Unmasking The Leading Injuries In Hospitals And A Promising Change, Taylor Karisny
Unmasking The Leading Injuries In Hospitals And A Promising Change, Taylor Karisny
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
The problem that will be studied is the increased development of pressure ulcers among hospitalized intensive care unit patients. The incidence of pressure ulcers is increasing due to our aging population and the increase in the elderly living with disability. Learning how to manage pressure ulcers appropriately and effectively is increasingly important for all professionals in wound care. The review of the literature shows, hospital-acquired pressure ulcers are expensive to treat with the U.S. median cost at $39,000 per patient stay and costing U.S. health care system $3.6 billion per year. Several interventions and preventive measures are current used …
For Bedside Nurses In Acute Care, Can Additional Education Contribute To Adequate Performance Of Prevention And Treatment For Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries?, Hannah Ly
Symposium of Student Scholars
Background: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are common preventable medical issues among patients receiving acute or critical care, such as cancer, spinal cord injuries, or heart disease. Despite the rapid development of healthcare, HAPIs remains one of the biggest challenges that affect patient outcomes, breach patient safety, and become an economic burden for many healthcare facilities worldwide. The healthcare members, especially nurses, often underestimate the harms because the issues are not a life-threaten concern in the inpatient setting. However, HAPIs can lead to emergency conditions such as sepsis. This study aims to access and provide additional education that acknowledges and improves …

Breastfeeding infants is arguably the best way for an infant to receive not only their nutrition but also build up their antibodies and their immune health. Exclusively breastfed infants are also at a lower risk for sudden infant death syndrome as well as decreased risks for infant malnutrition. Being exclusively breastfed after the age of six months is proven to reduce the child’s susceptibility to sinus infections past infancy as well as protect against autoimmune diseases and respiratory allergies. As the number of children in a single household increases the likelihood of an infant being exclusively breastfed after 6 months …

Best Practice For Confirmation Of Nasogastric Tube Placement In Pediatric Patients, Joey Gondhalekar, Hannah Baines, Jacob Barcenas, Kaci Giles, Katie Crocker
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
Background: Nasogastric (NG) tubes are used to provide nutrition or charcoal to patients who cannot swallow or are intubated. For pediatric patients, auscultation confirmation is often used to confirm placement despite the evidence that x-ray confirmation is a more accurate way to confirm placement. Incorrect placement leads to incidents of higher rates of healthcare acquired infections, financial strain on the hospital, and longer lengths of stay for patients.
Objectives: The objective of this evidence-based review is to review relevant published studies in determining the best practice for confirmation of NG tubes in pediatric patients.
Methods: A database search was …

Reducing the Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Nursing Staff Abstract
Bedside nurses overcome many obstacles during their weekly shifts, but one very preventable problem is still an issue. Sleep deprivation in nursing staff can lead to medication errors, decreased reactivity times leading to treatment delays, and subpar overall patient care; all of which directly compromises patient safety. Recent studies have found that the majority of nurses report fatigue interfering with their cognition and memory during their shifts and additionally even more nurses report having made a math error when drawing up and preparing medication for their patients. Despite sleep deprivation …

Abstract
In our daily life, we consume different types of foods. The food we intake greatly balances our blood sugar levels and minimizes highs and lows. It is very important to understand certain food that affects our blood sugar. Maintaining a proper diet can keep our blood sugar within the right range. In this study, we are conducting an analysis of the food that people take in their daily life and how it impacts blood glucose. We have collected data from various sources including National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey performed by CDC(1). We also collected datasets from The Baker …
Breastfeeding Rates Based On Income Group Globally, Trashauna Franklin
Breastfeeding Rates Based On Income Group Globally, Trashauna Franklin
Symposium of Student Scholars
The primary source of nutrition for most new-born babies is breastmilk. Breast milk contains fats, proteins, carbohydrates and a variety of minerals and vitamins. Breastmilk lowers the risk of developing infections and long-term diseases such as type 1 diabetes in infants and children. Studies have suggested that 1 in 5 children have never been breastfed, which could be contributed to where those children are born. Factors such as socio-economic status, lifestyle, and other social determinants in an infant’s place of birth may all contribute to whether a child get breastfed exclusively. The purpose of this research is to see if …
Comparison Of Non-Pharmacologic Pain Interventions For Nicu Infants, Mira Cothran
Comparison Of Non-Pharmacologic Pain Interventions For Nicu Infants, Mira Cothran
Symposium of Student Scholars
Infants in the NICU unfortunately have to endure repeated procedures that cause pain. Over time, these painful experiences can compound into larger issues. Infants receiving repeated procedures with uncontrolled pain can develop neurological issues in the future. Because infants have no way of verbally expressing the pain that they experience, their pain can often be overlooked. Premature infants have underdeveloped kidneys and livers leaving them at risk for adverse outcomes to some pharmacological interventions, especially opioids if not given at the correct dose. This highlights the importance of non-pharmacologic interventions to reduce pain.
This proposed project would help to determine …

Preliminary Analysis Of The Effects Of Non-Target Supplemental Feeding On Camera Trap Captures Of Small Mammals In Central Georgia, Raena Mccown, Travis Cunningham, Alfred J. Mead
Georgia Journal of Science
Supplemental bird feeding is a widespread hobby throughout western culture. Although it brings joy to many people, bird feeding has been shown to have potentially negative effects on local bird populations and small mammalian species. To study the differences in local occurrence of native small mammalian species around bird feeders and in more distant settings, six camera traps were placed in a rural residential area in Putnam County, Georgia. Three cameras were placed facing bird feeders and three placed a minimum of 60 m away from the feeders. Species presence was recorded three days a week from 12:00 am Monday …

Imposed Food And Its Challenges To Food Security, Zachary Tobias
Imposed Food And Its Challenges To Food Security, Zachary Tobias
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) declares that food security exists when all people have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. This is taken to understand food security in four measures: availability, access, utilization, and stability. The focus of this paper will be on access which concerns the affordability and allocation of the food supply (Ahteensuu & Siipi, 2016). I argue that social pressures on food choice, which I call food impositions, limit one's access to sufficient and safe foods by encouraging undereating in women and unhealthily high volumes of meat consumption in men. People …
Assessing The Impact Of Storage Time And Shape Of The Block On The Slicability Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Nathan Pace
Assessing The Impact Of Storage Time And Shape Of The Block On The Slicability Of Commercial Cheddar Cheese, Nathan Pace
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Cheddar cheese is one of the world's most popular cheeses and is consumed in blocks and slices. The slicability of cheddar cheese can depend on textural and rheological properties. Understanding these characteristics can enhance desirability and reduce material loss occurring during slicing. In this study, we focused on four main parameters: slice thickness, cheese shape, storage period, and cheese type. Four thicknesses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm) and two shapes (triangular and square) of mild, medium, sharp, and extra sharp were selected. Cheeses were purchased from Walmart and the Utah State University creamery. At first, cheese blocks were cut …

Nutrition Education As A Tool Of Empowerment, Claire Devries
Masters Projects
This study investigates the nutrition education programs implemented by organizations that operate Fresh Markets in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with the goal of connecting empowered nutrition education to a food justice context. A review of scholarly literature reveals that there has been limited published work within the last three decades that integrates empowered nutrition to a food justice context. Analysis of interviews conducted with the four organizations indicates that nutrition education is used as a tool of empowerment in a food justice framework. However, this study reveals that nutrition education cannot be used alone as a tool of empowerment, rather it …

A Survey Of Speech-Language Pathologists' Academic Preparation In Craniofacial Anomalies, Francesca Myerski
A Survey Of Speech-Language Pathologists' Academic Preparation In Craniofacial Anomalies, Francesca Myerski
Honors Theses
Craniofacial anomalies occur in 1 of 750 newborns a year with the three main types being cleft lip, cleft palate, and cleft lip and/or cleft palate. There are six main factors that affect craniofacial anomalies that are focused on in this research, including genetics, environmental factors, medications, diet, health risks, and surgical procedures/surgeons. The research found that there is a lot of information on craniofacial anomalies and speech-language pathologists need to learn about as much as possible. The lack of knowledge and academic preparations speech-language pathologists have in craniofacial anomalies has decreased their awareness in the birth defect and has …

Expression Of P-Stat3 And C-Myc Correlates With P2-Hnf4Α Expression In Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (Nafld), Mamoun Younes, Lin Zhang, Baharan Fekry, Kristin Eckel-Mahan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
We studied the expression of two hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4α) isoforms, p-STAT3. and c-Myc in 49 consecutive liver biopsies with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) using immunohistochemistry. All 49 biopsies (100%) were positive for nuclear expression of P1-HNF4α. Twenty-eight (57%) cases were positive for P2-HNF4α, 6 (12%) were positive for p-STAT3 and 5 (10%) were positive for c-Myc. All 6 (100%) p-STAT3-positive cases were also positive for P2-HNF4α (p = 0.03). p-STAT3-positive cases were more likely to be positive for c-Myc (67% vs. 2%, p = 0.0003). Four cases were positive for P2-HNF4α, p-STAT3 and c-Myc. p-STAT3 …

Modulation Of Sirtuins During Monolayer Chondrocyte Culture Influences Cartilage Regeneration Upon Transfer To A 3d Culture Environment, Hannah K Heywood, Stephen D Thorpe, Renos M Jeropoulos, Paul W Caton, David A Lee
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
This study examined the role of sirtuins in the regenerative potential of articular chondrocytes. Sirtuins (SIRT1-7) play a key role in regulating cartilage homeostasis. By inhibiting pro-inflammatory pathways responsible for cartilage degradation and promoting the expression of key matrix components, sirtuins have the potential to drive a favourable balance between anabolic and catabolic processes critical to regenerative medicine. When subjected to osmolarity and glucose concentrations representative of the in vivo niche, freshly isolated bovine chondrocytes exhibited increases in SIRT1 but not SIRT3 gene expression. Replicating methods adopted for the in vitro monolayer expansion of chondrocytes for cartilage regenerative therapies, we …

Low-grade, sustained inflammation in white adipose tissue (WAT) characterizes obesity and coincides with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, pharmacological targeting of inflammation lacks durable therapeutic effects in insulin-resistant conditions. Through a computational screen, we discovered that the FDA-approved rheumatoid arthritis drug auranofin improved insulin sensitivity and normalized obesity-associated abnormalities, including hepatic steatosis and hyperinsulinemia in mouse models of T2DM. We also discovered that auranofin accumulation in WAT depleted inflammatory responses to a high-fat diet without altering body composition in obese wild-type mice. Surprisingly, elevated leptin levels and blunted beta-adrenergic receptor activity achieved by leptin receptor deletion abolished the antidiabetic …

In this nonsystematic review and opinion, including articles primarily selected from PubMed, we examine the pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in order to craft a reasonable opinion to help forge a paradigm shift in the treatment and prevention of primarily opioid-induced NAS. Newborns of individuals who use illicit and licit substances during pregnancy are at risk for withdrawal, also known as NAS. In the US, the reported prevalence of NAS has increased from 4.0 per 1000 hospital births in 2010 to 7.3 per 1000 hospital births in 2017, which is an 82% increase. The management of …
