Alteration In Facial Contour Associated With Aging: Case Report, Bohan Lin Ba, Dds, Louis Mandel Dds Jan 2022

Alteration In Facial Contour Associated With Aging: Case Report, Bohan Lin Ba, Dds, Louis Mandel Dds

The New York State Dental Journal

The authors examined a 73-year-old female because of a chief complaint of bilateral swellings of the parotid gland. After detailed questioning, the authors determined that the perceived facial swelling was caused by the inferior displacement of separate and identifiable facial fat compartments. Aging coupled with gravity results in both a compartmental and intracompartment inferior displacement of facial fat. Long-lasting fillers injected intra-or extra-compartmentally also partake in this inferior migration.

Investigation Of Behavioral And Cognitive Traits Affecting Dispersal Tendencies In Eastern Mostquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Jennifer Dougherty Jan 2022

Investigation Of Behavioral And Cognitive Traits Affecting Dispersal Tendencies In Eastern Mostquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Jennifer Dougherty

Theses

Dispersal plays an important role in ecological and evolutionary processes. Despite being important to population and invasion dynamics, more information is needed to understand what traits act as drivers of dispersal tendencies. Here, we examined how different behavioral, environmental, and cognitive traits predicted dispersal tendency in the Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). We examined how chronic exposure to an antidepressant affects different behaviors and dispersal in wild- caught G. holbrooki. We then tested additional behaviors and their relationship to dispersal tendency. We found that exposure to fluoxetine did not affect performance in any of the behavioral assays or on dispersal. In …

Population Genomics Of A Rare Plant : Tiehm's Buckwheat, Benjamin M. Cecil Jan 2022

Population Genomics Of A Rare Plant : Tiehm's Buckwheat, Benjamin M. Cecil

Theses

Eriogonum tiehmii is a rare plant found in Nevada with a range of approximately three hectares (Morefield, 2020). E. tiehmii is of particular interest due to lithium and boron in the soil. This area is one of only two known lithium-boron deposits globally (Fluor Enterprises 2020). This makes its habitat prime mining location. E. tiehmii is being considered for protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973. The objectives of the study were to determine the closest relative of E. tiehmii by estimating genetic relationships between E. tiehmii and other taxa, and to describe the genetic structure among E. …

Experimental Investigation Of Swept Bio-Inspired Wing Planforms, Arnab Chatterjee Jan 2022

Experimental Investigation Of Swept Bio-Inspired Wing Planforms, Arnab Chatterjee

Theses

The aerodynamic efficiency of the Swift (Apus Apus) and its resultant wing morphology merit further study for applications towards micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). Three bio-inspired wing planforms form the focus of this study to investigate the impact of sweep and spanwise chord variation on their local flow physics. The suction side flow characteristics are investigated using 2D particle image velocimetry (at Re = 4.0 × 104 and 6.0 × 104) to identify the effects induced by the planform geometry, followed by direct force measurements (at Re = 6.0 × 104) to correlate the …

Characterization Of Trat Protein Encoded In Incf Resistance Plasmids, Katelyn Ashley Lott Jan 2022

Characterization Of Trat Protein Encoded In Incf Resistance Plasmids, Katelyn Ashley Lott

Theses

Drug-resistant infections pose serious medical threats, and causative resistance genes spread through plasmid conjugation. The TraT protein is a virulence factor encoded in drug-resistance F-plasmids. TraT itself provides protection from conjugation, serum complement, and bacteriophages, but the protective mechanism is unknown. To facilitate mechanism studies, I developed improved purification protocols for isolation of the soluble domain of F-plasmid TraT from Escherichia coli. Wild-type TraT and two variants were obtained. TraT domain forms several types of oligomers in vitro, also observed in full-length TraT. This oligomerization is stable without membrane attachment and in broad range of salt concentrations. Purified …

Transversality Conditions For Geodesics On The Statistical Manifold Of Multivariate Gaussian Distributions, Trevor Herntier, Adrian M. Peter Jan 2022

Transversality Conditions For Geodesics On The Statistical Manifold Of Multivariate Gaussian Distributions, Trevor Herntier, Adrian M. Peter

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of finding the closest multivariate Gaussian distribution on a constraint surface of all Gaussian distributions to a given distribution. Previous research regarding geodesics on the multivariate Gaussian manifold has focused on finding closed-form, shortest-path distances between two fixed distributions on the manifold, often restricting the parameters to obtain the desired solution. We demonstrate how to employ the techniques of the calculus of variations with a variable endpoint to search for the closest distribution from a family of distributions generated via a constraint set on the parameter manifold. Furthermore, we examine the intermediate distributions along the learned …

Determination Of Mutation Rates With Two Symmetric And Asymmetric Mutation Types, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow, Van Minh Nguyen, Richard R. Sinden, Ryan T. White

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We revisit our earlier paper, with two of the coauthors, in which we proposed an unbiased and consistent estimator (Formula presented.) for an unknown mutation rate (Formula presented.) of microorganisms. Previously, we proved that the associated sequence of estimators (Formula presented.) converges to (Formula presented.) almost surely pointwise on a nonextinct set (Formula presented.). Here, we show that this sequence converges also in the mean square with respect to conditional probability measure (Formula presented.) and that, with respect to (Formula presented.) the estimator is asymptotically unbiased. We further assume that a microorganism can mutate or turn to a different variant …

Forecasting The Outcomes Of Managing A Rare Endemic Plant At Its Elevational Limit Under Climate Change Scenarios, Ethan Reibsome Jan 2022

Forecasting The Outcomes Of Managing A Rare Endemic Plant At Its Elevational Limit Under Climate Change Scenarios, Ethan Reibsome

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Lupinus constancei (Lassics lupine) is an exceptionally rare forb with a population that in 2020 consisted of 1,300 individuals located on two adjacent mountaintops in northwestern California, USA. Past work has demonstrated the species is threatened by high levels of seed predation by small mammals, which is likely the result of fire exclusion and the subsequent vegetation encroachment that both increases small mammal habitat and directly reduces suitable habitat for the species. Because of this, active management through caging of reproductive individuals to reduce seed consumption has been conducted every year since 2003. In addition, growing season temperatures have increased …

Degradation And Nitrogen Cycling In The Context Of Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function Relationships In The Inquiline Bacterial Community Of Darlingtonia Californica, Megan Teigen Jan 2022

Degradation And Nitrogen Cycling In The Context Of Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function Relationships In The Inquiline Bacterial Community Of Darlingtonia Californica, Megan Teigen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Biodiversity-ecosystem function (BEF) research aims to explain how species and their environments interact with each other. Microbial communities engage in vital biogeochemical pathways in a variety of natural ecosystems, and yet there are large knowledge gaps about the specific metabolic pathways in which they are involved. Degradation specifically contributes to nitrogen cycling globally through the breakdown of large organic nitrogen compounds into small inorganic nitrogen that is necessary for the survival of many other organisms. In this study, I focused on the degradative function of the inquiline microbial communities found within the carnivorous pitcher plant, Darlingtonia californica. Darlingtonia grows in …

The Role Of Age In Organizational Knowledge Sharing: A Systematic Literature Review, Kalee Crandall, Kodey Crandall, Omar El-Gayar

Research & Publications

Many organizations emphasize the importance of sharing knowledge to create a supportive learning culture. However, motivating employees to share knowledge can be challenging, especially in an age-diverse organization. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to explore recent studies that focus on age and knowledge sharing to identify gaps in the literature and guide future research directions. With the recent increase in studies exploring the influence of age on knowledge sharing, this review categorizes articles from the Web of Science, IEEE, Science Direct, and the ACM Digital Library that focus on age and knowledge sharing into key elements of …

In Vivo Metabolic Analysis Of The Anticancer Effects Of Plasma-Activated Saline In Three Tumor Animal Models, Miao Qi, Dehui Xu, Shuai Wang, Bing Li, Sansan Peng, Qiaosong Li, Hao Zhang, Runze Fan, Hai-Lan Chen, Michael G. Kong

Bioelectrics Publications

In recent years, the emerging technology of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) has grown rapidly along with the many medical applications of cold plasma (e.g., cancer, skin disease, tissue repair, etc.). Plasma-activated liquids (e.g., culture media, water, or normal saline, previously exposed to plasma) are being studied as cancer treatments, and due to their advantages, many researchers prefer plasma-activated liquids as an alternative to CAP in the treatment of cancer. In this study, we showed that plasma-activated-saline (PAS) treatment significantly inhibited tumor growth, as compared with saline, in melanoma, and a low-pH environment had little effect on tumor growth in …

Endothelial Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Impair The Angiogenic Response Of Coronary Artery Endothelial Cells, Nigeste Carter, Allison H. Mathiesen, Noel Miller, Michael Brown, Ruben M.L. Colunga Biancatelli, John D. Catravas, Anca D. Dobrian Jan 2022

Endothelial Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Impair The Angiogenic Response Of Coronary Artery Endothelial Cells, Nigeste Carter, Allison H. Mathiesen, Noel Miller, Michael Brown, Ruben M.L. Colunga Biancatelli, John D. Catravas, Anca D. Dobrian

Bioelectrics Publications

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most prominent cause of death of adults in the United States with coronary artery disease being the most common type of CVD. Following a myocardial event, the coronary endothelium plays an important role in the recovery of the ischemic myocardium. Specifically, endothelial cells (EC) must be able to elicit a robust angiogenic response necessary for tissue revascularization and repair. However, local or distant cues may prevent effective revascularization. Extracellular vesicles (EV) are produced by all cells and endothelium is a rich source of EVs that have access to the main circulation thereby potentially impacting local …

How To Alleviate Cardiac Injury From Electric Shocks At The Cellular Level, Pamela W. Sowa, Aleksander S. Kiełbik, Andrei G. Pakhomov, Emily Gudvangen, Uma Mangalanathan, Volker Adams, Olga N. Pakhomova Jan 2022

How To Alleviate Cardiac Injury From Electric Shocks At The Cellular Level, Pamela W. Sowa, Aleksander S. Kiełbik, Andrei G. Pakhomov, Emily Gudvangen, Uma Mangalanathan, Volker Adams, Olga N. Pakhomova

Bioelectrics Publications

Electric shocks, the only effective therapy for ventricular fibrillation, also electroporate cardiac cells and contribute to the high-mortality post-cardiac arrest syndrome. Copolymers such as Poloxamer 188 (P188) are known to preserve the membrane integrity and viability of electroporated cells, but their utility against cardiac injury from cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) remains to be established. We studied the time course of cell killing, mechanisms of cell death, and protection with P188 in AC16 human cardiomyocytes exposed to micro- or nanosecond pulsed electric field (μsPEF and nsPEF) shocks. A 3D printer was customized with an electrode holder to precisely position electrodes orthogonal to …

Off-Label Innovations, David A. Simon Jan 2022

Off-Label Innovations, David A. Simon

Georgia Law Review

Modern medicine faces many significant problems. This Article is about two of them. The first is that approved drugs have many potential therapeutic uses that are never identified, investigated, or developed. The second is the routine practice of physicians prescribing approved drugs for unapproved uses—so-called “off-label” uses. These problems seem very different. Failure to invest in potential new uses is an innovation problem: firms lack incentives to research and develop new uses of old drugs. The problem of off-label uses, on the other hand, is one of safety and efficacy: off-label uses are risky because they are not supported by …

Efforts To Create A Trauma-Informed Classroom In Higher Education: Insights From Members Of A Community College Trauma-Informed Teaching Group, Danyelle Marshall Jan 2022

Efforts To Create A Trauma-Informed Classroom In Higher Education: Insights From Members Of A Community College Trauma-Informed Teaching Group, Danyelle Marshall

Doctoral Dissertations

BIPOC students attending a community college in the Bay Area bring traumas to school with them and then they relive their traumas in the classroom through professors’ pedagogy and the curriculum. This dissertation which was conducted during twin pandemics of COVID 19 and racism, researched a group of English professors that teach first generation community college students in their second year and above to understand what they know about trauma and their students and how they begin to conceive efforts to develop trauma-informed pedagogy. Data were collected using a focus group and individual interviews. The focus group created an environment …

Green Energy Usage In The United States, Chad Hyer Jan 2022

Green Energy Usage In The United States, Chad Hyer

Ballard Brief

Greenhouse gas emissions are the largest contributor to climate change. Green energy solutions prove a promising approach to remedying these emissions, but major economic reliance on fossil fuels, complacent and dismissive attitudes towards climate change, and political polarization and gridlock have encouraged inaction regarding the adoption of green energy in the United States. Such inaction has led to a host of consequences that are detrimental to the United States's environment, economy, and international image. Some efforts by NG0s and for-profit companies have helped remediate such inaction. This brief aims to address the context, contributing factors, and consequences of this inaction …

Sexual Abuse Of Children In The United States Foster Care System, Abigail Hessing Jan 2022

Sexual Abuse Of Children In The United States Foster Care System, Abigail Hessing

Ballard Brief

Foster care is a long-running and relatively commonplace system in the US: however, in 2019 there were an estimated 400,000 children in foster care, leaving the system overwhelmed and at its peak capacity. Of those children, it is estimated that up to 40% of them had experienced some type of abuse within the system. Looking at sexual abuse specifically, vulnerable children are often targeted by sexual predators, and when grouped together in a system underequipped to provide adequate protection, foster care children can become easily accessible targets for sexual abuse. Caretakers who are undersupported and households that are overfilled create …

Covenants, Kinship, And Caring For The Destitute In The Book Of Amos, Joshua M. Matson Jan 2022

Covenants, Kinship, And Caring For The Destitute In The Book Of Amos, Joshua M. Matson

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

At the outset of the book of Amos, the Old Testament prophet captures the attention of the ancient Israelites when he condemns the inhabitants of Tyre, a port city north of Israel often used synonymously to reference the Phoenicians, for not remembering “the brotherly covenant” (Amos 1:9), or as it appears in a different translation, “the covenant of kinship” (1:9 NRSV). [1] The Israelites easily recognized and eagerly accepted this condemnation because they were the victims of the covenantal breach from one of their neighboring regional powers. [2] Amos, however, did not travel from the southern kingdom of Judah to …

Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications

This chapter shines the light on how helping students re-perceive their experiences with failure allows them to boost confidence, well-being, and belongingness. The authors share a practice for re-perceiving failure—mindfulness-metacognition-mindset shift—which is applicable in nearly every situation where failure or difficulty can be encountered. Guidance is provided for implementing this practice within and beyond research settings.

This century has introduced very deadly, dangerous, and infectious diseases to humankind such as the influenza virus, Ebola virus, Zika virus, and the most infectious SARS-CoV-2 commonly known as COVID-19 and have caused epidemics and pandemics across the globe. For some of these diseases, proper medications, and vaccinations are missing and the early detection of these viruses will be critical to saving the patients. And even the vaccines are available for COVID-19, the new variants of COVID-19 such as Delta, and Omicron are spreading at large. The available virus detection techniques take a long time, are costly, and complex and …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Fish oil (FO) has been demonstrated to activate brown thermogenesis and attenuate inflammation in the brown adipose tissue (BAT). Previously, we have reported thatmaternal FO supplementation promotes BAT activity of the weaned mice pups. However, whether maternal FO intake could confer sustainable metabolic benefits to offspring remains uncovered. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the differential impact of maternal FO during pregnancy versus lactation on BAT transcriptome and evaluate the role of bioactive lipid metabolites derived from maternal FO supplementation on the extended metabolic benefits of older pups in the context of type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Conclusions: Our results suggested …

Recognition Of Extracellular Dna By Type Iv Pili Promotes Biofilm Formation By Clostridioides Difficile, Leslie A. Ronish, Ben Sidner, Yafan Yu, Kurt H. Piepenbrink Jan 2022

Recognition Of Extracellular Dna By Type Iv Pili Promotes Biofilm Formation By Clostridioides Difficile, Leslie A. Ronish, Ben Sidner, Yafan Yu, Kurt H. Piepenbrink

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive bacillus, which is a frequent cause of gastrointestinal infections triggered by the depletion of the gut microbiome. Because of the frequent recurrence of these infections after antibiotic treatment, mechanisms of C. difficile persistence and recurrence, including biofilm formation, are of increasing interest. Previously, our group and others found that type IV pili, filamentous helical appendages polymerized from protein subunits, promoted microcolony and biofilm formation in C. difficile. In Gram-negative bacteria, the ability of type IV pili to mediate bacterial self-association has been explained through interactions between the pili of adjacent cells, but type …

Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) or respiratory chain complex IV is a heme aa3- copper oxygen reductase containing metal centers essential for holo-complex biogenesis and enzymatic function that are assembled by subunit-specific metallochaperones. The enzyme has two copper sites located in the catalytic core subunits. The COX1 subunit harbors the CuB site that tightly associates with heme a3 while the COX2 subunit contains the binuclear CuA site. Here, we report that in human cells the CcO copper chaperones form macromolecular assemblies and cooperate with several twin CX9C proteins to control heme a biosynthesis and coordinate copper transfer sequentially to the …
