Irisin Relaxes Rat Thoracic Aorta Through Inhibiting Signaling Pathways Implicatingprotein Kinase C, Sadetti̇n Demi̇rel, Serdar Şahi̇ntürk, Naci̇ye İşbi̇l, Fadil Özyener
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Irisin, a newly identified exercise-derived myokine, has been found involved in a peripheral vasodilator effect. However, little is known regarding the potential vascular activity of irisin, and the mechanisms underlying its effects on vascular smooth muscle have not been fully elucidated. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of irisin on vascular smooth muscle contractility in rat thoracic aorta, and the hypothesis that protein kinase C (PKC) may have a role in these effects. Materials and methods: Isometric contraction-relaxation responses of thoracic aorta rings were measured with an isolated organ bath model. The steady contraction was induced with …

Background/aim: Irrational drug use not only causes a delay in the treatment of patients, failure to achieve full well-being, drug interactions and side effects, drug resistance but also creates economic negativities such as waste of resources and unnecessary workload. This study aims to investigate the irrational drug use behaviors of individuals over the age of 18 who applied to a university hospital. Materials and methods: This sectional study included 1247 people over the age of 18 who applied for Gazi University Health, Research and Application Center. A questionnaire was applied to the applicants by face-to-face interview technique. Logistic regression analysis …

Background/aim: Cushing's disease (CD), which cannot be controlled by surgery, requires medical treatment. In this situation, treatments with long-term effectiveness and safety profiles are needed. We aimed to evaluate the effects and adverse effects of pasireotide treatment in CD. Materials and methods: Patients who were followed up for CD and treated with pasireotide between 2014-2020 at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, were evaluated retrospectively. The efficacy and adverse effects of pasireotide were evaluated in this study. Results: Thirty-two patients were evaluated. The mean duration of treatment was 26.5 [range, 12.0-37.0] months. The 24-h urinary free cortisol (UFC) decreased 46% during the treatment …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The COVID-19 pandemic majorly disrupted conventional schooling and many countries maintained educational services through distance education. The duration of school closures in Turkey was longer than most OECD countries, thus Turkey prioritized school reopenings in the 2021-2022 academic year to mitigate possible negative outcomes of closures. Here we study the compatibility of implications for school reopenings in Turkey with these practices and assess the first semester of face-to-face schooling. Materials and methods: We have used document analysis to present and compare the practices in Turkey with international practices. We also used a comparative approach to assess the coherence between …

Background/aim: As SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread worldwide, this study brings to light the link that anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist, has in averting grave clinical outcomes. The objectives of this meta-analysis are to investigate the effects of anakinra in interventional groups compared to control/standard of care groups on mortality along with the provision of a prevalence estimate of the variables associated with death (C-reactive protein-CRP, ferritin, acute respiratory distress syndrome-ARDS). Materials and methods: According to the PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines, a systematic search was conducted from December 19, 2020, until December 10, 2021, with keywords including COVID-19, coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, …

The Separation Of Legislative Powers In The Initiative Process, Anthony Johnstone
The Separation Of Legislative Powers In The Initiative Process, Anthony Johnstone
Nebraska Law Review
Direct democracy cannot implement itself. From Nebraska’s introduction of a state law authorizing the initiative at the local level in 1897,1 through the first constitutional amendments authorizing state-wide initiative processes in several states at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and subsequent efforts to expand the initiative power to approximately half the states,2 legislatures must share the legislative power with the people in states that provide the initiative. After the initial allocation of legislative power to initiative processes, usually through relatively detailed constitutional provisions, state legislatures become responsible for supporting the initiative power. In authorizing initiatives, state constitutions also authorize …

Fifty years ago, in 1972, the United States Supreme Court, in an opinion by its new Chief Justice Warren Burger, issued a landmark prisoners’ rights decision in Morrissey v. Brewer.1 It involved the constitutionality of a parole board’s revocation of paroles without a hearing, an issue that I had considerable involvement in during my law Legal Services Organization (LSO) of Indianapolis—including coauthoring an amicus curiae brief on behalf of Morrissey while the case was pending before the Supreme Court. The fiftieth anniversary of the Morrissey decision has provided the occasion to write a retrospective on the historic decision and …

Social Media For Exploring Adverse Drug Events Associated With Multiple Sclerosis, Nevine Nawar, Omar F. El-Gayar, Loknath Sai Ambati, Giridhar Bojja
Research & Publications
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects 400,000 people in the USA and almost 2.5 million people worldwide. There is no cure for MS. A variety of disease-modifying therapies are currently available. They aim to reduce disease activity that ultimately leads to disability. However, such drugs have adverse effects that vary widely among patients making the choice of a suitable drug particularly challenging. With the proliferation of social media, this research aims to understand the perspective of people with MS on social media (Twitter) in regard to Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) and to analyze ADEs as perceived by MS patients. This study helps …

Background: Social media usage is one of the most popular online activities, but with it comes privacy concerns due to how personal data are handled by these social networking sites. Prior literature aimed at identifying users’ privacy concerns as well as user behavior associated with privacy mitigation strategies and policies. However, OSN users continue to divulge private information online and privacy remains an issue. Accordingly, this review aims to present extant research on this topic, and to highlight any potential research gaps. Method: The paper presents a systematic literature review for the period 2006 - 2021, in which 33 full …
