Differentiation Of The Body Composition In The Polish National Team Pentathletes, Wladyslaw Jagiello, Roman M. Kalina, Marina Jagiello
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Contemporary anthropological research confirms the fact that body composition is one of the elements differentiating athletes from persons not practising sport systematically. The differences in body composition – in many cases even extreme – also regard athletes in the context of the sports discipline they practise. The aim of the study was to determine the properties of body composition of the Polish national team pentathletes in comparison to persons of the same population not practising competitive sport. Material/Methods: The research comprised members of the Polish national team in modern pentathlon (n=10). The subjects were 18-23 (20±1.5) years of age …
Body Mass Index In Female First-Year Students Of Full-Time Studies At The Academy Of Physical Education And Sport In Gdansk: Reality, Self-Evaluation, Dreams, Ewa Wojtowicz
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: An image on one’s body is an important component of one’s mental welfare. Scientific reports suggest that girls and women have a tendency to evaluate themselves through the prism of physical appearance and gender expectations influenced by cultural and unrealistic standards of beauty (slim, very lean, boy-like silhouette). The purpose of this study was to find out the opinions of young, healthy and physically active women about their bodies (BMI self-evaluation) and the ones connected with their dreams (the most satisfactory BMI) and reality (anthropometric measurements). Materials and methods: The statistical analysis of the data was based on anthropometric …

The Diagnostic Value Of Attributes From An Optimum Set Of Variables For Explaining An Outcome In Powerlifting At The Junior Level, Lukasz Plociennik, Igor Rygula, Tomasz Dancewicz, Krzysztof Łukaszuk
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
The sport of powerlifting has been extensively studied, but there is lack of information on an optimum list of features that explain performance in 19–20-years-old contestants. Therefore, the study aimed at two research objectives: (1) to determine a minimum set of attributes contributing the most information to an outcome; (2) to develop a biometric model describing the sport result. The study group (n = 30) consisted of athletes (aged 19.38 ±0.84) competing in powerlifting. Two methods for collecting information were used: observation and a diagnostic survey. Analytical methods comprised the multiple regression and Hellwig’s method. An analysis revealed that the …

The Science Behind The Integrity Of Single-Use System: Investigating Liquid Leak And Microbial Ingress Mechanisms To Determine The Maximum Allowable Leakage Limit, Nathalie Pathier, Marc Hogreve, Anilkumar Paramathma, Tomasz Urbania, Marie-Christine Menier
Single-Use Technologies V: Building The Future
As single-use systems (SUS) are increasingly expanding into all process steps of commercial manufacturing, integrity failure can significantly impact drug safety, availability, and costs. Consequently, growing industry scrutiny of single-use system integrity (SUSI) is raising the need to develop good science behind reliable determination of liquid leakage and microbial ingress, as well as the appropriate physical integrity testing technologies. In the current study, the results of the experiments performed at Sartorius to understand the mechanisms of liquid leakage and microbial ingress as the foundation for SUSI are presented. This study establishes that there is a relation between liquid leakage and …

Single-Use Technologies V: Building The Future
The sales of biologics will reach over $300 billion in 2020 and the market continues to have accelerated double-digit growth under the COVID-19 burden, thus biopharmaceutical companies continue to pipeline biologics for a mounting global patient base. Nevertheless, biologics are changing and the needs of their manufacturing are changing with them. Emerging biologics (e.g., antibody–drug conjugates, viral vectors, mRNA, bi/multi-specifics) are coming with complex or lean manufacturing requirements. Additionally, the global market is searching for more affordable & sustainable biologics and biosimilars, creating an increasingly competitive space within the emerging countries who seek to manufacture locally.

The protonation of meso-Tetra(2,3,4-trifluoromethylphenyl) porphyrin (TF) and meso-Tetra(pentafluorophenyl) porphyrin (PF) will be studied through UV vis spectroscopy. Protonation is achieved by titration of each porphyrin in toluene with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The presence of a wavelength shift from the free base Soret to the protonated Soret will indicate the formation of a dication. The data from the UV spectra will be used to calculate the pKa values associated with each porphyrin. Based on the results, the average pKa for TF upon protonation was 2.07, while the average pKa for PF was 1.36 over four trials. A greater acidic value for …

Qualitative Analysis Of Older Adults' Experiences With Sepsis, Rebecca D. Hancock
Qualitative Analysis Of Older Adults' Experiences With Sepsis, Rebecca D. Hancock
Dissertations
Atypical symptoms, multiple co-morbidities and a lack of public awareness make it difficult for older adults to know when to seek help for sepsis. Diagnosis delays contribute to older adults' higher sepsis mortality rates. This research describes patients' and caregivers' experiences with the symptom appraisal process, self-management strategies, provider-nurse-patient interactions, and barriers when seeking sepsis care.

Spherical Nucleic Acids As Precision Therapeutics For The Treatment Of Cancer—From Bench To Bedside, Akanksha S Mahajan, Alexander H Stegh
Spherical Nucleic Acids As Precision Therapeutics For The Treatment Of Cancer—From Bench To Bedside, Akanksha S Mahajan, Alexander H Stegh
Open Access Publications
Spherical Nucleic Acids (SNAs) emerged as a new class of nanotherapeutics consisting of a nanoparticle core densely functionalized with a shell of radially oriented synthetic oligonucleotides. The unique three-dimensional architecture of SNAs protects the oligonucleotides from nuclease-mediated degradation, increases oligonucleotide bioavailability, and in the absence of auxiliary transfection agents, enables robust uptake into tumor and immune cells through polyvalent association with cell surface pattern recognition receptors. When composed of gene-regulatory small interfering (si)RNA or immunostimulatory DNA or RNA oligonucleotides, SNAs silence gene expression and induce immune responses superior to those raised by the oligonucleotides in their "free" form. Early phase …

Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans

We propose that accountability plays an implicit, important, and relatively unexamined role in psychiatry. People generally think of accountability as a relation in which one party is held accountable by another. In this paper, we examine accountability as a virtue, drawing on philosophy, psychiatry, and psychology to examine what it means to welcome being accountable in an excellent way that promotes flourishing. When people manifest accountability as a virtue, they are both responsive to others they owe a response, and they are responsible for their attitudes and actions in light of these relationships. Psychiatric treatment often aims to correct disordered …

Christina Miller invites further clarification about the relationship between accountability and autonomy. Whereas embracing accountability to others for one’s responsibilities in those relationships emphasizes relationality, autonomy accents the individual’s own capacities to exhibit agency in enacting one’s decisions (which may or may not relate to other people). Accordingly, we theorize that relational capacities for empathic concern and perspective-taking are especially important in the virtue of accountability (and other relational virtues such as gratitude and forgivingness). The capacity for self-regulation may serve both one’s autonomous pursuits and accountability for carrying out one’s responsibilities within relationships, especially when enacting modifications in order …

The success of osseointegration depends on many factors. With temperatures beyond a 47 °C threshold over 1 min, bone survival may be impaired. The purpose of the study was to evaluate, in fresh human cadaver tibiae, the temperature changes during osteotomy preparations using two straight and two tapered implant systems' drills, external irrigation, and varying revolutions per minute (RPM). The tibiae from a fresh female cadaver were harvested bilaterally. Two tapered and two straight design drills were assessed. Two-hundred and forty osteotomies were prepared at 6 mm depth following the drill sequence of the manufacturers' protocol for each drilling speed. …

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are known contributors to breast cancer development. EDC exposures commonly occur through food packaging, cookware, fabrics, and personal care products as well as through the environment. Increasing evidence highlights disparities in EDC exposure across racial/ethnic groups, yet breast cancer research continues to lack the inclusion necessary to positively impact treatment response and overall survival in these socially disadvantaged populations. Additionally, the inequity in environmental exposures has yet to be remedied. Exposure to EDCs due to structural racism poses an unequivocal risk to marginalized communities. In this review, we summarize recent epidemiological and molecular studies on two lesser-studied …

Along the Gulf of Alaska, rapid glacier retreat has driven changes in transport of freshwater, sediments, and nutrients to estuary habitats. Over the coming decades, deglaciation will lead to a temporary increase, followed by a long-term decline of glacial influence on estuaries. Therefore, quantifying the current variability in estuarine fish community structure in regions predicted to be most affected by glacier loss is necessary to anticipate future impacts. We analyzed fish community data collected monthly (April through September) over 7 years (2013–2019) from glacially influenced estuaries along the southeastern Gulf of Alaska. River delta sites within estuaries were sampled along …

From Distinct To Differential Conformational Dynamics To Map Allosteric Communication Pathways In Proteins, Xin-Qiu Joe Yao, Donald Hamelberg
From Distinct To Differential Conformational Dynamics To Map Allosteric Communication Pathways In Proteins, Xin-Qiu Joe Yao, Donald Hamelberg
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Initiation of biological processes involving protein–ligand binding, transient protein–protein interactions, or amino acid modifications alters the conformational dynamics of proteins. Accompanying these biological processes are ensuing coupled atomic level conformational changes within the proteins. These conformational changes collectively connect multiple amino acid residues at distal allosteric, binding, and/or active sites. Local changes due to, for example, binding of a regulatory ligand at an allosteric site initiate the allosteric regulation. The allosteric signal propagates throughout the protein structure, causing changes at distal sites, activating, deactivating, or modifying the function of the protein. Hence, dynamical responses within protein structures to stimuli contain …

The interest in and enthusiasm for shifting food systems to community-based and local trajectories have increased exponentially over the past decade. Part of the appeal of community-based, local food systems is their potential to secure access to healthy food for local communities, expand sustainable farming practices, promote local food economies, and advance environmental and food justice. Interactions and collaborations within the spectrum of the food system’s stakeholders—from farmers to local officials and organizations to local businesses and residents—are the cornerstone for effective food systems tailored to their community’s needs. An increasing number of food system studies have applied stakeholder assessment …

The pivot to remote and hybrid learning during the Covid-19 pandemic presented a challenge for many in academia. Most institutions were not prepared to support this rapid change, and instructors were left with the burden of converting a traditional face-to-face course into multiple modalities with very limited preparation time. When institutional support is lacking, we posit that instructor communities of practice can help provide the resources needed to meet the instructional demands. Tiny Earth, a course-based-undergraduate research experience (CURE) and international network of instructors and students, responded to the instructional challenges of the pandemic by leveraging its large community of …

Mammalian captive dietary specialists like folivores are prone to gastrointestinal distress and primate dietary specialists suffer the greatest gut microbiome diversity losses in captivity compared to the wild. Marmosets represent another group of dietary specialists, exudivores that eat plant exudates, but whose microbiome remains relatively less studied. The common occurrence of gastrointestinal distress in captive marmosets prompted us to study the Callithrix gut microbiome composition and predictive function through bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA V4 region sequencing. We sampled 59 wild and captive Callithrix across four species and their hybrids. Host environment had a stronger effect on the gut microbiome than …

Exploring Magneto-Excitons In Bulk And Mono-Layer Semiconductors Using Non-Linear Spectroscopy Techniques, Varun Mapara
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The research in two-dimensional (2D) materials has evolved from ``traditional" quantum wells based on group III-V and II-VI semiconductors to atomically thin sheets of van der Waals materials such as 2D semiconducting Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). These 2D materials remain a stimulating field that continues to introduce new challenges. From both a fundamental physics and technological perspective, magneto-optical spectroscopy has been an essential tool in this research field. TMDs, for example, pose the challenge of characterizing their spin-valley-resolved physics and deriving implications in quantum computation and information research. With the discovery of valley Zeeman effects, the spin-valley physics of TMDs …
