Evaluation Of A Process Change On Mammography Screening Rates In A Family And Community Medicine Clinic, Christina Rademaker

DNP Projects

Abstract

Background and Significance: Breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Mammography is a screening approach used in the detection of breast cancer and proven to help reduce mortality. Only 72.8% of eligible American women have been screened for breast cancer within the past 2 years. One urban family and community medicine clinic (FCM) fell below the national average with a rate of 60.9%; as a result, they implemented an evidence-based strategy to improve mammography rates within the clinic.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of a telephone …

Effects Of An Educational Module On Perceived Knowledge, Perceived Barriers, And Attitudes Related To Sleep-Promoting Practices Among Bedside Nursing Staff Within A Medical Intensive Care Unit, Arden Gross

DNP Projects

Background: Adult patients in the critical care setting are at risk for experiencing sleep disruption due to critical illness and environmental factors. The effects of disruption to the sleep/wake cycle has been associated with dysregulation of biological processes such as healing and immune system functioning. Current literature includes the use of sleep-promoting protocols that aim to reduce environmental disruptors of sleep in the critical care setting. However, there is a disconnect between the perceived importance of sleep and clinical practice. Additionally, there is a gap in literature exploring the effects of educational-modalities on nursing staff knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes related …

The Site Evaluation Of Quercus Alba Metabolites, Zachary Alexander Byrd Jan 2022

The Site Evaluation Of Quercus Alba Metabolites, Zachary Alexander Byrd

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Quercus alba has been the prominent tree species utilized in the spirits industry for decades. Of its many qualities, the ability to impart desirable flavors on spirits combined with its natural abundance makes it the ideal choice for barrels. Creating barrels is a uniform process, but variability still exists in aged spirits even when all other parameters are controlled. In this thesis, I explore how the origin of Quercus alba influences metabolite variability.

Quercus alba is a resilient species that can grow in many climates. This is seen through Quercus alba’s vast growing range, of which barrel quality white oak …

Quantifying Crop Phenology For Food Sustainability Under Climate Change: Integration Of Remote Sensing, Machine Learning, And Ecosystem Modeling, Yanjun Yang Jan 2022

Quantifying Crop Phenology For Food Sustainability Under Climate Change: Integration Of Remote Sensing, Machine Learning, And Ecosystem Modeling, Yanjun Yang

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Climate change is projected to continue and accelerate significantly in the future if global greenhouse gas emissions are not curbed. Previous studies have shown that crop growth and production in agroecosystems are primarily determined by the weather conditions over the growing season. Crop phenology represents one of the most critical indicators in determining crop yield and adjusting the adaptation of crops to climate change. It provides essential information for monitoring and modeling crop growth dynamics and productivity. Therefore, understanding and quantifying the impacts of climate change on crop phenology and then agricultural production is crucial to formulate feasible climatic adaptation …

Regulatory Mechanisms In Arabidopsis Embryogenesis, Sanjay Joshi Jan 2022

Regulatory Mechanisms In Arabidopsis Embryogenesis, Sanjay Joshi

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Plants have amazing regeneration properties with single somatic cells, or groups of cells able to give rise to fully formed plants. One means of regeneration is Somatic Embryogenesis (SE), by which an embryonic structure is formed that “converts” into a plantlet. Somatic embryogenesis has been used as a model for zygotic processes that are buried within layers of maternal tissues. Understanding mechanisms of somatic embryo induction and development are important as a more accessible model for seed development. We rely on seed development not only for most of our caloric intake, but also as a delivery system for engineered crops …

The Impact Of Plant Secondary Metabolites On Auxin And Cytokinin Signaling, Timothy E. Shull Jan 2022

The Impact Of Plant Secondary Metabolites On Auxin And Cytokinin Signaling, Timothy E. Shull

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Secondary metabolites are a broad class of specialized compounds that mediate plant-environment interactions and mitigate stress. It is increasingly clear that many phenylalanine-derived secondary metabolites are nearly indispensable for plant survival and that plants adjust their growth according to their secondary metabolic outputs. Consequently, many phenylalanine-derived secondary metabolites have influence over hormone activity. For instance, multiple phenylpropanoid intermediates and catecholamines alter the sensitivity of plants to the central hormone auxin, which in concert with cytokinin directs most aspects of plant growth and development. This dissertation reviews previous research on the influence of phenylpropanoid intermediates and catecholamines on plants, with a …

Understanding The Cellular And Physiological Mechanisms Of Fertilization And Early-Stage Seed Development, Mohammad Foteh Ali Jan 2022

Understanding The Cellular And Physiological Mechanisms Of Fertilization And Early-Stage Seed Development, Mohammad Foteh Ali

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Flowering plants have evolved a unique double-fertilization process. Two sperm cells fuse with two female gametophytic cells, the egg and central cells within the ovule, giving rise to the embryo and endosperm, respectively. Sperm cells in flowering plants are nonmotile and delivered in close proximity to the egg and central cells by the pollen tube. Flowering plants have established filamentous actin (F-actin) based sperm nuclear migration system for successful fertilization. Prior to fertilization, the female gamete forms a mesh-like structure of F-actin that shows constant inward movement from the plasma membrane periphery to the center of the cell where the …

A Bull In A China Shop: How Cfius Made Tiktok A National Security Problem, Adina Feder Jan 2022

A Bull In A China Shop: How Cfius Made Tiktok A National Security Problem, Adina Feder

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note critiques the expansion of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States' (CFIUS) mandate under the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act of 2018 (FIRRMA), particularly its inclusion of "sensitive personal data" as a factor in national security reviews. This expansion has led to overly broad and vague definitions, resulting in unnecessary restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) without adequately addressing legitimate national security concerns. The note argues that data privacy issues should be addressed through separate federal privacy legislation rather than CFIUS, which is ill-suited to handle such matters. It calls for clearer definitions and a …

Autumn Is Coming: A Novel Liability Theory That May Kill Pharmaceutical Evergreening, Uri Y. Hacohen Jan 2022

Autumn Is Coming: A Novel Liability Theory That May Kill Pharmaceutical Evergreening, Uri Y. Hacohen

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Pharmaceutical evergreening-attempts by brand-name manufacturers to leverage patent rights to artificially extend legal protection for drugs-is among the most pressing and unresolved public policy challenges of our time. On July 14, 2021, in Sanofi et al. vs. Unipharm Ltd., the Israeli Supreme Court adopted a novel and internationally unprecedented legal policy to combat the evergreening pandemic. By using its equitable powers, the Israeli court empowered a generic manufacturer, Unipharm, to claim on behalf of the public interest the wrongly obtained monopoly profits that a brand-name manufacturer, Sanofi, obtained by improperly leveraging its improvement patent to impair generic market entry. This …

Genetic Variation Within Nicotine Addiction Pathways In Relation To Smoking Cessation And Smoking Relapse Throughout Adulthood: A Longitudinal Study Of Female Registered Nurses, Stephanie K. Jones

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of premature death and preventable illness; more than 480,000 deaths annually in the U.S. are attributable to smoking. Of the more than 34 million U.S. adult smokers, more than half make a quit attempt each year but more than 90% will relapse within 6 months. Twin studies show that smoking cessation is more than 50% heritable, thus genetics plays a significant role in cessation. However, the understanding of genetic susceptibility to cessation failure is still in its nascent stages. Genetic studies of smoking cessation have typically used short-term follow-up or cross-sectional design, study design …

Invasion Of Plant Communities, Stephen L. Young, Sarah Kimball, Stephen J. Novak Jan 2022

Invasion Of Plant Communities, Stephen L. Young, Sarah Kimball, Stephen J. Novak

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Due to numerous human activities, organisms have been transported and either accidentally or deliberately introduced all around the globe. Biological invasions are now considered to be one of the main drivers of global change because many invasive plants have severe ecological, economic, and health consequences. Thus, there is an ever-growing need to better understand invasions to determine how specific plant species are able to establish in communities and, in many cases, expand their range. Here, we describe the invasion process and how it contributes to the invasion of plant communities. We present an invasion-factor framework (IFF) model that uses three …

Predicting Spatial-Temporal Patterns Of Diet Quality And Large Herbivore Performance Using Satellite Time Series, Sean P. Kearney, Lauren M. Porensky, David J. Augustine, Justin D. Derner, Feng Gao Jan 2022

Predicting Spatial-Temporal Patterns Of Diet Quality And Large Herbivore Performance Using Satellite Time Series, Sean P. Kearney, Lauren M. Porensky, David J. Augustine, Justin D. Derner, Feng Gao

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Adaptive management of large herbivores requires an understanding of how spatial-temporal fluctuations in forage biomass and quality influence animal performance. Advances in remote sensing have yielded information about the spatial-temporal dynamics of forage biomass, which in turn have informed rangeland management decisions such as stocking rate and paddock selection for free-ranging cattle. However, less is known about the spatial-temporal patterns of diet quality and their influence on large herbivore performance. This is due to infrequent concurrent ground observations of forage conditions with performance (e.g., mass gain), and previously limited satellite data at fine spatial and temporal scales. We combined multi-temporal …

Predicting Biochemical Acclimation Of Leaf Photosynthesis In Soybean Under In-Field Canopy Warming Using Hyperspectral Reflectance, Etsushi Kumagai, Charles H. Burroughs, Taylor L. Pederson, Christopher M. Montes, Bin Peng, Hyungsuk Kimm, Kaiyu Guan, Elizabeth A. Ainsworth, Carl J. Bernacchi

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Traditional gas exchange measurements are cumbersome, which makes it difficult to capture variation in biochemical parameters, namely the maximum rate of carboxylation measured at a reference temperature (Vcmax25) and the maximum electron transport at a reference temperature (Jmax25), in response to growth temperature over time from days to weeks. Hyperspectral reflectance provides reliable measures of Vcmax25 and Jmax25; however, the capability of this method to capture biochemical acclimations of the two parameters to high growth temperature over time has not been demonstrated. In this study, Vcmax25 and Jmax25 were measured over multiple growth stages during two growing seasons for field-grown …

Self-Sexualization In Relation To Sexual Harassment And Body Shame, Dooyoung Choi, Ju-Young M. Kang, Jieun Kim, Ha Kyung Lee Jan 2022

Self-Sexualization In Relation To Sexual Harassment And Body Shame, Dooyoung Choi, Ju-Young M. Kang, Jieun Kim, Ha Kyung Lee

STEMPS Faculty Publications

While many researchers examined several harmful consequences of the imposed or forced sexualization of women, still little is known about voluntary self-sexualization and its potential effects on women who engage in the practice. Although the idea that self-sexualization is self-fulfilling remains contentious, women who self-sexualize are naturally expected to receive sexualized attention, including unwanted attention. This study starts with the question of whether self-sexualizing women, including those who use self-sexualization as a source of power, experience sexual objectification, measured by nonphysical sexual harassment, and its negative consequence, measured by body shame. Furthermore, we investigate how age moderates the relationship. An …

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is characterized by metabolic deregulations that often manifest as deviations in metabolite levels and aberrations in their corresponding metabolic genes across the clinical specimens and preclinical PC models. Cholesterol is one of the critical metabolites supporting PC, synthesized or acquired by PC cells. Nevertheless, the significance of the de novo cholesterol synthesis pathway has been controversial in PC, indicating the need to reassess this pathway in PC. We utilized preclinical models and clinical specimens of PC patients and cell lines and utilized mass spectrometry-based sterol analysis. Further, we also performed in silico analysis to corroborate the significance …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Ras family proteins are membrane-bound GTPases that control proliferation, survival, and motility. Many forms of cancers are driven by the acquisition of somatic mutations in a RAS gene. In pancreatic cancer (PC), more than 90% of tumors carry an activating mutation in KRAS. Mutations in components of the Ras signaling pathway can also be the cause of RASopathies, a group of developmental disorders. In a subset of RASopathies, the causal mutations are in the LZTR1 protein, a substrate adaptor for E3 ubiquitin ligases that promote the degradation of Ras proteins. Here, we show that the function of LZTR1 is regulated …

Cancer divergence has many facets other than being considered a genetic term. It is a tremendous challenge to understand the metastasis and therapy response in cancer biology; however, it postulates the opportunity to explore the possible mechanism in the surrounding tumor environment. Most deadly solid malignancies are distinctly characterized by their tumor microenvironment (TME). TME consists of stromal components such as immune, inflammatory, endothelial, adipocytes, and fibroblast cells. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) or cancer stem-like cells are a small sub-set of the population within cancer cells believed to be a responsible player in the self-renewal, metastasis, and therapy response of …

The Effects Of Road Salt (Nacl), Predation, And Competition On The Growth And Community Interactions Of Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma Maculatum) And Wood Frogs (Lithobates Sylvaticus), Melissa Ocampo, Catherine A. Chuirazzi, Mizuki Takahashi

Faculty Journal Articles

Road deicing salts are frequently used in northern regions of the world during the winter and early spring months. As a result, a significant portion of road runoff into surrounding aquatic habitats contains road deicing salts. Previous studies found road salt contaminations in vernal pools that pond-breeding amphibians commonly use, including spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) and wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus). Studies have examined the impact of road salt on both amphibian species, but to our knowledge no previous studies have examined how road salt impacts the interspecific competition between both amphibians. We hypothesized that road salt would negatively impact growth …

The Question Is Not “Can Humans Talk?” Or “Can They Suffer?” But “Can They Reason?”, Clive Phillips

Animal Sentience

In their target article, Rowan et al (2022) make a welcome attempt to chart the development of Western progress over the past two hundred years toward formally recognizing that animals feel. They outline the heroic efforts of Compassion in World Farming to gain for animals the status of sentient beings rather than merely human property. A broader view exists, from human prehistory to the present day, in which animals have been (and still are) understood to be sentient by indigenous peoples as well as by some Eastern religions. Growing recognition in the West that animals feel represents a new age …

Not Of Woman Born? Extra-Uterine Destining And The Individual, Social, And Spiritual Implications Of Ectogenesis, Laura Johnson Dahlke

Ph.D. Dissertations (Open Access)

The development of ectogenesis or artificial womb technology is currently ongoing and likely to be in use in the near future. This qualitative study analyzes the potential individual, social and spiritual implications of ectogenesis. It argues that while there may be therapeutic benefits to the artificial womb, it will ultimately result in dehumanization and alienation from the body. While much of the current conversation about this technology addresses the health implications to the fetus and neonate, this dissertation investigates the possible impact of artificial wombs on women. It employs Martin Heidegger’s philosophy of technology as a model to assist in …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Composite films of bacterial cellulose-silver nanoparticles (BC-Ag) were prepared by different methods of in-situ reduction of silver, using sodium hydroxide, ascorbic acid, chitosan, and UV irradiation. The effects of the reduction methods on their properties were investigated. The chitosan-reduced composite exhibited dispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within the nanocellulose matrix with the smallest size, while the ascorbic-reduced composite displayed the largest size. The incorporation of AgNPs tended to reduce the crystallinity of the composites, except for the ascorbic-reduced composite which exhibited an increase in crystallinity. Mechanical testing revealed that the ascorbic-reduced composite had the highest Young's modulus of 8960 MPa, whereas …
