Southeast Asia is a major rice-producing region with a high level of internal consumption and accounting for 40% of global rice exports. Limited land resources, climate change and yield stagnation during recent years have once again raised concerns about the capacity of the region to remain as a large net exporter. Here we use a modelling approach to map rice yield gaps and assess production potential and net exports by 2040. We find that the average yield gap represents 48% of the yield potential estimate for the region, but there are substantial differences among countries. Exploitable yield gaps are relatively …

Measuring Optical Water Quality Parameters Using An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ( Uav )-Based Multispectral Sensor, Lake Bloomington And Evergreen Lake, Jerome Michael Komas Mar 2022

Measuring Optical Water Quality Parameters Using An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ( Uav )-Based Multispectral Sensor, Lake Bloomington And Evergreen Lake, Jerome Michael Komas

Theses and Dissertations

Surface drinking water infrastructure is an integral part of the development and sustainability of societies around the world. However, these surface freshwater resources have been a challenge to monitor due to the vast number of in-situ samples needed to accurately quantify constituents, expenses of equipment, coordination of personnel, and laboratory costs. Lake Bloomington and Evergreen Lake (Hudson, Illinois) are two vital surface water features that serve as the drinking water reservoirs for the Bloomington, IL. Both reservoirs are within agricultural watersheds, with watershed inputs typically being high in turbidity and nitrate.

We utilized an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) coupled with …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a prevalent complication after extremely preterm birth. Inflammation with mechanical ventilation may contribute to its development. Whether hydrocortisone treatment after the second postnatal week can improve survival without bronchopulmonary dysplasia and without adverse neurodevelopmental effects is unknown.

METHODS: We conducted a trial involving infants who had a gestational age of less than 30 weeks and who had been intubated for at least 7 days at 14 to 28 days. Infants were randomly assigned to receive either hydrocortisone (4 mg per kilogram of body weight per day tapered over a period of 10 days) or placebo. Mandatory …

The Overfished Pacific Bluefin Tuna: The Tragedy Of A Highly Migratory Fish Species, Theresa Geib Mar 2022

The Overfished Pacific Bluefin Tuna: The Tragedy Of A Highly Migratory Fish Species, Theresa Geib

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

The ocean is an abundant resource; however, overutilization is becoming an increasing threat to biodiversity. Approximately 90% of the ocean’s fisheries are overexploited, fully exploited, or have collapsed entirely. The issue of overfishing arose in the mid-1900s after the industrialization of the fishing industry. Once dominated by local fishermen, the industry now features commercial fleets with the technology to locate, extract, and process large numbers of specific fish species. An early 2000s study reported that only 10% of large ocean fish remained after years of industrial fishing, including the highly migratory Pacific Bluefin Tuna (“PBT”).

In 2016, the PBT …

Sdlp After 20: Sustainable Development In The Anthropocene, David Hunter

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

This volume marks the 20th anniversary of Sustainable Development Law and Policy (SDLP) published by the students of American University’s Washington College of Law. SDLP was founded to explore the legal and policy dimensions of sustainable development (i.e. the simultaneous pursuit, or integration, of economic development, environmental protection, and social welfare). During its twenty years, SDLP has provided a forum for scholars, practitioners, and students to analyze the complex challenges to achieving economic and social justice within the constraints of our planet’s natural environment. From its first volume addressing liability for carbon trading, the regulation of genetically modified organisms, and …

Underserved Communities Trashed By Plastic: Slowing The Proliferation Of Petroleum Based Products Through Stewardship Laws And Enhanced Back-End Regulatory Solutions, Joan F. Chu

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

Plastic pollution has attracted a tremendous amount of attention and press coverage in early 2021 as evidenced in news stories; an episode of John Oliver’s show, “Last Week Tonight”; and a viral tweet from Greta Thunberg highlighting a study linking plastic pollution to human penises shrinking. These eye-catching pieces stemmed from Dr. Shanna H. Swan’s work that culminated in her book, Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race. Other articles have highlighted plastic pollution’s impact on polar bears, which causes their penis …

Bison, Tribes, And Brucellosis In The Interagency Bison Management Plan, Bailey Nickoloff Mar 2022

Bison, Tribes, And Brucellosis In The Interagency Bison Management Plan, Bailey Nickoloff

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Introduction

It would be in the best interest of the Interagency Bison Management Plan (“IBMP”) and its affiliated agencies to allow Tribal governments and Tribal members to hunt bison within Yellowstone National Park (“YNP”). This would help to reduce the spread of brucellosis, reduce the environmental impacts from bison in YNP, and honor the treaties signed between the United States and Tribal governments. These agencies can accomplish this by implementing treaty hunting rights in a new Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”) and within an existing legal framework.

Autism And Identity: Standing At The Axis Of Oppression, Samantha Chipman Mar 2022

Autism And Identity: Standing At The Axis Of Oppression, Samantha Chipman

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The ratio of males to females diagnosed with autism is three to one. Medically defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder, common traits of individuals with autism include difficulty in social functioning, communication, and sensory processing. Autism has been conceptualized as a diagnosis that upholds gendered assumptions of only impacting men and boys. I argue that Feminist Standpoint Theory (FST) is an epistemic resource to better understand women and girls with autism. Epistemic injustice and FST uncovers distortions in peoples’ knowledge of autism, which contributes to its construction as a social form of identity.
