The Opioid Crisis: The Battle For Overdose Prevention Sites In Illinois, Haley Arnieri

DePaul Journal of Health Care Law

Opioid overdose deaths have been steadily increasing over the past thirty years. Since 1999, more than 841,000 people have died in the United States from a drug overdose. In 2018, two out of three drug overdose deaths were from opioids. Like the rest of the country, Illinois was not able to escape this public health crisis. Opioid overdoses are the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, but these deaths are preventable with the right resources. Some jurisdictions have started to look at new solutions to this public health crisis such as supervised injection site.

Hierarchy, Race & Gender In Legal Scholarly Networks, Keerthana Nunna, W. Nicholson Price Ii, Jonathan Tietz

Law & Economics Working Papers

A potent myth of legal academic scholarship is that it is mostly meritocratic and that it is mostly solitary. Reality is more complicated. In this Article, we plumb the networks of knowledge co-production in legal academia by analyzing the star footnotes that appear at the beginning of most law review articles. Acknowledgements paint a rich picture of both the currency of scholarly credit and the relationships among scholars. Building on others’ prior work characterizing the potent impact of hierarchy, race, and gender in legal academia more generally, we examine the patterns of scholarly networks and probe the effects of those …

Optimization Of A Smart Sensor Wearable Knee Sleeve For Measuring Skin Strain To Determine Joint Biomechanics, David Steven Wood Jan 2022

Optimization Of A Smart Sensor Wearable Knee Sleeve For Measuring Skin Strain To Determine Joint Biomechanics, David Steven Wood

Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses three objectives related to the design and modeling of an instrumented knee sleeve and its high deflection strain gauges for at-home knee rehabilitation. First, a multi-objective Bayesian approach was developed to economically optimize a high deflection strain gauge's mechanical and electrical behavior. Four objective functions were simultaneously optimized with two design variables in seven iterations; 90% faster than a grid search approach. The presented algorithm adjusts variables in the manufacturing process of high deflection strain gauges and produces a sensor with optimized properties for a predetermined purpose. Second, an algorithm was created to accurately approximate the dynamic …

Stabilizing The Interface Of All-Solid-State Electrolytes Against Cathode Electrodes By Atomic Layer Deposition, Ye Jin, Han Yu, Xiaoqing He, Xinhua Liang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, with the severe safety problems of organic electrolytes, all-solid-state electrolytes (ASSEs) have been considered as an appealing choice to replace organic electrolytes due to their high reliability and safety. However, the uncontrolled interfacial chemical reactions between electrodes and ASSEs would lead to high interfacial resistance, which is detrimental for the battery performance. In this work, LiFePO4 (LFP) particles were coated with ultra-thin ZrO2 films by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and the effects of thin film coating on the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries using the NASICON-type Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4) …

Evolution Of Static Allometry And Constraint On Evolutionary Allometry In A Fossil Stickleback, Kjetil L. Voje, Michael A. Bell, Yoel E. Stuart Jan 2022

Evolution Of Static Allometry And Constraint On Evolutionary Allometry In A Fossil Stickleback, Kjetil L. Voje, Michael A. Bell, Yoel E. Stuart

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Allometric scaling describes the relationship of trait size to body size within and among taxa. The slope of the population-level regression of trait size against body size (i.e. static allometry) is typically invariant among closely related populations and species. Such invariance is commonly interpreted to reflect a combination of developmental and selective constraints that delimit a phenotypic space into which evolution could proceed most easily. Thus, understanding how allometric relationships do eventually evolve is important to understanding phenotypic diversification. In a lineage of fossil Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus doryssus), we investigated the evolvability of static allometric slopes for nine traits (five …

Reassessing The Role Of Anthropogenic Climate Change In The Extinction Of Silphium, Paul Pollaro, Paul Robertson Jan 2022

Reassessing The Role Of Anthropogenic Climate Change In The Extinction Of Silphium, Paul Pollaro, Paul Robertson

Faculty Publications

The famed ancient herb, known to the Romans as silphium (Greeksilphion), is widely regarded as the first recorded instance of human-induced species extinction. Modern scholars have largely credited direct exploitation (e.g., over-harvesting; over-grazing) as the primary cause of silphium's extinction, due to an overwhelming demand for the plant in ancient times. Recent research has revealed strict cold-stratification requirements for the germination of silphium's closest living relatives, revealing the likelihood that silphium shared these same germination requirements. Documented environmental changes in ancient Cyrenaica (e.g., widespread deforestation; cropland expansion) likely resulted in accelerated rates of desertification throughout the region as well as …

Future Of Winter In Northeastern North America: Climate Indicators Portray Warming And Snow Loss That Will Impact Ecosystems And Communities, Elizabeth Burakowski, Alix Contosta, Danielle Grogan, Sarah Nelson, Sarah Garlick, Nora Casson

Faculty Publications

Winters in northeastern North America have warmed faster than summers, with impacts on ecosystems and society. Global climate models (GCMs) indicate that winters will continue to warm and lose snow in the future, but uncertainty remains regarding the magnitude of warming. Here, we project future trends in winter indicators under lower and higher climate-warming scenarios based on emission levels across northeastern North America at a fine spatial scale (1/16°) relevant to climate-related decision making. Under both climate scenarios, winters continue to warm with coincident increases in days above freezing, decreases in days with snow cover, and fewer nights below freezing. …

Selective Small Molecule Targeting Of Mcl-1 In Multiple Myeloma, Omar S. Al Odat Jan 2022

Selective Small Molecule Targeting Of Mcl-1 In Multiple Myeloma, Omar S. Al Odat

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a deadly blood malignancy, characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of aberrantly differentiated plasma cells. MM is challenging to diagnose and treat, accounting for approximately 12% of hematologic malignancies. The overexpression of anti-apoptotic group of Bcl-2 family proteins, particularly Myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl-1), play a critical role in the pathogenesis of MM. The overexpression of Mcl-1 is associated with drug resistance and overall poor prognosis. Thus, inhibition of the Mcl-1 protein is an attractive therapeutic strategy against myeloma cells. Over the last decade, the development of selective Mcl-1 inhibitors has seen remarkable advancement. In this project, …

Fibrogenesis And Adipogenesis In Farm Animals And Rodents, Chaoyang Li Jan 2022

Fibrogenesis And Adipogenesis In Farm Animals And Rodents, Chaoyang Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we aimed to provide additional insight into the mechanisms of fibrogenesis and adipogenesis based on different animal models to help the discovery of new treatments in cardiovascular disease, beef breeding strategies, and feed nutrition modifications.

Wayu, the Japanese Black cow, are well-known for their high IMF content, while the Brahman cattle have much less marbling. The development of IMF correlated with the increase in the size and number of IMF adipocytes, which have identified to be derived from a group of progenitor cells known as fibro/adipogenic progenitor (FAP) cells because of their bipotent differentiation ability. Interestingly, the …

Forest And Plantation Soil Microbiomes Differ In Their Capacity To Suppress Feedback Between Geosmithia Morbida And Rhizosphere Pathogens Of Juglans Nigra Seedlings, Geoffrey M. Williams, Matthew D. Ginzel Jan 2022

Forest And Plantation Soil Microbiomes Differ In Their Capacity To Suppress Feedback Between Geosmithia Morbida And Rhizosphere Pathogens Of Juglans Nigra Seedlings, Geoffrey M. Williams, Matthew D. Ginzel

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Thousand cankers disease (TCD) is hypothesized to have a greater impact on eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra) in urban forests and plantations compared with natural forest stands. Along with other factors such as resource availability, the phytobiome could partly account for observed differences in disease severity across management regimes. We investigated the extent to which J. nigra-associated soil microbiomes from plantations and natural forests modulate (i) the amount of necrosis caused by Geosmithia morbida in 1-year-old seedlings, and (ii) relative abundance of rhizosphere endophytes and opportunistic pathogens Fusarium and Rhizoctonia in response to aboveground inoculation with G. morbida. Our results …

Resolving The Three-Dimensional Rotational And Translational Dynamics Of Single Molecules Using Radially And Azimuthally Polarized Fluorescence, Oumeng Zhang, Weiyan Zhou, Jin Lu, Tingting Wu, Matthew D. Lew Jan 2022

Resolving The Three-Dimensional Rotational And Translational Dynamics Of Single Molecules Using Radially And Azimuthally Polarized Fluorescence, Oumeng Zhang, Weiyan Zhou, Jin Lu, Tingting Wu, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

We report a radially and azimuthally polarized (raPol) microscope for high detection and estimation performance in single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM). With 5000 photons detected from Nile red (NR) transiently bound within supported lipid bilayers (SLBs), raPol SMOLM achieves 2.9 nm localization precision, 1.5° orientation precision, and 0.17 sr precision in estimating rotational wobble. Within DPPC SLBs, SMOLM imaging reveals the existence of randomly oriented binding pockets that prevent NR from freely exploring all orientations. Treating the SLBs with cholesterol-loaded methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD-chol) causes NR’s orientational diffusion to be dramatically reduced, but curiously NR’s median lateral displacements drastically increase from 20.8 to …

Igyártó

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Nucleoside modified mRNA combined with Acuitas Therapeutics' lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) has been shown to support robust humoral immune responses in many preclinical animal vaccine studies and later in humans with the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We recently showed that this platform is highly inflammatory due to the LNPs' ionizable lipid component. The inflammatory property is key to support the development of potent humoral immune responses. However, the mechanism by which this platform drives T follicular helper (Tfh) cells and humoral immune responses remains unknown. Here we show that lack of Langerhans cells or cDC1s neither significantly affected the induction of PR8 HA …

Mass Incarceration, Covid-19, And Race As Exposure To Early Death, Traci Schlesinger Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

A majority of the largest, single-site outbreaks of COVID-19 infections in the United States have been in prisons and jails since the beginning of the pandemic. These outbreaks threaten the lives and well-being of incarcerated people, correctional staff, and people who live in the communities to which incarcerated people return. This study employs both linear and logistic multivariate regression models to examine data from the UCLA’s COVID Prison Data Project, IPUMS CPS, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Prison Policy Initiative to better understand the facility, county, and state-level predictors of COVID-19 infections and deaths in correctional facilities. …

The Rubber Hand Illusion: Top-Down Attention Modulates Embodiment, Rémi Thériault, Mathieu Landry, Amir Raz Jan 2022

The Rubber Hand Illusion: Top-Down Attention Modulates Embodiment, Rémi Thériault, Mathieu Landry, Amir Raz

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

The Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) creates distortions of body ownership through multimodal integration of somatosensory and visual inputs. This illusion largely rests on bottom-up (automatic multisensory and perceptual integration) mechanisms. However, the relative contribution from top-down factors, such as controlled processes involving attentional regulation, remains unclear. Following previous work that highlights the putative influence of higher-order cognition in the RHI, we aimed to further examine how modulations of working memory load and task instructions—two conditions engaging top-down cognitive processes—influence the experience of the RHI, as indexed by a number of psychometric dimensions. Relying on exploratory factor analysis for assessing this …

Neutralizing Interleukin-6 In Tumor-Bearing Mice Does Not Abrogate Behavioral Fatigue Induced By Lewis Lung Carcinoma, Kiersten Scott, Thien Trong Phan, A Phillip West, Cullen M Taniguchi, Robert Dantzer Jan 2022

Neutralizing Interleukin-6 In Tumor-Bearing Mice Does Not Abrogate Behavioral Fatigue Induced By Lewis Lung Carcinoma, Kiersten Scott, Thien Trong Phan, A Phillip West, Cullen M Taniguchi, Robert Dantzer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Tumor growth is associated with metabolic reprogramming of various organs including the liver. This metabolic reprogramming is responsible for the development of behavioral fatigue represented by decreased voluntary wheel running in a murine model of lung cancer. To determine whether interleukin (IL-)6 induced by the tumor is responsible for the metabolic reprogramming, mice injected with Lewis lung carcinoma cells in the flank were treated with an anti-mouse IL-6 monoclonal neutralizing antibody using a 2 × 2 factorial design (+/- tumor and +/- anti-IL-6 antibody). Endpoints were represented by behavioral, metabolic and immune phenotypes. Despite its ability to abrogate the increase …

Bicyclic Azetidines Target Acute And Chronic Stages Of Toxoplasma Gondii By Inhibiting Parasite Phenylalanyl T-Rna Synthetase, Joshua B Radke, Bruno Melillo, Payal Mittal, Manmohan Sharma, Amit Sharma, Yong Fu, Taher Uddin, Arthur Gonse, Eamon Comer, Stuart L Schreiber, Anil K Gupta, Arnab K Chatterjee, L David Sibley

Open Access Publications

Toxoplasma gondii commonly infects humans and while most infections are controlled by the immune response, currently approved drugs are not capable of clearing chronic infection in humans. Hence, approximately one third of the world's human population is at risk of reactivation, potentially leading to severe sequelae. To identify new candidates for treating chronic infection, we investigated a series of compounds derived from diversity-oriented synthesis. Bicyclic azetidines are potent low nanomolar inhibitors of phenylalanine tRNA synthetase (PheRS) in T. gondii, with excellent selectivity. Biochemical and genetic studies validate PheRS as the primary target of bicyclic azetidines in T. gondii, providing a …

Neuronal Population Activity Dynamics Reveal A Low-Dimensional Signature Of Operant Learning In Aplysia, Renan M Costa, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne Jan 2022

Neuronal Population Activity Dynamics Reveal A Low-Dimensional Signature Of Operant Learning In Aplysia, Renan M Costa, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Learning engages a high-dimensional neuronal population space spanning multiple brain regions. However, it remains unknown whether it is possible to identify a low-dimensional signature associated with operant conditioning, a ubiquitous form of learning in which animals learn from the consequences of behavior. Using single-neuron resolution voltage imaging, here we identify two low-dimensional motor modules in the neuronal population underlying Aplysia feeding. Our findings point to a temporal shift in module recruitment as the primary signature of operant learning. Our findings can help guide characterization of learning signatures in systems in which only a smaller fraction of the relevant neuronal population …
