Modulation Of Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis In Yeast – Role Of The Mrp7 (Bl27) Protein, Jessica Anderson Jul 2022

Modulation Of Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis In Yeast – Role Of The Mrp7 (Bl27) Protein, Jessica Anderson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) is responsible for the generation of most of the cellular energy (ATP) within the cell. OXPHOS enzymes are mosaic in origin, as protein subunits are encoded by both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. Mitochondrial ribosomes have been shown to respond to the availability and import of nuclearly encoded OXPHOS components, and thus the current dogma states that mitochondrial translation is synchronized to the import of these nuclear encoded proteins, as well as the availability of chaperones to co-assemble them within the inner mitochondrial membrane. We demonstrate here that the yeast Mrp7 (bL27) protein is involved in the coordination …

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background:

Twitter provides a valuable platform for the surveillance and monitoring of public health topics; however, manually categorizing large quantities of Twitter data is labor intensive and presents barriers to identify major trends and sentiments. Additionally, while machine and deep learning approaches have been proposed with high accuracy, they require large, annotated data sets. Public pretrained deep learning classification models, such as BERTweet, produce higher-quality models while using smaller annotated training sets.

Objective:

This study aims to derive and evaluate a pretrained deep learning model based on BERTweet that can identify tweets relevant to vaping, tweets (related to vaping) of …

The Sex Difference In Depressive Symptoms Among College Students, Penelope E. Seminario Jul 2022

The Sex Difference In Depressive Symptoms Among College Students, Penelope E. Seminario

Research Psychology Theses

The sex difference in depression is a well-established and replicated clinical finding, with previous literature indicating that females report more depression than males. However, recent theory and research suggests the sex gap in depressive symptoms may have declined or been eliminated in recent years. The current study examined depressive symptoms among a current (2017-2021) cohort of 1377 undergraduates (18-29 years; M=19.80, 79% female) using the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). I hypothesized that the current sex difference in depressive symptoms would be small or nonsignificant. Results indicated that although males reported more anhedonia (t = 2.65, …

Simulated Owl Predation During Foraging Differentially Alters Choice And Fear Behavior Between Sex In Rats, Meghan M. Olsen Jul 2022

Simulated Owl Predation During Foraging Differentially Alters Choice And Fear Behavior Between Sex In Rats, Meghan M. Olsen

Research Psychology Theses

Existing research on the predator cue circuit has indicated there are observed differences between sexes of animals either directly or indirectly exposed to a predator stimulus. Exposure increases predator directed attention, and overrides other motivational systems (hunger, pain, reproductive behavior). Little research has explored whether exposure to predation is associated with differential responses to non-predator related decision-making across a variety of tasks. Therefore, understanding the prioritization of motivational states when a predator stressor is present can aid in understanding sex differences in these processes in both adaptative and maladaptive conditions. To determine how repeated exposure to a predator stressor differentially …

Fabrication Of Polymeric Microparticles Loaded With Zoledronic Acid To Treat Osteoarthritis, Yohely Maria Espiritusanto Jul 2022

Fabrication Of Polymeric Microparticles Loaded With Zoledronic Acid To Treat Osteoarthritis, Yohely Maria Espiritusanto

Theses - ALL

Osteoarthritis (OA), a disease caused by wearing and tearing of articular cartilage, affectsover 32.5 million Americans. Synovial inflammation is now recognized as a major contributor to OA progression and pain. Activated synovial macrophages in an OA joint are believed to play a major role in low grade inflammation found in OA. Bisphosphonates such as zoledronic acid (ZA) are known to induce apoptosis specifically in macrophages and several of them are being evaluated as a disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug in clinical trials. However, ZA is rapidly cleared from the joint after systemic or localized direct injection into the joint. In this study …

Theses - ALL

Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) is a well-studied active learning model that is associated with improved educational outcomes for students. The introductory biology course at Syracuse University (SU) has a well-established PLTL program, and published research stemming from this program has shown that PLTL has positive impacts on the short- and long-term retention of underrepresented minority (URM) students in STEM. However, there are additional data regarding potential benefits of the PLTL program for women and first-generation college students that have yet to be published. In this thesis, I present previously unpublished data indicating that women and first-generation college students who …

The Maay Maay Nominal System And Its Tonology, Katrina Smith Jul 2022

The Maay Maay Nominal System And Its Tonology, Katrina Smith

Theses - ALL

The aim of this thesis is to explore the tonology of the nominal system in Kenyan Maay Maay (KMM). In particular, this thesis describes the structure of nouns and noun phrases and outlines an analysis of tonal alternations based on a combination of word shape and grammatical gender that have not previously been discussed. The goal is to understand the nature of the language's prosodic system and how it may have developed. This thesis complements research on other Maay dialects that report rather different prosodic properties, ranging from not having a tonal system (Comfort & Paster 2009; Paster 2006; Paster …

Targeting Mutated Kras And Galectin-1 In Pancreatic Cancer, Ana Izavelle Martinez Bulnes Jul 2022

Targeting Mutated Kras And Galectin-1 In Pancreatic Cancer, Ana Izavelle Martinez Bulnes

Theses and Dissertations

The poor patient survival rate in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a challenge. KRAS activating point mutation on codon-12 is found in 70–95 percent of PDAC patients, and no progress in inhibiting KRAS has been obtained thus far. KRASG12D is a transcription factor that controls cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Recent preliminary and published research indicates that Galectin-1 (Gal-1) levels are high in both PDAC and stromal cells, which modulates tumor microenvironment and metastasis. As a result, we created a new combination treatment for PDAC that targets both proliferation and metastasis in PDAC by targeting mutant KRASG12D and Gal-1. This …

Associative Learning In The Monodelphis Domestica Utilizing The Cpa Paradigm, Joseph Caleb Cantu

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims to investigate associative learning in the Monodelphis domestica by utilizing the conditioned place aversion paradigm (CPA). The Monodelphis domestica has been used as an animal model for research in multiple fields; however, there is still little information regarding associative learning or utilizing a CPA paradigm. Expanding the literature of the Monodelphis domestica would be adding to the limited research concerning associative learning utilizing the CPA paradigm.

Encoding Color Sequences In Active Tile Self-Assembly, Sonya Cirlos Jul 2022

Encoding Color Sequences In Active Tile Self-Assembly, Sonya Cirlos

Theses and Dissertations

Constructing patterns is a well-studied problem in both theoretical and experimental self-assembly with much of the work focused on multi-staged assembly. In this paper, we study building 1D patterns in a model of active self assembly: Tile Automata. This is a generalization of the 2-handed assembly model that borrows the concept of state changes from Cellular Automata. In this work we further develop the model by partitioning states as colors and show lower and upper bounds for building patterned assemblies based on an input pattern. Our first two sections utilize recent results to build binary strings along …

Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On Mangrove And Saltmarsh Habitats, Elena A. Flores Jul 2022

Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On Mangrove And Saltmarsh Habitats, Elena A. Flores

Theses and Dissertations

Nutrient over-enrichment is a global threat to coastal and marine environments. Yet, system-specific attributes of estuarine and coastal ecosystems may result in large differences in their sensitivity and susceptibility to such threat. In tropical latitudes, plant species adapted to low-nutrient habitats generally have nutrient-conservation mechanisms that acquire, use, and internally recycle nutrients efficiently. Thus, a major challenge for managers and decision makers is to develop a predictive and holistic understanding of how nutrient loading alters ecosystem functions and therefore ecosystem services. The objective of the present research is to document short and long-term effects of persistent nutrient …

Adjacency And Connectivity Matrices To Airline Connections Among Airports, Alejandra Munoz Jul 2022

Adjacency And Connectivity Matrices To Airline Connections Among Airports, Alejandra Munoz

Theses and Dissertations

We study how powers of adjacency and connectivity matrices can be used to investigate airline connections among airports. For this study, only matrices with all diagonal elements of “0” are considered (i.e., an airport is not connected to itself) and each matrix must contain at least one entry of “1” in each row and column (i.e., each airport contains at least one inbound and one outbound route). Sets of 3, 4, and 5 airports are discussed in this study, comparing cases with up to 3, 4, and 5 round routes, respectively, in an effort to find the amount of paths …

An Analysis Of Income And Healthcare Disparities Across Minority Populations By Incorporating Community Resource Collaboration In Public Policy, Ohioze O. Obadan

Theses and Dissertations

There is widespread literature on the connection between public policy, resource allocation, and income and health inequalities among minority communities. While various services are created to help communities, the distribution and allocation of these services remain elusive, without any collaboration towards a common objective among public policy leaders. This paper investigates the disparities in the access to healthcare within Florida, a state selected because of its documented problems with healthcare access. This thesis research analyzes the income and health inequalities in minority populations in Florida by integrating community resource collaboration into public policy. The study used secondary data from public …

An Analysis Of Mental Health, Psychosocial Stressors, And Social Support Among Latinx Students Who Relocate For College, Lisa A. Lozano Jul 2022

An Analysis Of Mental Health, Psychosocial Stressors, And Social Support Among Latinx Students Who Relocate For College, Lisa A. Lozano

Theses and Dissertations

Relocating for college is one facet of the college adjustment process that has been scarcely explored. Research suggests that relocated students report more severe depression symptoms (Reyes-Rodriguez et al., 2012), poorer social adjustment (Brooks & Dubois, 1995), and worse mental health overall (King et al., 2011) compared to nonrelocated students. This study hypothesized that relocated Latinx college students would experience more severe mental health concerns (depression, anxiety, and stress), psychosocial stress (acculturative stress, loneliness, and sense of belonging), and perceived social support than their nonrelocated counterparts. 159 underclassmen with permanent residence in a South Texas community were surveyed in a …

Influence Of Paclitaxel Nanomedicine On The Pancreatic Tumor Immune Components, Godwin Peasah-Darkwah Jul 2022

Influence Of Paclitaxel Nanomedicine On The Pancreatic Tumor Immune Components, Godwin Peasah-Darkwah

Theses and Dissertations

Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortalities in the U.S due to ineffective therapeutic options. Pancreatic tumors are highly desmoplastic and inhibit efficient uptake of therapeutic payloads. Paclitaxel (PTX) has been tested in PanCa therapy with marginally better clinical outcomes, but remain limited by its poor hemocompatibility, biodistribution and intracellular accumulation in tumor cells. Thus, we synthesized a next generation nanoparticle system for PTX to improve its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PKPD) in treating PanCa. We also examined ability of the nano formulation to potentiate gemcitabine (GEM) activity in combating chemoresistance in the pancreatic tumor microenvironment …

Properties And Behavior Of Tricarbonyl Manganese Scorpionate Complexes, Billy Shone Jul 2022

Properties And Behavior Of Tricarbonyl Manganese Scorpionate Complexes, Billy Shone

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Manganese tricarbonyl complexes have widely been studied for their ability to release carbon monoxide (CO) in the presence of light for potential applications in cancer therapy and in catalysis. Most studies focus on the kinetics and quantity of CO release and the overall impact on cell death. Far fewer studies identify the manganese intermediates and final products after decarbonylation. Identification of such products would be critical to improving reactivity and understanding potential (undesirable) side effects in future applications employing these CO releasing molecules (CORMs). Recently, nitrogen confused C-scorpionate ligands were introduced by the Gardinier group where a pyrazolyl ring is …

A Physiological Computing System To Improve Human-Robot Collaboration By Using Human Comfort Index, Celal Savur Jul 2022

A Physiological Computing System To Improve Human-Robot Collaboration By Using Human Comfort Index, Celal Savur

Theses

Fluent human-robot collaboration requires a robot teammate to understand, learn, and adapt to the human's psycho-physiological state. Such collaborations require a physiological computing system that monitors human biological signals during human-robot collaboration (HRC) to quantitatively estimate a human's level of comfort, which we have termed in this research as comfortability index (CI) and uncomfortability index (UnCI). We proposed a human comfort index estimation system (CIES) that uses biological signals and subjective metrics. Subjective metrics (surprise, anxiety, boredom, calmness, and comfortability) and physiological signals were collected during a human-robot collaboration experiment that varied the robot's behavior. The emotion circumplex model is …

Cross-Cultural Performativity Of Gender Communication In Heather Raffo’S Nine Parts Of Desire, Shaimaa M. Saeed Jul 2022

Cross-Cultural Performativity Of Gender Communication In Heather Raffo’S Nine Parts Of Desire, Shaimaa M. Saeed

English Language and Literature

Since the mid-twentieth century, the study of gender has constituted a fundamental part of many interdisciplinary research works due to its multi-perspective nature which made it a fertile ground for analysis in diversified fields of science. Discussions over sex/gender distinction and the representation as well as perception of gender ceaselessly exist within controversially enriching, discursive frameworks. In 1990, Judith Butler (1956- ), one of the prominent feminist theorists in the field of gender studies, first coined the concept of “gender performativity,” where she challenged the conventional notions of ethnomethodologists and phenomenologists who restricted the perception and communication of gender to …

Embryology Of The Gekkota: Insights Into The Evolution An Development Of Morphological Diversity, Aaron Harp Griffing Jul 2022

Embryology Of The Gekkota: Insights Into The Evolution An Development Of Morphological Diversity, Aaron Harp Griffing

Dissertations (1934 -)

Understanding the patterns and processes which result in morphological diversity is a central goal of evolutionary developmental biology or evo-devo. This diversity encompasses morphologies which have evolved numerous, independent times within a clade (evolutionary convergence) and others which have evolved only once within a clade (i.e. evolutionary novelty). Though many of these diverse morphologies exhibit functional capabilities and are intertwined with the ecology and diversification of the evolutionary lineage in question, their origins are largely unknown. Robust phylogenic analysis, genomic information, and detailed developmental data are critical lines of evidence to explain the evolutionary and ontogenetic origins of morphological novelty …

Frontal-Cerebellar Eeg As An Index Of Risk For Alzheimer's Disease In Healthy Elders, Elizabeth Paitel Jul 2022

Frontal-Cerebellar Eeg As An Index Of Risk For Alzheimer's Disease In Healthy Elders, Elizabeth Paitel

Dissertations (1934 -)

The Apolipoprotein-E (APOE) ε4 allele is the greatest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but alone it is not sufficiently predictive. Because neuropathological changes associated with AD begin decades before cognitive symptoms, neuroimaging of healthy, cognitively intact ε4 carriers (ε4+) may enable early characterization of neural patterns associated with risk for future cognitive decline. Research has typically focused on the cerebral cortex, where elders and ε4+ tend to exhibit ‘recruitment’ (i.e., hyperactivation) to maintain cognitive functioning. Yet, recent evidence suggests that AD-related changes may occur even earlier in the cerebellum. Moreover, advances in electroencephalography (EEG) source localization now …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Biomimetic Co And Fe Complexes With Trispyrazolylborate Ligands, Praveen Kumar Jul 2022

Synthesis And Characterization Of Biomimetic Co And Fe Complexes With Trispyrazolylborate Ligands, Praveen Kumar

Dissertations (1934 -)

Numerous reactions of biological and environmental significance are catalyzed by dioxygenases that incorporate both atoms of O2 into the substrate. These enzymes require a transition-metal cofactor for activity, typically a mononuclear nonheme iron center, although dioxygenases with first-row transition metal ions (Mn, Co, Ni) have been discovered. This dissertation focuses on synthetic studies based on mononuclear dioxygenases found in bacterial pathways for the breakdown and assimilation of inert organic compounds, including human-generated pollutants. Such enzymes are essential for bioremediation technologies used to restore contaminated soils and groundwaters. While crystallographic studies have revealed the active-site structures of various types of dioxygenases, …

Improved Management Of Recalcitrant Nutrient Species: Transformation And Adsorption, Synthia Parveen Mallick Jul 2022

Improved Management Of Recalcitrant Nutrient Species: Transformation And Adsorption, Synthia Parveen Mallick

Dissertations (1934 -)

Soluble non-reactive nutrient species, i.e., dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and soluble non-reactive phosphorus (sNRP), are not effectively removed and recovered. Unfortunately, the non-reactive species can cause eutrophication in receiving waterbodies. Thus, removal and recovery of soluble non-reactive nutrients is critical for reducing nutrient discharge and advancing the national goal of enhanced nutrient recovery. Transformation of non-reactive nutrients to more readily removable/recoverable species using ozonation and UV/H2O2 for enhanced nutrient recovery has been reported in literature. Electrooxidation (EO) may outperform these processes in transforming nutrients as EO can utilize multiple oxidation pathways, e.g., in-situ generated oxidants or direct electron transfer (DET). …

Immobilized Phosphate-Binding Protein Systems To Remove And Recover Phosphate, Faten Bakri Hussein Jul 2022

Immobilized Phosphate-Binding Protein Systems To Remove And Recover Phosphate, Faten Bakri Hussein

Dissertations (1934 -)

Inorganic phosphorus (Pi) is a critical element for all life and a major component of DNA’s backbone. Global agriculture requires Pi to support the rapid growth of plants and high crop productivity. Yet, the mineable Pi supply needed for global agriculture is in short supply in nature and Pi reserves are unevenly distributed around the world. In contrast, surplus Pi in water poses a serious pollution problem as it can cause eutrophication. Scarcity of non-renewable Pi resources combined with pollution in the form of overabundant Pi presents a phosphorus paradox. Tackling this issue is necessary and using innovative approaches targeting …

Evolution Of Sex Chromosomes In Geckos (Reptilia: Gekkota), Shannon Elizabeth Keating Jul 2022

Evolution Of Sex Chromosomes In Geckos (Reptilia: Gekkota), Shannon Elizabeth Keating

Dissertations (1934 -)

Sex chromosomes control sex determination in many plants and animals, playing a vital role in a species’ evolution. Current models of sex chromosome evolution have been formulated by studying clades with stable, morphologically distinct (heteromorphic) sex chromosomes, such as mammals and birds. However, many taxa have morphologically indistinguishable (homomorphic) sex chromosomes, including many fish, amphibians, and reptiles. The knowledge gained from these understudied systems may provide new insights into the overarching paradigms of sex chromosome evolution. Thus, the historical focus on stable, heteromorphic sex chromosomes and failure to consider homomorphic sex chromosomes or systems with frequent turnovers may mean the …

Open Innovation Web-Based Platform For Evaluation Of Water Quality Based On Big Data Analysis, Xiaofang Han, Hong Shen, Hongqing Hu, Jerry Gao

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

There are many models presented that assess water quality. However, the applications of the models are limited due to the difficulty of preparing input data and interpreting model output. In this paper, we developed a Web-based platform to assist researchers in analyzing water quality. The data from sensors can be automatically imported to the platform according to the configured information of data structures. The platform also provides conventional methods and big data methods for the users to analyze water quality. Moreover, the users can choose the water quality parameters according to the water usage. The presented platform can show the …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The World Health Organization labelled the new COVID-19 breakout a public health crisis of worldwide concern on 30 January 2020, and it was named the new global pandemic in March 2020. It has had catastrophic consequences on the world economy and well-being of people and has put a tremendous strain on already-scarce healthcare systems globally, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Over 11 billion vaccine doses have already been administered worldwide, and the benefits of these vaccinations will take some time to appear. Today, the only practical approach to diagnosing COVID-19 is through the RT-PCR and RAT tests, which have sometimes been …
