Occult Conceptualism, Olivia Shao Jan 2022

Occult Conceptualism, Olivia Shao

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores and defines the term “Occult Conceptualism.” The term questions past models for Conceptual Art, in particular those rooted in Benjamin H. D. Buchloh’s 1990 text, “Conceptual Art 1962–1969: From the Aesthetic of Administration to the Critique of Institutions,” and Joseph Kosuth’s safeguarding of Conceptual Art in part two of his text “Art after Philosophy,” in which a number of artists (John Baldessari, Douglas Huebler, amongst others) are excluded from his canon. Arguing for a new approach to certain strains of conceptualism, this paper refutes the perspective that the conceptual movement was grounded only in theoretical and rationalist …

Guns And Practical Reason: An Ethical Exploration Of Guns And Language, Mark Ryan Jan 2022

Guns And Practical Reason: An Ethical Exploration Of Guns And Language, Mark Ryan

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

There is no shortage of words and rhetoric being offered up in relation to the topic of guns, much of it directed to the political standoff regarding how to respond to gun violence. Yet the debate over guns in America, especially as it concerns putting in conversation the positions of “gun people” and “non-gun people,” barely scratches the surface of substantive convictions held on both sides about the place of guns in our lives. A critical reason for this is that the language and rhetoric of the debate suppresses such convictions, keeping the discussion shallow and antagonistic. This, I argue, …

Vietnamese Document Analysis: Dataset, Method And Benchmark Suite, Khang Nguyen, An Nguyen, Nguyen D. Vo, Tam Nguyen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Document image understanding is increasingly useful since the number of digital documents is increasing day-by-day and the need for automation is increasing. Object detection plays a significant role in detecting vital objects and layouts in document images and contributes to providing a clearer understanding of the documents. Nonetheless, previous research mainly focuses on English document images, and studies on Vietnamese document images are limited. In this study, we extensively benchmark state-of-the-art object detectors and analyze the performance of each method on Vietnamese document images. Moreover, we also investigate the effectiveness of four different loss functions on the experimental object detection …

Originalism And The Inseparability Of Decision Procedures From Interpretive Standards, Michael L. Smith Jan 2022

Originalism And The Inseparability Of Decision Procedures From Interpretive Standards, Michael L. Smith

Faculty Articles

In his article, Originalism: Standard and Procedure, Professor Stephen E. Sachs describes a never-ending debate between originalism's advocates and critics. Originalists argue that certain historical facts determine the Constitution's meaning. But determining these facts is difficult, if not impossible for judges, attorneys, and the public. Sachs seeks to rise above this debate, arguing that the legal community should not expect originalism to offer a procedure for interpreting the Constitution. Instead, the legal community should treat originalism as a

standard to judge interpretations.

This Article takes issue with this approach. Originalism is not like other instances in law where statutes or …

Epistemology In Heterodox Economics?, Bret N. Bogenschneider Jan 2022

Epistemology In Heterodox Economics?, Bret N. Bogenschneider

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

The epistemology of Heterodox Economics has been described as a type of methodological pluralism where its relativism is taken as consistent with new versions of science. However, methodological pluralism has severe drawbacks as a means of inquiry. Whereas Economics is often understood in positivist terms as a closed set, Heterodox Economics includes additional concepts and methods. As an open set of ideas, Heterodox Economics is a means to doubt or to not-know and comprises Einfühlung or the creative intuition for the introduction of new ideas into the epistemology of Economics.

One Size Does Not Fit All Leases—It's Time To Amend Bankruptcy Code Section 365, Rachel Hudson Jan 2022

One Size Does Not Fit All Leases—It's Time To Amend Bankruptcy Code Section 365, Rachel Hudson

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

For far too long, Bankruptcy Code Section 365 has caused confusion among parties to oil and gas leases when one party files for bankruptcy. This section of the Bankruptcy Code is intended to provide relief to debtors who are party to an unexpired lease or an executory contract, allowing a debtor-in-possession or trustee to make the decision to either assume or reject the agreement. While this concept is straightforward for standard lease agreements and contracts, courts have struggled to determine whether oil and gas leases actually fall into the category of a “lease” per se, an executory contract, or neither. …

Sustainable Canons: Gadamer's Hermeneutics And Theatre, Charles A. Gillespie Jan 2022

Sustainable Canons: Gadamer's Hermeneutics And Theatre, Charles A. Gillespie

Catholic Studies Faculty Publications

This essay investigates Gadamer's hermeneutic theory and its application to theatre. Attention to Gadamer's views of theatre and performative interpretation provides a foundation to theorize a more sustainable canon. Classics that constitute a sustainable canon operate within a tradition through a community of interpretation that continually returns to interpret them anew. This structure also describes the theatrical repertoire. Several of Gadamer's central themes find easy analogues on stage: play, the history of effect (Wirkungsgeschichte), the participation of an audience in the fusion of horizons, and art's making present continuity the past. Gadamer provides a framework for understanding the …

Finding A Voice: Overcoming Shame Through A Classroom Collective Exploration Of Vulnerability, Mary Catherine Lockmiller, Amy Armstrong-Heimsoth Jan 2022

Finding A Voice: Overcoming Shame Through A Classroom Collective Exploration Of Vulnerability, Mary Catherine Lockmiller, Amy Armstrong-Heimsoth

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

In keeping with the call for greater justice and diversity within the occupational therapy profession, many educational programs are taking steps to infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across their curriculum. In this paper, we will introduce the theoretical concepts underpinning the first assignment in a DEI curriculum thread in one entry-level occupational therapy doctoral (OTD) program, grounding it in critical pedagogy and exploring how it provides a first step to critical aptitude by providing space for an open-ended, reflexive dialogue about subjective experiences of internalized shame and marginalization. Students learn how to practice self awareness, understand shame culture, and …

Application Of Production Process On Translation Of Dramatic Literature, Yao Bian, Mary Chattin, Caleb Dransfield, Zachary Sirkin Jan 2022

Application Of Production Process On Translation Of Dramatic Literature, Yao Bian, Mary Chattin, Caleb Dransfield, Zachary Sirkin

Research Days Posters 2022

Surpassing literary and non-literary delineation, theater and performance translation has long being holding a unique position amongst all the types of linguistic and cultural transmission. Being concurrently a legitimate working document and stylized literature set up challenges as well as enables creative approaches to balance the key criterion of equivalence, relative autonomy and functionality. The project uses The Stronger, a dramatic monologue authored by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg, as the sample text to generate of an actable Chinese translation. The translation has adopted the principle of domestication by relocating the action to 1930s Shanghai to enhance audience accessibility. The …

The Importance Of The Hierarchy Of Linguistic Varieties In Transnational #Metoo Literature Using Kristen Roupenian’S Short Story “Cat Person” As A Case Study, Emily Rosman Jan 2022

The Importance Of The Hierarchy Of Linguistic Varieties In Transnational #Metoo Literature Using Kristen Roupenian’S Short Story “Cat Person” As A Case Study, Emily Rosman

Research Days Posters 2022

In 2017 during the height of the #MeToo movement, Kristen Roupenian’s short story “Cat Person” was published in The New Yorker and subsequently went viral online. On its surface, the story follows a bad date between a college student named Margot and a 34-year-old man named Robert, but subtly speaks to larger issues including sexual consent and a woman’s struggle for power in a patriarchal society. In her writing, the author adheres to the linguistic varieties expected of a short story author, but challenges those expected of a woman and a writer submitting to The New Yorker. Her decisions when …

Fruits Of Our Labor: Exploring The Impacts Of A Nonprofit Seed Bank On Indigenous Communities In The Southwestern United States, Rachel Mary Davis Jan 2022

Fruits Of Our Labor: Exploring The Impacts Of A Nonprofit Seed Bank On Indigenous Communities In The Southwestern United States, Rachel Mary Davis

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the ways that the nonprofit Native Seeds/SEARCH, of Tucson, Arizona interfaces with Indigenous communities and the local seed and food systems in the Southwest United States. The thesis argues that Native seed and food sovereignty have different meanings for different Indigenous people, and that nonprofits working with Indigenous communities need to consider input from them when deciding how to catalogue, regenerate and sustain healthy grow outs for the future, especially in the light of climate change and drought.

Finding A Place For Women Of Color: An Examination Of Definitions Of Inclusion, Neoliberalism, And Their Effects On Women Of Color In Higher Education, Xochitl Husted Jan 2022

Finding A Place For Women Of Color: An Examination Of Definitions Of Inclusion, Neoliberalism, And Their Effects On Women Of Color In Higher Education, Xochitl Husted

Pitzer Senior Theses

This qualitative study analyzed the ways in which definitions of inclusion differ among classroom actors within discussion based classrooms at Cactus College, a predominately white, small, private, liberal arts college in Southern California. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how variations in definitions of inclusion affect the experiences of women of color in higher education. The results of this study indicated that all definitions of inclusion, regardless of respondent demographics, were embedded with democratic values. These democratic values included: acknowledgement, rhetoric, participation, engagement, community, belonging, and understanding. However, women of color conceived acknowledgement differently, compared to their white …

Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2022

Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

BYU Studies

Because twenty-first-century public discourse in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems to feature the language of covenant more and more often, it may be helpful to step back and reexamine the scriptural and historical backgrounds for covenant theology and terminology. When the Restoration took shape in the first half of the nineteenth century, it was dependent primarily on the language of the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible and contemporary Protestant teachings for a context in which to interpret the language of Joseph Smith’s revelations and the Book of Mormon. After two centuries of modern linguistic …

Zeptah And Egyptes, Stephen O. Smoot, John Gee, Kerry Muhlestein, John S. Thompson

BYU Studies

The Book of Abraham describes how “the land of Egypt [was] first discovered by a woman, who was the daughter of Ham, and the daughter of Egyptus” (Abr. 1:23). This woman “discovered the land [when] it was under water, who afterward settled her sons in it; and thus, from Ham, sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land.” Thereafter “the first government of Egypt was established by Pharaoh, the eldest son of Egyptus, the daughter of Ham” (vv. 24–25).

This Land Is Your Land: Andrei Bitov Travels Through The Caucasus, José Vergara Jan 2022

This Land Is Your Land: Andrei Bitov Travels Through The Caucasus, José Vergara

Russian Faculty Research and Scholarship

The present article examines Andrei Bitov’s Lessons of Armenia (Uroki Аrmenii) and A Georgian Album (Gruzinskii al’bom) as examples of subversive late-Soviet travel writing. While some scholars have noted imperialist tendencies in the two travelogues, I argue that Bitov effectively challenges the colonial perspective. Besides considering the Soviet state’s push for travel writing and tourism while Bitov was writing his texts, the article uses Mary Louise Pratt’s deconstruction of colonialist travel writing as a theoretical framework. Adapting and extending her work, I examine how Bitov consistently deploys and subverts three key devices: mastery of the seen/scene, …

Contingent Catastrophe Or Agonistic Advantage: The Rhetoric Of Violence In Classical Athenian Curses, Radcliffe Edmonds Iii Jan 2022

Contingent Catastrophe Or Agonistic Advantage: The Rhetoric Of Violence In Classical Athenian Curses, Radcliffe Edmonds Iii

Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

The surprising absence of violent language from classical Athenian curses is best understood as a rhetorical strategy appropriate for getting the divine powers to enact the curser's desire to harm his or her enemies and to gain an advantage in the particular agonistic context. A contrast with the extravagantly violent language of other contemporary curses, which call for unmitigated catastrophe to befall their targets, shows that the fundamental difference between these curses is the audience that they primarily address, which shapes the nature of the request that is made in the imprecation. Whereas contingent curses primarily address the human community …

Schemata: The Language Of The Body In Middle Byzantine Illuminated Manuscripts, Nava Streiter Jan 2022

Schemata: The Language Of The Body In Middle Byzantine Illuminated Manuscripts, Nava Streiter

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Representations of body language add a vital layer of meaning to middle Byzantine figural art, and they deserve systematic scholarly attention. My dissertation offers a method for unpicking the meanings of individual movements, and, more importantly, it explores the underlying cultural concerns that shaped the form of the body in middle Byzantine art. I argue that Byzantine images of body language are intentionally schematic and programmatic. By combining a restricted vocabulary of motion with pared-down renderings of physical forms, Byzantine artists engaged the vital force of embodied expression, while also transfiguring the body into a metaphoric representation of disembodied ideas …

Listening: The Heart Of Welcoming The Stranger In Outreach Ministry, Teddi L. Callahan Jan 2022

Listening: The Heart Of Welcoming The Stranger In Outreach Ministry, Teddi L. Callahan

Doctor of Ministry Doctoral Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore how listening without judging and spiritual direction can create more opportunities for outreach ministers to positively engage with people being viewed as different or as “the stranger.” Although there have been many studies about providing spiritual direction to people identified as experiencing addiction, incarceration, being unhoused, and more, this study was motivated by observing the pain caused to people receiving services in outreach ministry due to being viewed as “the stranger.” In this study, I explored how outreach ministers can work more effectively to engage compassionately with the stranger and begin the …

Linguistic Graphs And Their Applications, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2022

Linguistic Graphs And Their Applications, W. B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The authors define the notion of directed linguistic graphs and linguistic-weighted graphs.

The second chapter discusses all types of linguistic graphs, linguistic dyads, linguistic triads, linguistic wheels, complete linguistic graphs, connected linguistic graphs, disconnected linguistic graphs, and linguistic components of the graphs. Further we define the notion of linguistic subgraphs of a linguistic graph. The third chapter also introduces the notion of Linguistic Cognitive Maps (LCMs) analogous to Fuzzy Cognitive maps (FCMs). We also propose Linguistic relational Maps, which are analogous to Fuzzy Relational Maps. These models find applications in problems whose data is unsupervised, but the values are linguistic.
