DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from 54 cohorts (20 677 children) participating in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program from January 1, 1995, to January 1, 2022. Participant inclusion required at least …
Mindset Theory Relates To Attitudes About Prison And Parole Among College Students, Cassandra R. Petersen
Mindset Theory Relates To Attitudes About Prison And Parole Among College Students, Cassandra R. Petersen
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The maintenance of prosocial relationships has been strongly connected to criminal desistance among past offenders. The opinions held by the community shape the prejudice often encountered by those with a criminal record. To promote desistance, we must understand how criminals and their abilities are considered by the public. In this study, 69 college students were surveyed about the United States prison and parole system in conjunction with Dweck’s mindset theory. Along with explicit questions, an Implicit Associations Test (IAT) was employed to measure unconscious associations between mentality and punishment preference. The IAT revealed that traits of a growth mindset were …
Communication Apprehension In Romantic Relationships And Effects On Mental Health, Meg Mccoy
Communication Apprehension In Romantic Relationships And Effects On Mental Health, Meg Mccoy
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This study examines how and if university students’ communication apprehension (CA) within romantic relationships affects their mental health. Inspired by Communication Accommodation Theory, this researcher conducted both a survey and in-depth interviews with undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to test these relationships and further explore experiences of CA in romantic relationships. The findings of this study reveal that lower levels of CA are positively correlated with a healthier mental status, including overall mental health and self-esteem. In addition, the data indicates that participants do not experience CA except when it comes to sensitive subjects. Employing accommodative …
The Effects Of A Low Fodmap Diet On People With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Literature Review, Emily Stalder
The Effects Of A Low Fodmap Diet On People With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Literature Review, Emily Stalder
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal disorder around the world. There is no known etiology or cure for the disorder, which leaves researchers to develop coping mechanisms for this prevalent issue. A high percentage (10%-15%) of the general population, mostly in Western, industrialized areas, suffer from IBS. A low FODMAP diet (LFD) is something that has been gaining a following over the past 20 years, which has led to research on its ability to minimize symptoms of IBS. The purpose of this literature review is to see what current research has to offer on the LFD’s ability …

Lived Experiences Of Women In Collegiate Esports Leadership, Kim S. Johnson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
A leadership gender gap exists in politics, business, and higher education, and there appears to be one in collegiate esports. Researchers have conducted studies on some aspects of esports; however, we know little about women’s experiences leading collegiate esports programs. The purpose of this qualitative study - a descriptive (transcendental) phenomenology – was to explore and describe the essence of women’s lived experiences in leading collegiate varsity esports programs at higher education institutions. In-depth interviews were the research method. Seven women employed as collegiate varsity esports coaches or directors described their historical context, present experiences in the profession, and how …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study investigated the experiences of a purposive sample of eight Learning and Development executives to understand the circumstances leading to, as well as the experiences implementing Digital Business Simulation Games (DBSG) in a corporate learning environment, specifically related to the financial service industry. Their perception of the organizational needs, decision-making process of those involved, as well as the experience in design, development, and implementation may contribute to a better understanding of the circumstances within an organization where a DBSG would be an effective solution to achieve the development goals of learners within that organization. This study will …
Understanding Students' Experience With 1:1 Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning In A Mathematics Classroom, Oscar Antonio Perales Aguilera
Understanding Students' Experience With 1:1 Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning In A Mathematics Classroom, Oscar Antonio Perales Aguilera
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
There has been a move towards integrating educational technology into K-12 mathematics classrooms. This emphasis has been partly driven by policy, increases in technology resources available, and a need to engage students in their mathematical learning. Most studies on technology integration in mathematics education are focused on teachers’ perceptions or students’ academic achievement. However, we need to learn how students perceive their learning in this type of environment. This dissertation is a basic qualitative study aimed at understanding the experiences of students with 1:1 computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) in an Algebraic Reasoning classroom. The study used the mathematical software, Desmos, …
Clinical Nurse Educator Needs: A Mixed Methods Study Of Confidence To Perform Competencies In Clinical Nurse Educators, Sarah Ann Wallace
Clinical Nurse Educator Needs: A Mixed Methods Study Of Confidence To Perform Competencies In Clinical Nurse Educators, Sarah Ann Wallace
Dissertations
Clinical nurse educators oversee students in clinical practice settings to teach safe and effective patient care. Current national shortages require schools to utilize novice nurse educators to fill these roles. Clinical nurse educators enter academia with varying backgrounds, experiences, and educational preparations. Novice nurse educators might struggle with role ambiguity with increasing levels of stress during the transition process. Recent national competencies were created to clarify the clinical nurse educator role. This study explored clinical nurse educators’ perceived self-confidence in performing competencies through a mixed methods approach using the Clinical Nurse Educator Skill Acquisition Assessment (CNESAA) and interviews. Seventeen participants …

Exploring Teacher Self-Efficacy In Nurse Educators: A Mixed Method Study, Wendi Noelle Liverman
Dissertations
In the face of a rapidly changing healthcare environment and a nursing shortage, schools of nursing are pressed to produce higher numbers of fully prepared nurse graduates. In other disciplines, teacher self-efficacy has been linked to better student outcomes, faculty instructional methods, and student engagement. This construct has not been well studied in nursing education. This mixed methods study investigated how current faculty perceive their teacher self-efficacy as measured by the Self-Efficacy Towards Teaching Inventory-Nursing Education (SETTI-NE) survey and identified contributing factors, followed by interviews gathering qualitative data from nine faculty members of varying SETTI-NE scores as well as varying …
Investigating Nurses’ Career Choice Through The Social Congnitive Career Theory’S Self-Management Model, Tina Howard
Investigating Nurses’ Career Choice Through The Social Congnitive Career Theory’S Self-Management Model, Tina Howard
Dissertations
The United States is in a healthcare crisis. There is a substantial shortage of nurses (Buerhaus et al., 2017). Making matters worse is the nurse faculty shortage (Daw et al., 2018). As the population ages and uses more resources, there is a need for even more nurses. The aging population includes nursing faculty. The average age of a nurse faculty member is approximately ten years from retirement (Oermann et al., 2015). The exodus of nurses from the profession adds to the problem because the number of students graduating from nursing school already falls short. The crisis can become catastrophic if …

Is It My Job? How Emotions And Identity Development Drive White Senior Student Affairs Officers To Claim Responsibility For Creating Equity On Campus, Morgan J. Bradford Diaz
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore how emotions and identity development create pathways for White deans of students to understand their responsibility in fostering a campus community that is equitable for all. From the frameworks of emotional intelligence and White identity development, I illustrated the nature of the varying, often emotion-driven, work of deans of students on ever-increasingly diverse college campuses. Within a poststructuralist paradigm and narrative inquiry methodology, ten participants engaged in three scaffolded critical reflection methods confronting areas of privilege and cognitive dissonance. Narratives fostered a culmination of powerful metaphors and lived experiences of White deans …

It’S More Than Nursing: The Experiences Of Psychological Safety Of Pre-Licensure Nursing Students Who Identify As Black, Indigenous, And People Of Color, Melissa Marie Anozie
Dissertations
The healthcare environment mandates its staff are able to communicate freely and openly to provide high quality patient care leading to positive patient outcomes. As the largest healthcare profession and those who are at the bedside most often with patients, registered nurses play a vital role in ensuring these outcomes. As advocates for the most vulnerable, nurses must communicate often but before doing so, they must feel psychologically safe. Psychological safety is how one perceives the benefits, risks, and consequences of asking a question, sharing an opinion, reporting an error, or revealing one’s true self to others. It is a …

This study aims to examine the ways that fan accounts on social media foster community and fill the void of emotional engagement when the artist is not as active. It also looks at how fans’ parasocial relationships change when the subject of their emotional connection disappears. This study adds to previous research done on fandom, parasocial relationships, and social media. To perform this study, a close content analysis was done, focusing on one specific Harry Styles fan account on Twitter, @hsdaily. Two time periods were defined, one being a time of low activity from Harry Styles and one being high …
Vivienne Westwood And The Socio-Political Nature Of Punk, Ashley Rosato
Vivienne Westwood And The Socio-Political Nature Of Punk, Ashley Rosato
Honors College Theses
Punk fashion, which helped define the punk movement in the 1970s, has been ever changing as it adapts to modern times. Before it was the watered-down, mainstream mass-produced aesthetic that it is today, punk style was full of counterculture meaning and signs that communicated counter-hegemonic ideologies to the public. Vivienne Westwood, one of the contributors to early punk culture and the mother of British punk style, designed clothing that was central to the ethos of the early punk movement. Through a semiotic analysis of five of Westwood’s designs from the 1970s, this study aims to demonstrate how Westwood’s early punk …

The Role Of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi In The Formation Of Ukrainian National Identity, Iryna Krasnodemska
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article examines the main statehood ideas and views of the socio-political and Church figure, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi’s contribution to the struggle for the establishment of an independent, united Ukrainian state. The impact of the Metropolitan’s activity as the hierarch of the Greek Catholic Church on the Ukrainian national spiritual revival in Ukraine (at the end of the 19th to middle 20th century) is clarified as the solid foundation which was laid by his ecumenical ideas. The judgment of A. Sheptytskyi regarding the necessary prerequisites for building a strong, independent Ukraine, and his ideas about reforming state authorities, the Church, …

U.S. Hegemonic Control In Latin America: The 1973 Coup In Chile, Seth Wilbur
U.S. Hegemonic Control In Latin America: The 1973 Coup In Chile, Seth Wilbur
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On September 11, 1973, the Chilean armed forces staged a coup d’état against their democratically elected and first socialist president, Salvador Allende. The coup ended in Allende’s death and seventeen years of military dictatorship under the auspices of General Augusto Pinochet. Although seemingly a domestic affair, the United States executive branch under the leadership of President Richard Nixon played a significant role in facilitating the coup and it is unlikely the coup would have occurred without U.S. support. While contemporary sources still point to American fears over communist incursion in the western hemisphere as the principal reason for U.S. involvement …

Trauma-Informed Care In Nursing Curricula: Development Of A Simulation-Based Educational Framework To Guide Health Professions, Heather Guest
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Individuals of all ages, genders, social and ethnic backgrounds, and cultures suffer traumatic experiences. Trauma does not discriminate. The immense number of individuals struggling with trauma requires that health care providers approach patient care through a trauma-informed lens. Trauma-informed care is an evidence-based approach to patient-centered care and is vital to the healthcare provider-patient relationship. The increased responsibility of healthcare providers to provide trauma-informed care to all individuals demands a scientifically-based framework to guide the development of a trauma-informed health care professions education program. Healthcare simulation allows health professions’ students to experience real-life scenarios in a safe setting before transitioning …

An Exploration Of Stressors And Perceptions Of Wellness Among Christian Church Ministry Wives, Laura Ann Kellicut
Dissertations
Ministerial families are in the unique situation of a two-person career, where although the husband is the only one employed by the church, the wife is also expected to perform church specific demands and responsibilities (Frame & Shehan, 1994; Lifeway, 2017). Unique variables and factors of stress among ministry wives have been identified along with how their role affects certain domains of life (Douglas, 1961; Frame & Shehan, 1994; Lee, 2007; Zoba, 1997; Luedtke & Sneed, 2018). Lifeway Research (2017) found that 78% of ministers' spouses experienced some level of burnout with 22% at the highest levels. In the literature, …

The Emergence Of Serviced Apartments/Apart-Hotels And Opportunities Post Covid-19, Ding Jie Ang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Serviced apartments are becoming more mainstream as people become more aware of this asset class. Since the onset of Covid-19, people have opted for serviced apartments instead of a hotel for self-contained, typically with more space with a living area, kitchen and access to laundry facilities throughout the pandemic. Combined with lower operating costs, higher profit margin, and lower cost per key at development revealed the financial resilience of this asset class as most serviced apartments operated at a higher occupancy than hotels. With renewed interest from developers and owners keen to build or convert their existing properties to serviced …

The Parkinson’S Prison And The Hero’S Journey To Escape: Improvisation And Storytelling In Parkinson’S Disease, Robert David Cochrane
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world, with leading researchers calling it a pandemic. While there is no cure, pharmaceuticals and surgical interventions increase people with Parkinson’s (PWP) ability to lead longer and more productive lives. However, there is a lack of care available for PWP supporting their social and emotional domains. PWP report high levels of stress, anxiety, and isolation due to the chronic and unpredictably progressive nature of the disease. This leads to a vicious cycle of loss of confidence, decreased activity and socialization, and increased falls.A common phrase in the PD community …

The Stability Of The Speech-To-Song Illusion And Individual Differences, Rodica R. Constantine
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Music and language are easily distinguishable for the average listener despite sharing many structural acoustic similarities. The Speech-to-Song illusion can give rise to both musical and linguistic percepts by inducing a perceptual switch after listening to multiple repetitions of a natural spoken utterance. As such, it has been used as a tool to control for low-level acoustic characteristics previously shown to drive lateralized brain responses regardless of domain-type, helping to disambiguate the contribution of high- versus low-level processes in both music and speech perception. However, there exists a lack of research on how large a role individual differences such as …
