Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This study explores the multifaceted landscape of Soviet science from the end of World War II to the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. It examines the interplay between scientific innovation and political ideology, highlighting how the state shaped research agendas and scientific practices during a period marked by both significant achievements and profound challenges. Through an analysis of key scientific institutions, prominent figures, and pivotal projects, the study illustrates the tensions between ideological constraints and the pursuit of knowledge. Additionally, it addresses the impacts of international collaboration and competition during the Cold War, revealing how these dynamics influenced scientific …

Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer Jan 2022

Ecstasy, Confession, Image, And Silence In Buber, Bergman, And Godard, Karl E. Toepfer

Open Educational Resources

This essay discusses the contrasting attitudes toward ecstatic experience as described in Martin Buber's book Ekstatische Konfessionen (1909). Ingmar Bergman's film Persona (1966), and Jean-Luc Godard's film Weekend (1967). The attitude toward ecstasy depends heavily on the use of language and confidence in language to represent ecstatic experience. Buber, Bergman. and Godard share little, if any, perception on the relation between language, speech, and ecstasy.

The Text(Tiles) Of Adinkra Symbols: West African Art, Gender, & Poetic Translations, Rachel A. Ansong Jan 2022

The Text(Tiles) Of Adinkra Symbols: West African Art, Gender, & Poetic Translations, Rachel A. Ansong

Open Access Dissertations

The Text(tiles) of Adinkra Symbols: West African Art, Gender, & Poetic Translations is a critical and creative dissertation that interrogates Adinkra symbols from West Africa. These symbols, rediscovered in the nineteenth century, serve as codes, communicating warnings and meanings of proverbs to recipients. Many individual Adinkra symbols are abstract ideographs of the philosophical ideas they represent. My work expands on existing scholarship and further elaborates how Adinkra symbols moved from Ghana to the United States (U.S). Specifically, I trace how these creative-pictorial-philosophical symbols evolved in use as artistic mediums of expression of African/Black tradition and identity for the migrant African/Black …

Learning To Visualize: Middle-Level Learners Analyzing And Designing Science Infographics, Mark Davis

Open Access Dissertations

Infographics are part of daily life because of the rise of digital media and technology, as learners now encounter a barrage of images carefully designed to convey data and information through social media. But what happens in the classroom when young learners first encounter this expressive genre? This case study examined a unit of instruction on analyzing and creating infographics in a content-area middle school classroom. Data included classroom observations through video and audio recording, examination of a student graphic organizer and student-designed infographics, and semi-structured interviews with students and the facilitating teacher. Results show that students learned how to …

Broken Dozer, Haunted Vale: The Ecopoetics Of Ambient Language, Andrew Merecicky Jan 2022

Broken Dozer, Haunted Vale: The Ecopoetics Of Ambient Language, Andrew Merecicky

Open Access Dissertations

Broken Dozer, Haunted Vale is a collection of poetry that explores the principles of ambient language poetics as articulated in its critical introduction. Rather than a poetic focused on a set of thematic concerns, ambient language poetics is an ecopoetic that addresses the writing process itself and proposes an alternative to the internal/external spatial metaphor that inspires creative writing pedagogy premised on the urgency of self-expression. The poems within the collection are an experimental inquiry into what might be possible in making poems if the activity of reading/writing is not motivated primarily by representational and mimetic aims that are described …

Black Feminist Autoethnography: How Identity Can Affect Peer Review Practices In The College Writing Classroom, Eileen M. James

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores the importance of embodied teaching pedagogy as it relates to peer review practices in the college writing classroom. This work uses autoethnography as a research method, exploring issues of (dis)embodiment and experiences with collaborative learning in classrooms. In addition to a review of applicable literature focused on peer review practices, writing pedagogy, and Black Feminist Autoethnography, this dissertation contains narrative sections from the viewpoint of the subject--a Black woman--as a student, an instructor, and a researcher working to examine her experiences and how they demonstrate the need for embodied approaches in the classroom. The purpose of this …

Interest Points Analysis For Internet Forum Based On Long-Short Windows Similarity, Xinghai Ju, Jicang Lu, Xiangyang Luo, Gang Zhou, Shiyu Wang, Shunhang Li, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

For Internet forum Points of Interest (PoI), existing analysis methods are usually lack of usability analysis under different conditions and ignore the long-term variation, which lead to blindness in method selection. To address this problem, this paper proposed a PoI variation prediction framework based on similarity analysis between long and short windows. Based on the framework, this paper presented 5 PoI analysis algorithms which can be categorized into 2 types, i.e., the traditional sequence analysis methods such as autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA), support vector regressor (SVR), and the deep learning methods such as convolutional neural network (CNN), long-short …

The Syntax Of Passives And Related Constructions In Mandarin Chinese, Shangyan Pan Jan 2022

The Syntax Of Passives And Related Constructions In Mandarin Chinese, Shangyan Pan

Honors Theses

This thesis discusses the Mandarin Chinese passive, a construction that differs in significant ways from its better known, European counterparts. While the passive is one of the most well-studied constructions in syntax, the passive in Chinese remains understudied and not as well understood. The thesis offers an analysis of multiple passive markers in Chinese, focusing on bei and gei. Superficially, the two markers both participate in passive and passive-like constructions. However, upon closer scrutiny, it is demonstrated that only bei qualifies as a true passive marker, while gei is shown to belong to a more general category of Non-Active …

Three Kinds Of Fault: Understanding The Purpose And Function Of Causation In Tort Law, Marin Roger Scordato Jan 2022

Three Kinds Of Fault: Understanding The Purpose And Function Of Causation In Tort Law, Marin Roger Scordato

Scholarly Articles

Causation is a concept of enormous importance in the law. In just the last two years, the United States Supreme Court has explicitly considered its importance and meaning on at least three occasions, in areas of the law as diverse as specific personal jurisdiction, Title IX, and Section 1981. It has also been the subject of sustained scholarly examination and debate. In no area of the law is causation as foundational and omnipresent as in tort law, and in no sphere within tort law is it more prevalent than in its dominant cause of action, negligence. Unsurprisingly then, the causation …

Elementary Pre-Service Teacher Educators' Digital Writing Knowledge And Practices: A Qualitative Case Study, Kaira Kelly-Howard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Because preservice teachers will be tasked with the responsibility of preparing their future students for effective communication and engagement in our global society, the experiences and practices related to digital writing that preservice teachers engage in before they begin their practice as full-time educators is critical to their professional development. This qualitative case study investigated two research questions, "How do teacher educators describe their technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge of digital writing?" and "How is teacher educators' knowledge of digital writing practices evident in their teaching?" This study took place at a large university in the Southeastern United States. Documents, …

Persecution And Labor Migrations Due To Corporate “Environmental” Exploitation: Waiting For The Unhrc’S Binding Treaty On Transnational Business Activities?, Riccardo Vecellio Segate Jan 2022

Persecution And Labor Migrations Due To Corporate “Environmental” Exploitation: Waiting For The Unhrc’S Binding Treaty On Transnational Business Activities?, Riccardo Vecellio Segate

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

Policy debates on the rights and international status of climate refugees, environmental migrants, or environmentally displaced persons have unleashed detailed scholarly commentaries over the last decade, and virtually all standpoints have been scrutinized in literature already. Nevertheless, one aspect of this debate has gone somewhat off the radar in recent years: the (co-)responsibilities of incorporated subsidiaries of transnational corporations in triggering or exacerbating pseudo-environmentally motivated mass-movements of workers and related strata of the populations domiciled where these corporations operate. Despite such neglect, mentioned exploitative occurrences only increased in recent years, and the trend speaks for their further expansion …

Figural Solidarity: Grappling With Meaning In Comics, Jean Braithwaite, Kai Mikkonen Jan 2022

Figural Solidarity: Grappling With Meaning In Comics, Jean Braithwaite, Kai Mikkonen

Creative Writing Faculty Publications

Thierry Groensteen 's concept of iconic solidarity (IS) is one of the most familiar terms in comics studies. This article introduces a new term and new theoretical concept, figural solidarity .(FS), as a critical adaptation of Groensteen's notion (1999; 2011); FS provides additional explanatory power especially in the central cases of narrative comics. FS is based on the co-referentiality of sequential figures, which ensures the cohesion of the visual narrative and provides its driving force. The introductory section compares empirical eye-tracking data with the hypothetical top-down strategies of FS-influenced readers as they focus on recurring characters to understand the …

Listening To The Unheard: Perceptions, Goals, And Challenges Of Latinx Small Business Owners In Suburban Cook County, Kendra Shaw Jan 2022

Listening To The Unheard: Perceptions, Goals, And Challenges Of Latinx Small Business Owners In Suburban Cook County, Kendra Shaw

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

This applied research project examines the perceptions, goals, and challenges Latinx small business owners face when participating in daily business activities and attempting to access resources. Through nine in-depth interviews with business owners in Berwyn, Illinois, and personal observations and professional discussions, this capstone identifies critical barriers, such as: language, “missing links” to resources, exclusionary marketing practices, and weak connections to financial institutions and governmental entities. In response, this study offers recommendations to economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, city governments, and business communities. Specifically, entities need to embrace inclusive marketing practices, design financial programs through a more equitable lens, …

The findings were plotted on an impact …

Early Childhood Educators’ Perspectives On The Challenges Of Including Inclusive Literature And Implementing Culturally Informed Teaching Practices, Victoria Campbell Locane Jan 2022

Early Childhood Educators’ Perspectives On The Challenges Of Including Inclusive Literature And Implementing Culturally Informed Teaching Practices, Victoria Campbell Locane

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Even though educators are being encouraged to use culturally informed teaching practices in early childhood classrooms with a focus on including culturally inclusive literature, due to homogenous classroom libraries and minimal training, early childhood educators are challenged to follow these practices. The purpose and research questions for this basic qualitative study explored early childhood educators’ perspectives of the challenges of these practices. Using current research and the conceptual framework of critical race theory in education, research and interview questions were developed. Ten early educators were interviewed using the developed interview protocol. Four themes emerged during open and axial coding that …

A Refugee Resource Guide 2022, Kerri Ullucci

Education Faculty Publications

Rhode Island has long hosted refugees from around the world. Schools in RI, particularly those in Providence, currently enroll hundreds of refugee youth. After spending a semester conducting research and teaching in a school that serves refugee youth, it became clear that explicit teacher training about this population rarely occurs. This guide seeks to provide resources in which to address this need.

At Roger Williams University, I teach courses in our Education programs about race, class, and culture. My professional research centers on the same topics. While on sabbatical, I created several documents for the principal I worked with, to …

A Declaration Of Rights Lost: The Diminution Of Tennesseans' Civil Rights, Bailey D. Barnes Jan 2022

A Declaration Of Rights Lost: The Diminution Of Tennesseans' Civil Rights, Bailey D. Barnes

Faculty Publications

The Constitution of the State of Tennessee, in its current form, offers to the citizens of the Volunteer State a "Declaration of Rights" that prevents abuses by those in power against the governed. To paraphrase late Associate United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the Tennessee Constitution, which was adopted following the state's secession from and eventual return to the United States during the Civil War, continues to serve as the charter of Tennesseans' liberties. Indeed, the Tennessee Constitution's Declaration of Rights proclaims in the very first section, "[A]ll power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are …
