Male And Female Interactions: A Multimodal Analysis Of Shonen Manga, Alexandria Perez Feb 2022

Male And Female Interactions: A Multimodal Analysis Of Shonen Manga, Alexandria Perez

The Montana English Journal

A qualitative multimodal content analysis of popular manga examined how female and male character interactions represented gender roles. An analytical tool was developed using multimodal, semiotic, social semiotic, gender, and feminist theories to understand representations of males and females in this popular media. This study showed that traditional gender norms are still present in manga, but there are some that break stereotypes. Also, in using both textual and visual elements to interpret multimodal texts, understanding of character interactions were enhanced because the intermodal interactions created new meaning. Implications suggest positive outlooks for manga being used as an educational tool by …

Picturing Pedagogy: Images, Teaching, And Development, Jeremy Baskin, Sundhya Pahuja

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Images are powerful. They shape how we see and understand the world and, in the process, challenge (or reinforce) our assumptions and perspectives. The images we use in the classroom are no exception, whether used passively as visual aids or as a “medium through which active learning is energized.”1 In this article we embrace the “pictorial turn” in university teaching and reflect on the use of images when teaching “development.”2 Development is an area that typically attracts students with an internationalist orientation and who seek to make a positive change in the world. Yet the concept of development is fraught …

The Effectiveness Of Participation In Upgrading Architectural Designing Concept Of Public Parks (Case Study: Minya City Public Park (Corniche)), Yasser Mohamed Salah Almagraby, Abdullah Mossa Y. Alzahrani, Rofaida Mohy Eldeen El Attar

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Egypt’s2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development included an emphasis on ensuring responsive, comprehensive, participatory, and representative decisions at all levels. It was noted that in the local context, there is no clear vision or mechanisms for the participatory process to support sustainable development through planning, designing, management, and maintenance of open urban projects such as public parks. Therefore, the research conducted a theoretical study to identify the concept of community participation and to clarify the psychological, functional, social, and economic aims of participation process. The research dealt with an analytical study of some urban spaces in the global context, which dealt …

Exploring Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives: Gender And Gender Representation Across Human Protagonists In Picture Books, Taraneh Matloob Haghanikar, Shan Jiang, Sara Tomek, Lisa M. Hooper Feb 2022

Exploring Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives: Gender And Gender Representation Across Human Protagonists In Picture Books, Taraneh Matloob Haghanikar, Shan Jiang, Sara Tomek, Lisa M. Hooper

Faculty Publications

Gender is ever present in education preparation, school materials, curriculum, and school systems. To improve our knowledge about different facets of gender and the extent to which the depiction of gender has changed over time in picture books, there is a need to dig beneath the surface of questions about gender representation in picture books. Given that in-service teachers have proximity to approximately 75 million K-12 students, how in-service teachers think about gender, gender representation, and their own experiences with gender socialization have important implications on how K-12 students think, act, and feel about gender. In this study, we focused …

Creating An Interdisciplinary Curriculum Within The Undergraduate Arts And Sciences Through Agar Art, Julie Torruellas Garcia, Kandy Lopez, Véronique Côté, Katie E. Crump Jan 2022

Creating An Interdisciplinary Curriculum Within The Undergraduate Arts And Sciences Through Agar Art, Julie Torruellas Garcia, Kandy Lopez, Véronique Côté, Katie E. Crump

Biology Faculty Articles

Evidence-based studies on the benefits of integrating STEM into the arts are limited; however, some suggest that it can lead to improved scientific literacy and new approaches for artistic scholarship. Unfortunately, undergraduate education often creates disciplinary silos where the two are not integrated. Here, we discuss a unique collaboration between professors in the art and biology departments. Our goal was to integrate science into art courses using an agar art activity. We hypothesized that art students could effectively learn microbiology laboratory techniques and use them as novel tools for artistic practice. The activity was integrated into two to four sessions …

The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr. Jan 2022

The Fabc Vision Of Inculturation And The Pedagogical Renewal Of Catechesis In The Philippines, William M. Parde Jr.

Loyola Papers

Advocating the crafting of inculturated catechisms, this paper calls for a pedagogy of faith built not from the desks of catechetical authorities but from the ground. In this pedagogical renewal, necessitated by changing times and circumstances, the paper finds a rallying point and guiding principle in the FABC’s call for inculturation understood as “dialogue.” At the same time, it identifies a number of ongoing challenges that hinder this process, including notions and methodologies of inculturation that can be unilateral and amount to a kind of imposition on the receiving culture, which possesses its own customs and practices. The paper then …

Modern Tarot Deck, Caitlyn Childress Jan 2022

Modern Tarot Deck, Caitlyn Childress

Theses

The Original Rider-Waite tarot deck has since been reimagined through numerous tarot decks with the intention of modernization and implementing personal interpretations. Through varying versions of the monumentally historical deck, the Major Arcana, a vital part of the traditional tarot deck, has transformed meaning through replacements and substitutions of visual design elements. Existing modern adaptations of the Original Rider-Waite deck have not addressed race and gender perspectives native to the original deck. I recreated the Major Arcana twice, with both groups of cards tailored towards the same user group with ease, learning, traditional meanings, and experience in mind. After creating …

Chief Loophole Officer Or Chief Legal Officer: Inside Lehman Brothers—A Film Case Study About Corporate And Legal Ethics, Garrick Apollon

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

This Article discusses the continuing legal education (CLE) visual advocacy documentary-style program, which Garrick Apollon (author of this Article) researched and developed. The case study for this CLE documentary-style program is the film Inside Lehman Brothers—a documentary film by Jennifer Deschamps which chronicles the story of the Lehman whistleblowers. The film presents Mathew Lee, former senior vice president overseeing Lehman’s global balance sheet; Oliver Budde, former in-house counsel (associate general counsel) of the Lehman Brothers; and the racialized female mid-tier manager whistleblowers, who all paid a steep price in the 2008 American subprime mortgage crisis, while many of the …

Teaching Through A Polyvagal Lens: Using The Science Of Safety To Co-Regulate In The Classroom, Anna Isolde Dahlen Jan 2022

Teaching Through A Polyvagal Lens: Using The Science Of Safety To Co-Regulate In The Classroom, Anna Isolde Dahlen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, social responses to environments are mediated by the limbic system either by vagal input or vagal withdrawal (Mulkey & Du Plessis, 2019). The nervous system preconsciously perceives threats through a process termed neuroception. The Polyvagal Theory provides insight about how the nervous system continuously assesses risk and safety cues that influence behavioral and physiological states (Porges, 2015). Co-regulation provides the neural state that supports the establishment of trusting relationships. Humans are always looking for safety cues and by design are motivated to develop relationships to co- regulate. Incorporating the science of safety in educational …

Examining Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions And Understanding Of Visual Literacy Instruction, Lin Gou, Daibao Guo, Eun Hye Son Jan 2022

Examining Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions And Understanding Of Visual Literacy Instruction, Lin Gou, Daibao Guo, Eun Hye Son

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite the importance of promoting visual literacy in content instruction, there is scant research investigating pre-service teachers’ perceptions and understandings of visual literacy instruction. To fill these research gaps, we developed a unit in a literacy methods course that integrated visual literacy and social studies instruction for preservice teachers. In this qualitative study, we analyzed 65 elementary and secondary pre-service teachers’ reflections after the unit. Findings revealed that a majority of pre-service teachers developed a positive attitude toward visual literacy (instruction), demonstrated better understanding of visual displays (ViDis) and visual literacy skills, and recognized the advantages of using ViDis for …

Kids, Culture, And Queerness: The Progression Of Lgbtq+ Representation In Children's Media, Sarah Stevens Jan 2022

Kids, Culture, And Queerness: The Progression Of Lgbtq+ Representation In Children's Media, Sarah Stevens

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Historically, popular media has functioned as a window into society’s ever evolving idea of normalcy. Children’s popular media, which contains elements of both entertainment and didacticism, is further burdened with the responsibility of influencing the perspectives of upcoming generations. This truth is particularly salient for the LGBTQ+ community, who have faced consistent misrepresentation or utter erasure from children’s media in the recent past. While there have been marked improvements in both the quality and quantity of queer representation in children’s media since 2015’s Obergefell v. Hodges case, there is still a significant need to acknowledge intersectional queerness and queer gender …

A Pilot Study: An Evaluation Of Accessibility Of Resources For Parents Of D/Deaf/Hoh Children In Ky/Tn, Amara Danturthi

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Most parents of d/Deaf/Hoh children are not Deaf, making it imperative for easy access to diverse strategies to ensure smooth communication between them and their child. Parents make the paramount decision of what their child’s first language should be, therefore, access to current information on communication strategies is crucial in this journey. Many families fall on resources sometimes from sources in different formats to understand what may work best for them. The accessibility and availability of these resources are a crucial component in the parent’s decision-making process. Due to the unique dynamics between hearing parents and d/Deaf/Hoh children, this pilot …

A Multidisciplinary Collaboration Between Graphic Design And Physics Classes Responding To Covid-19, Szilvia Kadas, Eric M. Edlund

The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE

Students from graphic design and physics classes at SUNY Cortland collaborated during the spring semester of 2020 on a multidisciplinary project related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In these collaborations, the students’ individual contributions were part of a larger project that required a diverse skill set, through which students learned how different skills can complement their own disciplines. The graphic design and physics instructors applied a project-based learning philosophy applying the Common Problem Pedagogy (CPP) framework to construct student-teams composed of both disciplines. This project explored how coordinated social actions can allow the public to exercise control in uncertain times. Students …
