Commensality In The Cafeteria: How Eating With Others Relates To Well-Being, Social Capital, And Group Cohesion, Noah Opalsky
Commensality In The Cafeteria: How Eating With Others Relates To Well-Being, Social Capital, And Group Cohesion, Noah Opalsky
Theses & ETDs
Commensality or the act of eating with others has evolved broadly to better encapsulate the act of eating as a distinctly social phenomenon. Commensality can take on many forms and people can gather around a table for many reasons, but there is always a distinct aspect of spending time with others as a way to form, maintain, and strengthen the bonds between them and as a way to enjoy time with others increasing one’s happiness, gratitude, and overall well-being. Thus, a mixed methods study consisting of a survey and semi-structured interviews was conducted in order to better understand the ways …
Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts
Making Waves: Blackness And Transnational Racialized Self-Fashioning By South Korean Hip-Hop Artists, Gwen Roberts
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines a selection of songs by various mainstream Korean hip-hop artists to understand how they perform Blackness in a transnational context. This research employs a qualitative content analysis of song lyrics from twenty-four songs selected through both convenience and purposeful sampling. The songs examined are from thirty-nine hip-hop artists, both Korean and Korean-American/Canadian, who self-identified as Korean hip-hop artists. Along with supplemental theories, Marc D. Perry's "self-fashioning" (2008) and Geoff Harkness' "situational authenticity" (2012) are central theoretical frameworks in this thesis. The findings from the content analysis are organized into four themes: linguistics, culture/positionality, conventions, and class status. …
The Behavioral Response Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus Zimmerman 1780) To Scented Bait Stations, Nicholas Warmington
The Behavioral Response Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus Zimmerman 1780) To Scented Bait Stations, Nicholas Warmington
Theses & ETDs
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are large, herbivorous ungulates which are known to be selective browsers. They can heavily modify the botanical landscape of an area if their population size becomes too large. White-tailed deer populations are growing too fast, and overpopulation is becoming a serious issue across the United States. Deer will heavily browse saplings and herbs, causing issues with forest regeneration and the protection of endangered herbs. Overpopulation of deer has also become a major issue due to the rise of zoonoses and deer vehicle collisions due to development. In the present study, use of scents such as predator …
Overlapping Biopsychological Underpinnings And Brain Regions That Mediate Neurocognitive Processes Relevant To Entrepreneurship And Parenting, Aleah Colon Alfonso
Overlapping Biopsychological Underpinnings And Brain Regions That Mediate Neurocognitive Processes Relevant To Entrepreneurship And Parenting, Aleah Colon Alfonso
Theses & ETDs
Neuroentrepreneurship research findings have shown parallels between entrepreneurship and parenting that provide novel insights into the biological and neurocognitive underpinnings of entrepreneurial decision making - but only in fathers and male entrepreneurs. There is a distinct gap in the literature in regards to female entrepreneurs and whether or not the neural basis of entrepreneurship and parenting transcends sex. A literature review to explore and bridge the gap between existing neuroentrepreneurship research and previously observed sex differences in parenting is conducted. Results of previous studies suggest a neurocognitive overlap between parenting and entrepreneurship that stems from heightened emotionality and the brain’s …
Case Study Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis In A California Sea Lion: Diffusion Imaging Analysis Of Anterior Thalamus And Connectivity, Isabella Michal
Case Study Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis In A California Sea Lion: Diffusion Imaging Analysis Of Anterior Thalamus And Connectivity, Isabella Michal
Theses & ETDs
Populations of wild California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are an opportunistic disease model for study of the effects of the algal toxin domoic acid. Common symptomology of chronic domoic acid toxicosis in these animals includes hippocampal atrophy and seizures. Distributed neural pathology is less well understood. The thalamus shares dense connections with the hippocampus, and there has been some evidence of thalamus lesioning in exposed sea lions and human cases, but these findings have been anecdotal. Relatedly, temporal lobe epilepsy in humans can lead to thalamus atrophy. In the present study, high resolution diffusion tensor imaging data obtained postmortem was …
The Information Needed To Successfully Educate Florida Highschool Students On The Topic Of Artificial Coral Reefs, Eliot Greene
The Information Needed To Successfully Educate Florida Highschool Students On The Topic Of Artificial Coral Reefs, Eliot Greene
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of this thesis was to create a lesson plan that teaches the importance of artificial coral reefs to high school students. There are no lesson plans designed to teach about artificial coral reefs to high school students that are publicly available for educators to use. To write a lesson plan about artificial coral reefs an extensive amount of background research was done. This included general information about corals and how they are impacted by climate change, analyzing existing artificial coral reefs, understanding the process of doing an artificial reef project from scratch, and analyzing lesson plans designed to …
Forget About The Price Tag: Using Modern Monetary Theory To Fund America’S Social Programs, Kailey O'Shaughnessy
Forget About The Price Tag: Using Modern Monetary Theory To Fund America’S Social Programs, Kailey O'Shaughnessy
Theses & ETDs
Welfare expansion and reform is a topic that is subject to extensive research, though child welfare is largely overlooked in these papers. This paper examines child welfare reform and expansion through the lens of Modern Monetary Theory. Through examining the history of welfare, the evolution of child welfare, and the rise of neoliberalism this paper hopes to show where we came from and how we have gotten to the present welfare system. Through a case study on the child welfare system in the state of Florida, this paper recognizes flaws in the child welfare system and applies Modern Monetary Theory …
The Future Of Urban Agriculture: Community Gardening And Controlled Environment Agriculture, Bryton Calder
The Future Of Urban Agriculture: Community Gardening And Controlled Environment Agriculture, Bryton Calder
Theses & ETDs
Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating and harnessing agriculture within cities, in order to provide for the people who live there. Our urban populations are sustained from the produce of industrial agriculture, grown far from where it is needed most. As urban populations expand many communities are being left behind, deprived of access to healthy and fresh produce. Urban agriculture offers a way to bring food production back to these communities and change urban landscapes into conduits for their own livelihoods. The act of growing and processing food within communities was the foundation of urbanization, and although cities today …
Rotational Spectroscopy Of 2-Vinyloxirane, 2,2-Dimethyloxirane And 2-Chloroethanol, Andi Wright
Rotational Spectroscopy Of 2-Vinyloxirane, 2,2-Dimethyloxirane And 2-Chloroethanol, Andi Wright
Theses & ETDs
The rotational spectra of 2,2-dimethyloxirane and 2-chloroethanol from 8 to 26 GHz were obtained using a waveguide, chirped-pulse microwave spectrometer at room temperature, and the rotational spectrum of 2-vinyloxirane from 75 to 110 GHz was obtained by collaborators at BrightSpec using a BrightSpec Fourier Transform- Molecular Rotational Resonance (FT-MRR) Broadband Discovery Spectrometer. Each spectrum was examined to refine rotational and distortion constants for the ground state of the dominant conformer for each molecule. For 2-chloroethanol, the ground state of the dominant conformer for both isotopologues was examined. For all three molecules, additional transitions were assigned within the spectrum, improving upon …
Sex Differences In Greb1 Expression In Xenopus Laevis, Daria Paulis
Sex Differences In Greb1 Expression In Xenopus Laevis, Daria Paulis
Theses & ETDs
Transcriptomic studies are a great tool for trying to understand the molecular support mechanisms for behavior and physiology. This thesis builds on a previous transcriptomic study that was done in Xenopus (African clawed frogs). Xenopus use sex- and species-specific vocalizations to mediate reproduction. Differences in vocalizations are supported by the sexually dimorphic larynx, the muscle responsible for vocalizations. Work to understand Xenopus laryngeal physiology and morphology had found sex differences in the fiber type, size, and density. Our past transcriptomic study found greb1 (growth regulation by estrogen in breast cancer 1) to be differentially expressed between males and females in …

Lgbtq+ Taiwanese: Their History, Politics, And Films, Keilon Sabourin
Lgbtq+ Taiwanese: Their History, Politics, And Films, Keilon Sabourin
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the history, politics, and films of LGBTQ+ people in Taiwan with a focus on the political and cultural changes that led to Taiwan becoming the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. This thesis also explores the opposition to the LGBTQ+ movement and the representation of LGBTQ+ people in popular films. Over the course of this paper, it becomes clear that the development of LGBTQ+ identities was strongly influenced by migration and cultural imperialism. In modern times, globalization further developed queer identities and helped create the Taiwanese queer community that exists today. By examining the development of …
Dynamics Of Protein Synthesis With Autoregulation: A Computational Biology Approach, Christopher Ryzowicz
Dynamics Of Protein Synthesis With Autoregulation: A Computational Biology Approach, Christopher Ryzowicz
Theses & ETDs
To maintain cellular homeostasis, cells continuously respond to external stimuli by employing a variety of regulatory mechanisms that often involve up-regulation of some proteins. This study focuses on deterministic and stochastic modeling and analysis of dynamics of a hypothetical protein P with negative autoregulations in E.coli. It assumes that the input signal up-regulates the protein P , and P down-regulates its own production using 2 types of autoregulatory mechanisms. The mathematical models are differential equations that describe the dynamics of mRNA and protein P for 3 scenarios: (1)Simplistic model with no regulation, (2)Model with transcriptional autoregulation, and (3)Model with translational …
Health In Transition: Transgender Vulnerability And The Role Of Medical Institutions, Brandon Heil
Health In Transition: Transgender Vulnerability And The Role Of Medical Institutions, Brandon Heil
Theses & ETDs
The transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) population in the United States is growing, and currently faces unprecedented amounts of violence and discrimination. Discrimination harms mental and physical health and ultimately adds to the high rates of suicide and targeted violence of TGNC people. I investigate the contributions of medical discrimination, especially in considering both the specific health care needs of this population and the urgency of other TGNC issues. Utilizing clinical and psychological literature, national surveys, and resources from activists and non-profit organizations, I identify a model that describes TGNC vulnerability. I also suggest that the concept of minority stress is …
Gendered Culture In Undergraduate Education: Examing Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Student Experiences, Nicholas Pracko
Gendered Culture In Undergraduate Education: Examing Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Student Experiences, Nicholas Pracko
Theses & ETDs
Over the recent years, researchers have begun to document the experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming students’ experiences in higher education. However, little to no research has focused on the culture around gender at undergraduate institutions (including specific components of gendered culture) or the effect of gendered culture on academic motivation and self-acceptance. To address this research gap, this study examined the experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming students through a sample of New College of Florida students (N= 39) and a non-New College sample (N= 40) representing 22 undergraduate colleges in the United States. Participants completed items measuring their …
Empirical And Epistemic Justifications:A Comparative Assessment Of Mapping Validation Techniques For Evaluating Seagrass Abundance, Maria Guardado
Empirical And Epistemic Justifications:A Comparative Assessment Of Mapping Validation Techniques For Evaluating Seagrass Abundance, Maria Guardado
Theses & ETDs
Empirically, I perform three different mapping validation procedures (by eye, photo-quadrat, and point count) in order to compare their functionality as ground truth data. I calculate the benthic substrate coverage in a subset of the Sarasota Bay in Florida by using high resolution aerial images and perform accuracy assessments using the three validation procedures. Philosophically, I assess how the methodology of mapping validation procedures assumes a framework of scientific realism for practicing scientists, implying an absolutism about the truth in scientific claims. I then assess the procedures I used in the comparative study of mapping validation procedures through the epistemic …
Movement, Menstrual Cycle And Motivation: Understanding The Influence Of Ovarian Hormones And Motivation On Physical Activity Throughout The Menstrual Cycle, Phoenix Kadzis
Theses & ETDs
Studying the menstrual cycle has broad implications in advancing knowledge on women’s health and wellbeing. While much is known about the neuroendocrine system of hormones that influence the fluctuations of the menstrual cycle, there is little concrete evidence in understanding how behaviors are affected. This study explored relationships between menstrual cycle phases, physical activity levels and motivated physical effort. With the aid of Fitbit devices measuring physical activity, the measurement of ovarian hormones and behavioral tasks in the lab, this study aimed to gain an understanding of the relationship between menstrual cycle variations and physical activity levels throughout the menstrual …
A Generalization Of Polya’S Inequality For Torsional Rigidity And Principal Frequency Via The Theory Of Dirichlet Forms, Evan Hunter
Theses & ETDs
The first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplace operator is a well known geometric in- variant, as is the volume of a domain. In 1951 Polya and Szego proved an inequality relating these to torsional rigidity, a geometric invariant related to the Laplace op- erator which arises in the theory of elastic bodies. Via the theory of Dirichlet forms we extend the Polya and Szego result to a class of self-adjoint operators associated to stochastic processes.
About Us, No Longer Without Us: What A Disability Theory Lens Has To Offer The Cognitive Sciences, Mason Tedeschi
About Us, No Longer Without Us: What A Disability Theory Lens Has To Offer The Cognitive Sciences, Mason Tedeschi
Theses & ETDs
This thesis argues that producing knowledge about the brain and behavior can recognize variance in neutral terms rather than pathologizing ones. I begin by discussing the academic field of disability studies. Disability studies defines disability as separate from impairment, which describes the actual difference in body, brain, or behavior. I will then explain how redefining the way cognitive science looks at disabilities and intentionally moving away from the perspective of deficit doesn’t require the invention of new tools. Affordance theory, which discusses an emergent property between an environment and an individual that makes actions possible, has the potential to open …
Multiple Raspberry Picamera Recording And Video Stitching Software, Zachary Carey
Multiple Raspberry Picamera Recording And Video Stitching Software, Zachary Carey
Theses & ETDs
Most animal behavior experiments constrain the experimental design to a single camera, small terrestrial animal and small arena. Advancements in modern technology have allowed for new designs of animal behavior experiments to be created like the multiple Raspberry Picamera recording system generated for the Pritzker Marine Laboratory’s flume tank. This system pilots an experimental design allowing for multiple cameras to be used, and large aquatic animals in large arenas to be studied. This Picamera system produces a single panorama-like output of the entire enclosure by using cost-effective and open-source materials, making it cheaper than standardized alternatives.
Genome Sequence Analysis Of A Novel Sediment-Derived Marine Bacterium And Its Biosynthesis Of The Antimicrobial Molecules Prodigiosin And Cycloprodigiosin, Cara Ruhnke
Theses & ETDs
With the rise of antimicrobial resistant bacteria, the search for novel compounds exhibiting antimicrobial properties has become an important area of research. Antimicrobial secondary metabolites produced by novel species of bacteria provide a new avenue for drug innovation. A red pigment-producing bacteria with antimicrobial properties was isolated from marine sediment off the coast of St. Petersburg, Florida and named MI3. The genome of MI3 showed less than 78% identity to known bacterial species. Phylogenetic analysis based on the genome showed MI3 represents a new species of the genus Zooshikella. SEM imaging showed the bacteria to be spirillum shaped and forming …
Xenopus Muelleri Vocalizations And Their Social Contexts, Eliot Evans
Xenopus Muelleri Vocalizations And Their Social Contexts, Eliot Evans
Theses & ETDs
Anurans of the genus Xenopus provide us with an excellent model to study vocalization physiology and behavior. These frogs produce species and sex-specific vocalizations depending on their current social context. In this study, I look at the understudied species Xenopus muelleri in an attempt to elicit undiscovered vocalizations in this species as well as provide novel behavioral descriptions for each of their known vocalizations. To accomplish this, I primed male and female frogs with human chorionic gonadotropin to increase the likelihood of mating behaviors then paired males and females together both with and without a separation barrier. Temporal and behavioral …

Study Of Zyomogen Granule Movement Along Actin Filaments Using A Single Beam Optical Trap, Justin James Raupp
Study Of Zyomogen Granule Movement Along Actin Filaments Using A Single Beam Optical Trap, Justin James Raupp
Wayne State University Dissertations
Zymogen granules are enzymatic vesicles in the pancreas. The surface of these zymogen granules (ZGs) has several different kinds of myosin molecules, such as myosin 1c, 6, 5c, and 7b. These molecular motors may contribute to ZG transportation in cells. To understand the molecular motors involved in the vesicle trafficking, we observed the in vitro motility of purified ZGs from rat pancreas and examined the stepping behavior and force that is generated using a single beam optical trap. To be involved in trafficking, molecular motors have certain characteristics, a high duty ratio and the ability to move continuously along actin …
Dielectrophoretic Trapping Of Carbon Nanotubes For Temperature Sensing, Kaylee Burdette
Dielectrophoretic Trapping Of Carbon Nanotubes For Temperature Sensing, Kaylee Burdette
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Conventional sensors are rapidly approaching efficiency limitations at their current size. In designing more efficient sensors, low dimensional materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), quantum dots, and DNA origami can be used to enable higher degrees of sensitivity. Because of the high atomic surface to core ratio, these materials can be used to detect slight changes in chemical composition, strain, and temperature. CNTs offer unique advantages in different types of sensors due to their electromechanical properties. In temperature sensing, the high responsiveness to temperature and durability can be used to produce an accurate, reliable sensor in even extreme temperatures. This …

Fish Community Trends In The Greenup Pool, Ohio River, Nathaniel Kingsley Fleshman
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix), collectively referred to as Asian carps, are invasive species that may negatively affect native species through plankton resource exploitation mechanisms. Bighead and silver carp escaped into the Mississippi River basin in the early 1970s and have been steadily migrating upstream. The Greenup Pool lies upstream of the current known invasion of Asian carp in the Ohio River. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) has conducted probabilistic electrofishing community surveys in the Greenup Pool since 2006 on a five-year cycle. The objective of this study was …
