Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Finding a mental health center that fits the needs of an individual can take time. Some individuals must travel to different states and enter large metropolises to find the specific type of support they need for their mental health journey. This can mean that for extended periods of time, as individuals go through residential treatment, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and/or intensive outpatient programs (IOP), they can not only find themselves in a completely new community, but also entirely removed from nature. For this reason, my thesis focused on creating a method to reconnect humans ‘trapped’ in an urban setting with …

Devil’S Lettuce Or Heaven Sent? How The Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis Impacts Rates Of Schizophrenia In Washington State., Elizabeth C. Lucas
Honors Projects
Washington State legalized the manufacturing, processing, and distribution of recreational cannabis with the passing of Initiative 502 in November of 2012. As of 2021, there are over 500 retail stores with active licenses to sell (Cannabis License Applicants, 2021). Since then, public opinion polls and state-wide surveys have found a steady increase in the percentage of the population using cannabis, including children under the age of 18. Schizophrenia is a complex disease thought to be influenced by several genetic and environmental factors. The association between cannabis use and the development of schizophrenia has been well documented (Marconi et al., 2016 …

Animal-Assisted Programs In Deaf Education, Alexis Wright
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Dr. Boris Levinson first recognized animal-assisted therapy as a child psychologist in the 1970s (Fine, Beck, & Ng, 2019). After this recognition, there has been an increased usage of animal-assisted interventions (AAI), leading to more research in this field (Fine, Beck, & Ng, 2019). Many studies have shown the effects of animal-assisted programs in classrooms (Prothmann, Ettrich, and Prothmann, 2009, as cited in Grandin, Fine, O'Haire, Carlisle, & Bowers, 2015; Bassette & Taber-Doughty, 2016; Kirnan, Siminerio, & Wong, 2016; Kropp & Shupp, 2017), but none of these have focused on Deaf schools and programs. This study aims to partially fill …

Evaluation Of Cobb Mv X Cobb 500 Broiler Digestible Lysine Requirement And Response To Various Nutrient Regimens During The Finisher Phase, Dalton Gerard Dennehy
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research evaluated the dLys requirement and the impact of varying dLys and AME on Cobb MV x Cobb 500 broilers during the starter and grower phases, leaving the finisher phase to be determined. Experiment 1 estimated the finisher dLys requirement to range from 0.748-1.32% for males and 0.752-1.292% for females. Male broilers were more responsive to increasing dLys than females, though in general, increasing dLys improved performance and processing. Experiment 2 determined the effects of varying finisher dLys and AME on broiler performance and processing. Increasing dLys improved BWG, FCR, ALI, and breast yield while decreasing FI and fat …
Mapping For Meaning In A Multimodal Web: Advancing Learning Using Web-Based Instruction That Stimulates Wayfinding Behavior, Rhonda Lee Thomas
Mapping For Meaning In A Multimodal Web: Advancing Learning Using Web-Based Instruction That Stimulates Wayfinding Behavior, Rhonda Lee Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
When learners cannot find their way through web-based instructional information, they become lost, as a result, learning stops. The operations of human wayfinding behavior (or simply, wayfinding) are the cognitive processes activated when humans must make decisions on how they will move through, primarily, novel situations. This paper examines the utility of incorporating the operations of wayfinding into instructional design models to reduce the likelihood of learners becoming lost in web-based instructional information.
The Effects Of Astrocytic Derived Insulin-Like Growth Factor (Igf-1) On Cognition And Astrocytes, Destiny Wilson
The Effects Of Astrocytic Derived Insulin-Like Growth Factor (Igf-1) On Cognition And Astrocytes, Destiny Wilson
Honors Theses
Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a neuroendocrine signaling hormone that plays a vital role in growth and development, as well as learning and memory. Inhibition of this hormone results in cognitive impairments like those seen with age-related decline. While a majority of research has focused on the role of IGF-1 on neurons, the role of astrocytes still needs to be explored. Our research investigates how astrocytes and cognition are affected as a result of direct regulation of localized IGF-1 production in early development and after puberty. Preliminary studies in our laboratory established a connection between IGF-1 and glial fibrillary …

Psychological Trauma Alters T-Lymphocyte Inflammation And Redox Through Sympathetic Mechanisms, Safwan K. Elkhatib
Theses & Dissertations
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a devastating psychiatric disorder characterized by distinctive symptom clusters, including intrusive memories (i.e., flashbacks), avoidance of related stimuli, affective changes, and hyperarousal. Strikingly, patients with PTSD face a significantly increased risk for a number of inflammation-driven pathologies, ranging from cardiovascular to autoimmune disease. Yet, the exact etiology of this increased risk remains unknown. The immune system is known to be strongly influenced by the sympathetic nervous system, and sympathetic overactivity is a hallmark of PTSD. Lymphoid organs, such as the spleen, are richly innervated by sympathetic nerve fibers which terminate near adaptive immune …

Circadian Rhythm And Exercises: How Time Of Day Effects Physiological Variables Responsible For Exercise Performance, Chidozie C. Nwankwo
Circadian Rhythm And Exercises: How Time Of Day Effects Physiological Variables Responsible For Exercise Performance, Chidozie C. Nwankwo
2022 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In contemporary physiology, the circadian rhythm influences more than the neurotransmitters melatonin and cortisol. Monitored from hypothalamic pacemakers and suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), metabolic and physiological structures are under a biomolecular schedule. Likewise, peripheral tissues are coordinated through the hormonal, autonomic, and behavior stimuli that direct the metabolic processes that occur in the skeletomuscular system. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether the time of day could significantly affect the metabolic response to an anaerobic capacity test. Subjects had weight, height, and body fat percentage (BF%) recorded before the Wingate Anaerobic Test. Resting blood lactic levels were documented …

The Health In Mental Health: Exploring Individualized Holistic Health Practices As A Process To Transform Mental Health, Craig Craig Keaton
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Mental health problems are on the rise, especially among college students. Problematically, the two most common approaches - pharmacotherapy and talk therapy - are either grounded in a limited and suspect evidence base or is not an approach that reaches most people in need of and wanting mental health support. There is, however, a growing body of evidence supporting a health-based approach to mental health, including the application of nature, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle. As well, with an expansive definition of health, there are even more practices, such as art, writing, and social connection to support better health and mental …

Two Person Interaction Recognition Based On A Dual-Coded Modified Metacognitive (Dcmmc) Extreme Learning Machine, Saman Nikzad, Afshin Ebrahimi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Human action recognition has been an active research area for over three decades. However, state-of-the-art proposed algorithms are still far from developing error-free and fully-generalized systems to perform accurate interaction recognition. This work proposes a new method for two-person interaction recognition from videos, based on well-known cognitive theories. The main idea is to perform classification based on a theory of cognition known as dual coding theory. The theory states that human brain processes and represents two types of information to learn/classify data named analogue and symbolic codes, i.e. (verbal as analogue and visual as symbolic). To implement such a theory …
Influences Of Drosophila Circadian Clock On Sugar-Mediated Physiological Changes, Erica E Hassoun
Influences Of Drosophila Circadian Clock On Sugar-Mediated Physiological Changes, Erica E Hassoun
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
It is widely known that high sugar consumption and poor sleep are detrimental to human health. Both are risk factors for obesity, which can lead to conditions such as heart disease. Despite this connection between sugar and sleep, little is known about how circadian clock dysfunction affects the physiological changes caused by increased sugar consumption. In this thesis, a mutant line of the model organism Drosophila melanogaster (ClkJrk, which contains a nonfunctional circadian rhythm gene known as Clk) that leads to circadian dysfunction, was exposed to a high sugar diet to observe how Clk affects sugar-related changes to …

Generation Of Baiap3 Expression Construct For Subcellular Localization And Phenotypic Rescue, Ireland Ann Little
Honors Theses
Mast cells secrete a variety of biological mediators crucial for innate and adaptive immunity. One such mediator is Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF). TNF released from mast cells and other immune cells has been shown to elicit complex signaling pathways in target cells, resulting in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and/or immune cell recruitment. At the molecular level, TNF secretion/exocytosis is mediated by soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors (SNAREs) and other regulatory proteins that work together to promote the fusion between secretory granules and the plasma membrane. One regulatory protein, Munc13-4, which facilitates the priming of secretory granules, was recently …
Effects Of Cognitive Style On Food Perception And Eating Behavior, Thadeus Lyndon Beekman
Effects Of Cognitive Style On Food Perception And Eating Behavior, Thadeus Lyndon Beekman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Within the fields of psychology, notably cultural psychology, the analytic-holistic cognitive style theory has been introduced, developed, fine-tuned, and validated across a wide range of situations, stimuli, and populations. This research, combined with recent applications of the analytic-holistic theory, suggests that the differences in analytic or holistic tendencies of individuals in food, sensory, and consumer tests can impact food perception and associated behaviors. This dissertation aimed to investigate the impact of analytic-holistic cognitive styles of consumers in food situations. The first objective to accomplish this goal was to conduct exploratory research to identify if and where the analytic-holistic theory may …
Hyper Stable Variants Of Fgf-1-Fgf-2 Dimer, Madison Shields Mcclanahan
Hyper Stable Variants Of Fgf-1-Fgf-2 Dimer, Madison Shields Mcclanahan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGFs), including FGF-1 and FGF-2, are proteins that play a crucial role in cell proliferation, cell differentiation, cell migration, and tissue repair. FGF-1 and FGF-2 are useful in accelerating the healing process in the human body; however, these proteins are naturally thermally unstable, resulting in a relatively low half-life in vivo. 1,8 In efforts to improve the stability of this protein, FGF-1 and FGF-2 proteins are engineered by combining the amino acid sequences of the two proteins to form a heterodimer and obtain novel properties. These two FGF variants are chosen for their specific wound healing capabilities. …

Are Natural Killer Cells Novel Mediators Of The Effects Of Cannabidiol On Mental Health, Sleep Quantity, Sleep Quality, And Immune Function?, Jacob Norbert Kisiolek
Dissertations
Cannabidiol (CBD) has increased in popularity since the United States Farm Bill legalized hemp production in 2018 and is now projected to become a $24.4 billion dollar industry by 2025. Since its legalization, CBD is thought to be an antiepileptic, anxiolytic, and antipsychotic, as well as an agent to improve mental health, quality of life, aspects of sleep and immune function. However, many of these claims lack scientific evidence. The purpose of this randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial was to determine the effects of an 8-week CBD intervention on measures of mental health, sleep quantity, sleep quality, and natural killer …

Developing Hydrogel-Based X-Ray Visualized Implantable Sensors To Non-Invasively Measure Ph For Tracking Tumor Response And Detecting Peritoneal Infections, Kiridena Mudiyanselage Sachindra Dulashini Kiridena
All Dissertations
The goal of my dissertation research is to develop injectable and implantable biosensors to measure tumor pH to study cancer pathophysiology and effectiveness of treatments and peritoneal infections using plain radiography. The pH in cancer tissues plays an important role in determining cancer progression and treatment. Local acidosis is believed to be an indicator of dormant regions that are more resistant to therapies, a contributor to metastasis, and influence immune responses. We are designing a hydrogel-based sensor that can be injected into tumors during needle biopsy procedures and/or procedures to add markers for image-guided therapies. The pH response of the …

Persistent inward currents (PICs) are crucial for initiation, acceleration, and maintenance of motoneuron firing. As PICs are highly sensitive to synaptic inhibition and facilitated by serotonin and noradrenaline, we hypothesised that both reciprocal inhibition (RI) induced by antagonist nerve stimulation and whole-bodyrelaxation (WBR) would reduce PICs in humans. To test this, we estimated PICs using the well-established paired motor unit (MU) technique. High-density surface electromyograms were recorded from gastrocnemius medialis during voluntary, isometric 20-s ramp, plantarflexor contractions and decomposed into MU discharges to calculate delta frequency (ΔF). Moreover, another technique (VibStim), which evokes involuntary contractions proposed to result from PIC …
Becoming Stewards Of Attention: A Theological Appeal, Joshua Gorenflo
Becoming Stewards Of Attention: A Theological Appeal, Joshua Gorenflo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The widespread compromising of attention currently taking place in our digital age is, at least in part, a theological issue necessitating a theological response, which invites an examination of the human person in relation to God. Familiar within the biblical narrative and throughout Christian tradition, I suggest that when the role of steward functions as the operative paradigm for humans, the claims made upon their lives have profound implications for attending within the digital age. More specifically, the steward’s attention becomes a tangible expression of authority and accountability in representation of God’s image to the rest of creation. In pursuit …

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Colon-Targeted Drug Delivery System (CTDDS) is able to improve local therapeutic effects in the treatment of colon-specific diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis (UC), and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). A colon can also be a suitable site for systemic delivery of drugs susceptible to extreme gastric pH, such as peptides and protein therapeutics. The physiological conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and the physicochemical properties of drugs are being considered to develop strategies and approaches to overcome emerging challenges. This review will discuss factors, challenges, strategies, and approaches to developing a colon-targeted drug delivery system.
