Stakeholder Perceptions Of Microplastics Management In Oregon, Maya Hurst-Mayr
Stakeholder Perceptions Of Microplastics Management In Oregon, Maya Hurst-Mayr
Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports
There is currently no federal policy in the United States that specifically addresses microplastics (MPs) pollution. However, states are beginning to act on this issue; California's SB 1422 initiates measurement of MPs in drinking water resources and Senate Bill 1263 requires the state to adopt a strategy to reduce the ecological impact of MPs in marine ecosystems. Other West Coast states like Oregon and Washington are expected to follow California's example. It is important to know what the actors who are a part of shaping MPs policy in Oregon would see as barriers and opportunities to doing so. We conducted …

Voter Suppression Undermines Public Health For All, Erin Grinshteyn, Laura Chyu, Roman Pabayo
Voter Suppression Undermines Public Health For All, Erin Grinshteyn, Laura Chyu, Roman Pabayo
Journal of Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Scholarship
In the US, policies have actively suppressed the voices of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) while amplifying their oppressors’ voices. In spite of multiple constitutional amendments to guarantee access to the right to vote for those who initially were deprived of this right, attacks on this civil liberty have persisted. While some states have expanded access to voting rights in the past year, many others have made voting more difficult and some states have had a mixed approach of making voting easier in some ways and harder in others. This continued interest in creating systems in which it …
Does The Contraction History Of The Muscle Dictate Changes In Strength Following Resistance Training?, Zachary William Bell
Does The Contraction History Of The Muscle Dictate Changes In Strength Following Resistance Training?, Zachary William Bell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within-subject training models, whereby researchers apply an exercise condition to one limb, and a separate exercise condition to the opposing limb, have become routine amongst the exercise literature. However, no study has directly tested whether exercising one limb with a high-load condition will influence strength adaptations within the opposing limb, even when the opposite limb is training. Furthermore, muscle post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) is representing local level changes, however, more research is warranted to understand if this can be differentially impacted with different types (e.g. low load vs. high load) of resistance training. The purpose of this study was to …

"How It Was Made", Bethany Fitts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is a meta-autoethnography describing the researcher’s unfocused, rhizomatic research process throughout the COVID19 pandemic. Themes explored are the COVID19 pandemic, family, death, climate change, queer love, represenation, academia, genre, and religion. The study shows how multiple scales of grief arise during the research process. I locate this method within postcolonial theory of autoethnography that seeks to diversify structures within the academic genre.

Memoria, Historia Y El Feminismo Decolonial: Un Análisis De La Poesía De Cristina Rodríguez Cabral Y Otras Poetas Afrolatinas, Margaree Gabrielle Obioha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the poetic works of Afro-Uruguayan poet Cristina Rodríguez Cabral and other Afro-Uruguayan and Afro-Latina poets and identifies how their works contribute to the body of decolonized feminist literature. The investigation includes the historical context of Black women and Black women poets in Uruguay to set the stage for analyzing the main themes of Rodríguez Cabral’s poetry which include questioning the presentation of Afro-Uruguayan women from a European perspective, the construction of a firm and resilient Afro-Uruguayan woman and the embracing of sisterhood within the African Diaspora. These themes are strongly connected to decolonized feminism in that they …

Electrochemistry, Spectroscopy, And Mass Transport Of Lanthanide Solutes In Bis(Trifluoromethylsulfonyl)Amide-Based Ionic Liquids, Heather Danielle Hamilton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this work, the characterization of lanthanide elements (Dy, Er, Gd, Ho, Tb, Tm, Yb) in various RTIL solvents based on the ubiquitous bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide anion (Tf2N-) was investigated. The effect of cation structure on the mass transport and electron transfer properties of Yb3+ in [X]-Tf2N RTILs is considered, where [X] is one of six quaternary ammonium cations with varying structure and chemical properties. Cyclic staircase voltammetry (CSV), rotating disk electrode voltammetry (RDEV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) experiments are used for this purpose. For each RTIL, the dependence of the redox reaction is examined at each of the working electrodes: …

Preparation, Characterization And In-Vitro Release Studies Of Icg-Encapsulated Liposomes, Prateek Uttreja
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to create Indocyanine Green (ICG) loaded liposomal formulations that were efficient and had controlled drug release. During the Second World War, the photographic dye indocyanine green (ICG) was created. ICG was developed as a medical diagnostic tool for cardiac output tests and for monitoring liver function after receiving FDA approval. The preparation of ICG-encapsulated conventional and PEGylated liposomes containing different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) such as HSPC, DSPC, DPPC and cholesterol (CH) in the molar ratios of 55:45 and PC:CH: DSPE-PEG2K (polyethylene glycol) in the molar ratio of 55:40:5 respectively was done using …

Sherwin Carlquist (1930–2021) was an internationally respected and distinguished botanist who held faculty positions in botany at California Botanic Garden, Claremont Graduate University and Pomona College between 1956 and 1992. His legacy includes major scholarly contributions to plant systematics, plant anatomy, especially wood anatomy, island biogeography, evolutionary and ecological reasoning, and a prolific publication record. A loose collection of paragraphs by those who interacted with him addresses Carlquist's tremendous botanical output, teaching, mentorship, scientific scholarship, and his roles as a colleague and friend.
Presumed Unfit: The Dual Bind Faced By Pregnant And Parenting Youth In Foster Care, Kara R. Finck
Presumed Unfit: The Dual Bind Faced By Pregnant And Parenting Youth In Foster Care, Kara R. Finck
American University Law Review
Pregnant and parenting youth in foster care are subject to a range of laws, policies, and practices that expose the realities of a child welfare system structured to focus on surveillance instead of support and family regulation instead of family integrity. Informed by my experience representing foster youth who become parents, this Article considers how youth in care are presumed unfit to parent their children because of a history in foster care and their age. A youth’s status as pregnant or parenting is weaponized to subject them to additional scrutiny, threats, and a shifting burden to justify their fundamental right …
Natural Law And Universal Human Rights, David F. Forte
Natural Law And Universal Human Rights, David F. Forte
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
Abdullahi An-Na'im has set his life's quest on attempting to find a way that Muslim society can be attuned to the moral commands of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a Western creation. At present, the Shari'a and the Declaration are in obvious tension, if not conflict, in areas such as freedom of religion and the rights of women. An-Na'im finds that the Shari 'a is a creation of man derived in history from an interpretation of Islamic sources. Muslims today can legitimately develop their own interpretation relying on the root sources of Islam, but only so long as those …
The Role Of Glis3 In Zebrafish Endocrine Development And Regeneration, Tasha Swenney
The Role Of Glis3 In Zebrafish Endocrine Development And Regeneration, Tasha Swenney
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Maintenance of proper blood glucose homeostasis is governed by the endocrine cells of the pancreas. Dysregulation of blood glucose is characteristic of the disease, diabetes mellitus. Relatively little is known about the molecular mechanisms that underlie diabetes. The genes associated with more common forms of diabetes remain more enigmatic and likely have less direct roles in blood glucose homeostasis such as glucose sensing, insulin secretion, and β cell maintenance. GLIS3, a transcription factor involved in pancreatic development as well as the transcriptional regulation of insulin has been identified as a risk locus for type 1 and type 2 diabetes …

Using Design Thinking As An Instrument For School Improvement And Innovation In Public Schools, Beth Emery Peterson
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Design thinking, a creative problem-solving method in which the end user is an active member of the design team, has historically been used in business and industry, but school leaders are beginning to use the process in education settings. This multiple-case study examined the experiences of two public school leaders who used design thinking for continuous improvement initiatives or to spur innovation in their school or district. Through interviews, the school leaders shared their purposes, outcomes, challenges, and insights of using design thinking to address complex educational problems. Results indicate that design thinking is appropriate to use for continuous improvement …
Lending A Paw: Does The Presence Of A Dog Increase Donations Given To Homeless Individuals?, Katherine Link
Lending A Paw: Does The Presence Of A Dog Increase Donations Given To Homeless Individuals?, Katherine Link
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Prosocial behavior can be defined as any behavior that results in the benefit of another individual (Coyne et al., 2018). This study sought to investigate potential influences on the prosocial behavior of donating to the homeless. With a rise in both homelessness and dog ownership, this project sought to investigate how the presence of a dog may impact both the willingness to donate and monetary amount donated to a homeless individual. Results indicated a significant three-way interaction between the sex of the homeless individual, the sex of the participant, and the presence of a dog. Overall, the presence of a …
Barriers To Mental Health Service Use And Preferred Treatment Format Among Racial And Ethnic Minorities, Jasmine Maxwell
Barriers To Mental Health Service Use And Preferred Treatment Format Among Racial And Ethnic Minorities, Jasmine Maxwell
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
One of the most pressing concerns in mental healthcare is the limited use of mental health services across the country. Research has indicated that individuals from racial/ethnic minority groups are significantly less likely to seek mental health services, which has led many to examine specific barriers to treatment-seeking. Given research that has suggested that barriers to treatment-seeking may be structural, attitudinal, or cultural in nature, this study aimed to gain a better understanding of the relationship between these barriers and willingness to seek psychological help. Another goal of the current study was to examine the role of online therapy in …

The Effect Of Intellectual Disability On The Perception Of The Validity Of Confessions, Audree Carner
The Effect Of Intellectual Disability On The Perception Of The Validity Of Confessions, Audree Carner
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Research shows that false confessions are more likely to occur in certain vulnerable populations, one of those being individuals with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the current study was to gain insight into the current knowledge and attitudes the layperson has about the possibility of an individual with an intellectual disability falsely confessing. Data were collected from 180 participants and after exclusion criteria were implemented, 94 participants were included in the current sample. It was hypothesized that participants would more often rate suspects as guilty and be more confident in their verdict if the suspect did not have an intellectual …
The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On The Development Of Stem Identity, Choice, And Persistence, Shawna Adams
The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On The Development Of Stem Identity, Choice, And Persistence, Shawna Adams
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This mixed-methods study seeks to investigate the direct effect that socioeconomic status (SES) has on a student's identity, choice, and persistence in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). There is a diversity and wage gap among the STEM workforce, which is comprised largely of White males with higher salaries than their counterparts. Underrepresented minority groups (URMs) are more likely to come from low SES and typically have fewer educational resources. Identifying the relationship of SES across student groups can yield insights about how to address inequitable practices and increase STEM diversity. Quantitative data was collected via a STEM survey, …
