Introduction: An adequate healthcare workforce remains essential for the health of rural communities. Strategies to address rural health workforce challenges have often centred on the medical and nursing workforce; however, addressing the rural pharmacist workforce also remains critical as they are often the first point of contact for health advice. Initiatives have increased pharmacist supply; however, key issues such as poor attraction, recruitment, and retention to rural areas remain. The aim of this study was to support the recruitment and retention of pharmacists in rural areas of Australia through the development of the Pharmacy Community Apgar Questionnaire (PharmCAQ).

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is now well known and is being diagnosed more frequently than years ago. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2017, the combined estimated prevalence of ASD is 14.6 per 1,000 (1 in 68). Estimated prevalence among children age 8 was significantly higher among boys (23.6 per 1,000). ASD is a complicated and challenging disorder for every caregiver, health care providers, schools, and the overall community. However, caregivers of children with ASD receive little support. Little is known about what support is available for caregivers; not much research is available on how to …

Finding ways to help nursing students understand the application of didactic content can be challenging for faculty. One challenge faculty face is motivating students with thought provoking and memorable content using traditional methods. Educational games and gaming attributes have been shown to affect student motivation and support learning. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge, filling a knowledge gap, regarding which gaming attributes motivate nursing students to become engaged in course content that is not graded. Badges were used as a reward system to examine if nursing students would complete an increased number of non-graded case studies, and …

Phenotyping approaches have been considered as a vital component in crop breeding programs to improve crops and develop new high-yielding cultivars. However, traditional field-based monitoring methods are expensive, invasive, and time-intensive. Moreover, data collected using satellite and airborne platforms are either costly or limited by their spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we investigated whether low-cost unmanned/unoccupied aerial systems (UASs) data can be used to estimate winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) nitrogen (N) content, structural traits including plant height, fresh and dry biomass, and leaf area index (LAI) as well as yield during different winter wheat growing stages. To achieve …

Reservoir Computing Solutions For Streamflow Modeling And Prediction In Real World Scenarios, Paden Allsup
Undergraduate Honors Theses
With severe drought continuing in the western United States and the effects of climate change becoming more apparent across the world, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to predict the impact of extreme weather events like storms, droughts, and fires on streamflow dynamics. This includes flow regime as well as biogeochemical behavior of river systems and their watersheds. This project explores the use of Echo State Networks (ESN), a subset of Reservoir Computing, on modeling and predicting streamflow variability with a focus on biogeochemical patterns. In this project ESNs are tested and compared in the hope of creating …

Synaptic Development In Diverse Olfactory Neuron Classes Uses Distinct Temporal And Activity-Related Programs, Michael A. Aimino, Alison T. Depew, Lucas Restrepo, Timothy J. Mosca
Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Developing neurons must meet core molecular, cellular, and temporal requirements to ensure the correct formation of synapses, resulting in functional circuits. However, because of the vast diversity in neuronal class and function, it is unclear whether or not all neurons use the same organizational mechanisms to form synaptic connections and achieve functional and morphologic maturation. Moreover, it remains unknown whether neurons united in a common goal and comprising the same sensory circuit develop on similar timescales and use identical molecular approaches to ensure the formation of the correct number of synapses. To begin to answer these questions, we took advantage …

People with diabetic foot frequently exhibit gait and balance dysfunction. Recent advances in wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) enable to assess some of the gait and balance dysfunction associated with diabetic foot (i.e., digital biomarkers of gait and balance). However, there is no review to inform digital biomarkers of gait and balance dysfunction related to diabetic foot, measurable by wearable IMUs (e.g., what gait and balance parameters can wearable IMUs collect? Are the measurements repeatable?). Accordingly, we conducted a web-based, mini review using PubMed. Our search was limited to human subjects and English-written papers published in peer-reviewed journals. We identified …

Overqualified And Underrepresented: Gender Inequality In Pharmaceutical Patent Law, S. Sean Tu, Paul R. Gugliuzza, Amy Semet
BYU Law Review
Pharmaceutical patents represent some of the most valuable intellectual property assets in the world: they can be worth billions of dollars if courts uphold their validity and find them infringed. But, if invalidated, generic drug manufacturers can get to market earlier, generating billions of dollars of revenue for themselves and creating enormous savings for consumers. Accordingly, drug patents are the product of careful, high-cost prosecution and are associated with high-stakes, bet-the-company litigation.
But women lawyers are noticeably absent from pharmaceutical patent practice. This article reports an original empirical study finding that women comprise only one-third of the top pharmaceutical patent …

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers
Anna Magee's vision of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital has been realized in three phases. The first spanned the writing of her will until groundbreaking of the new hospital. This was followed by the early years as an entirely independent institution. The third phase began with its association with Thomas Jefferson University, and continues to this day with integration into a complete system of patient care, education, and research. Magee owes its existence to the philanthropy of Anna Magee and it continues to fortify her legacy and fulfill her vision of an institution where patients whose acute illness has passed can receive …

The Impact Of Video Conference On Orthopaedic Resident Education: A Survey, Michael Booth, Michael Niemann, Andrea Lese, John Taras
Cooper Rowan Medical Journal
Background: Covid and required social distancing has accelerated the use of video conferencing. We hypothesized that residents and faculty would be less receptive to the video lecture format and prefer traditional didactic methods.
Methods: A 16-question anonymous survey was distributed nationally to orthopaedic residents and faculty. The survey collected basic demographic information such as, level in training, gender, and age. We then asked the respondent to rate their agreement or disagreement with 8 statements on a Likert scale (1-5) about video conferencing regarding orthopedic education. Likert scale responses were evaluated using basic descriptive statistics. Respondents were divided into groups of …
How Has Grandparenthood Changed In Rural China?, Merril D. Silverstein
How Has Grandparenthood Changed In Rural China?, Merril D. Silverstein
Population Health Research Brief Series
China’s rapid modernization and development have led to changes across Chinese society, including within the family. China is experiencing declining birth rates, meaning that fewer older adults are becoming grandparents. At the same time, there has been growing demand for grandparents to serve as caregivers for their grandchildren. This data slice examines the changes in grandparenting in rural China and calls for policies that decrease caregiver burnout, stress, and associated poor health outcomes.
