An Evaluation Of Hemp Cultivation Practices And Cannabinoid Analysis In South Louisiana, Kaylee M. Deynzer Jul 2022

An Evaluation Of Hemp Cultivation Practices And Cannabinoid Analysis In South Louisiana, Kaylee M. Deynzer

LSU Master's Theses

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) cultivation research did not exist in Louisiana prior to 2020 (LSU AgCenter Therapeutic Cannabis Committee, 2020). Therefore, nine cultivars of essential oil-type hemp were evaluated in 2020 and 2021 to determine optimum planting dates, in-row plant spacings and THC compliancy for organic field production in south Louisiana. Until suitable genetics for Louisiana’s environment can be identified, an in-row spacing of three feet is recommended for field-grown hemp. Cultivars Berry Blossom, Queen Dream and Stormy Daniels produced sufficient biomass for commercial production. While Berry Blossom, Queen Dream, Oregon White and Putin’s Problem were high-yielding, Oregon White …

Differences Between African American And White Males In Grades 6-8: Comparative Evidence From Selected Texas Rural Schools, Sheenah Maria Hopkins-Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The academic achievement gap among Black males in grades 6-8 across Texas is a growing concern. Based on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), secondary data from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) was used to evaluate scores from a sample of Texas rural schools. In this quantitative, non-experimental methods study, the dependent variable examined was the STAAR reading score at the “meets grade level,” and the independent dichotomous variables examined were: race, whether or not the student was classified in one of the following groups: ECD, at-risk, and special education. Academic trends from the 2017-2019 academic school …

Optimization Of A Novel Barnes Maze Protocol For Assessing Antioxidant Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Connor C. Gee Jul 2022

Optimization Of A Novel Barnes Maze Protocol For Assessing Antioxidant Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Connor C. Gee

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Current preclinical research into traumatic brain injury focuses heavily upon cellular and molecular testing to determine the effects of injury and potential benefits of neuroprotective treatments. While this may be a useful method, some argue that an increased focus on behavioral testing could lead to better clinical translation as these assays assess the longer term, downstream effects from a brain injury. The most characterized behavioral tests used in traumatic brain injury research are the spatial learning and memory paradigms, Morris Water Maze and Barnes Maze. The Morris Water Maze is the most used of theses paradigms and relies on spatial …

Effect Of Injury Mechanism And Severity On The Molecular Pathophysiology Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Brandon Mcdonald Jul 2022

Effect Of Injury Mechanism And Severity On The Molecular Pathophysiology Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Brandon Mcdonald

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) mechanism and severity are heterogenous clinically, resulting in a multitude of physical, cognitive, and behavioral deficits. However, approximately 80% suffer from milder injuries. Thus, examining pathophysiological changes associated with mild TBI is imperative for improving clinical translation and evaluating the efficacy of potential therapeutic strategies. Through this work, we developed models of TBI, ranging in both injury mechanism and severity, using an electromagnetic controlled cortical impact (CCI) device. First, we characterized and optimized a closed head, mild TBI model (DTBI) to determine the clinical translatability and practicality of producing repeated mild injuries. Interestingly, we determined that …

Proof-Of-Concept Studies Demonstrate That Food And Pheromone Stimuli Can Be Used To Attract Invasive Carp So Their Presence Can Be Readily Measured Using Environmental Dna, Ratna Ghosal, Alison A. Coulter, Peter W. Sorensen Jul 2022

Sorensen

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

he utility of environmental DNA (eDNA) as a detection tool for fisheries management is limited by dilution and degradation, especially in areas of low fish abundance. This proof-of-concept study addressed these challenges by testing whether food or pheromones might be used to attract invasive carp so they can be measured more readily using eDNA. In two experiments, PIT-tagged carp were stocked into ponds (N = 3 for silver carp; N = 1 for common carp) while one of two stimuli (planktonic food [spirulina] for silver carp and a sex pheromone [prostaglandin F2α] for male common carp) was added to determine …

Interference Of Morningglories (Ipomoea Spp.) With ‘Fascination’ Triploid Watermelon, Jeanine Arana, Stephen L. Meyers, Wenjing Guan, William G. Johnson

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

Morningglories (Ipomoea spp.) are among the most troublesome weeds in cucurbits in the United States; however, little is known about Ipomoea spp. interference with horticultural crops. Two additive design field studies were conducted in 2020 at two locations in Indiana to investigate the interference of ivyleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea Jacq.), entireleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea Jacq. var. integriuscula A. Gray.), and pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.) with triploid watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai]. Immediately after watermelon was transplanted, Ipomoea spp. seedlings were transplanted into the watermelon planting holes at densities of 0 (weed-free control), 3, 6, 12, 18, and …

Predicting Contaminant Transfer Following Re-Established Connectivity In The Boardman River, Ross A. Gay Jul 2022

Predicting Contaminant Transfer Following Re-Established Connectivity In The Boardman River, Ross A. Gay

All NMU Master's Theses

Anthropogenic alteration of the environment began as soon as people settled the Great Lakes (GL) region with hydrologic alteration (dams) and discharges of man-made chemicals into the air and water as populations and industry expanded. Consequently, the GL became a reservoir of anthropogenic contaminants such as mercury (Hg), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethylene (DDT), and organochloride compounds. Migratory fish accumulate and magnify contaminants within their tissues and transport them across ecosystem boundaries. Re-established connectivity in the form of dam removal has the potential to allow contaminant laden migrants access to ecosystems previously inaccessible. Here I assess the contaminant burden of a …

Security Simulations In Undergraduate Education: A Review, Joseph J. Simpson, Aaron Brantly

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

Several decades of research in simulation and gamification in higher education shows that simulations are highly effective in improving a range of outcomes for students including declarative knowledge and interest in the topic being taught. While there appears to be a broad array of options to provide education in an undergraduate setting related to security, no previous reviews have explored computer-based simulations covering all facets of security. Given the increasing importance and adoption of interdisciplinary educational programs, it is important to take stock of simulations as a tool to broaden the range of problems, perspectives, and solutions presented to students. …

Theorizing Gender In Social Network Research: What We Do And What We Can Do Differently, Raina Brands, Gokhan Ertug, Fabio Fonti, Stefano Tasselli Jul 2022

Theorizing Gender In Social Network Research: What We Do And What We Can Do Differently, Raina Brands, Gokhan Ertug, Fabio Fonti, Stefano Tasselli

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review the ways in which gender is theorized in social network research and propose an alternative approach for future research to consider. To assess “what we do,” we undertake an evaluative review. In that review, we first examine how gender is typically theorized in structural approaches to social network research. Then, in greater detail, we review social network research that affords more diversity into such theorizing. We organize this more detailed review around a framework that is based on the level of analysis at which the implications of gender are invoked (cognitive, behavioral) and the focus of relational mechanisms …

Prototypical Graph Contrastive Learning, Shuai Lin, Chen Liu, Pan Zhou, Zi-Yuan Hu, Shuojia Wang, Ruihui Zhao, Yefeng Zheng, Liang Lin, Eric Xing, Xiaodan Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph-level representations are critical in various real-world applications, such as predicting the properties of molecules. But in practice, precise graph annotations are generally very expensive and time-consuming. To address this issue, graph contrastive learning constructs instance discrimination task which pulls together positive pairs (augmentation pairs of the same graph) and pushes away negative pairs (augmentation pairs of different graphs) for unsupervised representation learning. However, since for a query, its negatives are uniformly sampled from all graphs, existing methods suffer from the critical sampling bias issue, i.e., the negatives likely having the same semantic structure with the query, leading to performance …

Transformative governance is key to addressing the global environmental crisis. We explore how transformative governance of complex biodiversity–climate–society interactions can be achieved, drawing on the first joint report between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services to reflect on the current opportunities, barriers, and challenges for transformative governance. We identify principles for transformative governance under a biodiversity–climate– society nexus frame using four case studies: forest ecosystems, marine ecosystems, urban environments, and the Arctic. The principles are focused on creating conditions to build multifunctional interventions, integration, and innovation across scales; coalitions of …

The Utility Of Clinical And Blood-Based Biomarkers To Discriminate Between Typical And Prolonged Pediatric Mtbi Symptom Recovery, Morgan E. Nitta Jul 2022

The Utility Of Clinical And Blood-Based Biomarkers To Discriminate Between Typical And Prolonged Pediatric Mtbi Symptom Recovery, Morgan E. Nitta

Dissertations (1934 -)

Prolonged recovery following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is poorly understood, particularly in pediatric samples, despite significant work to understand prolonged postconcussive symptoms (PPS). Emerging evidence in adult mTBI literature suggests blood-based biomarkers have diagnostic and prognostic value, but there is limited research examining this in pediatric mTBI. Further, while adult research documents that combining physiological biomarkers, emotional distress and symptom reports more optimally differentiates between mTBI and healthy controls, it is unknown if this finding will replicate in pediatric samples. This project examined foundational relationships between clinical, cognitive, inflammatory markers, and kynurenine pathway (KP) metabolites following mTBI in adolescents …

A Smartphone-Based Non-Invasive Measurement System For Blood Constituents From Photoplethysmography (Ppg) And Fingertip Videos Illuminated With The Near-Infrared Leds, Md Hasanul Aziz Jul 2022

A Smartphone-Based Non-Invasive Measurement System For Blood Constituents From Photoplethysmography (Ppg) And Fingertip Videos Illuminated With The Near-Infrared Leds, Md Hasanul Aziz

Dissertations (1934 -)

At least two billion people are affected by hemoglobin (Hgb), diabetic-related, and other blood-related diseases. Regular clinical assessments of these problems are conducted by analyzing venipuncture-obtained blood samples in laboratories. A non-invasive, cheap, point-of-care, and accurate test is needed everywhere. We started with Hgb measurement, and after an extensive literature survey, we came up with a non-invasive solution with 10-second Smartphone videos of the index fingertips using custom hardware sets to illuminate the fingers. We tested four lighting conditions with wavelengths in the near-infrared spectrum suggested by the absorption properties of two primary components of blood- oxygenated Hgb and plasma. …

Modulation Of Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis In Yeast – Role Of The Mrp7 (Bl27) Protein, Jessica Anderson Jul 2022

Modulation Of Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis In Yeast – Role Of The Mrp7 (Bl27) Protein, Jessica Anderson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) is responsible for the generation of most of the cellular energy (ATP) within the cell. OXPHOS enzymes are mosaic in origin, as protein subunits are encoded by both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. Mitochondrial ribosomes have been shown to respond to the availability and import of nuclearly encoded OXPHOS components, and thus the current dogma states that mitochondrial translation is synchronized to the import of these nuclear encoded proteins, as well as the availability of chaperones to co-assemble them within the inner mitochondrial membrane. We demonstrate here that the yeast Mrp7 (bL27) protein is involved in the coordination …

The Sex Difference In Depressive Symptoms Among College Students, Penelope E. Seminario Jul 2022

The Sex Difference In Depressive Symptoms Among College Students, Penelope E. Seminario

Research Psychology Theses

The sex difference in depression is a well-established and replicated clinical finding, with previous literature indicating that females report more depression than males. However, recent theory and research suggests the sex gap in depressive symptoms may have declined or been eliminated in recent years. The current study examined depressive symptoms among a current (2017-2021) cohort of 1377 undergraduates (18-29 years; M=19.80, 79% female) using the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). I hypothesized that the current sex difference in depressive symptoms would be small or nonsignificant. Results indicated that although males reported more anhedonia (t = 2.65, …

Simulated Owl Predation During Foraging Differentially Alters Choice And Fear Behavior Between Sex In Rats, Meghan M. Olsen Jul 2022

Simulated Owl Predation During Foraging Differentially Alters Choice And Fear Behavior Between Sex In Rats, Meghan M. Olsen

Research Psychology Theses

Existing research on the predator cue circuit has indicated there are observed differences between sexes of animals either directly or indirectly exposed to a predator stimulus. Exposure increases predator directed attention, and overrides other motivational systems (hunger, pain, reproductive behavior). Little research has explored whether exposure to predation is associated with differential responses to non-predator related decision-making across a variety of tasks. Therefore, understanding the prioritization of motivational states when a predator stressor is present can aid in understanding sex differences in these processes in both adaptative and maladaptive conditions. To determine how repeated exposure to a predator stressor differentially …

Fabrication Of Polymeric Microparticles Loaded With Zoledronic Acid To Treat Osteoarthritis, Yohely Maria Espiritusanto Jul 2022

Fabrication Of Polymeric Microparticles Loaded With Zoledronic Acid To Treat Osteoarthritis, Yohely Maria Espiritusanto

Theses - ALL

Osteoarthritis (OA), a disease caused by wearing and tearing of articular cartilage, affectsover 32.5 million Americans. Synovial inflammation is now recognized as a major contributor to OA progression and pain. Activated synovial macrophages in an OA joint are believed to play a major role in low grade inflammation found in OA. Bisphosphonates such as zoledronic acid (ZA) are known to induce apoptosis specifically in macrophages and several of them are being evaluated as a disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug in clinical trials. However, ZA is rapidly cleared from the joint after systemic or localized direct injection into the joint. In this study …

The Maay Maay Nominal System And Its Tonology, Katrina Smith

Theses - ALL

The aim of this thesis is to explore the tonology of the nominal system in Kenyan Maay Maay (KMM). In particular, this thesis describes the structure of nouns and noun phrases and outlines an analysis of tonal alternations based on a combination of word shape and grammatical gender that have not previously been discussed. The goal is to understand the nature of the language's prosodic system and how it may have developed. This thesis complements research on other Maay dialects that report rather different prosodic properties, ranging from not having a tonal system (Comfort & Paster 2009; Paster 2006; Paster …

Targeting Mutated Kras And Galectin-1 In Pancreatic Cancer, Ana Izavelle Martinez Bulnes Jul 2022

Targeting Mutated Kras And Galectin-1 In Pancreatic Cancer, Ana Izavelle Martinez Bulnes

Theses and Dissertations

The poor patient survival rate in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a challenge. KRAS activating point mutation on codon-12 is found in 70–95 percent of PDAC patients, and no progress in inhibiting KRAS has been obtained thus far. KRASG12D is a transcription factor that controls cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Recent preliminary and published research indicates that Galectin-1 (Gal-1) levels are high in both PDAC and stromal cells, which modulates tumor microenvironment and metastasis. As a result, we created a new combination treatment for PDAC that targets both proliferation and metastasis in PDAC by targeting mutant KRASG12D and Gal-1. This …

Associative Learning In The Monodelphis Domestica Utilizing The Cpa Paradigm, Joseph Caleb Cantu

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to investigate associative learning in the Monodelphis domestica by utilizing the conditioned place aversion paradigm (CPA). The Monodelphis domestica has been used as an animal model for research in multiple fields; however, there is still little information regarding associative learning or utilizing a CPA paradigm. Expanding the literature of the Monodelphis domestica would be adding to the limited research concerning associative learning utilizing the CPA paradigm.

Encoding Color Sequences In Active Tile Self-Assembly, Sonya Cirlos Jul 2022

Encoding Color Sequences In Active Tile Self-Assembly, Sonya Cirlos

Theses and Dissertations

Constructing patterns is a well-studied problem in both theoretical and experimental self-assembly with much of the work focused on multi-staged assembly. In this paper, we study building 1D patterns in a model of active self assembly: Tile Automata. This is a generalization of the 2-handed assembly model that borrows the concept of state changes from Cellular Automata. In this work we further develop the model by partitioning states as colors and show lower and upper bounds for building patterned assemblies based on an input pattern. Our first two sections utilize recent results to build binary strings along …
