Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy To Latinx Youth Experiencing Deportation Stress: A Critical Literature Review And Culturally Congruent Application, Desiree Curcio
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Deportation policies from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have harmful effects on the mental health of immigrant families in the US. These effects can be experienced at multiple points such as living in fear of deportation, undergoing ICE raids, becoming detained, or being deported. The children that witness these experiences of deportation within their families are impacted substantially. Some of the psychological effects of having a parent deported or detained can include internalizing and externalizing problems, attention difficulties, emotional and behavioral changes, interpersonal conflict, and feeling like a burden. While the impacts of deportation on youth are highlighted in the …

Money Attitude And Spiritual Well-Being, Joe Pong
Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)
This study seeks to explore the relationship between money attitude and spiritual wellbeing amongst Chinese youths in Hong Kong. Cross-sectional data (N = 501) were obtained from 249 Chinese university students in 2021 and 252 Chinese university students in 2022, aged between 19–23 years old. The participants were instructed to answer the SpiritualWell-being Questionnaire (SWBQ) to measure their spiritual well-being in the personal-communal, environmental and transcendental domains. The respondents were then asked to complete the Money Attitude Scale (MAS) to assess their attitudes and beliefs regarding money in three dimensions: power-prestige, anxiety and distrust. Results show that a negative correlation …

In this study, probiotic bacteria as a new post-processing approach to reduce acrylamide (AA) was investigated. The AA reduction ability of selected Lactobacillus strains and Bifidobacterium strains was demonstrated in (a) AA chemical solutions; (b) food matrices (biscuits and chips) and (c) in vitro digestion. The findings showed tested bacteria exhibited AA reduction ability which was probiotic strain-, AA concentration-, probiotic concentration-, incubation time- and pH-dependent. L. acidophilus LA 45 and B. longum ATCC 15707 (109 CFU/mL) showed the highest AA reduction (86.85 and 88.85%, respectively) when exposed to 350 ng/mL AA solution for 8 h. The findings also demonstrated …

A central goal of introductory physics for the life sciences (IPLS) is to prepare students to use physics to model and analyze biological situations, a skill of increasing importance for their future studies and careers. Here we report our findings on life science students’ ability to carry out a sophisticated biological modeling task at the end of first-semester introductory physics. Some students were enrolled in a standard course (N = 34), and some in an IPLS course (N = 61); both courses were taught with active learning, used calculus, and included the same core physics concepts. Compared to …

Sequential Assembly Of 1-D And 2-D Origami Arrays, Nathan Shin
Sequential Assembly Of 1-D And 2-D Origami Arrays, Nathan Shin
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
DNA origami, invented by Paul Rothemund in 2006, provides many possible routes for the synthesis of complex macromolecular assemblies. This project involves the creation of 1-D and 2-D arrays of cross origami to support the development of DNA detection devices by providing precise platforms for these devices. The M13 plasmid is the most commonly used scaffold in DNA nanotechnology, limiting the size and complexity of an individual DNA origami construct. However, by creating larger assemblies, the dimensions can be multiplied. For example, by alternating two different types of cross origami, optical reporters can be separated by 200 nm, which is …
Mortality Risk Associated With Urban Land Use For Adult Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Adamanteus), Mya Wiles
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Snakes have been a traditionally under-represented organism in urban ecology, but they face similar, if not greater challenges in the face of growing urban sprawl. Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus adamanteus, EDBs) are under consideration for listing under the Endangered Species Act due to population declines resulting from historical human persecution and habitat loss. This study used radio-telemetry data from a long-term monitoring project of adult EDBs on a developed sea island in South Carolina, USA. I reclassified a National Land Cover Dataset to reflect relative mortality risk for snakes attempting to move through the landscape. High-risk cover types …
Socioeconomic Determinants Of Antibiotic Resistance, Kausar Jama
Socioeconomic Determinants Of Antibiotic Resistance, Kausar Jama
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Antibiotics were first developed to treat wounded soldiers and cases of pneumonia in World War II. By the 1940s, antibiotics became widely used to treat several infectious processes. It was not long after antibiotics were being used frequently by clinicians that resistant strains began to emerge. Today, antibiotic resistance is a growing global health concern seen in many parts of the world. There are many factors that contribute to the prevalence of antibiotic resistance.
Purpose: This paper aims to demonstrate how socioeconomic factors play a role in the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. The literature review …
The Impact Of Conventional And Expanded Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) On Juvenile Offending Outcomes, Jesma C. Revering
The Impact Of Conventional And Expanded Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) On Juvenile Offending Outcomes, Jesma C. Revering
Theses and Graduate Projects
Previous research has established a correlation between conventional adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and juvenile offending. However, the possible moderating effect expanded ACEs has on this relationship remains unclear. Using the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS), the study included 278 youth from juvenile correctional facilities in Minnesota to examine the impact of conventional ACEs on juvenile offending, the impact of expanded ACEs on juvenile offending, and the impact of conventional ACEs on juvenile offending, moderated by expanded ACEs. Findings revealed a statistically significant positive effect of conventional ACEs on juvenile offending. Expanded ACEs had a significant negative relationship with juvenile offending. …
