Introduction To Sociology: Interaction And Social Structure, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.
Introduction To Sociology: Interaction And Social Structure, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources
Abstract
This paper explores the intricate interplay between micro- and macro-sociological perspectives on social interaction, identity, and structure. Through an examination of theoretical approaches such as symbolic interactionism, dramaturgy, and social exchange, it highlights how individuals construct and perform identities within complex webs of social expectations—particularly shaped by factors like race, status, and role dynamics. The discussion extends to the function of social networks in influencing opportunities, notably in the context of employment, underscoring the nuanced role of weak ties. The analysis further delves into the significance of social status, distinguishing between ascribed, achieved, master, and salient statuses, and examines …
Effects Of Self-Monitoring On Teachers’ Behavior-Specific Praise And Students’ Behavior In A Center-Based Classroom, Samantha Walsh
Effects Of Self-Monitoring On Teachers’ Behavior-Specific Praise And Students’ Behavior In A Center-Based Classroom, Samantha Walsh
Theses
The current study explores the effects of self-monitoring on teachers' use of behavior-specific praise (BSP) and its impact on student behavior in a center-based classroom. Self-monitoring, a cost-effective and time-efficient intervention, has been proven effective in previous research for enhancing educator performance. However, previous studies have often combined self-monitoring with other interventions, leaving a gap in understanding its effects in isolation. This study aims to replicate the work of Justus et al. (2023) by examining the impact of self-monitoring on paraprofessionals in a center-based classroom with students aged 6-10. Using a multiple baseline design across participants, three paraprofessionals were trained …

Introduction To Sociology: Sex And Gender, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources
Abstract
This paper explores the complex interplay between sex and gender, focusing on how societal structures, historical contexts, and cultural norms shape gender roles and expectations. Drawing on the works of influential theorists such as Margaret Mead and researchers like Maccoby and Jacklin, the discussion distinguishes between biological sex differences and socially constructed gender distinctions. The analysis highlights the pervasive influence of gender socialization through agents such as family, peers, educational institutions, and media, which collectively reinforce stereotypes and stratify opportunities for individuals. The evolution of gender stratification is traced from the post-World War II era to the present, documenting …

Journal of ICSAR
This study examines the influence of organizational culture and work environment on the work motivation of Special Needs School (SLB) teachers in Pekalongan Regency. Using a quantitative descriptive-correlational approach, data were collected from 103 SLB teachers through a Likert-scale questionnaire. The results show that both organizational culture and work environment have significant and positive effects on teacher motivation, both partially and simultaneously. Organizational culture contributes 46% and work environment 56% to the variation in work motivation, while together they account for 58%. The highest contributions come from intrinsic motivation and the non-physical work environment. These findings emphasize the importance of …
Robust Embeddings Of Genetics, Anatomy, And State Decoded From A Neuron’S Activity, Aidan Schneider
Robust Embeddings Of Genetics, Anatomy, And State Decoded From A Neuron’S Activity, Aidan Schneider
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Neural spike trains are shaped by both extrinsic inputs and intrinsic structural constraints. While prior work has focused on how spike timing encodes externally driven variables, such as stimuli or behavior, this dissertation explores whether principles that organize neural activity in space and time—such as genetic cell type, anatomical location, and arousal state—are also embedded in the spiking output of individual neurons. I hypothesize that these organizing principles are not quenched as irrelevant variability, but rather multiplexed within the neural code itself. To test this, I attempt to decode these principles from the spike trains of neurons recorded in behaving …

The integrity of cellular membranes (lipid bilayers) and myelin sheaths covering axons is a crucial feature controlling normal brain structural and functional networks. Yet, in vivo evaluation of this integrity at the nanoscale level of the cellular membranes organization is challenging. Herein we explore the dual property of biological water in Central Nervous System (CNS), as one of the major stabilizing factors of cellular membranes, and the major source of MRI signal. We introduce the Basic Transient Hydrogen Bond (THB) model of the MR signal relaxation due to the quantum spin/magnetization exchanges within the THB Matrix encompassing water molecules and …

Splicing is a complex process that is required to create the transcriptomic diversity needed for specialized functions in higher eukaryotes. The spliceosome contains more than 100 proteins and RNA molecules, which coordinate this dynamic process. Despite the ubiquity of splicing, pathogenic variants in spliceosomal components often cause a tissue-specific phenotype, hinting at further complexities that are not yet fully understood. We have identified a cohort of ten families with de novo missense variants in a spliceosomal component, CRNKL1, where nine individuals harbor one of two missense variants that both affect the same amino acid, Arg267. All affected individuals share a …

BACKGROUND: Cancer cells uptake excessive nutrients by expressing higher levels of glucose and/or amino acid transporters to meet their increased energy demands. L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), is regarded as a cancer-specific transporter for the uptake of large neutral amino acids such as L-tryptophan. However, the mechanism by which LAT1 rewires cellular metabolism to promote cancer progression and chemoresistance have not yet been investigated.
METHODS: The protein levels of LAT1, p-PKM2, and p-LDHA were determined in breast cancer tissue arrays by immunohistochemistry staining followed by survival analysis. The orthotopic breast cancer models in mice, syngeneic breast cancer models, and …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novobiocin Analogues As Potential Inhibitors Of Polymerase Theta Polθ In Dna Damage And Repair, Mohammed Essam Albuhluli
Theses and Dissertations
Killing tumors while leaving normal cells unharmed is the goal of precision cancer therapy, a challenging feat that is enabled by targeting tumor-specific vulnerabilities [1]. Targeting Polθ potentiates PARP inhibitors (PARPi) in specifically killing homology-directed repair (HDR)-deficient tumor cells and re-sensitize PARPi resistant tumor cells [1]. The induced essentiality between Polθ and HDR-deficiency underscores the value of Polθ as a therapeutic target in the context of tumors with HDR genetic mutations [1]. The helicase-like domain (HLD) is a super family 2 (SF2)-type domain with DNA-dependent ATPase activity [1]. We previously discovered that the antibiotic NVB acts as an inhibitor of …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) is a therapeutic technique that involves immersing an individual in an environment with minimal sensory input or stimulation. The goal of REST is to induce a state of relaxation that is deeper than what can be achieved through other forms of relaxation techniques. Research suggests that REST can help reduce anxiety, alleviate chronic pain, improve sleep, and enhance creativity and cognitive function. Flotation-REST is a popular type of REST that utilizes an enclosed tank filled with buoyant saltwater to facilitate relaxation. This study aimed to synthesize the evidence on studies that investigate the effects …

Strategies For Reducing Employee Turnover In Long-Term Care, Eleanor Denise Gaines
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High employee turnover in long-term care (LTC) facilities contributes to diminished care quality, low staff morale, and increased operational costs. LTC organizational leaders must address high turnover because it disrupts continuity of care, undermines team cohesion, and increases the burden of recruiting and training new staff. This qualitative multiple case study explored strategies used by human resource managers (HRMs) to improve staff retention and morale in LTC settings, motivated by the need to prevent workforce deterioration, enhance competitive advantage, and increase organizational profitability. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of the study was to identify evidence-based practices that effectively …

Parkinson's disease (PD) is considered the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide; treating this disease remains quite challenging. Environmental and genetic factors may play a role in the pathophysiology of PD. α-synuclein aggregation, oxidative stress, ferroptosis, mitochondrial failure, neuroinflammation, and gut dysbiosis are among the known risk factors of PD. The pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease is complicated by the interconnections between these molecular pathways, which also present significant obstacles to treatment development. However, due to its complex mechanism and long latency, PD is difficult to diagnose and detect, which presents a barrier to treatment. In addition, the need to develop …

RAS genes are frequently mutated in cancer, often at codons 12 and 61. With the recent introduction of RAS inhibitors, we can now directly investigate the effects of specific RAS mutations in cancer cells. In this study, we demonstrate that in tumors with RASG12X mutations, mutant RAS can be activated by receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK), and PI3K activation is dependent on mutant RAS. Conversely, RASQ61X mutations activate the MAPK cascade independently of RTKs, and inhibition of RASQ61X impairs MAPK pathway activation but leaves the PI3K pathway unaffected. Our characterization of these distinct features of G12X and Q61X mutations suggests that …
