Quark And Gluon Entanglement In The Proton On The Light Cone At Intermediate X, Adrian Dumitru, Eric Kolbusz
Quark And Gluon Entanglement In The Proton On The Light Cone At Intermediate X, Adrian Dumitru, Eric Kolbusz
Publications and Research
In QCD with $N_c$ colors the antisymmetric valence quark color space singlet state $\sim \epsilon_{i_1\cdots i_{N_c}} |i_1,\cdots, i_{N_c}\rangle$ of the proton corresponds to the reduced density matrix $\rho_{ij}=(1/N_c) \delta_{ij}$ for a single color degree of freedom. Its degenerate spectrum of eigenvalues, $\lambda_i=1/N_c$, the purity $\tr \rho^2 = 1/N_c$, and the von Neumann entropy $S_\mathrm{vN}=\log(N_c)$ all indicate maximal entanglement of color. On the other hand, for $N_c\to\infty$ the spatial wave function of the proton factorizes into valence quark wave functions determined by a mean field [E. Witten, Nucl. Phys. B160, 57 (1979)] where there is no entanglement of spatial degrees of …

We present the first fully analytic evaluation of the transition amplitude for the scattering of a massless into a massive pair of fermions at the two-loop level in quantum electrodynamics. Our result is an essential ingredient for the determination of the electromagnetic coupling within scattering reactions, beyond the currently known accuracy, which has a crucial impact on the evaluation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. It will allow, in particular, for a precise determination of the leading hadronic contribution to the (g − 2)μ in the MUonE experiment at CERN, and therefore can be used to …

A Template Method To Measure The $T \Bar T$ Polarisation, J. A. Aguilar-Saavedra, M. C. N. Fiolhais, P. Martín-Ramiro, J. M. Moreno, António Onofre
Publications and Research
We develop a template method for the measurement of the polarisation of $t \bar t$ pairs produced in hadron collisions. The method would allow to extract the individual fractions of $t_L \bar t_L$, $t_R \bar t_R$, $t_L \bar t_R$ and $t_R \bar t_L$ pairs with a fit to data, where L, R refer to the polarisation along any axis. These polarisation fractions have not been independently measured at present. Secondarily, the method also provides the net polarisation of t and $\bar t$, as well as their spin correlation for arbitrary axes.

Factors Associated With Mask Use In New York City Neighborhood Parks During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Field Audit Study, Lisa Hitch, Marie A. Sillice, Hanish Kodali, Katarzyna E. Wyka, Javier Otero Peña, Terry Tk Huang
Publications and Research
Background: Mask use is a cost-effective measure to decrease COVID-19 transmission. Mask mandates intend to increase mask compliance but are often ambiguous when it comes to public outdoor spaces.
Methods: We used a field audit study to examine mask use in New York City neighborhood parks during COVID-19. 1453 park visitors were observed in 13 parks during July–August 2020 using a modified and validated park use audit tool (System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities) that included items on general and proper mask use (i.e., mask covering both nose and mouth). Generalized estimating equation regression was used to determine …

Publications and Research
Ground-level ozone has a well established climate penalty associated with changing meteorological conditions under future climate change, but most existing research focuses exclusively on ozone-temperature relationships defined at specific locations. Using an extreme-value theory approach, we model relationships between temperature, humidity, and vapor pressure deficit and maximum daily 8 h ozone concentrations (MDA8) across California using a combination of ozone station network data and Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) model output from 2008 to 2017. We use a spatial regression with time varying bias coefficients to fuse station observations and modeled output into a spatially explicit gridded ozone …
Older Adults And Suicide As Examined Through The Lens Of Joiner's Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide, Pamela Holmes
Older Adults And Suicide As Examined Through The Lens Of Joiner's Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide, Pamela Holmes
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Older adults face the highest rates of suicide of all age groups. The older adult population is not a homogenous group, and each age range—young old, middle old, and oldest old—has specific risk factors. Although Joiner’s interpersonal theory of suicide (IPTS) has been deemed valid among these age groups, it has not been specifically researched in older adults in each older age range. Due to lack of research and low reporting rates, not enough is known to develop specific detection and prevention measures targeting this population. This paper addresses the application of Joiner’s IPTS to both genders in each of …

Exchange Rate Forecast Model: Factor Analysis, Swapnil Landge
Publications and Research
Forecasting the exchange rate using factor analysis, factors based on cross section exchange rates of different economies in terms of trade, would beat random walk model in longer out of sample horizon forecasting. In this research project, we will replicate the NBER working paper Factor Model Forecasts of Exchange Rates” by Charles Engel, Nelson C. Mark & Kenneth D. West (2012) which has used 17 OECD countries exchange rates in getting the potential factors but with extended time period from 1973:1-2021:4. We will report early sample forecasting statistics for a 1987-1998 sample. Results for late samples (1999-2022) were promising, at …
Farmers' Preference To Precision Agriculture Data Management: A Discrete Choice Experiment, Abiodun Idowu
Farmers' Preference To Precision Agriculture Data Management: A Discrete Choice Experiment, Abiodun Idowu
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
There is no legal or regulatory framework that protects a farmer’s right to control the data generated from their use of precision agriculture. This may impede the adoption of new precision agricultural technologies. Using a choice experiment, we show that factors contributing to willingness to enroll in a data management contract include the discount received from a service provider, whether data ownership rights are retained, data privacy guarantees, and whether the data is transferred manually or automatically between systems.

Changes To California Alfalfa Production And Perceptions During The 2011-2017 Drought, Alida A. Cantor, Bethani Turley, Charles Cody Ross, Mathern Glass
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
California experienced a severe multiyear drought stretching from 2011 through 2017, significantly reducing surface water supply for ecosystems, agriculture, and humans and prompting coordinated conservation efforts. Given that agriculture is the largest consumptive use of water in the state, one anticipated response to a severe drought would be to decrease production of low-value, high-water-use crops such as alfalfa. In this article we use a multimethod approach to examine both spatial distribution and public perceptions of alfalfa production in California over the course of the 2011 through 2017 drought. We find that although California alfalfa production did decline at the state …
Natural Disasters, Institutions, And Economic Recovery: Effects Of Hurricane Katrina, Corbin Carl Thomas Clark
Natural Disasters, Institutions, And Economic Recovery: Effects Of Hurricane Katrina, Corbin Carl Thomas Clark
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
This study analyzes the effects of Hurricane Katrina on formal and informal institutions in Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi to provide insights into the recovery trajectories of the states. I use the synthetic control method to construct counterfactual states. I find that the hurricane had large and lingering effects on population and per capita income in all three states, with differing impacts on formal and informal institutions. In Louisiana, the hurricane led to increases in labor market freedom, minimum wage freedom (i.e. deregulation), and property tax freedom (i.e. tax reduction), along with permanent increases in government spending and the government employment. …

A Meta-Analysis Of Studies Addressing The Impact Of Gbh On Human, Animal Health And The Environment, Kodjo Barnor
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
The herbicide glyphosate has been tested and approved by both the FDA and the USDA, as evidenced by many published research papers, i.e., they are deemed safe for humans, animals, and the environment. However, evidence is mounting that glyphosate interferes with many metabolic processes in plants and animals, and glyphosate residues have been detected in both. The factors that influence the outcomes of previous scientific research on the potential adverse effects of GBH on human and animal health and the environment were investigated. Using DAGs and Granger causality tests, the study found that while private and public organizations were more …

Detecting The Presence Of Electronic Devices In Smart Homes Using Harmonic Radar, Beatrice Perez, Gregory Mazzaro, Timothy J. Pierson, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Data about users is collected constantly by phones, cameras, Internet websites, and others. The advent of so-called ‘Smart Things' now enable ever-more sensitive data to be collected inside that most private of spaces: the home. The first step in helping users regain control of their information (inside their home) is to alert them to the presence of potentially unwanted electronics. In this paper, we present a system that could help homeowners (or home dwellers) find electronic devices in their living space. Specifically, we demonstrate the use of harmonic radars (sometimes called nonlinear junction detectors), which have also been used in …

Are Infrared Thermography, Automated Feeding Systems, And Heart Rate Variability Measures Capable Of Characterizing Group-Housed Sow Social Hierarchies?, Dominique Sommer
Animal Sciences
Group gestation housing is becoming standard practice in commercial swine production. Although group housing promotes behavioral variability within the breeding herd, it can cause several management challenges for producers due to the establishment of the social hierarchy. Poor performance and welfare in group housed breeding stock can be attributed to the repercussions of aggression performed between dyads. The ability to quickly identify sows in the social hierarchy could be beneficial to producers for enforcing preventative actions. Precision livestock farming tools have proven to aid animal caretakers in monitoring animal health and welfare in livestock industries. The objective of this thesis was …

Design And Development Of An Automatic Steering System For Agricultural Towed Implements, Nadia Delavarpour
Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering
While an auto steered tractor can improve the overall accuracy and efficiency of an operation, for operations that involve towing an implement, a significant portion of the efficiency reduction comes from uncontrolled motions of the towed implement. Therefore, there is a crucial need to study auto steering system for towed implement as well. In this study different requirements of an auto steering system for a towed implement were developed and studied. In this study the guiding performance of two local positioning sensors (Tactile and Ultrasonic sensors) under similar conditions were studied for reading different trajectories at different traveling speed. Furthermore, …
Using Uas Imagery And Computer Vision To Support Site-Specific Weed Control In Corn, Ranjan Sapkota
Using Uas Imagery And Computer Vision To Support Site-Specific Weed Control In Corn, Ranjan Sapkota
Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering
Currently, a blanket application of herbicides across the field without considering the spatial distribution of weeds is the most used method to control weeds in corn. Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) can provide high spatial resolution imagery, which can be used to map weeds across a field with a high spatial and temporal resolution during early growing season to support site-specific weed control (SSWC). The proposed approach assumes that plants growing outside the corn rows are weeds that need to be controlled. For that, we are proposing the use of “Pixel Intensity Projection” (PIP) algorithm for the detection of corn rows …
Understanding Consumer Acceptance Of Multiple Red Meat Products And Perceptions Of The American Meat Science Association’S Intercollegiate Meat Judging Program Benefits From Participants, Michaella Fevold
Animal Sciences
Per capita consumption of red meat products totaled 67 kg in 2017. Given the popularity of meat, it is important for meat scientists to monitor consumers acceptance of red meat products. Consumer acceptance of red meat products is driven by meat quality characteristics such as tenderness. The objectives of the second and third chapter was to investigate the influence of beef ribeye steak weight and thickness on purchasing behaviors of consumers and to better understand the effects of frozen storage on protein degradation, lipid oxidation, meat quality, and sensory characteristics of lamb. As beef carcasses have grown over the time …

Accuracy Of A Sacral Drilling With A Custom 3d Printed Drilling Guide Or Free-Hand Technique In Canine Experimental Sacroiliac Luxation, Daniel Mccarthy
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to improve the accuracy of drilling during the repair of sacroiliac luxation with a 3D-printed patient-specific drill guide (3D-GDT) compared to free-hand drilling technique (FHDT). A blinded, randomized, prospective study was performed including sixteen canine cadavers (20-25 kg) euthanized for reasons not related to the study. Dorsal, bilateral, sacroiliac luxations (SILs) were created experimentally. A pelvic CT was performed pre- and post-drilling. The FHDT was drilled followed by 3D-GDT for each sacrum. CT and 3D measurements of craniocaudal and dorsoventral angles were compared between FHDT and 3D-GDT, as well as deviations of entry …
Can Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Be A Viable Treatment Option For Law Enforcement Officers With Ptsd?, Megan Rinderer
Can Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Be A Viable Treatment Option For Law Enforcement Officers With Ptsd?, Megan Rinderer
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Law enforcement officers (LEO) are more likely to experience symptoms of PTSD when compared to the general population yet are less likely to seek mental health treatment (Jetelina et al., 2020). Given that LEO face unique occupational stressors and repeated exposure to traumatic events, treatment for PTSD among law enforcement populations poses unique challenges for clinicians. The combination of these variables precludes officers from seeking and receiving mental health services. Research regarding the efficacy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) as a psychotherapeutic intervention is limited. To date, no studies have examined the use of BJJ to mitigate symptoms of PTSD …
Tax Now Or Tax Never: Political Optionality And The Case For Current-Assessment Tax Reform, David Gamage, John R. Brooks
Tax Now Or Tax Never: Political Optionality And The Case For Current-Assessment Tax Reform, David Gamage, John R. Brooks
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The U.S. income tax system is broken. Due to the realization doctrine and taxpayers’ consequent ability to defer taxation of gains, taxpayers can easily minimize or avoid the taxation of investment income, a failure that is magnified many times over when considering the ultra-wealthy. As a result, this small group of taxpayers commands an enormous share of national wealth yet pays paltry taxes relative to the economic income their wealth produces—a predicament that this Article condemns as being economically, politically, and socially harmful.
The conventional view among tax law experts has assumed that the problems created by the realization doctrine …

The Adolescent Behavioral Index: Identifying Students At Risk For Disengagement In High School, Graham G. Rifenbark, Allison Lombardi, Jennifer Freeman, Mary Morningstar
Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this study, we examined the relationship between self-reported adolescent perceptions of school climate and extant high school academic and behavioral data; specifically grade point average, attendance, tardies, and office discipline referrals, using a Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model on a sample of high school students (n = 5039) with and without disabilities. Findings show evidence of a robust Adolescent Behavioral Index when controlled for disability status as those with disabilities are expected to have lower index scores. Implications for research and practice are focused on the Adolescent Behavioral Index as a mechanism for systematic data collection that may …

A Comparative Study Of Online Art History Information Literacy Instruction: A Tale Of Two Platforms, Elsa Loftis
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
In a collaborative effort between three departments at Portland State University, investigators designed and created Information Literacy (IL) modules tailored to the needs of Art History students utilizing two delivery platforms. One platform employed adaptive software (in this study, the product is called Realizeit), and the other was a static environment called Pressbooks. Students were randomly divided into cohorts based on these delivery methods. The author compared results of pre and post information literacy assessments and completed an analysis of students’ preliminary bibliographies to measure the success of the IL instruction. But the core investigation was to determine whether the …
Standing For Rivers, Mountains - And Trees - In The Anthropocene, David Takacs
Standing For Rivers, Mountains - And Trees - In The Anthropocene, David Takacs
Faculty Scholarship
In his well-known article, Should Trees Have Standing?—Toward Legal Rights for Natural Objects, Professor Christopher Stone proposed that courts grant nonhuman entities standing as plaintiffs so their interests may directly represented in court. In this Article, I review Stone’s ideas about standing and our relationship with the natural environment and describe the current, burgeoning, widespread trend toward granting not just standing, but legal rights and legal personhood to rivers, mountains, and other natural entities. I analyze the ways in which courts and legislatures in New Zealand, Australia, Colombia, and elsewhere are addressing concerns similar to Stone’s with expansive, even radical …

California’s legislature has passed several laws that intervene in local land-use regulation in order to increase desperately needed housing production—particularly affordable housing production. Some of these new laws expand local reporting requirements concerning zoning and planning laws, and the application of those laws apply to proposed housing development. This emphasis on measurement requires the state to develop a housing data strategy to support both enforcement of existing law and effective policymaking in the future. Our Comprehensive Assessment of Land Use Entitlements Study (CALES) predates, but aligns with and supports, this state-led effort to improve local reporting. For the cities that …
Punitive Surveillance, Kate Weisburd
Punitive Surveillance, Kate Weisburd

Budget constraints, bipartisan desire to address mass incarceration, and the COVID-19 crisis in prisons have triggered state and federal officials to seek alternatives to incarceration. As a result, invasive electronic surveillance—such as GPS-equipped ankle monitors, smartphone tracking, and suspicionless searches of electronic devices—is often touted as a humane substitute for incarceration. This type of monitoring, which I term “punitive surveillance,” allows government officials, law enforcement, and for-profit companies to track, record, search, and analyze the location, biometric data, and other meta-data of thousands of people on probation and parole. With virtually no legal oversight or restraint, punitive surveillance deprives people …

Carli Creek Regional Water Quality Project: Assessing Water Quality Improvement At An Urban Stormwater Constructed Wetland, Christopher L. Desiderati
Carli Creek Regional Water Quality Project: Assessing Water Quality Improvement At An Urban Stormwater Constructed Wetland, Christopher L. Desiderati
Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports
Stormwater management is an ongoing challenge in the United States and the world at-large. As state and municipal agencies grapple with conflicting interests like encouraging land development, complying with permits to control stormwater discharges, “urban stream syndrome” effects, and charges to steward natural resources for the long-term, some agencies may turn to constructed wetlands (CWs) as aesthetically pleasing and functional natural analogs for attenuating pollution delivered by stormwater runoff to rivers and streams. Constructed wetlands retain pollutants via common physical, physicochemical, and biological principles such as settling, adsorption, or plant and algae uptake. The efficacy of constructed wetlands for pollutant …

Incentivizing Distributed Energy Resource Participation In Grid Services, Tylor Slay, John M. Acken, Robert B. Bass
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The bulk power system is experiencing a dramatic shift as renewable generation growth continues to accelerate. Large-scale renewables adoption will help societies transition to a low-carbon, low-cost, and environmental-friendly electrical power system. However, the transition from a paradigm of generation following load to one where load follows generation will require large-scale interconnection and coordinated operation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), supported by open communication protocols. In this future grid scenario, DER aggregations will provide critical grid services that enable high penetration levels of renewable generation. This position paper presents an Energy Service Interface (ESI) that defines scope for ensuring secure, …
