Estimating The Quasi-Underground: Oregon’S Informal Marijuana Economy, Seth S. Crawford Nov 2022

Estimating The Quasi-Underground: Oregon’S Informal Marijuana Economy, Seth S. Crawford

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This study estimates the size of Oregon’s informal marijuana economy, drawing upon Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) procedures and survey methods to investigate this quasi-underground activity. The results suggest that average marijuana users consume approximately 4.5 ounces per year and pay approximately $177 per ounce. Most users purchase the drug from friends and nearly one third of respondents indicate that they sell marijuana in small quantities. Growers tend to sell inauspicious quantities to friends and relatives, and rarely earn more than $10,000 annually from their sales. The composition of distribution networks suggests that the informal marijuana economy is a “robust network,” particularly …

Who Will Own The Mazama? Tribal Power And Forest Ownership In The Klamath Basin, Erin Kelly, Hannah Gosnell Nov 2022

Who Will Own The Mazama? Tribal Power And Forest Ownership In The Klamath Basin, Erin Kelly, Hannah Gosnell

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Through the case study of a 90,000-acre section of forest called the Mazama Tree Farm (Mazama), this manuscript explores several dynamics within the State of Jefferson, notably (1) the changing power of Native American tribes relative to other landowners and (2) the transition in rural land uses from productivism toward post-productivism. The Mazama was part of the Klamath Reservation until tribal termination in 1954, when it was purchased by an industrial landowner. The loss of the reservation coincided with the nadir of tribal power within the State of Jefferson, but more recent developments may return the Mazama to tribal ownership …

The Politics Of Fire And The Social Impacts Of Fire Exclusion On The Klamath1, Kari Marie Norgaard Nov 2022

The Politics Of Fire And The Social Impacts Of Fire Exclusion On The Klamath1, Kari Marie Norgaard

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

The exceptional biological diversity of the mid-Klamath River region of northern California has emerged in conjunction with sophisticated Karuk land management practices, including the regulation of the forest and fisheries through ceremony and the use of fire. Over three quarters of Karuk traditional food and cultural use species are enhanced by fire. Fire is also central to cultural and spiritual practices. Land management techniques since the early 1900s have emphasized fire suppression and the “exclusion” of wildfire from the landscape. This paper uses data from interviews, surveys and other documents to describe the social impacts of fire exclusion for Karuk …

Occasional Paper Series

In this essay, we share our experiences of leading a middle school data science workshop on the topic of environmental racism (ER), in particular, the disproportionate burden of pollution on communities of Color. During the workshop, youth explored case studies of local and global data-based environmental advocacy, analyzed datasets that we provided, conducted journalistic research, and created maps and other data visualizations. Our goal was to provide opportunities for youth to recognize the strengths and limitations of data, identify environmental inequities, and advocate for social change.

We’Re Not Migrating Yet: Engaging Children’S Geographies And Learning With Lands And Waters, Anna Lees, Megan Bang Nov 2022

We’Re Not Migrating Yet: Engaging Children’S Geographies And Learning With Lands And Waters, Anna Lees, Megan Bang

Occasional Paper Series

Considering the places, the geographies, of children’s learning, of human learning, is fundamental to seriously considering not only the “whats” or the content of learning but perhaps more importantly the “whys” and the “hows” of learning and the overall goals of education. The whys and hows of education construct what is deemed relevant and irrelevant as well as what is rendered invisible to the “here and now” to children’s lives (Apple, 2004; Iorio & Parnell, 2015; Nxumalo et al., 2011; Tesar, 2015). We argue in our work that issues of place, and relevancy to the “here and now”, is always …

Small-Molecule Protac Mediates Targeted Protein Degradation To Treat Stat3-Dependent Epithelial Cancer, Jinmei Jin, Yaping Wu, Zeng Zhao, Ye Wu Nov 2022

Small-Molecule Protac Mediates Targeted Protein Degradation To Treat Stat3-Dependent Epithelial Cancer, Jinmei Jin, Yaping Wu, Zeng Zhao, Ye Wu

Faculty and Student Publications

The aberrant activation of STAT3 is associated with the etiology and progression in a variety of malignant epithelial-derived tumors, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). Due to the lack of an enzymatic catalytic site or a ligand-binding pocket, there are no small-molecule inhibitors directly targeting STAT3 that have been approved for clinical translation. Emerging proteolysis targeting chimeric (PROTAC) technology-based approach represents a potential strategy to overcome the limitations of conventional inhibitors and inhibit activation of STAT3 and downstream genes. In this study, the heterobifunctional small-molecule-based PROTACs are successfully prepared from toosendanin (TSN), with 1 …

Towards A Healing Curriculum: Addressing Cultural Inclusion For The Indigenous Sadri Community In Bangladesh, Jurana Aziz Nov 2022

Towards A Healing Curriculum: Addressing Cultural Inclusion For The Indigenous Sadri Community In Bangladesh, Jurana Aziz

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Bangladesh is a Southeast Asian country where the indigenous people of the northern and southeastern region speak a variety of native languages. But none of their languages is included in the main curriculum for teaching or learning. As a result, these people are often not motivated to send their children to school. The language policy of the country does not include these indigenous languages in the core curriculum. Though the government of Bangladesh has started an initial plan to introduce education in mother tongues of five major indigenous languages in the country, they are not yet implemented. A large number …

Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment For State Wildlife Areas Surrounding Humboldt Bay, Northern California, Robert M. Sullivan, Aldaron Laird, Brian Powell, Jeffrey K. Anderson Nov 2022

Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment For State Wildlife Areas Surrounding Humboldt Bay, Northern California, Robert M. Sullivan, Aldaron Laird, Brian Powell, Jeffrey K. Anderson

Local Reports and Publications

Humboldt Bay has the highest rate of sea level rise (SLR) in California (47.2 cm/century). Due to compaction and tectonic subsidence, former tidelands and pastures behind dikes surrounding Humboldt Bay are lower in elevation than bay waters at high tide. Adaptation to future climate change and SLR requires that resource managers understand vulnerability and risk to each wildlife area at a local level, because adaptation to SLR is a risk-based management strategy against an uncertain future requiring site-specific solutions. We conducted a vulnerability assessment of the shoreline of three State wildlife areas surrounding Humboldt Bay: Elk River (ERWA), Fay Slough …

Are Numerical Symbols Fundamental To Neural Computation?, Mirinda James Nov 2022

Are Numerical Symbols Fundamental To Neural Computation?, Mirinda James

Theses

Abstract: Neuroclassicism is the view that cognition is computation and that core mental processes, such as perception, memory, and reasoning are products of digital computations realized in neural tissue. Cognitive psychologist C. R. Gallistel uses this classical framework to argue that all cognitive information processing is based on symbolic operations performed over quantitative values (i.e. numbers) stored in the brain, much like a digital computer. Assuming this hypothesis, he investigates how the brain stores quantitative information (i.e. the numerical symbols involved in neural computation). He claims that it is more plausible that memories for numbers are stored within molecular mechanisms …

Reviving Knowledges Through Play And Resistance: The Case Of Navajo Conceptions Of Space, Daniel Ness, Richard D. Sawyer Nov 2022

Reviving Knowledges Through Play And Resistance: The Case Of Navajo Conceptions Of Space, Daniel Ness, Richard D. Sawyer

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The authors explore a possible cause of epistemicidal predispositions of the dominant Eurocentric curricula. They posit that one way to determine a plausible contributing factor of this increasing devastation is to consider epistemicide through the lens of intellectual development. To do this, the authors examine parallel patterns of behavior in the domains of developmental and cognitive psychology. The authors then discuss an alternative framework to the Western conception of space within formal K-12 education by presenting the Navajo conception of space and play. Throughout the paper, the authors argue that all students—and especially those living in poverty in commercially constructed, …

Commentary: Facial Aesthetic Dermatological Procedures And Photoprotection In Chinese Populations, Wei Liu, Jean Krutmann, Yan Tian, Corinne Granger, Jaime Piquero-Casals, Carles Trullàs, Thierry Passeron, Henry W. Lim, Wei Lai

Dermatology Articles

The medical literature on aesthetic dermatology has primarily focused on a light-skinned patient population, yet patients of darker skin types have different needs and priorities. In Chinese individuals, key concerns include altered pigmentation, which is perceived to age the individual, and also relates to the Chinese cultural standard of beauty of fair skin; many seek aesthetic treatment for this. Non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as lasers and injections are also gaining in popularity in the Chinese market, but this population is prone to hyperpigmentation as an adverse effect of such procedures. Considered and tailored approaches, both to primary concerns of photoaging …

Faculty Research 2022

MYC is dysregulated in >50% of cancers, but direct targeting of MYC has been clinically unsuccessful. Targeting downstream MYC effector pathways represents an attractive alternative. MYC regulates alternative mRNA splicing, but the mechanistic links between MYC and the splicing machinery in cancer remain underexplored. Here, we identify a network of co-expressed splicing factors (SF-modules) in MYC-active breast tumors. Of these, one is a pan-cancer SF-module correlating with MYC activity across 33 tumor types. In mammary cell models, MYC activation leads to co-upregulation of pan-cancer module SFs and to changes in >4,000 splicing events. In breast cancer organoids, co-overexpression of the …

Behavioral responses of freshwater planarians have been studied for over a century. In recent decades, behavior has been used as a readout to study planarian development and regeneration, wound healing, molecular evolution, neurotoxicology, and learning and memory. The planarian nervous system is among the simplest of the bilaterally symmetric animals, with an anterior brain attached to two ventral nerve cords interconnected by multiple commissures. We found that, in response to mechanical and near-UV stimulation, head stimulation produces turning, tail stimulation produces contraction, and trunk stimulation produces midbody elongation in the planarian Dugesia japonica. When cut into two or three pieces, …

A Torsion-Based Rheometer For Measuring Viscoelastic Material Properties, Merrill E. Asp, Elise Jutzeler, Jakub Kochanowski, Katherine Kerr, Dawei Song, Sarthak Gupta, Robert Carroll, Alison E. Patteson

Physics - All Scholarship

Rheology and the study of viscoelastic materials are an integral

part of engineering and the study of biophysical systems. Tissue rheology is even

used in the study of cancer and other diseases. However, the cost of a rheometer is

feasible only for colleges, universities, and research laboratories. Even if a rheometer

can be purchased, it is bulky and delicately calibrated, limiting its usefulness to the

laboratory itself. The design presented here is less than a tenth of the cost of a

professional rheometer. The design is also portable, making it the ideal solution to

introduce viscoelasticity to high school students …

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Single-molecule localization microscopy super-resolution methods rely on stochastic blinking/binding events, which often occur multiple times from each emitter over the course of data acquisition. Typically, the blinking/binding events from each emitter are treated as independent events, without an attempt to assign them to a particular emitter. Here, we describe a Bayesian method of inferring the positions of the tagged molecules by exploring the possible grouping and combination of localizations from multiple blinking/binding events. The results are position estimates of the tagged molecules that have improved localization precision and facilitate nanoscale structural insights. The Bayesian framework uses the localization precisions to …

Alterations To Sphingomyelin Metabolism Affect Hemostasis And Thrombosis, Jue Wang, Shiva Keshava, Kaushik Das, Richard Kolesnick, Xian-Cheng Jiang, Usha R. Pendurthi, L. Vijaya Mohan Rao

Cellular and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

BACKGROUND: Our recent studies suggest that sphingomyelin levels in the plasma membrane influence TF (tissue factor) procoagulant activity. The current study was performed to investigate how alterations to sphingomyelin metabolic pathway would affect TF procoagulant activity and thereby affect hemostatic and thrombotic processes. METHODS: Macrophages and endothelial cells were transfected with specific siRNAs or infected with adenoviral vectors to alter sphingomyelin levels in the membrane. TF activity was measured in factor X activation assay. Saphenous vein incision-induced bleeding and the inferior vena cava ligation-induced flow restriction mouse models were used to evaluate hemostasis and thrombosis, respectively. RESULTS: Overexpression of SMS …

Investigating The Effects Of Ionic Liquids On Dna Gquadruplex And Protein Structure Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Nicholas J. Paradis

Theses and Dissertations

Nucleic acids and proteins have huge implications in biomedicine and bioengineering, however their storage instability limits their applicability and current storage protocols are expensive and globally-inaccessible. Finding an alternative biocompatible media to store nucleic acids and proteins would reduce costs and increase their applicability. Ionic liquids (ILs) are molten salt compounds that have been shown to modulate the stability and activity of nucleic acids and proteins. In this thesis, molecular modeling studies of DNA/RNA and protein structure in ILs will be discussed (Chapter 1) and this method will be used to study the IL effects on the structure on the …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Introduction: The symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) include muscle weakness and eventual paralysis. These symptoms result from denervation of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and motor neuron cell death in the brain and spinal cord. Due to the "dying back" pattern of motor neuron degeneration, protecting NMJs should be a therapeutic priority. Although exercise has the potential to protect against NMJ denervation, its use in ALS has been controversial. Most preclinical studies have focused on aerobic exercise, which report that exercise can be beneficial at moderate intensities. The effects of resistance exercise on NMJ preservation in limb muscles have not …

BACKGROUND: Despite the recent progress in the treatment and outcome of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), immunotherapy has still significant limitations reporting a significant proportion of patients not benefiting from therapy, even in patients with high PD-L1 expression. We have previously demonstrated that the combined inhibition of MEK and PD-L1 in NSCLC patients derived three dimensional cultures exerted significant synergistic effect in terms of immune-dependent cancer cell death. However, subsequent experiments analyzing the expression of Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-1 (Ido-1) gene expression demonstrated that Ido-1 resulted unaffected by the MEK inhibition and even increased after the combined inhibition of MEK and …
