Predicting Carbon Stocks In Tidal Marsh Soils, Fidaa Janoudi Jan 2022

Predicting Carbon Stocks In Tidal Marsh Soils, Fidaa Janoudi

Open Access Master's Theses

Tidal marsh soils serve as important blue carbon storage sink ecosystems which are currently being threatened by rising sea levels. Previous studies have suggested that exist-ing estimates of tidal marsh blue carbon stocks may be inaccurate and overestimated. Currently, we do not have a clear quantification of how much soil organic carbon (SOC), also referred to as blue carbon in coastal ecosystems, is being stored in tidal marsh soils, and how influential geomorphic factors could be on soil carbon stocks. In this study, our goal was to use geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools to model soil organic …

Covid-19 Vaccine Brand Hesitancy And Other Challenges To Vaccination In The Philippines, Arianna Maever L. Amit, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, Lourdes S. Tanchanco, Manuel Dayrit Jan 2022

Covid-19 Vaccine Brand Hesitancy And Other Challenges To Vaccination In The Philippines, Arianna Maever L. Amit, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, Lourdes S. Tanchanco, Manuel Dayrit

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Effective and safe COVID-19 vaccines have been developed at a rapid and unprecedented pace to control the spread of the virus, and prevent hospitalisations and deaths. However, COVID-19 vaccine uptake is challenged by vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaccination sentiments, a global shortage of vaccine supply, and inequitable vaccine distribution especially among low- and middle-income countries including the Philippines. In this paper, we explored vaccination narratives and challenges experienced and observed by Filipinos during the early vaccination period. We interviewed 35 individuals from a subsample of 1,599 survey respondents 18 years and older in the Philippines. The interviews were conducted in Filipino, …

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The global COVID-19 crisis has turned public attention to the special need for accessing those cutting-edge studies that are needed for further scientific innovation. Theses and dissertations (TDs) are prominent examples of such studies. TDs are academic research projects conducted by graduate students to acquire a high academic degree, such as a PhD. They encompass not only knowledge about basic science but also knowledge that generates social and economic value for society. Therefore, access to TDs is imperative for promoting science and innovation.

Open access to scientific publications has been in the focus of public policy discourse for two decades, …

Mindfulness And The Veteran: Increasing Veteran Participation In Mindfulness Programs At A Va Medical Center, Cynthia Lang-Groening

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) supports the use of mindfulness-based therapies for the medical and mental health treatment of veterans. The Wilmington, Delaware VA Medical Center (VAMC) offers mindfulness-based programs in guided imagery, tai chi and mindful meditation; however, the veterans who receive primary care services do not participate in these programs to their full potential. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to increase veteran participation in the mindfulness-based programs at the Wilmington VAMC. Based on a retrospective chart review of veterans’ electronic medical records (EMR), mindfulness-based program referral and enrollment patterns were analyzed, and …

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine if social vs nonsocial cues (peer vs light/ tone) can serve as discriminative stimuli to reinstate cocaine seeking. In addition, to assess a potential mechanism, an oxytocin (OT) promoter-linked hM3Dq DREADD was infused into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus to determine whether peer-induced cocaine seeking is decreased by activation of OT neurons. Male rats underwent twice-daily self-administration sessions, once with cocaine in the presence of one peer (S+) and once with saline in the presence of a different peer (S-). Another experiment used similar procedures, except the discriminative stimuli were nonsocial …

Discourse Of Gaming: A Conceptual Framework Of Gaming As An Interpretive Community, Gregory P. Perreault, Teresa Lynch Jan 2022

Discourse Of Gaming: A Conceptual Framework Of Gaming As An Interpretive Community, Gregory P. Perreault, Teresa Lynch

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Situating gaming as a cultural practice aimed at con-structing issues of power through cultural discussions necessitates a framework of discourse of gaming to explain how meanings around gaming practice develop. Built on the premise that gaming offers mul-timodal opportunities for interaction, we introduce the discourse of gaming framework to connect pro-cesses of boundary work, definition making, and legit-imization to the activities of gaming, the gamer’s identity, and the consequences of gaming. Through a survey of Reddit gaming fan communities, discourse of gaming here reflects the power perceived outsiders (e.g., journalists, academics, and politicians) have on shaping the discourse.

Cross-Cultural Communication In A Crisis: The Universality Of Visual Narrative In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael D. Murray Jan 2022

Cross-Cultural Communication In A Crisis: The Universality Of Visual Narrative In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

A primary goal of twenty-first century legal works is to communicate the law effectively to diverse audiences. Many of the most needful and most vulnerable audiences for legal information have members who lack basic literacy skills and suffer linguistic and cultural confusion from verbal textual media—namely, the printed word. Yet for centuries, legal rules and government restrictions have been communicated nearly exclusively through the printed word. Recent scholarship in visual legal rhetoric, visual literacy studies, and visual cultural studies is informed by cognitive psychology and neuroscience that all points to a solution: visual communication of the law. Visual communication is …

These Brutal Indignities: The Case For Crimes Against Humanity In Black America, Tiffany D. Atkins Jan 2022

These Brutal Indignities: The Case For Crimes Against Humanity In Black America, Tiffany D. Atkins

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

There is nothing we can do. Not guilty. No indictment. There is nothing we can do. As cases of violence and police killings of Black Americans continue to rise, "there's nothing we can do" seems like the default response from the American justice system. Despite the evidence, police officers enjoy the protection of qualified immunity to insulate them from the consequences of their deadly actions. Prosecutors, who often work closely with police, decline to press criminal charges, or if charges are raised, they rarely lead to convictions. Instead of protecting its citizens from violence and loss of life, the American …

Affective And Cognitive Processes In Cancer Narratives, Monica Kah-Pei Liaw, Su-Hie Ting, Kee-Man Chuah, Collin Jerome Jan 2022

Affective And Cognitive Processes In Cancer Narratives, Monica Kah-Pei Liaw, Su-Hie Ting, Kee-Man Chuah, Collin Jerome

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Research on cancer narratives has not contextualised emotional and cognitive processes in stages of coping. The study examined linguistic indicators of affective and cognitive processes in narratives of 31 Malaysian cancer survivors. The analysis of the 58,787-word transcript using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (liwc) software revealed that coping with cancer is a case of mind over emotions, with 12.52% of words related to cognitive processes and 4.17% to affective processes. Frequently used words linked to cognitive processes indicated the cancer survivors’ rationalisations of their denial of the diagnosis and explanations of treatment. Frequently used positive affective words reflect their …

Auto-Part Terms In Thai : A Cognitive Semantic Analysis, Unchalee Singnoi Wongwattana Jan 2022

Auto-Part Terms In Thai : A Cognitive Semantic Analysis, Unchalee Singnoi Wongwattana

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article presents an investigation of Thai auto-part terms in Cognitive Semantics. With at least 1,000 auto-part terms in our data analysis, we argue that the conceptual naming strategy is linguistically effective in understanding auto parts in the Thai culture. Metaphorically, the resemblance operation enhances the degree of lexical richness by enabling the auto-part conceptualization with four source domains: surrounding object, animal, human, and plant. Metonymically, source domains such as shape, function, part, material, position, involved organ, motion, sound and space function in the source-in-target operation, and the category machine/ device appears as a source domain in the target-in-source operation. …

Recovery In Ten: An Inclusive Model Of Recovery For Rising Generations, Sydney Alexandra Camargo Jan 2022

Recovery In Ten: An Inclusive Model Of Recovery For Rising Generations, Sydney Alexandra Camargo

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

For decades, the 12-step model has been the go-to for substance use treatment. Programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous have given individuals in recovery the space to recover and reclaim their lives. However, research has shown this recovery to be directly influenced by the individual’s religion and his or her reliance on a higher power. For those who subscribe to a religion outside of Christianity, or have no religious backing at all, 12-step program can be disadvantageous. The lack of true inclusivity, as well as the verbal degradation of one’s self, has turned many away from this method. For those who …

Commercial Surrogacy: Building Families Outside Of Family Law, Sylvie Armstrong Jan 2022

Commercial Surrogacy: Building Families Outside Of Family Law, Sylvie Armstrong

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Assisted Reproductive Technology continues to grow in popularity. Commercial surrogacy has proved no exception to this trend. However, lack of regulation at the international, federal, and state levels has given rise to a myriad of ethical and legal problems. This article considers the taxonomical question that any regulator must ask: Which field of law ought to be responsible for regulating this industry? It argues that although commercial surrogacy is often discussed as part of the family law rubric, on closer inspection, family law is fundamentally ill-suited to meet the needs of those involved in commercial surrogacy. By demonstrating the challenges …

Bostock: An Inevitable Guarantee Of Heightened Scrutiny For Sexual Orientation And Transgender Classifications, Kaleb Byars Jan 2022

Bostock: An Inevitable Guarantee Of Heightened Scrutiny For Sexual Orientation And Transgender Classifications, Kaleb Byars

Articles

n June 2020, the Supreme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County. In Bostock, the Court held that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and transgender status per se constitutes discrimination "because of sex" for purposes of Title VIL But Bostock inspires the question of whether its holding and reasoning apply in other contexts, including the Equal Protection Clause context. While the Supreme Court has held intermediate scrutiny applies to sex classifications analyzed under the Equal Protection Clause, the Court has yet to elucidate the level of scrutiny that applies to LGBTQ classifications. Meanwhile, state and federal courts …

Cancer immunotherapy has significantly improved patient survival. Yet, half of patients do not respond to immunotherapy. Gut microbiomes have been linked to clinical responsiveness of melanoma patients on immunotherapies; however, different taxa have been associated with response status with implicated taxa inconsistent between studies. We used a tumor-agnostic approach to find common gut microbiome features of response among immunotherapy patients with different advanced stage cancers. A combined meta-analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing data from our mixed tumor cohort and three published immunotherapy gut microbiome datasets from different melanoma patient cohorts found certain gut bacterial taxa correlated with immunotherapy response …

Parent-Prompted Dysregulation: Do Parents Serve As Cues For Dysregulation In Some Children?, Daniel Lee Jan 2022

Parent-Prompted Dysregulation: Do Parents Serve As Cues For Dysregulation In Some Children?, Daniel Lee

Pitzer Senior Theses

Children occasionally encounter dysregulation when interacting with their parents in relatively neutral or positive scenarios. Given that the cause of dysregulation is usually relational, meaning it is often cued by someone who is seen to have power or control over the person, children could be particularly susceptible to dysregulation in the presence of their parents. However, when examining the existing literature, there appeared to be a lack of research and knowledge concerning this topic, with much of the literature focusing on the effect of child stressors on parental dysregulation. As a result, the term parent-prompted dysregulation was developed to refer …

Parent Adherence To Psychological Evaluation Recommendations, Feinstein Jessica D'Amico Jan 2022

Parent Adherence To Psychological Evaluation Recommendations, Feinstein Jessica D'Amico

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A psychological evaluation is often the first step towards intervention for children displaying difficulties associated with ADHD symptoms. The degree to which impairment associated with ADHD can be diminished relies in part on the extent to which patients follow through on recommendations that are provided as part of the psychological evaluation. Currently, there is little research that examines adherence to psychological evaluation recommendations. Two pioneer studies (Dreyer et al., 2010; Mucka et al., 2017) have found support for barriers and level of parent stress in predicting non-adherence to assessment recommendations. The present study expands upon previous research by examining adherence …

Access To The General Education Curriculum For Students With Significant Cognitive Disabilities, Robin Thoma

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As changes in legislation impact the education of students with significant cognitive disabilities, teachers must determine how to provide access to the general education curriculum. This is a particular challenge because of the intense needs of these students. Research was needed to examine the materials and instructional strategies utilized to provide access and the setting in which access was provided. In addition, factors that impact access required investigation. This qualitative, phenomenological study included five high school intense intervention educators who had lived experiences of providing access to the general education curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Observation and interviews …

Chemoresistance In Breast Cancer: Acquisition, Microtubule-Associated Proteins, And Combinatorial Therapy, Keeley Cleghorn Jan 2022

Chemoresistance In Breast Cancer: Acquisition, Microtubule-Associated Proteins, And Combinatorial Therapy, Keeley Cleghorn

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer remains the most diagnosed cancer in American women with a projected 44,000 women that will succumb to advanced metastatic disease in the next calendar year. Advanced and recurrent breast cancers frequently exhibit clinical resistance to therapeutic interventions including many that exhibit resistance against multiple drugs or therapies and results in chemoresistance. Chemoresistance, a common cause of therapeutic failure, can be classified as either innate or acquired, both of which result in dramatically different results following therapeutic intervention. Work in our laboratory has emphasized evaluating acquired chemoresistance against the microtubule-stabilizing drug, paclitaxel, and has demonstrated the ability to generate …
