Voicing Derbarl Yerrigan As A Feminist Anti-Colonial Methodology, Vanessa Wintoneak, Mindy Blaise Jan 2022

Voicing Derbarl Yerrigan As A Feminist Anti-Colonial Methodology, Vanessa Wintoneak, Mindy Blaise

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The paper voices Derbarl Yerrigan, a significant river in Western Australia, through three imperfect, non-innocent, and necessary river-child stories. These stories highlight the emergence of a feminist anti-colonial methodology that is attentive to settler response-abilities to Derbarl Yerrigan through situated, relational, active, and generative research methods. Voicing Derbarl Yerrigan influences the methodological practices used as part of an ongoing river-child walking inquiry that is concerned with generating climate change pedagogies in response to the global climate crises and calls for new ways of thinking and producing knowledge. In particular, the authors found that voicing as a methodology includes listening and …

How To Phrase Critical Realist Interview Questions In Applied Social Science Research, Andreas Brönnimann Jan 2022

How To Phrase Critical Realist Interview Questions In Applied Social Science Research, Andreas Brönnimann

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The tenets of critical and social realism are well supported in the literature. However, researchers following a realist paradigm have concerns about the lack of methodical guidance for qualitative interviewing, despite their affirmation about the importance of in-depth interviews. A conducted review of empirical realist literature provides evidence of an absence of guidance and commonality regarding interview planning practices. To overcome this absence, this paper composes a guiding framework to assist researchers to phrase more appropriate interview questions in realist research. The steps are founded on critical and social realist concepts while guided by methodological realist principles. Its contribution aims …

The prevalence of self-prescribed complementary medicine (CM) use is an area of concern across the Middle East. We conducted a descriptive qualitative study to describe women’s use of CM during their childbearing years in Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The study conducted using face to face audio-recorded interviews with 70 participants. Our findings showed that women used several herbal plants to ease pain and discomfort during menstruation and/or during pregnancy and in postpartum care. Acupuncture, meditation, and massage were less likely to be used by women. The impact of CM was often described in relation to perceived usefulness and …

Art. 8.9 Ceta Investment And Regulatory Measures, Stefanie Schacherer Jan 2022

Art. 8.9 Ceta Investment And Regulatory Measures, Stefanie Schacherer

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Article 8.9 CETA on “Investment and Regulatory Measures” is at the centre of continuous and vigorous debate on how to ensure a proper balance between private business interests and the prerogative of States to regulate public welfare issue. The concerns expressed in the debate on the right to regulate are well-known. International investment agreements (IIAs) came under criticism due to their substantive protection standards, whose language is perceived as lacking in precision; as a consequence, they deliver too little policy flexibility. The protection standards together with the investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) system, moreover, afford high levels of discretion to the …

These came mainly in the form of the enactment of the current Criminal Procedure Code, as well as the landmark cases of Muhammad bin Kadar v Public Prosecutor [2011] 3 SLR 1205 and Muhammad Nabill bin Mohd Fuad v Public Prosecutor [2020] 1 SLR 984. This article surveys all relevant developments since the enactment of the Criminal Procedure Code and considers some of the issues that may lie ahead, such as whether unused statements of the accused should be disclosed, whether statements …

Re-Formulating The Test For Ascertaining The Proper Law Of An Arbitration Agreement: A Comparative Common Law Analysis, Darius Chan, Jim Yang Teo Jan 2022

Re-Formulating The Test For Ascertaining The Proper Law Of An Arbitration Agreement: A Comparative Common Law Analysis, Darius Chan, Jim Yang Teo

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Following two recent decisions from the apex courts in England and Singapore on the appropriate methodology to ascertain the proper law of an arbitration agreement, the positions in these two leading arbitration destinations have now converged in some respects. But other issues of conceptual and practical significance have not been fully addressed, including the extent to which the true nature of the inquiry into whether the parties had made a choice of law is in substance an exercise in contractual interpretation, the applicability of a validation principle, and the extent to which the choice of a neutral seat may affect …

The Problems With Trade Secret Protection/Overprotection In Asia, Kung-Chung Liu Jan 2022

The Problems With Trade Secret Protection/Overprotection In Asia, Kung-Chung Liu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Trade secret protection law has been an important complement to patent law and has gained increasing importance over the last three decades, not least in Asia. Major Asian countries are now at a crossroads, as some (Japan, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and China) are following the US approach to criminalizing trade secret infringement and imposing harsher penalties on economic espionage (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China). This paper identifies many of the problems associated with trade secret protection, provides indicators of the overprotection of trade secrets, and warns against its many side effects. It then points out the crossroads that Asian economies …

The Inclusion Of Anti-Corruption Clauses In International Investment Agreements And Its Possible Systemic Implications, Yueming Yan Jan 2022

The Inclusion Of Anti-Corruption Clauses In International Investment Agreements And Its Possible Systemic Implications, Yueming Yan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Empirical studies have demonstrated a recent trend of incorporating anti-corruption provisions into international investment and trade agreements. Some treaties, i.e. the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, include both substantive and procedural obligations such as establishing corruption as criminal offenses, promoting integrity among public officials, and raising public awareness of the threat of corruption. Others like Japan prefer to insert rather general and abstract provisions in its bilateral investment treaties, stating that they agree to take efforts to prevent and combat corruption without indicating specific measures. This article attempts to take a closer look at these anti-corruption provisions by …

The Role Of Data For Ai Startup Growth, James Bessen, Stephen Michael Impink, Lydia Reichensperger, Robert Seamans

Faculty Scholarship

Artificial intelligence (“AI”)-enabled products are expected to drive economic growth. Training data are important for firms developing AI-enabled products; without training data, firms cannot develop or refine their algorithms. This is particularly the case for AI startups developing new algorithms and products. However, there is no consensus in the literature on which aspects of training data are most important. Using unique survey data of AI startups, we find that startups with access to proprietary training data are more likely to acquire venture capital funding.

A Philosophy Of Contract Law For Artificial Intelligence: Shared Intentionality, John Linarelli Jan 2022

A Philosophy Of Contract Law For Artificial Intelligence: Shared Intentionality, John Linarelli

Scholarly Works

This is a chapter for the forthcoming book, Contracting and Contract Law in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, edited by Martin Ebers, Cristina Poncibò, and Mimi Zou, to be published by Hart Publishing. The aim of this chapter is to offer a general theory of contract law to account for the inclusion of artificial intelligence in contract practices. Artificial intelligence brings out that what makes contract law a distinctive form of legal obligation is shared intentionality. I refer to this insight as the shared intentionality thesis. Shared intentionality is the psychological capacity of one agent to share and pursue a …

A Blockchain-Based Retribution Mechanism For Collaborative Intrusion Detection, Wenjun Fan, Shubham Kumar, Sang Yoon Chang, Younghee Park Jan 2022

A Blockchain-Based Retribution Mechanism For Collaborative Intrusion Detection, Wenjun Fan, Shubham Kumar, Sang Yoon Chang, Younghee Park

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Collaborative intrusion detection approach uses the shared detection signature between the collaborative participants to facilitate coordinated defense. In the context of collaborative intrusion detection system (CIDS), however, there is no research focusing on the efficiency of the shared detection signature. The inefficient detection signature costs not only the IDS resource but also the process of the peer-to-peer (P2P) network. In this paper, we therefore propose a blockchain-based retribution mechanism, which aims to incentivize the participants to contribute to verifying the efficiency of the detection signature in terms of certain distributed consensus. We implement a prototype using Ethereum blockchain, which instantiates …

Leveraging Initial Cognitive Load To Predict User Response To Complex Visual Tasks, Reem Albaghli, Yaman Jandali, Sarah Almahmid, Nada Attar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this study, we were able to show how cognitive load measurement during the initiation of a complex visual task can predict user response. We measured cognitive load using pupil size and microsaccade rate. The initial phase of task was defined as the first 25 percent of the trial Reaction Time (RT), which was variable up to 50 seconds. The complex visual task entailed a set of twelve words that could be grouped based into 1, 2, or 3 categories or sets, e.g., the words bed, pillow, headboard, etc. can be grouped into a single set that is bedroom. We …

On The Possibility Оf A Dual-Natured Self, Anand Jayprakash Vaidya Jan 2022

On The Possibility Оf A Dual-Natured Self, Anand Jayprakash Vaidya

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this paper I examine compatibilism and incompatibilism about whether the self can be both a subject and an object in the same awareness at the same time. While this is an old debate that many traditions of philosophy have contributed to, my point of departure is the work of A.C. Mukerji (an Indian philosopher of the modern era) who worked on the possibility of self-awareness by articulating, what he called, the paradox of ego-centricity. I also consider Patañjali (an Indian philosopher of the classical era), Maurice Merleau-Ponty (a phenomenologist), and Arindam Chakrabarti (a contemporary Indian and Analytic philosopher) on …

Reports of escalated discrimination among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) due to COVID-19 are alarming, making this a public health priority. However, there are limited empirical studies on the scope and impact of COVID-19-related discrimination among AAPIs. Using the COVID-19 Effects on the Mental and Physical Health of AAPI Survey Study (COMPASS) data (N = 4971; survey period: October 2020–February 2021), which is a U.S.-wide multi-lingual survey, we examined the prevalence of, and factors associated with discrimination experiences attributable to being an AAPI during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, 60.7% reported experiencing discrimination; the group prevalence ranged from 80.0% (Hmong) …

Spanish-Speaking Caregivers’ Use Of Referential Labels With Toddlers Is A Better Predictor Of Later Vocabulary Than Their Use Of Referential Gestures, Janet Y. Bang, Manuel Bohn, Joel Ramírez, Virginia A. Marchman, Anne Fernald Jan 2022

Marchman, Anne Fernald

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Variation in how frequently caregivers engage with their children is associated with variation in children's later language outcomes. One explanation for this link is that caregivers use both verbal behaviors, such as labels, and non-verbal behaviors, such as gestures, to help children establish reference to objects or events in the world. However, few studies have directly explored whether language outcomes are more strongly associated with referential behaviors that are expressed verbally, such as labels, or non-verbally, such as gestures, or whether both are equally predictive. Here, we observed caregivers from 42 Spanish-speaking families in the US engage with their 18-month-old …

Performance prediction in wireless mobile networks is essential for diverse purposes in network management and operation. Particularly, the position of mobile devices is crucial to estimating the performance in the mobile communication setting. With its importance, this paper investigates mobile communication performance based on the coordinate information of mobile devices. We analyze a recent 5G data collection and examine the feasibility of location-based performance prediction. As location information is key to performance prediction, the basic assumption of making a relevant prediction is the correctness of the coordinate information of devices given. With its criticality, this paper also investigates the impact …

Word Embeddings For Fake Malware Generation, Quang Duy Tran, Fabio Di Troia Jan 2022

Word Embeddings For Fake Malware Generation, Quang Duy Tran, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Signature and anomaly-based techniques are the fundamental methods to detect malware. However, in recent years this type of threat has advanced to become more complex and sophisticated, making these techniques less effective. For this reason, researchers have resorted to state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to combat the threat of information security. Nevertheless, despite the integration of the machine learning models, there is still a shortage of data in training that prevents these models from performing at their peak. In the past, generative models have been found to be highly effective at generating image-like data that are similar to the actual data …

Robustness Of Image-Based Malware Analysis, Katrina Tran, Fabio Di Troia, Mark Stamp Jan 2022

Robustness Of Image-Based Malware Analysis, Katrina Tran, Fabio Di Troia, Mark Stamp

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In previous work, “gist descriptor” features extracted from images have been used in malware classification problems and have shown promising results. In this research, we determine whether gist descriptors are robust with respect to malware obfuscation techniques, as compared to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) trained directly on malware images. Using the Python Image Library (PIL), we create images from malware executables and from malware that we obfuscate. We conduct experiments to compare classifying these images with a CNN as opposed to extracting the gist descriptor features from these images to use in classification. For the gist descriptors, we consider a …

A Blockchain-Based Tamper-Resistant Logging Framework, Thomas H. Austin, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Since its introduction in Bitcoin, the blockchain has proven to be a versatile data structure. In its role as an immutable ledger, it has grown beyond its initial use in financial transactions to be used in recording a wide variety of other useful information. In this paper, we explore the application of the blockchain outside of its traditional decentralized, financial domain. We show how, even with only a single “mining” node, a proof-of-work blockchain can be the cornerstone of a tamper resistant logging framework. By attaching a proof-of-work to blocks of logging messages, we make it increasingly difficult for an …

"For Better Or Worse": Imagining Innovation In Smart City Municipal Design, Kevin M. Kochever Jan 2022

"For Better Or Worse": Imagining Innovation In Smart City Municipal Design, Kevin M. Kochever

Master's Theses

The smart city concept recently (ca. 2010) emerged as a corporate-led system-as-a-service (SaaS) tool to meet city needs of accessibility and efficiency. I looked at three Western cities—Reykjavík, San José, and Toronto—to discover what it meant for city managers to meet municipal needs by embracing smart initiatives. Senior-level city managers, consultants, and technologists invoked vocabularies of smartness and innovation, adopting Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) as tools to facilitate human resource and service efficiency needs. I found persistent ambiguity in how city managers described and measured outcomes for city smartness. I also found stakeholders used smartness to …
