A Pipeline To Generate Deep Learning Surrogates Of Genome-Scale Metabolic Models, Achilles Rasquinha
A Pipeline To Generate Deep Learning Surrogates Of Genome-Scale Metabolic Models, Achilles Rasquinha
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Genome-Scale Metabolic Models (GEMMs) are powerful reconstructions of biological systems that help metabolic engineers understand and predict growth conditions subjected to various environmental factors around the cellular metabolism of an organism in observation, purely in silico. Applications of metabolic engineering range from perturbation analysis and drug-target discovery to predicting growth rates of biotechnologically important metabolites and reaction objectives within dierent single-cell and multi-cellular organism types. GEMMs use mathematical frameworks for quantitative estimations of flux distributions within metabolic networks. The reasons behind why an organism activates, stuns, or fluctuates between alternative pathways for growth and survival, however, remain relatively unknown. GEMMs …

Aerosols play important roles in modulations of cloud properties and hydrological cycle by decreasing the size of cloud droplets with the increase of aerosols under the condition of fixed liquid water path, which is known as the first aerosol indirect effect or Twomey-effect or microphysical effect. Using high-quality aerosol data from surface observations and statistically decoupling the influence of meteorological factors, we show that highly loaded aerosols can counter this microphysical effect through the radiative effect to result both the decrease and increase of cloud droplet size depending on liquid water path in water clouds. The radiative effect due to …

When The Consumer Becomes The Product: Utilizing Products Liability Principles To Protect Consumers From Data Breaches, Mason Storm
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Current products liability law is not equipped to handle products in the age of data. The potential for harm was traditionally coupled with the product: wherever the product went, the potential for harm followed. As the product proceeded down the supply chain—from the manufacturer to the wholesaler, to the retailer, and then to the consumer—the risk of harm went with it. Data collected from consumers carries a different risk. Data products originate with a person who is often the consumer of a physical product in the traditional supply chain. That data product is then transmitted to another entity, which is …
