involved in π – π stacking interactions were prepared by the reaction of one equivalent of bis(pyrazolyl)ethanamine with one equivalent of the corresponding aromatic aldehyde. …

Identification And Cloning Of Transcripts From Triterpenoid-Induced Neuronal Outgrowth In Neuro-2a Cells From Mus Musculus, Meshael Alrashidi
Masters Theses
Neurodegenerative diseases severely reduce quality of life and are often responsible for the death of those suffering from them. In addition to the societal toll these diseases inflict on populations, the health care costs are estimated to be hundreds of billions of dollars annually for the U.S. alone. Unfortunately, direct pharmacological treatment for some of the most common of these diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, remains elusive. Traditional medicine in China and India have recommended a variety of plants for preventing and treating these diseases. For example, Centella asiatica (L.) Urban, also knows as Gotu Kola, is believed to treat and …
Structural Basis Of Bacterial Flagellin For Naip5 Binding And Nlrc4 Inflammasome Activation And The Mechanism Of Flagellin Induced Release Of Cytokines In Vivo, Jian Cui
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The bacterial flagellum is a whip-like structure that protrudes from the cell membrane and is one of the most complex and dynamic biological molecular machines that propels bacteria to swim toward beneficial environments and the sites of infection. It is composed of a basal body, a hook, and a long filament. The flagellar filament contains thousands of copies of the protein flagellin (FliC) monomer arranged helically and ending with a filament cap composed of oligomer protein FliD. The overall structure of the filament core is preserved across bacterial species, while the outer domains exhibit high variability, and in some cases …
Mechanism Of Antibiotic Permeability Through The Gram-Negative Bacterial Envelope, Olaniyi Alegun
Mechanism Of Antibiotic Permeability Through The Gram-Negative Bacterial Envelope, Olaniyi Alegun
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria (GN) makes them distinct among superbugs that are associated with the development of antibiotic resistance. The outer membrane, and inner membrane, separated by the periplasm, form a double-membrane barrier to the entry of antibiotics into the cell. Several studies have been conducted to examine the role of outer membrane modifications such as porins, lipopolysaccharides, and efflux pumps on antibiotic resistance. However, there is a paucity of knowledge on how antibiotics behave in the periplasm, to gain access into their target region. My thesis focuses on understanding the mechanism of antibiotic permeability through the cellular …
Antibiotic Permeation In Gram-Negative Bacteria And Contribution Of Inflammasome Activation And Pyroptosis In Pathogenesis Of Salmonella Systemic Infection, Ankit Pandeya
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Antibiotic resistance is one of the major global issues in the field of public health and medicine. Good antibiotic candidates need to be selectively toxic, inhibit cellular target, and effectively penetrate and accumulate in bacterial cells. The last factor is a formidable barrier in the development of antimicrobials effective in Gram-negative bacteria, due to the presence of two layers of cell envelope. The first half of my thesis focuses on understanding the permeation of small molecules through this formidable cell envelope, distribution inside the cell of Gram-negative bacteria, and design of novel methods to make small molecules effectively cross the …
