Development Of A Pilot Educational Seminar For The Integrative Medical Management Of Adults With Anxiety, Jessica Lynn Fynboh Dec 2022

Development Of A Pilot Educational Seminar For The Integrative Medical Management Of Adults With Anxiety, Jessica Lynn Fynboh

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Anxiety is a global disease that continues to rise. The COVID 19 global pandemic, natural disasters due to climate change, war, and personal stressors continue to cause the steady rise in anxiety worldwide. As many as 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety. A review of standard anxiety treatments including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac, benzodiazepines such as Xanax, and cognitive behavioral therapy revealed they only provided relief for approximately half of the patients treated. Over the past two years, provider colleagues and their clients in an outpatient private practice where this educational seminar took place had been increasingly …

Forensic Linguistics: Science Or Fiction?, Abigail Shim Dec 2022

Forensic Linguistics: Science Or Fiction?, Abigail Shim

UC Law Journal

The history of linguistics is meager and splintered due to the subject’s interdisciplinary nature. In the postwar era, the discipline attempted to revive as a scientific one, spearheaded by Noam Chomsky and his theory of generative grammar. Linguistics consequently broke away from the predominant structuralist approach of the nineteenth century, returning to rationalist roots. But with the rise of computer technology, Chomsky’s critiques of empirical, applicational linguistic approaches have lost their force. As academic linguistics splinters off again, loses its scientific edge, and regroups with the humanities, linguistics applied in the forensic context may implicate more questions than it answers, …

Bayesian Models For Spatially Explicit Interactions Between Neighbouring Plants, Cristina Barber, Andrii Zaiats, Cara Applestein, Lisa Rosenthal, T. Trevor Caughlin Dec 2022

Bayesian Models For Spatially Explicit Interactions Between Neighbouring Plants, Cristina Barber, Andrii Zaiats, Cara Applestein, Lisa Rosenthal, T. Trevor Caughlin

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

  1. Interactions between neighbouring plants drive population and community dynamics in terrestrial ecosystems. Understanding these interactions is critical for both fundamental and applied ecology. Spatial approaches to model neighbour interactions are necessary, as interaction strength depends on the distance between neighbouring plants. Recent Bayesian advancements, including the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm, offer the flexibility and speed to fit models of spatially explicit neighbour interactions. We present a guide for parameterizing these models in the Stan programming language and demonstrate how Bayesian computation can assist ecological inference on plant–plant interactions.

  2. Modelling plant neighbour interactions presents several challenges for ecological modelling. First, nonlinear …

An atomic force microscope (AFM) fundamentally measures the interaction between a nanoscale AFM probe tip and the sample surface. If the force applied by the probe tip and its contact area with the sample can be quantified, it is possible to determine the nanoscale mechanical properties (e.g., elastic or Young's modulus) of the surface being probed. A detailed procedure for performing quantitative AFM cantilever-based nanoindentation experiments is provided here, with representative examples of how the technique can be applied to determine the elastic moduli of a wide variety of sample types, ranging from kPa to GPa. These include live mesenchymal …

Open Access Publications

Many U.S. medical schools conduct holistic review of applicants to enhance the socioeconomic and experiential diversity of the physician workforce. The authors examined the role of first-generation college-graduate status on U.S. medical school application, acceptance, and matriculation, hypothesizing that first-generation (vs. continuing-generation) college graduates would be less likely to apply and gain acceptance to medical school.Secondary analysis of de-identified data from a retrospective national-cohort study was conducted for individuals who completed the 2001-2006 Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Pre-Medical College Admission Test Questionnaire (PMQ) and the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). AAMC provided medical school application, acceptance, and matriculation …

Eco-Dystopian Novels Written By Women: Second, Third, And Fourth Wave Feminism, Trystyn Cox

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The project is thematic; analysis of eco-dystopian novels written by American female authors in the 20th and 21st centuries in order to determine if the different waves of feminism experienced in the United States had any influence over the books. By doing an analysis of eco-dystopian novels the study identifies if there were any outside societal movements or issues going on at the time that may have influenced how the book was created or if a particular book was able to open innovative ideas to the society at the time it was published. I researched the second, third, and fourth …

Indoctrination By Elimination: Why Banning Critical Race Theory In Public Schools Is Unconstitutional, Emma Postel Dec 2022

Indoctrination By Elimination: Why Banning Critical Race Theory In Public Schools Is Unconstitutional, Emma Postel

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This Note argues that Texas public school students’ First Amendment Rights have been violated by the passage of Senate Bill 3 (SB 3), which bans the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in K–12 public schools. The First Amendment is violated here because (1) students have a First Amendment right to speech, and this law bans protected speech; (2) students have a right to receive information, and this ban prevents them from receiving information; and (3) schools are meant to be the marketplace of ideas for students and banning CRT amounts to unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. This Note does not suggest …

Debiasing Criminal Justice, Sandra Guerra Thompson, Nicole Bremner Cásarez Dec 2022

Debiasing Criminal Justice, Sandra Guerra Thompson, Nicole Bremner Cásarez

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minnesota inspired a summer of protests in 2020, followed by a call for racial reckoning and a professed commitment to reform criminal justice. Many have condemned the “systemic racism” reflected in countless demographic measures. From killings of unarmed men by the police at the front end of the criminal justice system to incarceration rates at the back end, the statistics show stark disparities along racial lines. These disparities are held up as evidence of racial bias in the system.

Statements about racial bias may be intended as an indictment of a …

Perceived Efficacy, Reduced Prescription Drug Use, And Minimal Side Effects Of Cannabis In Patients With Chronic Orthopedic Pain, Ari Greis, Eric Larsen, Conan Liu, Bryan Renslo, Anjithaa Radakrishnan, Adrianne R Wilson-Poe Dec 2022

Perceived Efficacy, Reduced Prescription Drug Use, And Minimal Side Effects Of Cannabis In Patients With Chronic Orthopedic Pain, Ari Greis, Eric Larsen, Conan Liu, Bryan Renslo, Anjithaa Radakrishnan, Adrianne R Wilson-Poe

Rothman Institute Papers

Introduction: Although cannabis is widely used for the treatment of chronic pain, most research relies on patient self-report and few studies have objectively quantified its efficacy and side effects. Extant inventories for measuring cannabis use were not designed to capture the medically relevant features of cannabis use, but rather were designed to detect problematic use or cannabis use disorder. Thus, we sought to capture the medically relevant features of cannabis use in a population of patients with orthopedic pain and pair these data with objective measures of pain and prescription drug use. Materials and Methods: In this prospective observational study, …

Influence Of The Virgin Mary In Anglo-Saxon Christianity, Kimberly Merfert Dec 2022

Influence Of The Virgin Mary In Anglo-Saxon Christianity, Kimberly Merfert

Honors Theses

Though it remains unclear when Christianity was first introduced to England, it is certain Christianity was established by the early third century. It was not until the beginning of the seventh century, however, that Christianity flourished in Anglo-Saxon England, bringing with it a new understanding of the feminine role. Once enthralled by the coming of Jesus Christ, worshippers of the Virgin Mary idealized the Mother of God as the realization of the ideals of purity, humility, and passivity. They defined Saint Mary by her sinlessness, valuing her unbreakable virginity as a symbol of unparalleled strength, responsibility, and holiness. Mary herself …

Understanding The Molecular Mechanism Of Ilv1 Stress Sensitivity In Yeast By Examination Of Differential Patterns Of Gene Expression Between Wild-Type And Ilv1 Knockout Strains Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Emily Schuster Dec 2022

Understanding The Molecular Mechanism Of Ilv1 Stress Sensitivity In Yeast By Examination Of Differential Patterns Of Gene Expression Between Wild-Type And Ilv1 Knockout Strains Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Emily Schuster

Honors Theses

As arguably the most widely used industrial eukaryote, Saccharomyces cerevisiae has become one of the many model organisms used to study molecular genetics. A recent unpublished study at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga showed that yeast cells that had the ILV1 gene knocked out had reduced survivability under stress conditions. This study then focused on the role of ILV1 in the stress response of cells by measuring the expression levels of 11 candidate genes that are all involved in some critical pathway in the yeast to see how gene expression was influenced as a result of the loss of …

Fiber-Based Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting As A Method For Investigating Metabolism During Tetanic Contraction Of Skeletal Muscle, Kathryn Miller Priest Dec 2022

Fiber-Based Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting As A Method For Investigating Metabolism During Tetanic Contraction Of Skeletal Muscle, Kathryn Miller Priest

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is a cofactor that serves to shuttle electrons during metabolic processes such as glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) [1-5]. The reduced form of NAD, NADH, is autofluorescent, making it a measurable characteristic in the investigation of metabolic changes. The fluorescence lifetime of NADH is dependent on the state of protein binding, specifically free or bound NADH, allowing for detection of metabolic shifts between glycolysis (free NADH) and OXPHOS (bound NADH) [6-16]. Fiber-coupled time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) equipped with an implantable needle probe can be used to measure NADH lifetime in vivo …

Applying A Material Science Approach To Improve Rice Processing Performance, Michelle Oppong Siaw Dec 2022

Applying A Material Science Approach To Improve Rice Processing Performance, Michelle Oppong Siaw

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rice is typically consumed as whole kernel, which makes the economic value of whole kernels twice that of brokens. Macro-structural defects such as fissures and chalkiness have been recognized to weaken kernel mechanical strength, and thereby increase breakage during milling. However, high percentages of brokens are sometimes recorded even though these defects are controlled prior to milling. It was hypothesized that rice milling characteristics are influenced by endosperm porosity from the structural arrangement of chemical components and by bran thickness and composition. Thus, this study aimed to modify chemical components by applying treatments to alter rice porosity and its associated …

Through The Disciplinary Looking Glass: Examining The Impact Of The Adultification Of Black Adolescent Girls Through The Perspectives Of New York State School Administrators, Caron F. Cox Dec 2022

Through The Disciplinary Looking Glass: Examining The Impact Of The Adultification Of Black Adolescent Girls Through The Perspectives Of New York State School Administrators, Caron F. Cox

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the perceptions of school administrators regarding the impact adultification bias toward Black adolescent girls has on their overrepresentation in disciplinary data. Data were analyzed through 10 semi-structured interviews of principals and assistant principals. Social reproduction theory, intersectional theory, and Black feminist thought framed this study’s findings, which suggest that Black adolescent girls experience adultification bias regularly, contributing to their negative schooling experiences. These adverse experiences are often the result of a subjective interpretation of district policies through a biased lens.

The findings suggest that building leaders are often willing to facilitate …

Wading In White Waters: Black Non-Tenure-Track Faculty's Lived Experiences With Racial Microaggressions In Higher Education And Their Recommendations For Institutions, Departments And Dei Administrators, Sharmayne Jenkins Dec 2022

Wading In White Waters: Black Non-Tenure-Track Faculty's Lived Experiences With Racial Microaggressions In Higher Education And Their Recommendations For Institutions, Departments And Dei Administrators, Sharmayne Jenkins

Education Doctoral

Black faculty members are often underrepresented and suffer lower academic status at United States institutions with predominately White faculty. This is primarily because racism and racial microaggressions continue to be barriers. Unfortunately, academia has not adequately addressed race and privilege, pointed out the racist policies and actions of educators and administrators, or held perpetrators accountable. As a result, black faculty, especially those not protected by tenure, often face isolation, are overburdened with teaching and other responsibilities, are devalued for their research and teaching contributions, experience biased performance reviews, and endure other discriminatory incidences. This phenomenological narrative study explored the perceptions …

U.S. Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color (Bipoc) K-12 Principals Unmuted: A National Descriptive Survey Of Bipoc Principals’ Perceptions Of Their Superintendents’ Transformational Leadership Practices, Angela Kessler Dec 2022

U.S. Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color (Bipoc) K-12 Principals Unmuted: A National Descriptive Survey Of Bipoc Principals’ Perceptions Of Their Superintendents’ Transformational Leadership Practices, Angela Kessler

Education Doctoral

Historically, American compulsory education laws have mandated youth to attend public or state-accredited private schools in accordance with individually state selected ages. In order to ensure compliance with longstanding national and state education goals for youth, present-day federal and state education agencies charge K-12 leadership to school district superintendents and school building principals. Thus the quality of the leadership dynamic between K-12 superintendents and the principals they supervise is important to national and state goals of an educated American youth. However, despite the racial and ethnic diversity of American school children and teacher, principal, and superintendent populations, K-12 leadership research …

What Is There To Do If You Find An Old Indian Canoe? Anti-Colonialism In Maritime Archaeology, Sara A. Rich, Cheryl Sievers-Cail, Khamal Patterson Dec 2022

What Is There To Do If You Find An Old Indian Canoe? Anti-Colonialism In Maritime Archaeology, Sara A. Rich, Cheryl Sievers-Cail, Khamal Patterson

Honors College Faculty Publications

Following Max Liboiron’s claim that pollution is colonialism, the anti-colonial maritime archaeologist’s role in the Anthropocene might be to reframe research questions, so that focus is directed toward interactions between marine and maritime, and that the colonial ‘resurrectionist’ approach that has dominated nautical archaeology ought to be reconsidered altogether. This normative statement is put to the test with a 4000-year-old waterlogged dugout canoe that was illegally excavated from the Cooper River in South Carolina, USA. Upon retrieval, the affected tribal entities were brought into consultation with archaeologists and conservators to help decide how to proceed with the canoe’s remains. Tribal …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of The Adenylate Kinase Enzyme And Its Mutant States, Beata Izabella Dulko Smith Dec 2022

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of The Adenylate Kinase Enzyme And Its Mutant States, Beata Izabella Dulko Smith

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Adenylate kinase (AK) is a small, monomeric enzyme present across all domains of life. It is responsible for maintaining homeostasis of an intracellular adenylate pool and catalyzes a reversible transfer of the phosphoryl group from NTP (nucleoside triphosphate) to NMP producing two NDP molecules. While most known isoforms take ATP as phosphate donor, AK3 present in mitochondrial matrix employs GTP. Crystallographic investigations revealed that the basis for its selectivity for GTP over ATP came from an additional hydrogen bond between guanosine’s O6 and backbone nitrogen of threonine is responsible for recognition of GTP. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have demonstrated that …

Development Of Colorimetric And Fluorescent Antibiotic Biosensors And Synthesis Of Drug-Related Biomimetic Molecules For Calcium Carbonate Polymorph Control And Stabilization, Shan Hazoor

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Polydiacetylene (PDA) polymers are conjugated macromolecules with desirable sensing properties. The presence of alternate double and triple bonds (en-yne subunits) generates electron delocalization in the PDA backbone, yielding a characteristic blue color, which changes to red upon environmental perturbations to the conjugated backbone structure. In chapter 1 PDA polymers containing a functional monomer 10,12- pentacosadiynoic acid-vancomycin conjugate (PCDA-Van) were prepared. Syntheses of different monomers containing different polar head groups were carried out to investigate a compatible monomer with PCDA-van stability. Gram-positive bacterial cell wall sequencing oligopeptides (OP) D-Ala-D-Ala and L-Lys-D-Ala-D-Ala were synthesized as a model for bacterial sensing. The PCDA-Van …

Bacteriophage burst size is the average number of phage virions released from infected bacterial cells, and its magnitude depends on the duration of an intracellular progeny accumulation phase. Burst size is often measured at the population level, not the single-cell level, and consequently, statistical moments are not commonly available. In this study, we estimated the bacteriophage lambda (ƛ) single-cell burst size mean and variance following different intracellular accumulation period durations by employing Escherichia coli lysogens bearing lysis-deficient ƛ prophages. Single lysogens can be isolated and chemically lysed at desired times following prophage induction to quantify progeny intracellular accumulation within individual …

Transgender Health: Exploring Medicalization And The Interactions Of Race/Ethnicity, Disability, And Education, Evan Thomas England

Master's Theses and Capstones

There is a wide range of experiences among and between transgender, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) and disabled groups, but they all share histories of medicalization that result in marginalized health experiences and access to health care. To what extent do these health experiences and outcomes vary for U.S. adults with multiply marginalized intersectional identities? How, if at all, does the established moderating capability of education impact health outcomes for people who are transgender? Using data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, this study utilizes regression modelling to explore the interactions of race/ethnicity, disability, and education with …
