Taxonomy And Phylogeny Of A New Species Of Pseudocercospora On Solanum Nigrum From India, Archana Singh, Sanjay Yadav, Raghvendra Singh, Nawal Dubey
Turkish Journal of Botany
A new species Pseudocercospora solanicola is discovered causing severe leaf spot disease on Solanum nigrum from Sonebhadra. Species is described and illustrated based on morphology, molecular sequence analysis and phylogeny of the large subunit (LSU) and internal transcribed spacer region of the nuclear ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Morphologically, new species has similarity with allied species in Pseudocercospora but differs in having black circular, velvety leaf spot and size of stromata, conidia and conidiophores. A key to Pseudocercospora species on Solanum has been provided.

Demographic Profiles Of Clinical Research Participants In Fda-Approved Nmes, Abayomi Oladoye Ojetayo
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Drug development is a rigorous and expensive process that takes between 10 and15 years. Recruitment and retention of human subjects in clinical trials is challenging. This study collected the demographics of trial participant in trials for New Molecular Entities (NMEs) approved by the U.S. Food Drug Administration (FDA) for 2010 and 2020 to compare demographic representation. Demographic representation of trial participants for 61 FDA-approved NMEs for 2010 and 2020 were gathered; 21 NMEs were excluded from analysis. The trends in demographic representation in trials for the 40 FDA-approved NMEs in 2010 and 2020 were similar, and White participant representation was …
Infant Imitation: Detecting Risk In The First Year With Pediatrac™, Samantha Levick
Infant Imitation: Detecting Risk In The First Year With Pediatrac™, Samantha Levick
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Imitation has pervasive associations with social and communicative development. However, few methods have been developed to measure this construct in typically developing infants, and even fewer are available for atypical populations, such as infants born preterm. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a particular risk of premature birth, is associated with atypical imitation and social communication. Although imitation emerges in infancy, most current screening and diagnostic tools for ASD cannot be utilized prior to 12 months. The present study aimed to develop and validate a caregiver-report measure of infant imitation; characterize imitation profiles at 4, 6, and 9 months in term and …
A Cross Cultural Perspective Of Parental Influence On Children’S Academic Success And Well-Being, Sarah R. Murray
A Cross Cultural Perspective Of Parental Influence On Children’S Academic Success And Well-Being, Sarah R. Murray
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the correlation between parental involvement and student academic achievement through a multicultural lens, with a focus on eastern and western parenting. Parenting styles are proven to significantly influence academic achievement and performance (Brown & Iyengar, 2008), with past research suggesting that children tend to benefit most from being raised by an authoritative parent. However, there is growing evidence that western parenting styles (Baumrind's parenting typology) do not directly correlate with observations of student achievement across cultures. This literature review provides an overview of different parenting styles, highlighting dimensions of parenting such as differences in maternal and paternal …
Did Anyone Ask The Child?: Recognizing Foster Children’S Rights To Make Mature Decisions Through Child-Centered Representation, Katie Chilton
Did Anyone Ask The Child?: Recognizing Foster Children’S Rights To Make Mature Decisions Through Child-Centered Representation, Katie Chilton
Emory Law Journal
A child placed in foster care finds themselves in an especially vulnerable position. Removed from their homes, apart from family, and living with strangers, a foster child’s voice often gets lost in the shuffle. While the Supreme Court has recognized some constitutional rights for children, legislators and judges tread lightly when expanding children’s rights for fear of infringing upon parents’ fundamental rights to determine the care and upbringing of their children. This situation creates a unique disadvantage for a child in foster care who is subject to the trauma of removal, placement in a temporary home of strangers, outside the …

Pulmonary Response To Exercise, Woodsmoke, And Acute Sleep Deprivation, Aidan Da Mccloy, Joseph A. Sol, John C. Quindry
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Our laboratory studied the combined effects of smoke exposure, exercise, and sleep deprivation to better understand the causes of the long-term deleterious health effects of woodsmoke in at risk populations, such as wildland firefighters. The purpose of this paper is to report on the results of our pulmonary function tests (PFT). Ten recreationally active male participants (age = 24±4 yrs.; height = 185.2±3.9 cm; weight = 85.7±9.4 kg; VO2max = 46.8.7±.7 ml∙min¯¹∙kg¯¹; body fat = 12.6±6.7 %) performed two separate 45-minute stationary bicycle workouts (70% VO2max) while exposed to woodsmoke particulate matter <2.5um (PM2.5) at a concentration of 250μg/m3. One trial was performed on 8 hours of sleep and the other on 4 hours of sleep. Duplicate pulmonary data for key dependent measures of PFT (FVC, FEV1%, MVV) taken before and after each workout showed no statistically significant differences between trials or across trials when examined by a two-way ANOVA analysis (FVC time p = 0.949, trial p=0.919, time-trial p=0.837; FEV1 time p=0.684, trial p=0.769, time-trial p=0.857; FEV1% time p=0.540, trial p=0.712, time-trial p=0.986; MVV time p=0.917, trial p=0.633, time-trial p=0.923). These results are consistent with the literature from participants with normal sleep patterns.1 No alterations in acute measures of pulmonary function were observed in apparently healthy individuals exposed to PM2.5 250μg/m3 of woodsmoke during exercise, nor does acute sleep deprivation alter these results.

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The mutualism between legumes and rhizobia is clearly the product of past coevolution. However, the nature of ongoing evolution between these partners is less clear. To characterize the nature of recent coevolution between legumes and rhizobia, we used population genomic analysis to characterize selection on functionally annotated symbiosis genes as well as on symbiosis gene candidates identified through a two-species association analysis. For the association analysis, we inoculated each of 202 accessions of the legume host Medicago truncatula with a community of 88 Sinorhizobia (Ensifer) meliloti strains. Multistrain inoculation, which better reflects the ecological reality of rhizobial selection in nature …

***This book is copyrighted to Dr. Randy Clark and may not be reproduced in any form.***
This revised and greatly expanded “Response to NAR Critics” provides answers and insight regarding the confusion related to my first submission on this subject to Academia. This confusion arose in large part because my response, which was 303 pages, was not posted in full. Only 80 pages were posted. The complete document that should have been posted contained responses from seven students and one professor from Global Awakening Theological Seminary (GATS). This first truncated submission was met with several critical comments, some of which …
Not Coming Home: The Flaws In Skilled Nursing Facilities And Their Contribution To Cyclical Hospitalizations Of Post-Acute Patients, Kate Eisenbraun
Not Coming Home: The Flaws In Skilled Nursing Facilities And Their Contribution To Cyclical Hospitalizations Of Post-Acute Patients, Kate Eisenbraun
Pitzer Senior Theses
This literature review will discuss the experience of patients within the US healthcare system, focusing on skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and their contribution to cyclical hospitalizations. SNFs differ from nursing homes and other long-term care facilities by providing short-term, post-operational rehabilitation at a cost lower than what is offered at hospitals. Despite their critical role, SNFs often face fundamental issues, such as understaffing, underfunding, and staff burn-out, which result in lower quality patient care. This thesis argues that the issues faced by SNFs are a result of inconsistencies with state and federal staffing regulations, as well as inadequate insurance reimbursements. …

Validation Of The Use Of Clathromorphum Compactum Growth And Skeletal Δ18o As A Proxy For Seawater Conditions, Teagan Mcmahon
Pitzer Senior Theses
Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are important organisms that create benthic habitat in the photic zone of oceans worldwide. CCAs mechanisms of photosynthesis and calcification may, in some cases, make them vulnerable to climate change and ocean acidification. Therefore, CCA are important not only for their ecological role within ecosystems but also for their ability to indicate the effects that ocean acidification and climate change may have on other marine calcifying organisms. Some species of CCA are known to be useful recorders of paleo oceanic conditions. These climate archives and reconstructions of past environmental conditions are important for understanding past changes …

Biology Faculty Publications
California sea lions are among the most agile of swimming mammals. Most marine mammals swim with their hind appendages-flippers or flukes, depending on the species-whereas sea lions use their foreflippers for propulsion and maneuvering. The sea lion's propulsive stroke generates thrust by forming a jet between the flippers and the body and by dragging a starting vortex along the suction side of the flipper. Prior experiments using robotic flippers have shown these mechanisms to be possible, but no flow measurements around live sea lions previously existed with which to compare. In this study, the flow structures around swimming sea lions …

Increasing Above And Beyond Behavior Through Social Emotional Learning, Lars Olson
Increasing Above And Beyond Behavior Through Social Emotional Learning, Lars Olson
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has demonstrated utility to schools. Research has shown how SEL programs can be used to improve behavior, academics, and school climate. However, SEL is most often utilized to improve behaviors that are necessary to function within the mores and norms of a classroom setting. These behaviors can be categorized as meeting expectations of the classroom climate; however, there is a lack of research demonstrating that the implementation of an SEL curriculum can also increase the frequency of behaviors that go above and beyond these basic expectations. In order to increase the frequency of behaviors that go …

Methods For Characterization Of Cl-001 Derived Exosomes As A Stimulating Agent For Nk Cells For Immunotherapy, Ilana Gomez Diaz
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The immune system is a complex set of cells in the body that work to prevent disease or infection by recognizing and eliminating foreign material or unhealthy cells. One essential type of immune cell that is part of the innate immune response are Natural Killer (NK) cells. These cytotoxic effector lymphocytes can detect certain unhealthy cells, such as cancer cells, that normal B and T cells would miss. For example, many tumor cells have evolved to bypass immune system surveillance by not expressing major histocompatibility complex class I molecules (MHC class I), on their surface, reducing recognition by cytotoxic T …

Elaboration, Resolution, And Coping In The Covid-19 Narratives Of College Students: Relations To Identity Development, Maha Y. Halabi
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Previous research has shown that talking about highly significant experiences in more elaborative ways and with greater meaning-making is related to better identity development in emerging adults (McLean & Pratt, 2006). Expressing personally significant experiences through narratives allows individuals to construct coherent autobiographical stories about the self, connecting their past, present, and future selves into a coherent whole, which ultimately contributes to healthy identity development (Pennebaker & Seagal, 1999). In this research, we examined the Covid-19 narratives of college students in relation to identity development. Data was collected from 218 emerging adult college students, ages 18 and above, both males …
The Effect Of Young Blood Anti-Aging Treatment On Protein Markers Of Age And Huntington Disease, Sujena H. Koilpillai
The Effect Of Young Blood Anti-Aging Treatment On Protein Markers Of Age And Huntington Disease, Sujena H. Koilpillai
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Huntington disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of a polyglutamine tract within the huntingtin (HTT) protein, forming mutant HTT (mtHTT). HD patients suffer from psychiatric, behavioral, cognitive, and motor abnormalities, with death typically occurring 15-20 years after symptom onset. Currently, there are no treatments able to slow disease progression or delay onset. HD is a disease of aging. Despite the mtHTT protein being produced throughout life, symptoms do not typically appear until adulthood. Furthermore, many cellular effects of normal aging are also seen in HD, including altered intercellular communication and loss of proteostasis. Recently, our lab found …

Regulation Of The Protease Activity For The Mitochondrial Omi/Htra2, Simon Larson
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Human High Temperature requirement A2 (HtrA2) also known as Omi, is a serine protease located in the mitochondria with an important function in both cell survival and death. My results show the proteolytic activity of Omi/HtrA2 varies under different conditions. I characterized the optimal condition for Omi/HtrA2 protease activity using an in vitro assay system. Additionally, I identified a new allosteric regulation of Omi/HtrA2 through interaction with a specific substrate, the MUL1 protein. MUL1 is a multifunctional E3 ubiquitin ligase anchored in the outer mitochondrial membrane with domains both inside mitochondria and in the cytoplasm. The data shown here strongly …

Investigation Of Dna Hybridization In Localized Systems In Close Proximity, Ashley M. Sewsankar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Hybridization of two or more DNA or RNA strands is well documented for the process taking place with all strands free in solution or when one strand is immobilized on a substrate. This study contributes to the investigation of the hybridization process when two single DNA strands (ssDNA) are in close proximity. We took advantage of an X sensor in which hybridization of four DNA strands enables the formation of a DNA four-way junction (crossover or X) structure. We immobilized multiple layers of crossover structures to study its hybridization being triggered by short ssDNA coming from solution and further investigate …
The Relationship Between Sarcopenia And Diabetes Among Different Ethnic Groups, Rachel K. Williams
The Relationship Between Sarcopenia And Diabetes Among Different Ethnic Groups, Rachel K. Williams
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Sarcopenia and diabetes are two conditions that reflect ongoing changes in global health trends: aging and obesity. Sarcopenia affects approximately 10-40% of the global population and type II diabetes affects around 415 million individuals (6.28% globally), with obesity contributing to a majority of the cases. Currently, approximately 9.3% of the population (727 million individuals) is aged 65 years or older; this number is predicted to reach 16% of the global population (around 1.5 billion individuals) in 2050. Many developed countries are undergoing demographic population pyramid rearrangements whereby an increasingly aging population must be supported by a shrinking youth cohort. Sarcopenia …
