Characterizing And Predicting Human Visual Perception Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Gestures, Paul Fletcher Apr 2022

Characterizing And Predicting Human Visual Perception Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Gestures, Paul Fletcher

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being used in public domains and hazardous environments where effective communication strategies are critical. UAV gesture techniques have been shown to communicate meaning to human observers and may be ideal in contexts that require lightweight systems such as unmanned aerial flight, however, this work may be limited to an idealized range of viewer perspectives. As gesture is a visual communication technique it is necessary to consider how the perception of a robot gesture may suffer from obfuscation or self-occlusion from some viewpoints. This thesis presents the results of three online user-studies that examine participants’ ability …

Tell It Slant: Investigating The Engagement, Discourse, And Popularity Of Data Visualization In Online Communities, Emma Baker Apr 2022

Tell It Slant: Investigating The Engagement, Discourse, And Popularity Of Data Visualization In Online Communities, Emma Baker

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Data visualizations are increasingly accessible to people online, often to non-specialized audiences. However, what we know about how people make sense of data and engage with the visualized content is typically limited to observations from controlled user studies, sometimes with highly-specialized participants. As a result, there is a limited vocabulary to describe how visualizations as a technique of information sharing permeate organic communities. This thesis investigates how data visualization systems infiltrate online social settings and characterizes the conditions under which users engage or do not engage with them. We captured conversations on Reddit from March 2, 2021 to December 31, …

Serving As A Dramaturg To On Campus Productions: The Development And Execution Of Thea 6910: A Dramaturgy Of Three Plays, Megan Kimball

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In the Fall of 2021, I served as the dramaturge for the Loyola Marymount campus productions of Anna Deavere's Smiths, "Twilight Los Angeles," Brandon Jacob Jenkins, "Everybody "and Melanie Marnich's "These Shining Lives." One can't ignore the distinct and separate story designs of these plays. "Twilight Los Angeles" is a verbatim theatre style, with an arrangement of monologues. "Everybody" is a modern-day morality play with a lottery. "These shining lives" is a period piece set as a docudrama. My process for this thesis will be a reflective and experiential study on performing the role of the dramaturg for these three …

Is This A Line? Visual Literacy, Visual Inquiry, And Visual Communication In The Elementary School Years, Connie J. Broadbent Apr 2022

Is This A Line? Visual Literacy, Visual Inquiry, And Visual Communication In The Elementary School Years, Connie J. Broadbent

Theses and Dissertations

As a mother and public elementary school art teacher, I recognize the impact images have in the lives of children. Our culture is image rich and often image saturated. I believe I can do more to prepare my students to become discerning consumers and creators of images. Art teachers are uniquely qualified to teach visual literacy and visual inquiry. If grade school children can be taught to think more deeply and critically about their visual world, they will be better prepared for responding to it in a healthy, empowering way. This research describes an elementary school curriculum based on teaching …

Are Infographics Worth It?: An Assessment Of Information Retention In Relation To Information Embedded In Infographics, Z. Sylvia Yang, Jessica A. Abbazio

Library Faculty Publications

Infographics are an effective means to communicate with audiences, draw attention, and make concepts digestible in a quick and straightforward way. This study explores students’ opinions on infographics used in library instruction, and provides quantitative data to help librarians determine whether these tools will help students engage with text and retain key concepts. Based on research conducted with undergraduate music students at two universities, DePauw University and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, this paper examines how students understand and interact with content embedded in infographics, and measures retention of information presented in either plain-text or infographic form.

Transforming Creativity Skills Into Creative Habits, Bethlem Clavijo Boronat, Halim Choueiry Apr 2022

Transforming Creativity Skills Into Creative Habits, Bethlem Clavijo Boronat, Halim Choueiry

Arab Economic and Business Journal

In a constantly changing and uncertain word, the creative capability is a key skill, not only for professional and personal success, but for survival. Educational systems have traditionally treated creativity as a marginal component of educational programs and, when it has been taught, it has been done in the focus of tools and techniques more than on building a solid creative base for students. This paper analyses the situation of the present-day creativity teaching in Higher Education and determines the key capabilities that allow the students to build a solid creative personality. After that, the paper offers a range of …

Emerging Trends: Scenic Design Beyond The Stage, Kellie N. Murphy Apr 2022

Emerging Trends: Scenic Design Beyond The Stage, Kellie N. Murphy

LSU Master's Theses

The role of a scenic designer is so exciting but opportunities to design can fluctuate a bit. While the work is rewarding, the career itself can be much like a gig at times. Then when you factor in a major event such as a global pandemic, where does this leave a scenic designer in terms of employment and livelihood? Are there other possibilities for work with a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design? How do we continue to tell stories while providing for ourselves? Have artists considered how these skills are transferrable to other allied fields?

As a scenic …

Applied Behavior Analysis Services In Public Schools, Bridget Soraghan Apr 2022

Applied Behavior Analysis Services In Public Schools, Bridget Soraghan

Community Engagement Student Work

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have a very different educational experience than their peers. The process of providing more resources can be beneficial if insurance plans can help families with the cost and coverage. Research findings explain how more resources can help lower socioeconomic families with earlier diagnoses of ASD in their children. Insurance plans and different policies can provide more educational opportunities for those children. Having more coverage on insurance plans will allow more families to seek Applied Behavior Analysis therapy to work with Behavior Technicians. Public school districts can make opportunities available for non-neurotypical students by providing …

Mammalian Facial Muscles: Their Evolution, Function, Diversity, & Study Through Comparative Methods, Juri Ann Miyamae Apr 2022

Mammalian Facial Muscles: Their Evolution, Function, Diversity, & Study Through Comparative Methods, Juri Ann Miyamae

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Within the great diversity of living vertebrates, mammals alone are distinguished by the presence of facial muscles. These delicate sheets of muscle are distributed in superficial layers of the face and neck and are responsible for critical everyday functions such as communication, feeding, and active gathering of sensory information. Despite the importance of this anatomical system in the lives of mammals, they have seldom been the focus of investigation, especially within an evolutionary context. The goal of this PhD dissertation is to explore facial muscles as a whole and integrated anatomical system with a dynamic evolutionary history and functional relevance …

Visual Modernity And The Industrial Subterranean, 1826 - 1941, Shirlynn Sham Apr 2022

Visual Modernity And The Industrial Subterranean, 1826 - 1941, Shirlynn Sham

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

AbstractVisual Modernity and the Industrial Subterranean, 1826 – 1941 Shirlynn Sham 2022 This dissertation argues that the technological mastery of the subterranean realm in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is crucial to the evolution of visual modernity. Throughout this period of rapid infrastructural modernization, major underground public works projects radically transformed the urban fabric of cities in the trans-Atlantic world, initially through widespread excavations that visibly tore up the metropolitan landscape, and later through the sleek new velocities of the railway era. A dominant issue that attended this period of urban renovation was visual legibility: how did engineers, inventors and …

Seeing Slavery, Lulu Hamissou Apr 2022

Seeing Slavery, Lulu Hamissou

Theses

This paper examines the resilience of Laura Clark, Carrie Davis, and Delia Garlic, three formerly enslaved women from Alabama whose memories and experiences during enslavement were part of a large slave narrative project called Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers’ Project, 1936 to 1938. The design exhibition, Seeing Slavery, visually communicates and portrays the accounts and portraits of the three women. Printed and embroidered fabrics visually communicate the narrative stories of these women, while their portraits are made from screen printed acrylic glass.

Following an introduction, a literature review details the history of the three slave …

Differentiated Instruction In A General Children’S Ministry Curriculum: Evaluating Discipleship In An Inclusive Classrooom, Jennifer E. Pelissero

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perception children’s pastors have in their ability to provide a comprehensive instructional program for children with special needs. The quantitative study utilized a survey research method to address three research questions. The survey instrument was distributed electronically to children’s pastors nationwide to identify instructional and environmental elements required to provide a comprehensive instructional program within the ministry setting for children with special needs. In an effort to further research why children with special needs do not regularly attend religious worship services, this research study focused on elements that create the greatest …
