Competition In Signaling, Federico Vaccari
Competition In Signaling, Federico Vaccari
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
I study a multi-sender signaling game between an uninformed decision maker and two senders with common private information and conflicting interests. Senders can misreport information at a cost that is tied to the size of the misrepresentation. The main results concern the amount of information that is transmitted in equilibrium and the language used by senders to convey such information. Fully revealing and pure-strategy equilibria exist but are not plausible. I first identify sufficient conditions under which equilibria are essentially unique, robust, and always exist, and then deliver a complete characterization of these equilibria. As an application, I study the …

Social Work Masters Capstone Projects
Interprofessional collaboration is vital in the social work profession. Working with an interprofessional team consisting of various professions and backgrounds is both challenging and rewarding when done correctly. There are numerous models and theories out there for best practices for interprofessional collaboration. This paper evaluates different facets of interprofessional teamwork as a client case study rooted in the nine competencies set forth by the CSWE at the micro, mezzo, and macro level. Topics such as Michelle P. Waiver program, Model for Interdisciplinary Collaboration, ethical dilemmas and violation, how to be culturally responsive, how to handle client termination, and using self-care …

My Journey In Choosing A Major, Katherine Pierson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
College students have an important choice to make as they start their journey in academia: What should major in? When looking at the different fields of study we often look at what we enjoy as well as what we can see ourselves doing beyond our college years. As a student myself, I have been struggling with this decision of what my focus of study should be. By researching my main choices I have been able to gain a better understanding of what I personally want to study here at Utah State University.Research was conducted by viewing primary and secondary articles …

The Effect Of Fish Oil Supplementation And A Western-Type Diet On Gut Health, Marcus Hayden
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide and has increased incidence in more developed countries (Parkin et al., 2005). Diets in more developed and Westernized countries, where CRC is more prevalent, tend to be energy-dense and nutrient deficient. Discovering which food patterns inhibit inflammation matters because the duration of colitis is a risk factor for CRC. Deficiencies in an American diet led to decreased gut microbiota diversity and increased prevalence of colitis. A key component of colon health is the microbiome. Dietary bioactive compounds change the composition of the microbiome. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a promising …

Michigan COVID-19 Outbreak Reports
The Outbreak Data page was obtained from Michigan's COVID-19 data page: https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/stats/outbreak-reporting.
This report is created by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services from data self-reported by local health departments. Data is updated every week.
COVID-19 outbreaks are generally defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household. Local health departments report the number of new and ongoing outbreaks they are investigating by the setting of the outbreak. New outbreaks are those outbreaks that were first identified during the current reporting week. Ongoing outbreaks are …

The Walking Well: Effects Of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea On Athletic Performance, Annalise H. Lau, Erica Barber, Justin Gambini
Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
Hormonal balance and normal menstrual cycles are key factors in athletic performance. Unfortunately, female athletes themselves are often under the impression that a lighter weight will improve their performance. Even many healthcare providers do not emphasize or are unaware of the health consequences of prolonged irregular menstruation. The main purpose of this article is to review the health consequences hypothalamic amenorrhea has on female athletes and to provide education for healthcare providers regarding the importance of recovery. A literature search was conducted utilizing PubMed, Scopus, PLOS One and EBSCO. The following keywords were input into the search bar: hypothalamic amenorrhea, …

Listening To Music While Studying, Does It Help Or Not?, Kaleb Phillips
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Many college students listen to music. Many say that it helps them focus on their schoolwork and helps them retain knowledge. When I started this research, I wanted to find ways for me to help focus on my schoolwork. I get distracted easily and find joy when I listen to some kinds of music. Does music help you focus? Does it depend on the type of music, or can it be any type? Does it work for everyone? Research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. For this study, I also performed my …

Perceived Factors Contributing To The Subjective Wellbeing Of Undergraduate Engineering Students: An Exploratory Study, Muhammad Asghar, Angela Minichiello, Assad Iqbal
Engineering Education Student Research
Engineering education is perceived to be a tough field of study with detrimental effects on the mental health of undergraduate engineering students. High levels of anxiety and depression are reported among this population. Overall, mental health research is often biased toward looking at mental health from a deficit perspective and investigating mental health as a negative phenomenon. This trend also persists in engineering education research. The purpose of this exploratory study, therefore, is to investigate the condition of subjective wellbeing (SWB) of undergraduate engineering students to understand the factors that they perceive as positively contributing to their overall wellbeing in …
Closing The Concern-Action Gap Through Relational Climate Conversations: Insights From Us Climate Activists, Julia Coombs Fine
Closing The Concern-Action Gap Through Relational Climate Conversations: Insights From Us Climate Activists, Julia Coombs Fine
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Several studies have found that relational climate conversations can be an effective method of increasing conversational participants’ concern about the climate crisis and encouraging them to take collective action. However, little work has yet examined how such conversations are practiced by climate activists, a group with expertise in relational organizing. Drawing on surveys and semi-structured interviews with climate activists across the USA, this analysis finds that activists frequently have climate conversations with friends and family, most of whom are politically progressive and somewhat to very concerned about the climate crisis. These findings might seem to suggest that climate activists only …

You Need This: Global Fast Fashion, Environment, And Consumption Culture, Alexandra Lamm
Student Work
In looking at how global production of clothing has increased and shifted, we see the impacts in places like workers rights, environmental issues and cultural consumption. Although vastly different, through examination we will see how all are intrinsically linked. We have reached a truly global economy, and even when threatened with negative consequences of mass consumption in our daily lives, the road to actual change in the fashion industry becomes harder in time due to our dependency on the industry as a whole.

INTRODUCTION: Black communities claim the highest number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 in Canada. Generating culturally/contextually appropriate public health measures and strategies for vaccine uptake in black communities within Canada can better support the disproportionate impact of this pandemic. This study explores the barriers and enablers to public health measures limited to mask-wearing, disinfection, sanitation, social distancing and handwashing, as well as the barriers and attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccines among the black community.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will use qualitative approaches informed by the widely accepted Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to aid our investigation. We will …

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise across disciplines, out-of-sample generalizability is concerning. This is currently addressed by sharing multi-site data, but such centralization is challenging/infeasible to scale due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative paradigm for accurate and generalizable ML, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 sites across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, reporting the largest such dataset in the literature (n = 6, 314). We demonstrate a 33% delineation improvement for the surgically …

Theses and Dissertations
With the recent upsurge in mental health concerns and ongoing isolation regulations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to understand how an individual's daily travel behavior can affect their mental health. Before finding any correlations to mental health, researchers must first have individual travel behavior information: an accurate number of activities and locations of those activities. One way to obtain daily travel behavior information is through the interpretation of cellular Global Positioning System (GPS) data. Previous methods that interpret GPS data into travel behavior information have limitations. Specifically, rule-based algorithms are structured around subjective rule-based tests, clustering …

Depression Provides Additional Obstacles/Barriers For College Students To Maintain A Healthy Mindset, Jake Cardon
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
This study reflects the answers that I have found to the question "How does depression affect the ability of college students to have and maintain a good mindset?" Research was conducted using library and internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. Academic articles and extensive studies were reviewed and analyzed to better understand what mindset is, what depression is, what challenges college students face, and ultimately the barriers that students with depressive disorders face as they try to maintain a healthy mindset while attending college. Over the course of my research and studies I have gained a deeper …

My research question was how does growing up in white spaces affect my thoughts about my Hispanic/Latinx community? This project aims to highlight and bring forward just some of the effects white America has on people in minority groups. My research was conducted using internet resources to locate both primary and secondary research. I also used my personal experience as a resource and interviewed some of my close family members and friends in the same community. I will argue that predominantly white America has affected my thoughts on my community of Hispanics/Latinx. Many people of all different races and ethnicities …

Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats)-Cas (CRISPR-associated) adaptive immune systems defend bacteria and archaea against phages, plasmids, and other mobile genetic elements. Each Type IV CRISPR system contains a subtype-specific gene and is hypothesized to be essential for function. The Type IV-A system encodes ATP-dependent 5'-3' DNA helicase called CasDinG, while the Type IV-B systems encode a putative pyrophosphatase named CasCysH. Here we investigate the function of the type IV CRISPR systems by expressing, purifying, and characterizing the accessory proteins from the type IV systems. This project is a first step towards understanding the structure and mechanism of type …

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Its Lasting Effects, Tessa Conrad
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
According to the CDC, one in every six boys and one in every four girls are sexually assaulted before they are eighteen. While most everyone agrees that childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is extremely harmful and can really disrupt a child's development, what they don't realize is how long the effects can last. For many survivors, they struggle with the effects for most of their lives. Just as there is a wide range for what actions are sexual abuse, there is even wider range for the effects and challenges that are left behind after the incident. These challenges include mental, emotional, …

Childhood Food Insecurity In Rural America: Raising Awareness And Inspiring Action Through Art And Design, Julie Hansen Olson
Childhood Food Insecurity In Rural America: Raising Awareness And Inspiring Action Through Art And Design, Julie Hansen Olson
Masters Theses
Children go hungry in America every day, particularly in rural communities, where statistics show food insecurity to be as high as 17%. This means one in six children in rural communities lacks nutritionally adequate food or the ability to acquire it on a daily basis.
