Benefits Of The Modern Classroom Project In High School Mathematics, Micah Josiah Smith
Benefits Of The Modern Classroom Project In High School Mathematics, Micah Josiah Smith
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Previous research has shown that mathematical self-efficacy is positively correlated with mathematical achievement. However, in a high school classroom setting, teachers’ effectiveness varies based on experience, education, and how they incorporate certain pedagogical practices. The Modern Classroom Project was designed to have teachers integrate self-paced learning, mastery-based learning, metacognition, and blended instructions all within one classroom; with an emphasis placed on allowing students the opportunity to understand a particular skill before attempting the next skill. Discovering what components of the Modern Classroom Project enhances student’s self-efficacy score, and mathematical achievement was the focus of the study.

Development Of The Elementary Teachers’ Commitment To Outdoor Education Survey: A Mixed Methods Study, Sagan Goodpaster
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
As the Green Schoolyards Movement continues to grow throughout North America, outdoor education (OE) is gaining more attention in the formal K-12 curriculum (Dyment, 2005; Sterrett & Imig, 2015). Rooted in the pedagogies of place-based and experiential learning, outdoor instruction provides social, psychological, physical, and academic benefits for students, and fosters their sense of connection to the natural environment (Dubel & Sobel, 2008; Robertson, 2017). In particular, outdoor learning opportunities have been shown to promote greater gains in students’ scientific content knowledge (Carrier et al., 2014; Cronin-Jones, 2000; Dirks & Orvis, 2005; Kenney et al., 2003). Outdoor instruction involves students …

Investigating Discussion Forum Impact On Students’ Social Justice Beliefs In Online Undergraduate Mathematics Courses: A Mixed Methods Study, Ashlee Lynn Akin Matney
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
While teaching math for social justice and equity has become a heavily researched topic in recent decades with Jo Boaler (2008, 2015, 2016), Rochelle Gutiérrez (2009, 2013), and Eric (Rico) Gutstein (2003, 2006, 2007, 2013) emerging as recent leaders in the charge, the focus has consistently remained on traditional classroom teaching (e.g. Boaler, 2008; Gutiérrez, 2009; Gutstein, 2003). This convergent design mixed methods study investigated the impact of teaching math for social justice in the online learning environment, specifically, the impact of discussion forums on students’ social justice beliefs in fully online undergraduate math courses.
Quantitatively, 56 students completed pre- …

Collaborative Learning In An Asynchronous Online Introductory Statistics Course, Marla Lemmon
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Collaborative learning has been shown to improve student learning and performance; however, the influence of collaboration has not yet been examined in the context of an online introductory statistics course. Often the influence of collaborative learning is measured using only one outcome variable, typically course achievement. This study will contribute a more thorough examination of the influence collaboration has on student learning by operationalizing the learning construct with the use of multiple measures: academic performance, perceived learning, and growth in statistical knowledge. In addition, this study will provide a model for incorporating collaborative learning in an asynchronous online course.

Elementary Preservice Teachers Self-Efficacy And Confidence Teaching Engineering, Andrea Perrin
Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
Engineering has become a popular topic within science standards in recent years. However, many teachers do not have experience teaching or doing engineering. With the possibility of engineering becoming a major part of the science curriculum, it is important that teachers are prepared and well equipped to teach and instruct engineering activities, lessons, and support. This quantitative study studied elementary preservice teachers’ self-efficacy and confidence with teaching engineering in the classroom after experiencing and teaching engineering activities. Overall, the implementation of the engineering activities had both positive and negative impacts on preservice teachers’ perceptions of themselves and teaching engineering in …

A Survey Of Elementary Educators' Self-Efficacy Related To Stem Education, Elizabeth Mckenzie Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education
While the call for STEM and engineering design has increased since the release of the Next Generation Science Standards, the implementation of STEM in elementary grades has been slow. A variety of factors play a role in why educators, schools, or districts make the informed decisions they do regarding curriculum and instruction. Identifying strengths and challenges elementary educators face in implementing STEM into the curriculum can guide schools and districts in creating supports for increasing STEM in the elementary grades. This study sought to create and test a survey instrument for use with elementary educators in a large urban district …
Equivalence Of The Transition Heat Capacities Of Proteins And Dna, Matthew W. Eskew, Albert S. Benight
Equivalence Of The Transition Heat Capacities Of Proteins And Dna, Matthew W. Eskew, Albert S. Benight
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
It has been reported for many globular proteins that the native heat capacity at 25°C, per gram, is the same. This has been interpreted to indicate that heat capacity is a fundamental property of native proteins that provides important information on molecular structure and stability. Heat capacities for both proteins and DNA has been suggested to be related to universal effects of hydration/solvation on native structures. Here we report on results from thermal denaturation analysis of two well-known proteins, human serum albumin and lysozyme, and a short DNA hairpin. The transition heat capacities at the Tm for the three molecules …

Compound Flooding In Convergent Estuaries: Insights From An Analytical Model, Ramin Familkhalili, Stefan A. Talke, David A. Jay
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
We investigate here the effects of geometric properties (channel depth and cross-sectional convergence length), storm surge characteristics, friction, and river flow on the spatial and temporal variability of compound flooding along an idealized, meso-tidal coastal-plain estuary. An analytical model is developed that includes exponentially convergent geometry, tidal forcing, constant river flow, and a representation of storm surge as a combination of two sinusoidal waves. Nonlinear bed friction is treated using Chebyshev polynomials and trigonometric functions, and a multisegment approach is used to increase accuracy. Model results show that river discharge increases the damping of surge amplitudes in an estuary, while …
Single-Cell Systems Neuroscience: A Growing Frontier In Mental Illness, Sean O'Sullivan
Single-Cell Systems Neuroscience: A Growing Frontier In Mental Illness, Sean O'Sullivan
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
The development of effective treatments for psychiatric disease has been disappointing in recent decades given the advancements in neuroscience. Moreover, rising rates of mental illness such as addiction and depression compel scientists and physicians to discover novel and creative solutions. One such approach that has proven effective is systems neuroscience: A focus on networks as opposed to mechanism. Further, investigation at the single-cell and circuit level is likely to be fruitful in such endeavors as this resolution describes the functional psychopathology that allows for intervention.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Recombining known primitive concepts into larger novel combinations is a quintessentially human cognitive capability. Whether large neural models in NLP can acquire this ability while learning from data is an open question. In this paper, we investigate this problem from the perspective of formal languages. We use deterministic finite-state transducers to make an unbounded number of datasets with controllable properties governing compositionality. By randomly sampling over many transducers, we explore which of their properties contribute to learnability of a compositional relation by a neural network. We find that the models either learn the relations completely or not at all. The …
Review Of Daniel Farber, Inequality And Regulation: Designing Rules To Address Race, Poverty, And Environmental Law, David A. Weisbach
Review Of Daniel Farber, Inequality And Regulation: Designing Rules To Address Race, Poverty, And Environmental Law, David A. Weisbach
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Dan Farber’s wide-ranging article, Inequality and Regulation, makes two core arguments. First, Farber argues that using a uniform value of statistical life (VSL) in cost-benefit analysis is justified not only as a pragmatic compromise but also as a matter of first principles. In particular, he argues that a uniform VSL can be based on a theory of equality that he calls harm egalitarianism, which holds that individuals have equal entitlements to protection against harm. Second, Farber, looking for ways to address environmental justice concerns through regulations, argues that “a heightened focus on differences in exposure and vulnerability [in the cost-benefit …
The Role Of Experts In Policymaking: An Assessment Of Witness Educational Backgrounds In Congressional Testimony, Benedicte Adair
The Role Of Experts In Policymaking: An Assessment Of Witness Educational Backgrounds In Congressional Testimony, Benedicte Adair
Theses
This thesis provides a first-of-its kind benchmark on the extent to which academically-trained professionals in the United States are availed of opportunities to directly deliver evidence to the United States Congress, as well as how contemporary party politics shapes this system. We randomly sample and manually code the educational backgrounds of 2,147 witnesses from 32 Congressional Committee Hearings that occurred between 2001 and 2020. This study reveals three key findings. The first is that academically-trained professionals have extensive access to the halls of Congress. Second, that all types of degrees have at least some representation amongst witness calls. The third …

A Content Analysis Based Review On The Application Of Document Similarity Measures On E-Resource Retrieval In Agriculture And Allied Fields, Nitumika Gogoi, Uma Kanjilal
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
From observations made by Robson (1993) who states that “the success of data collection should be assessed in relation to the specific research question”, it is felt necessary to study the aim as well as the fact that the most suitable unit of analysis will be sufficiently large to be considered as a whole but small enough to be referred as a relevant meaning unit during the analysis process (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004). Based on these criteria, the researcher tries to investigate that the study is carried out in the right direction which rest upon the credibility and essentiality of …

The Impact Of Extracurricular Activities And Attendance On Student Achievement At A Mississippi Community College, Amanda Hyde Marbury
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the impact of extracurricular activities and class attendance on student achievement in science courses at a Mississippi community college. Public colleges are dependent on state funding for survival, with one main criterion for determining that funding being the number of students enrolled. Students need to be successful in courses to keep up the retention and enrollment rates. Student success is potentially linked to class attendance and student involvement in extracurricular activities. Schools need to look at factors that might be affecting students’ performance in the classroom such as participation in extracurricular …

Superior Status: Relational Obstacles In Law To Racial Justice And Lgbtq Equality, Osamudia James

Animus and discrimination are the two legal lenses through which in-equality is typically assessed and understood. Insufficient attention, however, is paid to the role of status in animating inequality, even in landmark cases thought to be equality-promoting. More than an animating force between intractable po-litical conflicts, status also informs the development of equality law in the United States. When courts, advocates, and policymakers affirm, ignore, miss, or con-cede to status hierarchies instead of dismantling them, those groups that perceive a decrease in their status relative to others will only use “equality-promoting” doctrine to rebalance status hierarchy in their favor. A Computationally Efficient Framework For Vector Representation Of Persistence Diagrams, Kit C. Chan, Umar Islambekov, Alexey Luchinsky, Rebecca Sanders
Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications
In Topological Data Analysis, a common way of quantifying the shape of data is to use a persistence diagram (PD). PDs are multisets of points in R2 computed using tools of algebraic topology. However, this multi-set structure limits the utility of PDs in applications. Therefore, in recent years efforts have been directed towards extracting informative and efficient summaries from PDs to broaden the scope of their use for machine learning tasks. We propose a computationally efficient framework to convert a PD into a vector in Rn, called a vectorized persistence block (VPB). We show that our representation …

Deep neural networks used for reconstructing sparse-view CT data are typically trained by minimizing a pixel- wise mean-squared error or similar loss function over a set of training images. However, networks trained with such losses are prone to wipe out small, low-contrast features that are critical for screening and diagnosis. To remedy this issue, we introduce a novel training loss inspired by the model observer framework to enhance the detectability of weak signals in the reconstructions. We evaluate our approach on the reconstruction of synthetic sparse-view breast CT data, and demonstrate an improvement in signal detectability with the proposed loss.

Seagrasses are globally recognized for their contribution to blue carbon sequestration. However, accurate quantification of their carbon storage capacity remains uncertain due, in part, to an incomplete inventory of global seagrass extent and assessment of its temporal variability. Furthermore, seagrasses are undergoing significant decline globally, which highlights the urgent need to develop change detection techniques applicable to both the scale of loss and the spatial complexity of coastal environments. This study applied a deep learning algorithm to a 30-year time series of Landsat 5 through 8 imagery to quantify seagrass extent, leaf area index (LAI), and belowground organic carbon (BGC) …

As primary producers, phytoplankton play an integral role in global biogeochemical cycles through their production of oxygen and fixation of carbon. They also provide significant ecosystem services, by supporting secondary production and fisheries. Phytoplankton biomass and diversity have been identified by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) as Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs), properties that need to be monitored to better understand and predict the ocean system. Phytoplankton identification and enumeration relies on the skills and expertise of highly trained taxonomic analysts. The training of new taxonomic analysts is intensive and requires months to years of supervised training before an analyst …
