The impact of COVID-19 on systemic immunity in the general population has been well characterized, however the short-term effects of COVID-19 infection on innate salivary immunity in elite-level athletes are unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether elite college football athletes had altered salivary immunity following the CDC-recommended isolation post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Salivary samples were obtained from fourteen elite football players who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (n = 14), immediately after CDC-recommended isolation (average days = 14 ± 2 days) and fifteen controls who remained uninfected with SARS-CoV-2. Biomarkers of innate salivary immunity (sIgA and alpha-amylase), antimicrobial proteins (AMPs, i.e., …

Impact Of Hospital Inventory Management Of Ppe On State-Level Healthcare Worker Infections During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nidhal Bouazizi
College of Business Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on the personal protective equipment (PPE) supply chain and its inability to keep up with the fluctuating demands of a global pandemic. Limited research examines the resilience of the PPE supply chain in times of stress, and very few studies rely on quantitative retrospective analysis. This dissertation studies the impact of hospital inventory management, a portion of PPE supply chain preparedness, on infections in healthcare workers (HCWs). Our research shows that there exists a statistically significant negative relationship between PPE preparedness and infections for HCWs, but this relationship is only significant for N95 …

Fragmentation Drives Dominant Plant Encroachment On A Horizontal Wastewater Treatment Levee, Joia S. Fishman
Master's Theses
Urban coastal wetlands protect humans from sea-level rise while providing valuable habitat for wildlife. Degradation and loss of these wetlands threaten urban infrastructure such as wastewater treatment facilities. Nature-based adaptive solutions with the combined purposes of bioremediation, coastal defense, and habitat creation are being tested to make communities safer and more resilient. The current research examines a 6-year-old experimental horizontal levee at the Oro Loma Sanitary District in San Lorenzo, California. Using horizontal transects and quadrat sampling, I compare the success of two planting strategies – a wet meadow and a riparian scrub community – on an ecotone slope. I …

The Role Of School Counselors In Advocating For Social Justice For All Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Amna Jaffer
Dissertations
The field of K–12 school counseling has evolved to embrace social–emotional and mental wellness aspects of students in addition to academic and career/college readiness. Social justice advocacy has been added to the role of school counselor by professional and educational entities. What is less clear is how well-versed school counselors are in social justice advocacy competencies, whether they are equipped to lead and advocate for social justice, barriers and accomplishments in doing so, and ways in which this role may be further developed and integrated into the field of school counseling, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. As …

Cardiology Implications Of Ed Covid-19 Patients In An Underserved Rural Health Care Environment, Pedro Colio
Dissertations
Background/Purpose: Positive COVID-19 patients with chronic comorbidities have been associated with severe cardiac complications (e.g., STEMI, NSTEMI, myocarditis, pericarditis, AF) specifically among underserved communities. Acute STEMI and NSTEMI are cardiac conditions associated with ruptured atherosclerotic plaque leading to significant myocardial injury. AF, the most common arrhythmia leading to cerebrovascular accidents, is also common in hospitalized patients with severe illnesses. Myocarditis and pericarditis are inflammatory heart conditions associated with acute viral infections. According to the literature, these cardiac issues have been linked as complications of COVID-19. COVID 19 is an emerging, complex, and costly public health challenge globally with potential lifelong …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
HIV-1 protease (PR) is a viral enzyme that cleaves the Gag and Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors to convert them into their functional forms, a process which is essential to generate infectious viral particles. Due to its broad substrate specificity, HIV-1 PR can also cleave certain host cell proteins. Several studies have identified host cell substrates of HIV-1 PR and described the potential impact of their cleavage on HIV-1-infected cells. Of particular interest is the interaction between PR and the caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 8 (CARD8) inflammasome. A recent study demonstrated that CARD8 can sense HIV-1 PR activity and induce cell death. …

Patent law in the United States has been in the process of changing in the last few years due to a series of Supreme Court cases and congressional action. This Article gives an overview of these changes and their implications.
In 2010 and 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court decided four landmark patent cases, each time affirming the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. On June 28, 2010, the Court unanimously held in Bilski v. Kappos that a patent application for claims involving hedging risk in energy markets involved non-patentable subject matter. On May 31, 2011, the Court held 8–1 …
Parasite Hospitality: How Parasitic Helminth Worms Help Researchers Prevent Type 1 Diabetes., Brooke Wynalda
Parasite Hospitality: How Parasitic Helminth Worms Help Researchers Prevent Type 1 Diabetes., Brooke Wynalda
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
The hygiene hypothesis describes how human exposure to parasitic helminth worms (and other microorganisms) impacts immune system functions. The potential impacts include protection against autoimmune and allergic disease. Epidemiological disease mapping reveals cases of allergic and autoimmune disease are disproportionately concentrated in urban, developed countries where there is less risk of parasitic infection. This suggests an inverse correlation between autoimmune diseases and likelihood of helminth infection. These observations have led researchers to posit that helminth worms have coevolved alongside their human host. This hypothesis is supported by helminth antagonization of human anti-inflammatory responses. There is some evidence to suggest that …

The Influence Of Social Capital On Drought-Caused Climate Change: Low-Income Farmer Adaptation., Alex Chapman
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Climate change continues to destroy ecosystems, cause extreme shifts in weather patterns, and threaten the livelihood of people across the globe. Drought has become one of the most pervasive weather changes, with a particularly hard impact on low-income farmers. In order to combat the impacts of drought, farmers now must take adaptive measures, which include investing in technology, shifting planting schedules, employing different irrigation methods, and more. Social capital has been recognized as an important element in supporting livelihoods, yet it is less clear how social capital influences adaptation to climate change. This paper is a literature review, examining the …

Neutralization capacity of antibodies against Omicron after a prior SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents is not well studied. Therefore, we evaluated virus-neutralizing capacity against SARS-CoV-2 Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Omicron variants by age-stratified analyses (5 years of age. As expected, convalescent pediatric COVID-19 and MIS-C cohorts demonstrate higher neutralization titers than hospitalized acute COVID-19 patients. Overall, children and adolescents show some loss of cross-neutralization against all variants, with the most pronounced loss against Omicron. In contrast to SARS-CoV-2 infection, children vaccinated twice demonstrated higher titers against Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Omicron. These findings can influence transmission, re-infection …

The Trips Agreement: Is It Beneficial To The Developing World, Or Simply A Tool Used To Protect Pharmaceutical Profits For Developed World Manufacturers?, Clark A.D. Wilson
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
There is an ongoing struggle between the rights of pharmaceutical patent owners and those in desperate need of the drugs for whom they hold the patents. Further technological innovation requires that there be sufficient incentive to research and develop (R&D) new drugs, but once these drugs are approved and protected by patent law, they should be made available to people who will suffer without them. In this regard, a system of patent rights which is too protective will hinder availability by restricting widespread dissemination to the public. On the other hand, a system of patent rights which is too weak …

Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABSC) is a rapidly growing mycobacterium and may rarely cause disseminated infections in immunocompromised patients. In patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), it peaks between the ages of 11 and 15 years. We present a five-month-old infant with coexisting CF and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) who had pulmonary and cutaneous dissemination of MABSC infection. The management of this disseminated infection in an infant with two coexisting chronic diseases was challenging and resulted in the rapid deterioration of lung function and progression of PFIC to liver cirrhosis with a fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing adoption rate of tracking technologies in hospitals in the United States, few empirical studies have examined the factors involved in such adoption within different use contexts (eg, clinical and supply chain use contexts). To date, no study has systematically examined how governance structures impact technology adoption in different use contexts in hospitals. Given that the hospital governance structure fundamentally governs health care workflows and operations, understanding its critical role provides a solid foundation from which to explore factors involved in the adoption of tracking technologies in hospitals. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare critical factors associated …

Microbial Sociality In Biofilms, Swetha Kasetty
Microbial Sociality In Biofilms, Swetha Kasetty
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Biofilms are communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces through various self-secreted matrix materials. Biofilms are dynamic communities with extensive interactions between their residents. Microorganisms compete, cooperate, and communicate with each other in biofilms. These ecological interactions determine the emergence or loss of strains/species and are critical in the formation and proliferation of biofilms. Furthermore, most natural biofilms are formed by multiple microbial species and strains and these interactions within the biofilm dramatically influence community composition and structure over time. Microbial interactions also influence clinically relevant outcomes such as antibiotic resistance and host virulence. In this thesis we explore the potential …
