Investigation Of Pitching And Plunging Motions On A Tandem Wing Configuration, Riley M. Capiro
Honors Undergraduate Theses
From the beginning of the history of flight, inspiration has been drawn from nature. Evolution has spent millions of years optimizing creatures that rely on flight as their means of locomotion. Today, aerial vehicles are very different to those from the time of the Wright brothers. One kind of vehicle that stands to benefit in mimicking nature is the drone, particularly smaller drones. Commonly used today by militaries, industry and civilians, drones are increasingly affordable while also decreasing in size thanks to advancements in electronics and manufacturing methods. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how pitching and rolling …

Maintaining a physically active lifestyle has shown to decrease the risks of falling by slowing down the degenerative changes that occur with aging adults. But despite these physical changes, research has recognized the development of the fear of falling (FOF) as also attributing to the aging adults’ risk of falling. Furthermore, increases the risk of falling and subsequently increases the loss of independency. This study aimed to: 1) examine the relationships between the levels of physical activity, degree of FOF, and fall risk using quantitative approach; and 2) explore the changes of FOF and understand its cause using qualitative approach. …
Genetic Algorighm Representation Selection Impact On Binary Classification Problems, Stephen V. Maldonado
Genetic Algorighm Representation Selection Impact On Binary Classification Problems, Stephen V. Maldonado
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In this thesis, we explore the impact of problem representation on the ability for the genetic algorithms (GA) to evolve a binary prediction model to predict whether a physical therapist is paid above or below the median amount from Medicare. We explore three different problem representations, the vector GA (VGA), the binary GA (BGA), and the proportional GA (PGA). We find that all three representations can produce models with high accuracy and low loss that are better than Scikit-Learn’s logistic regression model and that all three representations select the same features; however, the PGA representation tends to create lower weights …

Doctoral Dissertations
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a clonal hematopoietic malignancy with highly heterogeneous molecular and clinical profiles. It is one of the deadliest blood cancers, resulting in approximately 10,000 deaths each year. Impaired hematopoiesis is one of AML’s hallmarks. This entails defective erythropoiesis and proliferation of undifferentiated myeloblasts. AML is also characterized by chemoresistance and high relapse rates. Despite significant advances in treatments, there is no cure for AML. Therefore, there is an emerging and unmet need to shift away from traditional chemotherapeutics and focus on targeted therapies with curative potential. Growth/differentiation factor 1 (GDF1) is a member of the TGFβ …

The Fate Of Organic Nitrogen In Agroecosystems: Drivers And Outcomes, Lauren C. Breza
Doctoral Dissertations
Enhancing soil nitrogen (N) stocks is critical for managing soil health in agroecosystems. Growers apply external N as synthetic fertilizer to increase the amount of available N to crops. However, it is well known that synthetic fertilizer usage in agroecosystems leads to widespread pollution and contributes significantly to climate change. Nevertheless, growers and researchers recognize this N problem as a global problem and are developing solutions via alternative farming methods. Some of these alternative strategies include cover cropping, diversifying crop rotations, organic farming (i.e., no inputs), or combining these methods. Understanding how the different facets of agricultural management influence the …
Single Chain Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (Raft) Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) For Chemical Sensing, Tianyu Ren
Doctoral Dissertations
An approach to single chain poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide (polyNIPAM) with a redox tag was polymerized by the reversible addition fragmentation-chain transfer (RAFT) method. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) technology is the design of an artificial receptor with high selectivity for a specific analyte. The synthesized RAFT polymers were devised to develop conformation-based electrochemical MIP sensors. The material polyNIPAM is attractive as a receptor of a chemical sensor. Due to its thermosensitive properties, polyNIPAM collapses above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and returns to its original state when the temperature is reduced below LCST. This reversible aggregation behavior shows that polyNIPAM has a …

Recent discoveries of the purpose and potential of microbial interactions with humans have broad implications for our understanding of metabolism, immunity, the host–microbe genetic interactions. Bioavailability and bioaccessibility of phytonutrients in foods not only enrich microbial diversity in the lower human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) but also direct the functioning of the metagenome of the microbiota. Thus, healthy choices must include foods that contain nutrients that satisfy both the needs of humans and their microbes. Physical activity interventions at a moderate level of intensity have shown positive effects on metabolism and the microbiome, while intense training (>70% VO2max) …

Doctoral Dissertations
Class Hydrozoa belongs to Phylum Cnidaria which occupies a key phylogenetic position in animal evolution. Phylum Cnidaria, which includes animals such as jellyfish, sea anemones, corals, and hydrozoans, is the evolutionary sister lineage to bilaterians. My Ph.D. research is focused on understanding how hydrozoans integrate sensory information from the environment at the genetic level and how that mediates an organismal behavioral response by investigating three closely related hydrozoan species: Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, Hydra vulgaris, and Ectopleura crocea. Many of the studies on cnidarian sensory ecology have focused on adult stages or anthozoan species (sea anemones and corals) leaving a lack of …
Neighborhood Disorder And Adolescent Psychological Distress: Effects Of Gender, Race/Ethnicity, Social Support, And Self Concept, Jean Bessette
Neighborhood Disorder And Adolescent Psychological Distress: Effects Of Gender, Race/Ethnicity, Social Support, And Self Concept, Jean Bessette
Doctoral Dissertations
Sociological research on mental health is often guided by the stress process framework. A key tenet of this paradigm is the proposition that both exposure and vulnerability to social stressors arise from one’s placement in the social structure; those with lower social status face greater exposure and/or greater vulnerability to stressors that detrimentally impact their psychological wellbeing. A consequential social stressor is the neighborhood context in which one resides. Past research has suggested a disadvantageous effect of greater neighborhood physical and social disorder on youth mental health. This research employs the stress process framework to examine how the effects of …

The Sequence Dependent Nanoscale Structure Of Cenp-A Nucleosomes, Tommy Stormberg, Yuri L. Lyubchenko
Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences
CENP-A is a histone variant found in high abundance at the centromere in humans. At the centromere, this histone variant replaces the histone H3 found throughout the bulk chromatin. Additionally, the centromere comprises tandem repeats of α-satellite DNA, which CENP-A nucleosomes assemble upon. However, the effect of the DNA sequence on the nucleosome assembly and centromere formation remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the structure of nucleosomes assembled with the CENP-A variant using Atomic Force Microscopy. We assembled both CENP-A nucleosomes and H3 nucleosomes on a DNA substrate containing an α-satellite motif and characterized their positioning and wrapping efficiency. We …
