Understanding Elementary Classroom Teachers’ Knowledge Of Vocabulary Development And Practices For Teaching Vocabulary To Students From Low-Income Backgrounds, Adria Waters
Theses and Dissertations
The link between vocabulary knowledge acquisition and its effect on reading comprehension has been well established over years of research, however, students from lowincome backgrounds may have less access to the opportunities that allow for the building of this vocabulary knowledge prior to and including entry into formal schooling. Therefore, it is necessary to develop more equitable opportunities for learning and practice in literacy. It is important to begin to understand what teachers currently know and understand about how vocabulary develops and how to best teach it. A nationwide survey collected data about Title I elementary classroom teachers’ knowledge of …

Apragmatism: The Renewal Of A Label For Communication Disorders Associated With Right Hemisphere Brain Damage, Jamila Minga, Shannon M. Sheppard, Melissa Johnson, Ronelle Hewetson, Petrea Cornwell, Margaret Lehman Blake
Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Right hemisphere communication disorders are neither consistently labelled nor adequately defined. Labels associated with right hemisphere brain damage (RHD) are broad and fail to capture the essence of communication challenges needed for stroke-related service provisions. Determination of rehabilitation needs and best-practice guidelines for the education, management and functional improvement of communication disorders after RHD are all predicated on an apt diagnostic label and disorder characteristics.
Aims
In this paper apragmatism is proposed as a potential communication-specific diagnostic label for the impairments in communication that occur after RHD. In particular, the researchers aimed: (1) to establish an operational definition of …

Biblical Hebrew As A Negative Concord Language, J. Bradley Dukes
Biblical Hebrew As A Negative Concord Language, J. Bradley Dukes
Theses and Dissertations
The typological distinction between negative concord and double negation languages has received increasing attention over the past century beginning with Jespersen (1922). Multiple negation in Biblical Hebrew has been subject to mixed treatment in this regard. Some scholars have treated all multiple negation in Biblical Hebrew as emphatic (Gesenius, Kautzsch & Cowley 1910; Dahood 1975; Holmstedt 2016) while others have labeled these constructions as pleonastic (Jouon & Muraoka 2006). Snyman (2004) determines that Biblical Hebrew is neither a negative concord language nor a double negation language based upon his assessment that "BH does not exhibit multiple negation elements." In this …

The Human Consequences Of The Us-Mexico Border: Testimonial Literature Of Gloria Anzaldúa And Valeria Luiselli, Grace Hodgetts
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The discussion surrounding the US-Mexico Border has remained a central issue in American politics throughout recent decades, with anti-immigrant attitudes being more prevalent than ever. The increasing support for border militarization and immigration restrictions exemplifies an American public that lacks an accurate understanding of the implications of militarizing the US-Mexico border. Testimonial literature about the border will center the discussion of this essay, and it can be categorized as any writing that illustrates one or more of the negative consequences of the US-Mexico border. The majority of the border’s effects are negative, and its impact is not felt by one …

Don Watson. The Passion Of Private White. Sydney: Scribner Australia, 2022. 326 Pp., Raul Pertierra
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Excerpt from Book Review: This is both an impressive but also a puzzling book. Don Watson is a gifted writer. His book deals with a complex subject—a passionately driven Vietnam veteran (Neville White) who studies anthropology and devotes his life to helping Donydji, a remote Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land, in the north of Australia. The condition of Australian Aborigines is shocking and reveals the impossibility of modern states to understand, let alone assist them in preserving their culture and traditions as a holistic means of coexisting with mainstream Australian society! The book begins by introducing Neville White and his …

Background: The efficacy of pre-hospital emergency services is heavily dependent on the effective communication of care providers. This effective communication occurs between providers as part of a team, but also among providers interacting with family members and patients. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced a number of communication challenges to emergency care, which are primarily linked to the increased use of PPE.
Methods: We sought to analyze the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on Emergency Medical Service (EMS) workers and pre-hospital care delivery. We conducted focus groups and one-on-one interviews with fire-EMS first responders between Sept 2021 and 2022. Interviews …

This study also observed students’ challenges during online classes, such as the unsupportive learning environment—i.e. studying alone and household chores distraction. This study offers insight for teachers that students’ reflective journal helps evaluate the instructional practice and …

This qualitative study addressed the concern of video relay service (VRS) interpreters experiencing stress, which can lead to burnout. In contrast to the relatively long history of VRS in the United States, the Canadian Deaf community gained access to VRS services only in 2016. Yet to date, there has been no Canadian research on the work environment of VRS sign language interpreters. For this study, Canadian interpreters were interviewed about their experiences working in a VRS setting and the associated stressors. The interviewed interpreters also had potential strategies and solutions to manage their stress effectively.
The goal of this pilot …

Bureaucratic Resistance And The Challenge Of Implementing Asean Our Eyes: Case Study Of Jolo Church Bombing 2019, Chaula Rininta Anindya
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Cultural values impact conceptions of good leadership, explaining why some Western-oriented leadership strategies appear to fail in Confucian contexts. To better understand how cultural values influence the process of leadership, the Vannsimpco Leadership survey was given to 291 Korean faculty members at a university in South Korea, along with 168 faculty members from an American university who served as a comparison group. Following the collection of 95 surveys (48 from Korean faculty and 47 from American faculty), factor analysis was used to evaluate respondents’ perceptions of leadership. Results suggested that Confucian values do indeed influence conceptions of leadership. As for …

Psychosocial oncology is coming of age. While the survival rates of cancer patients have increased, many patients suffer from treatment-related long-lasting effects that may adversely affect their mental health and health-related quality of life. Along with the changes in therapeutic strategies, physicians should pay more attention to the psychosocial problems secondary to cancer as it is well recognized that the diagnosis of cancer and its treatment can be extremely stressful and emotional for cancer patients. Psychosocial oncology refers to the multidisciplinary subdiscipline of cancer care that was created to improve patients’ mental well-being by offering strategies to help them cope …

This essay explores how the decolonial practices of Latina poet Alicia Borinsky in Frivolous Women and Other Sinners(2009) and British filmmaker and installation artist Isaac Julien in Lessons of the Hour (2019) occasion open-ended conceptions of the public that engage economic and technological developments in tandem with questions of individual encounters, objects, and values. Their figurations point beyond the domain of aesthesis to a view of aesthetic publicity on which unprecedented social identities emerge through interactions among multiple, often mutually opposed platforms and assemblies. The essay offers working definitions of aesthetic publicity and decolonial aesthetics and continues by scrutinizing …
