Pandemic As Portal: Disrupting The Violence Of Epistemicide In Teacher Education, Ramon Vasquez Nov 2022

Pandemic As Portal: Disrupting The Violence Of Epistemicide In Teacher Education, Ramon Vasquez

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Epistemicide involves more than just the accidental displacement of different knowledges. By its very nature, epistemicide involves the intentional silencing, devaluing, and violent destruction of knowledge systems (Mignolo, 2007). While much has been written about radically altering education by including other knowledge in schools, what this entails within the context of teacher education methods courses, particularly during the pandemic, has received less attention. This paper examines and discusses what creating another teacher education might involve by probing some of the spaces and openings for epistemic disobedience exposed and made visible during the pandemic. My conceptualization of another teacher education simultaneously …

High-Metabolism Infrastructure And The Scrap Industry In Urban China, Adam Liebman Nov 2022

High-Metabolism Infrastructure And The Scrap Industry In Urban China, Adam Liebman

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

Abstract

Rapid urbanization in 21st-century China has been fraught with contested demolition, overdevelopment and shoddy infrastructure with short lifespans. By viewing this infrastructure as having “high metabolism” and examining the urban scrap trade that is fuelled by its material outputs, this article challenges a common assumption that such a form of urbanization is merely wasteful and problematic. Crucially, such urbanization also puts rural migrants and scrap into motion in a way that helps to reproduce its form. This occurs by generating socio-material nodes of scrap trading wherein migrants make the most of temporarily stable situations with entrepreneurialism. The nodes are …

The Intersection Of Digital Communication & Non-Profit Organizations, Aliyah Burton

Senior Honors Theses

Non-profit organizations are actively addressing prevalent issues in society, seeking to benefit the public and those in need through various forms of intervention and programming. Non-profits have unique leadership and culture, requiring models of communication that fit these unique qualities. Communication is vital to the success of non-profits, particularly in a digital age. This thesis synthesizes the current research on non-profit culture and leadership with data on donor trends, online giving, social media practices, and more points of interest for non-profits when it comes to digital communication. Additionally, a connection is made between strong digital communication strategies and ongoing donor …

Employability-Related Activities Beyond The Curriculum: How Participation And Impact Vary Across Diverse Student Cohorts, Denise Jackson, Bonnie Amelia Dean

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Higher education is increasingly concerned withproviding students with experiences that enhance employability. Sitting outsidethe curriculum, extra- or co-curricular activities that focus on career development, leadership, service or recognition can lead to positive employability andemployment outcomes. The extent to which different student groups have accessto and participate in these employability-related activities (ERAs) isunderexplored, along with their relative gains in the labour market. Thisresearch surveyed 84,000 graduates in Australia on their participation invarious activity types and the impact on their sense of preparedness for workand labour force outcomes. Findings demonstrate that over one-half ofrespondents participated in an ERA with groups tending to favour …

The Racial Pandemic: Positive Behavior Intervention Support As An Asymptomatic Carrier Of Racism, Jade Calais, Matthew Green Nov 2022

The Racial Pandemic: Positive Behavior Intervention Support As An Asymptomatic Carrier Of Racism, Jade Calais, Matthew Green

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

In an attempt to close the discipline gap, school systems have replaced traditional exclusionary practices with alternative interventions such as Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). PBIS, as an alternative to exclusionary discipline practices, does little to help historically oppressed youth, specifically, because it denies the presence and value of race. This attempt to be race-neutral results in racist discipline outcomes. PBIS presents harmful outcomes for early childhood and elementary-aged children, as it normalizes children to the disciplinary structures that result in high school dropouts and other negative outcomes for older youth. Exploring this program aids in understanding the limitations of …

The Ecosystem Of Racial Inequalities In Discipline In Early Childhood Education, Alexandra Aylward, Rachel Garver, Catherine Kramarczuk Voulgarides, Christine Hodgson Nov 2022

The Ecosystem Of Racial Inequalities In Discipline In Early Childhood Education, Alexandra Aylward, Rachel Garver, Catherine Kramarczuk Voulgarides, Christine Hodgson

Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education

Preschool children are suspended and expelled at a rate greater than school-aged youth, and exclusionary discipline practices are further inequitable across racial and ethnic groups. Denied the documented benefits of early childhood education, Black students are disproportionately excluded from US educational institutions beginning in early childhood, effectively preserving and reproducing racial inequities. Black students, especially boys, are the most likely to lose access to schooling due to exclusionary discipline. The disparities are dehumanizing and detrimental to students’ opportunities to learn, as early educational experiences greatly influence development and future outcomes. Although there is a plethora of evidence concerning the significant …

A Tale Of Three Cities: Medical Marijuana, Activism, And Local Regulation In California, Thomas Heddleston Nov 2022

A Tale Of Three Cities: Medical Marijuana, Activism, And Local Regulation In California, Thomas Heddleston

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This article examines important differences taken by California’s three largest metropolitan areas to regulating medical cannabis dispensaries and the role activists and organizations play in shaping regulatory practices. In the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego, medical marijuana activists and providers have faced vastly different “political opportunity structures.” I operationalize political opportunity structures as composed of district attorney policies, police department policies, city initiatives and resolutions, the presence or absence of dispensary regulations, and the presence or absence of city level task forces or commissions. Activists use ballot initiatives, lobbying, civil disobedience, protests, and referenda to further …

Women In The Marijuana Industry, Karen August Nov 2022

Women In The Marijuana Industry, Karen August

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This paper explores the experiences of women involved with rural marijuana production in Northern California. Using grounded theory analysis, my research explores patterns and trends in the daily lives of women participants in the growing community. Multiple dimensions are explored, highlighting divisions of labor, gender, social networking, and elements of power and class. My research aims to provide a rich and highly textured portrait of various women as they operate from different positions within a legally ambiguous economy. Though the federal government continues to judge marijuana cultivation and distribution to be illegal, the marijuana industry thrives in the progressively tolerant …

The Trouble With Mary Jane’S Gender, Wendy Chapkis

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This essay explores some of the gendered dimensions of contemporary cannabis politics and culture from the perspective of a long-time sexuality and gender scholar recently migrated into the world of drug policy reform. My essay suggests that inattention to gendered stereotypes and inequalities creates obstacles to women’s full participation in drug policy reform and complicates efforts to end marijuana prohibition in the U.S.

Small-Scale Marijuana Growing: Deviant Careers As Serious Leisure, Craig Boylstein, Scott R. Maggard Nov 2022

Small-Scale Marijuana Growing: Deviant Careers As Serious Leisure, Craig Boylstein, Scott R. Maggard

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Previous research on marijuana growers in the United States has primarily focused on those who have been incarcerated for the activity (Weisheit, 1990; 1998). These growers tend to produce large amounts of the product. It may be that large scale marijuana growers who have been arrested may differ in their reasons for growing, their style of growing and distributing and in how they view marijuana growing as an activity from different types of growers; namely small-scale, indoor hydroponic growers who grow primarily for personal use and enjoyment. Our study analyzes one social network of marijuana growers in central and northern …

Patients And Caregivers Report Using Medical Marijuana To Decrease Prescription Narcotics Use, David C. Peters Ii Nov 2022

Patients And Caregivers Report Using Medical Marijuana To Decrease Prescription Narcotics Use, David C. Peters Ii

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In depth qualitative interview data were collected from medical marijuana patients and knowledgeable producers in Michigan about their perceptions and observations on the medical use of marijuana. Patients consistently reported using marijuana to substitute or wean off prescription drugs. All patients and producers who were taking opiate pain killers claimed they reduced overall drug use, especially opiates, by using medical marijuana. Patients and caregivers also claimed medical marijuana was preferred over opiates, eased withdrawal from opiates, and in some cases was perceived as more effective at relieving pain.

Inside The Gate: Insiders’ Perspectives On Marijuana As A Gateway Drug, Rashi K. Shukla Nov 2022

Inside The Gate: Insiders’ Perspectives On Marijuana As A Gateway Drug, Rashi K. Shukla

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Marijuana is often referred to as a gateway drug due to its placement in the stage-like progression of drug use (Kandel, 2002; Zimmer & Morgan, 1997). This study examines the gateway drug concept from an insiders’ perspective. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 51 current and former users of marijuana. Data were collected between 2000 and 2002. Data on drug histories and perceptions about marijuana as a gateway drug were analyzed. While 80.3% (n = 41) of participants initiated their drug use experiences with alcohol or tobacco, one-third (n = 15) used an illicit drug other than marijuana prior to …

Challenges In Minimizing Teacher Authority While Facilitating A Student-Owned Activism Project, Nicholas Chagnon, Donna King Nov 2022

Challenges In Minimizing Teacher Authority While Facilitating A Student-Owned Activism Project, Nicholas Chagnon, Donna King

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Students who take critical sociology courses often report feeling discouraged about their ability to change large-scale social-structural problems. To redress this perceived lack of agency and control, we modified an upper-division sociology of popular culture course to include a studentowned activism project that would entail minimal teacher direction. In this paper we describe our efforts through two iterations of the activism project and reflect on the obstacles and suc- cesses of the project.

The Art Of Social Justice, Jennifer Miles, Laura Dawson Nov 2022

The Art Of Social Justice, Jennifer Miles, Laura Dawson

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

As this HJSR special issue on social justice unfolded, it became clear to the editorial team that this publication would be incomplete without addressing the well-documented role of art in social justice movements. We asked two of our managing editors, Jennifer Miles and Laura Dawson, to research and write about this area of social action. They interviewed two artists, a spoken word performer and a visual artist, both of whom understand their art as part of larger social justice projects. These artists raise awareness, highlight obstacles and avenues for change, and create space for solidarity and sanctuary. The following montage …

Predictors Of College Student Support Toward Colin Kaepernick’S National Anthem Protests, Brooke Coursen, Nicole Peiffer, Sakira Coleman, Philip Lucius

VA Engage Journal

Racial discrimination and inequality have perpetuated within the U.S. since its inception. In 2016, Colin Kaepernick initiated the national anthem protests to oppose the oppression of people of color in America. This study was developed in 2018 to identify social determinants of health underlying discriminatory beliefs and behaviors. The objective was to investigate the impacts of college students’ race, gender, political ideology, socio-economic status [SES], NFL interest, patriotism, and general protest support on support for the national anthem protests. We administered paper-and-pencil surveys across locations on the James Madison University campus using a convenience sample. There were 408 participants included, …

Identifying An Analytical Framework To Assess The Determinants Of Ict Adoption In Libraries And Its Implications For Teaching And Learning During Insecurity, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The security situation in Nigeria, particularly in the country's North-West and North-Central Zones, has forced the closure of many educational institutions. Teaching and learning have become more erratic as a result of this. This issue has far-reaching repercussions for librarians and information specialists. Libraries have long been regarded and recognized by educational institutions for their contribution to high-quality teaching and learning. Several studies have found that information and communication technology (ICT) can improve teaching and learning by facilitating access to information. As a result, governments and school administrators have been working to promote the use of ICT in libraries to …

Print3d, A Service-Learning Project For Improving Visually Impaired Accessibility Through Educational 3d Printing, Oscar R. Lozano

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Well-executed service-learning projects are a high-value educational element. However, these projects commonly focus on overused topics and unbalanced executions which can produce the opposite effect to that desired when working with groups of people with functional diversity. PRINT3D is a service-learning project aimed at improving accessibility for people with visual disabilities while helping primary and secondary school students learn basic engineering skills through 3D design and printing. Under the support of the European Erasmus+ Programme, this project brought together nongovernmental organizations, teacher professional development centers, business enterprises, and educational centers to collaborate for two school years. The project activities aimed …
