Application Of Lerch Polynomials To Approximate Solution Of Singular Fredholm Integral Equations With Cauchy Kernelapplication Of Lerch Polynomials To Approximate Solution Of Singular Fredholm Integral Equations With Cauchy Kernel, Doaa Shokry Mohamed
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we develop an effective method based on Lerch polynomials to provide an approximate solution of various cases of Cauchy type singular integral equations. The method reduces the solution of given singular integral equation to the solution of a matrix equation corresponding to linear system of algebraic equations with unknown Lerch coefficients. Error estimation of the presented method is mentioned. Finally, several examples show the reliability and efficiently of the proposed method.
The Cordiality For The Join Of Pairs Of The Third Power Of Paths, E. A. Elsakhawy
The Cordiality For The Join Of Pairs Of The Third Power Of Paths, E. A. Elsakhawy
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
A graph is said to be cordial if it has a 0−1 labeling that satisfies certain properties. The third power of path P3, is the graph n obtained from the path Pn by adding edges that join all vertices and with d ≤ 3. In this paper, we show that Pn3 is cordial if and only if n ̸= 4. Moreover, we study the cordiality for the sum of pairs of the third power of paths. Keywords:

On Categorical Property Of Fuzzy Soft Topological Spaces, S. Saleh, Radwan Abu-Gdairi, Tareq M. Al-Shami, Mohammed S. Abdo
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The main aim of this work is to provide a categorical framework for fuzzy soft topological spaces FST. We define some of their subcategories such as Top, STop, δτ-FST, χ-FST, and α-FST. In general, we initiate some functors between them and discuss some results and relations of fuzzy soft maps. The relationships between FST and their subcategories are studied, for instance, we show that Top, STop are bireflective full subcategories of FST and α-FSTis a bicoreflective full subcategory of FST. Moreover, we demonstrate that Top, δτ -FST, and χ-FST are isomorphic.

Compositional And Functional Changes In Microbial Communities Of Composts Due To The Composting-Related Factors And The Presence Of Listeria Monocytogenes, Hongye Wang, Vijay Shankar, Xiuping Jiang
Open Access Publishing Fund
Listeria monocytogenes is a leading foodborne pathogen that can contaminate fresh produce in farm environment, resulting in deadly outbreaks. Composts contain a diversity of microorganisms, and some of them may be compost-adapted competitive exclusion microorganisms against L. monocytogenes. To understand interactions between compost microflora and the pathogen, both dairy- and poultry-wastes based composts (n = 12) were inoculated with L. monocytogenes, and then analyzed by next-generation sequencing approaches along with culturing methods. DNA extraction and enumeration of L. monocytogenes were performed at 0 and 72 h post-incubation at room temperature. The major bacterial phyla were identified as Firmicutes (23%), Proteobacteria …
Development Of A Companion Assay To Assist In The Study Of Fibrinolytic Therapy For Retained Hemothorax, Charlotte S. Huckestein
Development Of A Companion Assay To Assist In The Study Of Fibrinolytic Therapy For Retained Hemothorax, Charlotte S. Huckestein
Biotechnology Theses
Hemothorax is a condition where blood and pleural fluid become trapped between the lung(s) and chest wall [1-3], typically from blunt or penetrating trauma [3]. Intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy (IPFT) is a less invasive treatment option that is used to treat retained hemothorax, allowing it to be broken down and drained through tube thoracostomy. IPFT has been successfully modeled in a rabbit system, thus allowing the examination of various treatment options pre-clinically. To help support the use of this animal model, blood halo assay (BHA) was developed to assess the efficacy of various plasminogen activators for use with IPFT. The BHA …

Watershed Prioritization To Reduce Nutrient Export: A Framework For The State Of Arkansas Based On Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Data, Erin Grantz, Brian E. Haggard
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
The annual formation of the Northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone is driven by nutrient loading from the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River Basin (MARB). Member States of The Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task have developed statewide strategies to identify priorities and opportunities for nutrient export reduction in the MARB. In 2014, the State of Arkansas joined the Task Force and initiated an Arkansas Nutrient Reduction Strategy (ANRS), which currently prioritizes ten Hydrologic Unit Code 8 (HUC-8) watersheds (ANRD, 2014). These priority watersheds were not selected based on measured in-stream nutrient concentrations or trends, which impedes quantitative assessment, goal setting, and linking …

Ants And Spices: Multiple Bioassays Investigating Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) And Chili Powder As Repellents For Ants (Formicidae), Luca Ben Yishay-Sapalio
2022 REYES Proceedings
Spices offer an environmentally friendly method of controlling ants (Formicidae) in homes. In this study, I used three bioassays to examine the effect of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and one bioassay to examine the effect of Chili Powder as repellents for ants. Tests were conducted near active ants outdoors. All bioassays examined paired control and treatment baits along a transect, and control baits consisted of a small sheet of corrugated cardboard (a sterile yet easy to manipulate substrate) with granulated sugar on top. In the first bioassay, treatment baits were similar to controls but with Turmeric covering the sugar. …
From The Shadows Of Incarceration To Higher Education: Associated Invisible Identity Development Of College Students With Incarcerated Parents, Andrea Blake
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of college students who have experienced parental incarceration and explore how they make meaning of their associated invisible identity in the campus environment at four-year institutions in the U.S. Traditionally socio-historical events and messages about system-impacted individuals, their families, and children have contributed to the invisibility of this population in educational settings. This study employed a narrative inquiry approach. Also, it applied Bronfenbrenner’s (1977, 1979, 1993) ecological model to explore the college experiences of ACIPs while not excluding wider societal and environmental factors that could shape their associated invisible identity …

Algorithms Of Solar Energy Prediction Combined With Percentile Root Estimation Of Three-Parameters Distributions, M. El Genidy, W. Megahed, K. Mahfouz
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We propose three algorithms to the problem of solar energy prediction and Percentile Root Estimation (PRE) of three- parameters distributions. The first algorithm named Algorithm of Change Rate Matrix (ACRM), Our approach is based on creating a matrix of solar energy change rates for each month separately during successive years. ACRM is characterized by not relying on the transition matrix or Markov model. The second algorithm named Algorithm of Converting Dataset to Markov model (ACDM) depends on the transition states of the solar energy and Markov model for a month during successive years. The results were compared with the actual …

How To Detect The Fundamental Frequency: Approach Motivated By Soft Computing And Computational Complexity, Eric Freudenthal, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Psychologists have shown that most information about the mood and attitude of a speaker is carried by the lowest (fundamental) frequency. Because of this frequency's importance, even when the corresponding Fourier component is weak, the human brain reconstruct this frequency based on higher harmonics. The problems is that many people lack this ability. To help them better understand moods and attitudes in social interaction, it is therefore desirable to come up with devices and algorithms that would reconstruct the fundamental frequency. In this paper, we show that ideas from soft computing and computational complexity can be used for this purpose.

Why Time Seems To Pass Slowly For Unpleasant Experiences And Quickly For Pleasant Experiences: An Explanation Based On Decision Theory, Laxman Bokati, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that our perception of time depends on our level of happiness: time seems to pass slower when we have unpleasant experiences and faster if our experiences are pleasant. Several explanations have been proposed for this effect. However, these explanations are based on specific features of human memory and/or human perception, features that, in turn, need explaining. In this paper, we show that this effect can be explained on a much more basic level of decision theory, without utilizing any specific features of human memory or perception.

Spiking Neural Networks And Their Applications: A Review, Kashu Yamazaki, Viet-Khao Vo-Ho, Darshan Bulsara, Ngan Le
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The past decade has witnessed the great success of deep neural networks in various domains. However, deep neural networks are very resource-intensive in terms of energy consumption, data requirements, and high computational costs. With the recent increasing need for the autonomy of machines in the real world, e.g., self-driving vehicles, drones, and collaborative robots, exploitation of deep neural networks in those applications has been actively investigated. In those applications, energy and computational efficiencies are especially important because of the need for real-time responses and the limited energy supply. A promising solution to these previously infeasible applications has recently been given …

Those of us in the United States often take for granted that the water coming out of our faucets will be safe for drinking, cleaning, or brushing our teeth. Despite this, each year nearly half a million people visit emergency rooms because of waterborne diseases, resulting in over 100,000 hospital stays and thousands of deaths (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] 2020). In fact, the CDC estimated that in 2017 people in the United States spent $3.8 billion on emergency room visits for waterborne illnesses.

Evaluation Of Silver Nanoparticles Attached To Methylene Blue As An Antimicrobial Agent And Its Cytotoxicity, Somon Hakimov
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Antibiotics resistance is considered as one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. In this work, we have synthesized silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using pulsed liquid ablation in different medium of growth and later combined with methylene blue (MB) to evaluate its potential as an effective photodynamic therapy agent. Ag NPs were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation technique in Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), citrate, and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The Ag NPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Visible (UV-Vis), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Next, Ag NPs were coupled with MB and used to deactivate the Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli …

Total Prevention: A History Of Schistosomiasis In Japan, Alexander Bay
Total Prevention: A History Of Schistosomiasis In Japan, Alexander Bay
History Faculty Articles and Research
In Japan, schistosomiasis was endemic in Yamanashi Prefecture and a few other hotspot areas where the Miya’iri snail lived. The parasite’s lifecycle relied on the intermediary Miya’iri snail as well as the human host. Parasite eggs passed into the agrarian environment through untreated night soil used as fertiliser or through the culture of open defecation in rural Japan. Manmade rice fields and irrigation ditches, night soil covered paddies and highly refined growing seasons put people in flooded rice paddies to intensively work the land in the spring and summer. The disease was equally dependent on human intervention in the natural …
Innovation In Adversity, Clark D. Asay, Stephanie Plamondon Bair
Innovation In Adversity, Clark D. Asay, Stephanie Plamondon Bair
Florida State University Law Review
Adverse experiences, like long-term poverty, can inhibit innovation. But as much research and many real-world examples show, adversity can also stimulate innovation. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic provides a number of recent examples where adverse conditions have led individuals, firms, and governments to innovate in the hope of benefiting society. Despite the fact that some forms of adversity undermine innovation while others stimulate it, legal scholars have largely failed to distinguish between the two forms or even account for adversity's relationship to innovation when assessing innovation law and policy, including intellectual property (IP) laws. Yet given adversity's significant role in affecting …

Statistical Genetic Discoveries Using Restricted Maximum Likelihood Method, Erika Wu
2022 REYES Proceedings
In statistical genetics, genetic association and genomic prediction become more successful with a highly heritable trait. Identifying highly heritable components of a complex disease can thus advance scientific understanding of the disease and potentially lead to effective prevention and treatments. Using Matlab and existing large-scale genome datasets, we evaluate a restricted maximum likelihood approach to identify highly heritable components of a complex disease as a function of multiple clinical variables.

Educating patients on the influenza vaccination is an important goal for health care providers. It fosters a working relationship between provider and patient and allows patients to make an informed decision on their health care needs. The percentage of individuals who receive the influenza vaccine in the United States has been consistently below goals set by the committee for Healthy People 2020. This DNP scholarly project aimed to determine whether the introduction of education was effective at increasing individuals’ choice to vaccinate against the influenza virus among college campus students. The study was a non-experimental, non-randomized control trial that utilized …

Why Rectified Power (Repu) Activation Functions Are Efficient In Deep Learning: A Theoretical Explanation, Laxman Bokati, Vladik Kreinovich, Joseph Baca, Natasha Rovelli
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
At present, the most efficient machine learning techniques is deep learning, with neurons using Rectified Linear (ReLU) activation function s(z) = max(0,z), in many cases, the use of Rectified Power (RePU) activation functions (s(z))^p -- for some p -- leads to better results. In this paper, we explain these results by proving that RePU functions (or their "leaky" versions) are optimal with respect that all reasonable optimality criteria.

Derivation And Analysis Of A Discrete Predator–Prey Model, Sabrina H. Streipert, Gail S.K. Wolkowicz, Martin Bohner
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We derive a discrete predator–prey model from first principles, assuming that the prey population grows to carrying capacity in the absence of predators and that the predator population requires prey in order to grow. The proposed derivation method exploits a technique known from economics that describes the relationship between continuous and discrete compounding of bonds. We extend standard phase plane analysis by introducing the next iterate root-curve associated with the nontrivial prey nullcline. Using this curve in combination with the nullclines and direction field, we show that the prey-only equilibrium is globally asymptotic stability if the prey consumption-energy rate of …
