Homicide Patterns In Urban Places:A Geospatial Analysis Of Homicide In Baltimore, M.D., Kayla Toohy
Homicide Patterns In Urban Places:A Geospatial Analysis Of Homicide In Baltimore, M.D., Kayla Toohy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Extant criminological research examining research questions oriented on understanding the spatial distribution of violent crime instances, such as homicide, have often employed the theoretical foundations of both social disorganization theory and routine activities theory. Though there is much research using these theories independently and in conjunction with one another, few studies have integrated the theories in analyses of homicide at multiple levels of aggregation. The current study is conducted to analyze homicide incidents in Baltimore, Maryland from 2014 through 2018. The analysis conducted considers both social disorganization and routine activities theory variables to test the explanatory power of each theory …
Castle Of Unknowing: An Immersive Virtual Reality Experience, Damian Thorn-Hauswirth
Castle Of Unknowing: An Immersive Virtual Reality Experience, Damian Thorn-Hauswirth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Castle of Unknowing is a rendered virtual reality (VR) experience presented as visual poem. As VR is a nascent technology, content is still limited, and methods of storytelling are not yet formalized. My film seeks to expand the breadth of what types of narratives are being told with this medium. The project is an immersive, experiential narrative imbued with symbolism. The viewer moves through a fixed sequence as they are taken on a journey which mixes elements of sci-fi, fairy tale, and surrealism. It utilizes compelling visuals and sound instead of traditional narrative to evoke an emotional response within the …
Uncovering Ophelia: The Reclamation Of Women's Madness Through Feminist Disability Studies, Amy Crawford
Uncovering Ophelia: The Reclamation Of Women's Madness Through Feminist Disability Studies, Amy Crawford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In his essay "The Philosophy of Composition," Edgar Allan Poe proclaims that "the death of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world," and this sentiment remains curiously persistent within the literary world. Artists have looked towards their beautiful muses for centuries as a source of inspiration and introspection, and the faces that these muses wear were often swooning, longing, or even dead. Nineteenth-century British aesthetics solidified a gendered ideology that remains prevalent to this day; in particular, one subculture of Victorian aesthetics that emerged during this period was the Cult of Ophelia: a collection of …

Plasmonic Sensor Based Detection Of Dopamine, Sang Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
With a rapidly ageing population, neurological diseases are becoming increasingly relevant in the design of public health policies and strategies in western societies. In the last decades, biochemical research has consistently shown the critical role that neurotransmitters and their associated metabolites play as biomarkers in tracking and diagnosis of different brain disorders and cancers. In particular, dopamine, an organic electrochemical neurotransmitter, has been shown to be paramount for the proper functioning of the neural system. Dopamine's dysfunction, has been shown to underlie the pathogenesis in several neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, depression, chronic schizophrenia and psychosis. Unfortunately, currently available …

Polymer Derived Ceramic For Lithium-Ion Storage, And Electrospun Polyelectrolyte Fiber For Heavy Metal Ions Removal, Zeyang Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This dissertation includes two major projects. The first project investigated the great potential of polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) as lithium-ion battery anode materials with good cycling stability and large capacity. SiCNO ceramic nanoparticles were produced by pyrolysis of polysilazane nanoparticles synthesized via an oil-in-oil emulsion crosslinking. The SiCNO nanoparticles had an average particle size of around 9 nm and contained graphitic carbon, Si3N4, and SiO2 domains. The electrochemical behavior of SiCNO nanoparticles anode was investigated to evaluate the Li-ion storage performance and understand its mechanism of Li-ion storage. The lithiation of SiCNO was observed at ~0.385 V versus Li/Li+. The anode …

Decentralized Digital Fabrication Of Flexible Micro/Nano Devices Using A Laserjet Printer, Arshya Bamshad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The fabrication of traditional micro/nano devices requires access to cleanrooms, complex and expensive tools, and highly-skilled labor. A facile and digital do-it-yourself (DIY) technique for the fabrication of low-cost devices on flexible substrates (paper, cloth, and plastic films) is presented in this work. A set of office-grade equipment (i.e., laserjet printer, thermal laminator, computer-aided paper cutter), and commercially available supplies (i.e., baking wax paper, furniture restoration metal-leaf) are utilized. The presented technology enables community-embedded production by removing a high technological barrier. The validity of the proposed technology was proved by designing three levels of experiments, i.e., patterns, devices, and systems. …
Gender And Madness In Victorian Britain, Amy Milne-Smith
Gender And Madness In Victorian Britain, Amy Milne-Smith
History Faculty Publications
For decades, the history of gender and madness was a story about women. Individuals deemed lunatics were universally treated as passive victims of medio-legal forces beyond their control. New generations of scholars have looked beyond power binaries to interrogate the complex network of gender, class, family, and culture to place ‘the mad’ as historical actors in a complex and often contradictory story. This article reflects on some major themes in the British historiography of Victorian gender and madness since the mid-20th century. It highlights how feminist and anti-psychiatrist interdisciplinary works inspired new generations of historians to place gender at the …
Trade Secrecy And Innovation In Forensic Technology, Eli Siems, Katherine J. Strandburg, Nicholas Vincent
Trade Secrecy And Innovation In Forensic Technology, Eli Siems, Katherine J. Strandburg, Nicholas Vincent
Faculty Articles
Trade secrecy is a major barrier to public scrutiny of probabilistic software tools that are increasingly used at all stages of the criminal system, from policing and investigation through trial and sentencing. Such tools allow prosecutors to leverage imperfect forensic evidence, such as DNA mixtures, smudged fingerprints, and grainy video footage. Probabilistic software tools unavoidably rely on potentially contestable assumptions, parameters, and implementation choices. Judicially recognized trade secrecy in criminal cases impedes scrutiny of these tools by defendants and the public. Previous critics have focused on secrecy’s potential to undermine the integrity and fairness of the criminal justice system, invoking …

The Impact Of Bostock V. Clayton County On Access To Health Care For Lgbtq Persons, Hiba B. Al-Ramahi
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
LGBTQ individuals face countless acts of discrimination in health care insurance and delivery. In spite of this inequality, there are zero LGBTQ-inclusive health insurance protections in over half of the United States. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (Title VII) and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) are two federal statutes that prohibit discrimination, in relevant part, on the basis of sex. Both federal statutes have been greatly impacted by the Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, which interpreted “sex” in Title VII to include gender identity and sexual orientation. This …

“Woman Enough” To Win? An Analysis Of Sex Testing In College Athletics, Brenna M. Moreno
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
In recent years, dozens of bills restricting the rights of transgender, or trans, individuals have been introduced in state legislatures throughout the country. To date, ten states have successfully passed laws prohibiting trans athletes from competing on teams in accordance with their gender identities. For its athletes, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the United States’ largest intercollegiate athletic organization, has pursued a compromise to balance trans inclusion and fair competition. Established in 2011, the NCAA’s conditionally inclusive policy permits trans women—meaning those who were assigned the sex of male but identify as women—to compete on a women’s team only …

Qualitative Analysis Of Agarwood Oil By Two-Dimensional Thin Layer Chromatography, Phawida Yodthongchai
Qualitative Analysis Of Agarwood Oil By Two-Dimensional Thin Layer Chromatography, Phawida Yodthongchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A comprehensive two-dimensional thin layer chromatography (2D-TLC) has been developed for the separation of agarwood oil. The system employed a single stationary phase of silica gel 60 and two different mobile phases from the set of 9:1 (v/v) hexane/ethyl acetate, 1:1 (v/v) hexane/dichloromethane, dichloromethane, and acetonitrile. The best mobile phase system was found to be dichloromethane and 9:1 (v/v) hexane/ethyl acetate in the first and second dimensional separations, respectively. This showed the greater separation results with the orthogonality (A0) of 0.6636 based on the asterisk approximation which separated 14 spots of the agarwood sample compared with 9 spots separated by …
Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez
Re-Imagining Design For Affordable Housing In Mexico, Kenza Fernandez Dominguez
Scripps Senior Theses
Since the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto, affordable housing developments in Mexico have been produced in a massive, unsustainable scale. The speed at which these developments are produced equates to the carelessness that goes into their planning. At large, the developments’ monotonous design is aesthetically dehumanizing and fails to promote a sense of community. These developments lack basic infrastructure, and their residents have abandoned them, which has incentivized increased criminal activity.
In this paper, I will be looking at successful models of affordable housing globally, exploring the histories of communal living, and function of architectural collages. Based on my findings, …

Genomic Changes Associated With Transitions To Heterospory And Genome Downsizing In Land Plants, Rijan R. Dhakal
Genomic Changes Associated With Transitions To Heterospory And Genome Downsizing In Land Plants, Rijan R. Dhakal
Theses
Green plants, ubiquitous and essential in the biosphere, have two reproductive life cycles: heterosporous and homosporous. Heterosporous plants are generally seen more often in daily life and tend to be the source of staple foods. Heterosporous reproduction has evolved at least 11 times from ancestral homosporous lineages. Heterospory, presumed to have selective advantages, has a perplexing correlation with chromosome numbers. Here I have used novel data, tools, and methodology to discover 19, so far unknown, gene families, with the potential to explain the correlation between the reproductive life cycle in green plants and chromosome numbers. The discovery of these gene …
