This thesis project aims to explore ordinary stories told through the graphic narrative. The goal is to understand what intrigues us about ordinary stories and what is gained through the use of comics form to tell these stories. The project portion of the thesis consists of a website showcasing comics based on narratives told by students at the University of South Carolina. The research portion uses existing literature, as well as reflections from the creation of the project, to answer the above questions. In the end, I found that we are drawn to ordinary stories through the process of identification, …

Envisioning Telehealth Beyond The Pandemic: A Federally Qualified Health Center’S Inquiry Toward Sustainable Telehealth Programs, Krista Zampacorta

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

There has been a growing interest in telehealth, as the practice has shown to alleviate barriers and improve healthcare access. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, organizations have deployed prompt integration of telehealth services to slow the spread of the virus. This spurred widespread adoption of telehealth. In addition, the pandemic evoked stable interest in telehealth among patients, healthcare professionals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). Chestnut Health Systems, an FQHC operating in the Midwest, deployed an Illinois State University Stevenson Center Fellow to investigate how the organization may deploy larger-scale efforts and contingency plans into the care of patients during …

This research responds to calls to further our understanding of exhibitions in the library context (Rogatchevskaia, 2018; Fouracre, 2015) by exploring the significance of a commemorative exhibition staged in a public library. Employing a qualitative methodology, it centres on the ‘Goodbye Dublin: The War of Independence in the City’ commemorative exhibition, staged by Dublin City Pearse Street Library, between August 14th and October 31st, 2019. The findings show that the commemorative nature of the exhibition appealed to a variety of new, lapsed and frequent library users, connecting with Irish and non-Irish residents, as well as tourists visiting …

Broad Spectrum Artificial Light At Night Increases The Conspicuousness Of Camouflaged Prey, Oak Mcmahon, Tim Smyth, Thomas W. Davies

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

1. The growing global prevalence of energy efficient broad spectrum lighting threatens to disrupt an array of visually guided ecological processes. Broad spectrum lighting likely better enables the discrimination of colour, yet it is potential to increase the conspicuousness of camouflaged prey at night remains little explored.2. Using a well-established visual model, we quantified the impacts of four spectrally distinct narrow and broad spectrum lighting technologies on the conspicuousness of three different polymorphic colour variations of intertidal littorinid snail, as viewed by three model predators.3. Modern broad spectrum lighting technologies increased the conspicuousness of prey compared to 20th-century narrow spectrum …

Stereo Correspondence Using Probabilistic Graphical Models For 3d Reconstruction, Hanieh Shabanian Mar 2022

Stereo Correspondence Using Probabilistic Graphical Models For 3d Reconstruction, Hanieh Shabanian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The 3D architecture of an object or of a scene can be estimated non-invasively from estimates of dense geometrical correspondences among two (stereo) or more views (2D projections) of the scene. Establishing dense correspondences among geometrical coordinates of multiple views (lower-dimensional projections) is an ill-posed problem due to scene occlusion. In addition, larger scene extents with smoother texture characteristics and differences in scene illumination among the multiple views/observers are sources of difficulties in disparity estimation. A successful strategy for improving the accuracy of the disparity estimates is to utilize spatial dependencies of the scene characteristics as well as of the …

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: László Moholy-Nagy And The Photobook, Sarah Hill

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

In this paper with a corresponding visual exhibition, I will examine the Hungarian modern artist László Moholy-Nagy's 1925 photobook Malerei Fotografie Film (Painting Photography Film) and his optical theories about how technology can impact human perception of time and motion. I will also investigate Moholy-Nagy's influence on other important photobooks of the era, such as Franz Roh and Jan Tschichold's Photo Eye: 76 Photos of the Time, and the important 1929 Film und Foto (Film and Photography) exhibition, known as FiFo, in Stuttgart, Germany. I will draw particularly on Pepper Stetler's 2015 book Stop Reading! Look! Modern Vision …

Telerounding is slated to become an important avenue for future healthcare practice. As utilization of telerounding is increasing, a review of the literature is necessary to distill themes and identify critical considerations for the implementation of telerounding. We provide evidence of the utility of telerounding and considerations to support its implementation in future healthcare practice based on a scoping review.

Method: We collected articles from nine scientific databases from the earliest dated available articles to August 2020. We identified whether each article centered on telerounding policies, regulations, or practice. We also organized information from each article and sorted themes into …

Rhizomatic Encounters With Inter/Transmedia Art: A Pedagogy For Learning And Teaching Experiential Contemporary Art, Lilly Lu, Hung-Min Chang

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

Teaching and learning through contemporary art has gained validity as a powerful and effective pedagogy in contemporary art education practice. In this article, we highlight characteristics of contemporary art and rhizomatic learning theory, and then we propose a pedagogical model that combines them for teaching and learning through experiential contemporary art. We also explain how to implement this model by showing examples of students’ rhizomatic encounters with inter/transmedia art created by Taiwanese artist teams. As the artworks offered present moments as sites of learning or places in process, students were triggered by the intersection of sounds and visuals and …

Business-Centered Versus Socially Responsible Corporate Diversity Communication. An Assessment Of Stakeholder (Dis) Agreement On Twitter, Roxana Maiorescu

Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators

This study assessed the business-centered and CSR-centered diversity communication of five American corporations along with the ensuing responses on the microblogging platform Twitter. The present analysis contributes to the literature on online diversity communication and public relations. The results revealed that companies that had long-term consistency in approaching diversity as CSR received more agreeable responses than those that made swift changes in the aftermath of increased pressure from activist groups. In addition, companies that communicated to a greater degree about the impact of diversity on the bottom line engendered higher user agreement than those who discussed diversity primarily from a …

Investigating Collaboration In Software Reverse Engineering, Allison M. Wong Mar 2022

Investigating Collaboration In Software Reverse Engineering, Allison M. Wong

Theses and Dissertations

Reverse engineering (RE) is a rigorous process of exploration and analysis to support software design recovery and exploit development. The process is often conducted in teams to divide the workload and take full advantage of engineers' individual expertise and strengths. Collaboration in RE requires versatile and reliable tools that can match the environment's unpredictable and fluid nature. While studies on collaborative software development have indicated common best practices and implementations, similar standards have not been explored in reverse engineering. This research conducts semi-structured interviews with reverse engineering experts to understand their needs and solutions while working in a team. The …

Design Demand Trend Acquisition Method Based On Short Text Mining Of User Comments In Shopping Websites, Zhiyong Xiong, Zhaoxiong Yan, Huanan Yao, Shangsong Liang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

In order to facilitate designers to explore the market demand trend of laptops and to establish a better “network users-market feedback mechanism”, we propose a design and research method of a short text mining tool based on the K-means clustering algorithm and Kano mode. An improved short text clustering algorithm is used to extract the design elements of laptops. Based on the traditional questionnaire, we extract the user’s attention factors, score the emotional tendency, and analyze the user’s needs based on the Kano model. Then, we select 10 laptops, process them by the improved algorithm, cluster the evaluation words and …

The Puppy In The Polka Dot Pajamas: A Multimedia Approach To Children's Literature, Grace Phillips

Honors Projects

In a world that seemingly becomes crueler by the day, some topics are not handled with the tact they require and deserve. Issues of bullying and self-expression can often evoke undesirable emotions when discussed. Although it may be difficult to achieve, every child deserves to grow up in a world free of bullying that promotes authentic self-expression. To do my part – however minor it may be – in fostering a more accepting community, I used this project as an opportunity to create a story that shared anti-bullying messaging in a suitable and enjoyable manner for children.

Therapeutic Processes In Clinical Interventions : A View Of Qualitative Methodological Approaches, Jennifer Denis, Marc Tocquet, François Guillemette, Stephan Hendrick Feb 2022

Therapeutic Processes In Clinical Interventions : A View Of Qualitative Methodological Approaches, Jennifer Denis, Marc Tocquet, François Guillemette, Stephan Hendrick

The Qualitative Report

This article examines several qualitative methods to capture and analyze processes in therapeutic and clinical interventions. The study of therapeutic processes provides an understanding of what leads to changes in clinical interventions. This is a goal of any therapeutic intervention. This interest should allow us to try to identify what the therapists do and think they are doing, how they do it, how they think about their interventions, and what happens during the session that might explain changes. These types of studies require that researchers provide clarifications about their epistemological and methodological choices. To meet that requirement, we propose to …

The Digital Sabbath And The Digital Distraction: Arts-Based Research Methods For New Audiences, Lisa F. Paris, Julia Morris, John Bailey Feb 2022

The Digital Sabbath And The Digital Distraction: Arts-Based Research Methods For New Audiences, Lisa F. Paris, Julia Morris, John Bailey

The Qualitative Report

Despite the known affordances of Arts-Based Research Practice within the international education environment, its use remains relatively uncommon in Western Australia. The reasons for this are likely the contested nature of quality criteria by which Arts-Based Practice is evaluated as well as the challenges as well associated with the dissemination of research findings. Mixed-methods research is increasingly recognised as an appropriate and practical approach for education phenomena, and within this domain, inquiry that combines traditional qualitative and arts-based strategies offers the education researcher advantages that are not readily available through other approaches. As professional artists and researchers we share our …

Women’S Sexual Health Rights In Egypt, Mira Ayman Feb 2022

Women’S Sexual Health Rights In Egypt, Mira Ayman

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Egyptian youth makes up 60% of the Egyptian population. Accessing proper reproductive health information still continues to be one of the main issues that the youth in Egypt faces, especially the unmarried fragment. This situation is largely due to religious conservatism. Because this issue remains a taboo, information on STI’s, FGM, contraception, sexual consent and other sexual health-related issues remain very limited. Private hospitals and clinics in Egypt do not offer youth-friendly services and only focuses on activities that would generate income (antenatal care and delivery). The lack of knowledge leads curious young adults to refer to online sources …
