The Role Of Data For Ai Startup Growth, James Bessen, Stephen Michael Impink, Lydia Reichensperger, Robert Seamans

Faculty Scholarship

Artificial intelligence (“AI”)-enabled products are expected to drive economic growth. Training data are important for firms developing AI-enabled products; without training data, firms cannot develop or refine their algorithms. This is particularly the case for AI startups developing new algorithms and products. However, there is no consensus in the literature on which aspects of training data are most important. Using unique survey data of AI startups, we find that startups with access to proprietary training data are more likely to acquire venture capital funding.

The Integer-Antimagic Spectra Of A Disjoint Union Of Hamiltonian Graphs, Uğur Odabaşi, Dan Roberts, Richard M. Low

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Let A be a nontrivial abelian group. A simple graph G = (V,E) is A-antimagic, if there exists an edge labeling f: E(G) → A\{0} such that the induced vertex labeling (Formula Presented) is a one-to-one map. The integer-antimagic spectrum of a graph G is the set IAM(G) = {k: G is Zk-antimagic and k ≥ 2}. In this paper, we determine the integer-antimagic spectra for a disjoint union of Hamiltonian graphs.

Constructing Integer-Magic Graphs Via The Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, Richard M. Low, Dan Roberts

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Let A be a nontrivial additive abelian group and A* = A \ {0}. A graph is A-magic if there exists an edge labeling f using elements of A∗ which induces a constant vertex labeling of the graph. Such a labeling f is called an A-magic labeling and the constant value of the induced vertex labeling is called an A-magic value. In this paper, we use the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz to construct nontrivial classes of Zp-magic graphs, prime p ≥ 3. For these graphs, some lower bounds on the number of distinct Zp-magic labelings are also established.

Visual Task Classification Using Classic Machine Learning And Cnns, Devangi Vilas Chinchankarame, Noha Elfiky, Nada Attar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Our eyes actively perform tasks including, but not limited to, searching, comparing, and counting. This includes tasks in front of a computer, whether it be trivial activities like reading email, or video gaming, or more serious activities like drone management, or flight simulation. Understanding what type of visual task is being performed is important to develop intelligent user interfaces. In this work, we investigated standard machine and deep learning methods to identify the task type using eye-tracking data-including both raw numerical data and the visual representations of the user gaze scan paths and pupil size. To this end, we experimented …

Leveraging Initial Cognitive Load To Predict User Response To Complex Visual Tasks, Reem Albaghli, Yaman Jandali, Sarah Almahmid, Nada Attar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this study, we were able to show how cognitive load measurement during the initiation of a complex visual task can predict user response. We measured cognitive load using pupil size and microsaccade rate. The initial phase of task was defined as the first 25 percent of the trial Reaction Time (RT), which was variable up to 50 seconds. The complex visual task entailed a set of twelve words that could be grouped based into 1, 2, or 3 categories or sets, e.g., the words bed, pillow, headboard, etc. can be grouped into a single set that is bedroom. We …

Fake Malware Generation Using Hmm And Gan, Harshit Trehan, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the past decade, the number of malware attacks have grown considerably and, more importantly, evolved. Many researchers have successfully integrated state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to combat this ever present and rising threat to information security. However, the lack of enough data to appropriately train these machine learning models is one big challenge that is still present. Generative modelling has proven to be very efficient at generating image-like synthesized data that can match the actual data distribution. In this paper, we aim to generate malware samples as opcode sequences and attempt to differentiate them from the real ones with the …

Crowdfunding Non-Fungible Tokens On The Blockchain, Sean Basu, Kimaya Basu, Thomas H. Austin

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have been used as a way of rewarding content creators. Artists publish their works on the blockchain as NFTs, which they can then sell. The buyer of an NFT then holds ownership of a unique digital asset, which can be resold in much the same way that real-world art collectors might trade paintings. However, while a deal of effort has been spent on selling works of art on the blockchain, very little attention has been paid to using the blockchain as a means of fundraising to help finance the artist’s work in the first place. Additionally, while …

Race Car Aerodynamics Simulation And Transmitted Tire Reaction Forces, Mark T.J. Lin, Periklis Papadopoulos Jan 2022

Race Car Aerodynamics Simulation And Transmitted Tire Reaction Forces, Mark T.J. Lin, Periklis Papadopoulos

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Often in Computational Fluid Dynamics integral forces and restoring moments are calculated, but the location where they should be applied may not always be clear. This is because the location is not intuitive: it is dependent on the vehicle’s velocity and its orientation (e.g. sideslip angle). A technique has been developed to translate the aerodynamic forces to the reaction forces on the vehicle’s tires. In this study, CFD simulation is performed with a 7.5° yaw to look at the effect of cornering. To understand aerodynamic effect on vehicle dynamics one must know the location at which this force is applied. …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Fatigue detection for air traffic controllers is an important yet challenging problem in aviation safety research. Most of the existing methods for this problem are based on facial features. In this paper, we propose an ensemble learning model that combines both facial features and voice features and design a fatigue detection method through multifeature fusion, referred to as Facial and Voice Stacking (FV-Stacking). Specifically, for facial features, we first use OpenCV and Dlib libraries to extract mouth and eye areas and then employ a combination of M-Convolutional Neural Network (M-CNN) and E-Convolutional Neural Network (E-CNN) to determine the state of …

Flexible And Robust Real-Time Intrusion Detection Systems To Network Dynamics, Kicho Yu, Khanh Nguyen, Younghee Park

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Deep learning-based intrusion detection systems have advanced due to their technological innovations such as high accuracy, automation, and scalability to develop an effective network intrusion detection system (NIDS). However, most of the previous research has focused on model generation through intensive analysis of feature engineering instead of considering real environments. They have limitations to applying the previous methods for a real network environment to detect real-time network attacks. In this paper, we propose a new flexible and robust NIDS based on Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with a multi-classifier to generate a detection model in real time. The proposed system adaptively …

Markov Decision Process For Modeling Social Engineering Attacks And Finding Optimal Attack Strategies, Faranak Abri, Jianjun Zheng, Akbar Siami Namin, Keith S. Jones

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

It is important to comprehend the attacker's behavior and capacity in order to build a stronger fortress and thus be able to protect valuable assets more effectively. Prior to launching technical and physical attacks, an attacker may enter the reconnaissance stage and gather sensitive information. To collect such valuable data, one of the most effective approaches is through conducting social engineering attacks, borrowing techniques from deception theory. As a result, it is of utmost importance to understand when an attacker behaves truthfully and when the attacker opts to be deceitful. This paper models attacker's states using the Markov Decision Process …

Computation Of New Diagonal Graph Ramsey Numbers, Richard M. Low, Ardak Kapbasov, Arman Kapbasov, Sergey Bereg

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

For various connected simple graphs G, we extend the table of diagonal graph Ramsey numbers R(G,G) in ‘An Atlas of Graphs.’ This is accomplished by first converting the calculation of R(G,G) into a satisfiability problem in propositional logic. Mathematical arguments and scientific computing are then used to calculate R(G,G).

Coordination Protocols For Verifiable Consistency In Distributed Storage Systems, Ashwin Ramaswamy Jan 2022

Coordination Protocols For Verifiable Consistency In Distributed Storage Systems, Ashwin Ramaswamy

Master's Theses

Achieving consistency in a highly available distributed storage system has been formally proven to be an impossible task when the system faces network partitions and faulty processes. The complexity is exacerbated when the system allows concurrent processes to send transactions to all the other servers and coordinate the consistent commitment of different transactions. In the event of a partition, each server may allow clients to request updates involving the current state of the data, which makes achieving replicated consistency challenging. To solve the inconsistency problems, several consensus protocols are used, but have strict requirements in order to make progress and …
