Characterizing The Relationship Of Lgl1 And Akt In Migration Of Murine Neural Stem And Progenitor Cells, Natalie Pedicino
Characterizing The Relationship Of Lgl1 And Akt In Migration Of Murine Neural Stem And Progenitor Cells, Natalie Pedicino
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Asymmetric cell division and migration are critical for neural stem cell differentiation and brain development. When these processes are dysregulated in neural progenitor cells (NPCs), developmental defects and diseases like glioma can result. Lgl1 is a tumor suppressor gene that was first characterized in Drosophila neuroblasts (Strand et al., 1994). It is best known for its regulation of asymmetric cell division through its association with the Par complex. The PI3K/AKT signaling cascade is involved in cellular migration and is also regulated by Par signaling. Unpublished data from the Sprowles laboratory suggests a potential role of Lgl1 in migration and other …
Carnivore And Ungulate Responses To Cattle In A Grazed Forest Ecosystem, Rebecca Carniello
Carnivore And Ungulate Responses To Cattle In A Grazed Forest Ecosystem, Rebecca Carniello
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Habitat disturbance, a leading threat to biological diversity, comes in many forms and can alter the behavior of wildlife and reduce the amount of suitable habitat. Livestock grazing, a form of habitat disturbance, is the most widespread influence on native ecosystems of western North America. Research on the impacts of introduced domestic herbivores on wild carnivores and ungulates varies, and the degree to which wildlife species are affected is often species-specific. I used remote trail cameras to compare the activity patterns of black bears (Ursus americanus), coyotes (Canis latrans), bobcats (Lynx rufus), mountain lions …

Market Surveillance To Support Quality Assurance And Consumer Protection For The Solar Payg Products Market In East And West Africa, Hamidah Naishur Nakimuli
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Off-grid Pay As You Go (PAYG) solar products have become one of the fastest-growing approaches to providing basic electricity services to off-grid households not only in Sub-Saharan Africa but also in many other parts of the world with limited or no access to the grid connection. However, sustainably growing the PAYG solar industry requires paying close attention to product quality from the point of manufacturing to the end user. This research examines how to best design market surveillance programs that ensure quality in off-grid PAYG solar products and strengthen the implementation and enforcement of quality standards in the off-grid solar …
Degradation And Nitrogen Cycling In The Context Of Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function Relationships In The Inquiline Bacterial Community Of Darlingtonia Californica, Megan Teigen
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Biodiversity-ecosystem function (BEF) research aims to explain how species and their environments interact with each other. Microbial communities engage in vital biogeochemical pathways in a variety of natural ecosystems, and yet there are large knowledge gaps about the specific metabolic pathways in which they are involved. Degradation specifically contributes to nitrogen cycling globally through the breakdown of large organic nitrogen compounds into small inorganic nitrogen that is necessary for the survival of many other organisms. In this study, I focused on the degradative function of the inquiline microbial communities found within the carnivorous pitcher plant, Darlingtonia californica. Darlingtonia grows in …

A Preliminary Study For The Development Of Free Weight Back Squat Muscular Fitness Reference Norms For Adults Aged 19-29, Eden G. Marquez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The barbell back squat is a simple and common resistance training exercise that is used to evaluate muscular fitness. Its use as an evaluative method for muscular fitness in the general population is limited due to a lack of published reference values for this free weight exercise in the general population. This study presents reference values for the back squat muscular fitness in healthy active young adults (aged 19-29). This data is made of 399 subjects (51% male/49% female). Mean ±SD for participants in anthropometric data were 23.1±2.8 years of age, 73.0±12.9 kg weight, 170.6±9.4 cm height, and 25.0±3.4 body …
Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Sp. In Domestic Cattle And Wild Roosevelt Elk: Fecal Pathogens At The Wildlife-Domestic Interface, Emily A. Buck
Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Sp. In Domestic Cattle And Wild Roosevelt Elk: Fecal Pathogens At The Wildlife-Domestic Interface, Emily A. Buck
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Direct or indirect contact between domestic populations of animals and wildlife carries an inherent risk for transmission of pathogens that cause infectious disease. In Humboldt and Del Norte counties of northern California, ongoing conflict between ranchers and Roosevelt elk groups results from elk use of ranching pastures and pastures on private land. Fecal samples from elk in association with cattle, cattle, and from elk not in known association with cattle were assessed for the presence of bacteria Salmonella enterica and pathogenic Escherichia coli to assess whether association with cattle increases risk of infection for elk. Group identity (one of the …
Hormonal Medications And Partner Odor Preferences, Jeffrey Lee Frederick
Hormonal Medications And Partner Odor Preferences, Jeffrey Lee Frederick
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The ability to recognize kin through the olfactory sense has important survival and evolutionary implications when choosing mates. Failing to recognize kin when making a choice of whom to mate with can lead to an increase in detrimental genetic outcomes in offspring. Previous studies have indicated that normally ovulating heterosexual women and men prefer the body odor of those with dissimilar immune systems than those with similar immune systems. The use of hormonal contraceptives has shown a preference for similar immune system odors. The current study examines whether the use of hormonal medications predicts preference for body odor. Importantly, this …

Prevalence Of Rickettsia Sp. Phylotype G022 And Rickettsia Tillamookensis In Ixodes Pacificus Nymphs From Northern California, Erin Rose Trent
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Back in 2011 an unknown Rickettsia species was discovered in adult Ixodes pacificus and became known as Rickettsiaspecies phylotype G022. Preliminary analyses placed it among the Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia, indicating unknown pathogenicity. Another Rickettsia species previously found in I. pacificus, R. tillamookensis, was only recently the subject of research efforts after its original discovery in the 1960s. The main focus of this research was to determine the prevalence of phylotype G022 in nymphal I. pacificus to gain further insight into this tick-Rickettsia relationship. The prevalence of R. tillamookensis was also a topic of this …

Putin's Invasion Of Ukraine: What's Religion Got To Do With It?, Mark R. Elliot
Putin's Invasion Of Ukraine: What's Religion Got To Do With It?, Mark R. Elliot
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Summary
- As of February 24, 2022, as Russian air strikes, missiles, and tanks began pouring into an outmatched Ukraine, the Byzantine calculus of symphonia, of a mutually interdependent church and state, devolved into an unholy alliance joining at the hip a predatory Putin and a sycophantic Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kyrill.
- Especially over the past decade Patriarch Kyrill has tied the fate of his church to that of his patron Putin, the same tragic mistake made by the same church in its defense of tsarist Russia in its death throes.
- Since his accession in 2009, and emphatically since Russia’s moves against …
A Comparison Of Forensic Populations Using The Validity Scales On The Mmpi-3, Steven W. Steinert
A Comparison Of Forensic Populations Using The Validity Scales On The Mmpi-3, Steven W. Steinert
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Examining the impact of different factors influencing the validity of an individual’s self-report during a psychological assessment is important in ensuring valid clinical findings and useful recommendations. These factors are often referred to as response biases. There are multiple types of response bias that can negatively influence the validity of self-reports in clinical assessment contexts. Specifically, individuals undergoing an assessment can be impacted by non-contentbased response bias, overreporting, and underreporting of psychological impairment and/or distress. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) instruments are amongst the leading tools within professional psychology used to identify response bias. The most recent iteration, the MMPI-3, …
Examining The Intention-Behavior Gap: The Impact Of The Food Environment On The Eating Behaviors Of Low-Income African American Women, Karen Glownia
Examining The Intention-Behavior Gap: The Impact Of The Food Environment On The Eating Behaviors Of Low-Income African American Women, Karen Glownia
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The current study investigated environmental barriers to the intention-behavior gap. The food environment was examined as a moderator between motivation for healthy living and actual eating behavior. A sample of 55 low-income African American women (Mage = 30.25, SD = 7.46) completed self-report motivation and eating behavior questionnaires. The food environment was measured by the number and proportion of healthy and unhealthy food retailers in one’s neighborhood using ArcGIS mapping software. The results showed that greater motivation was associated with less unhealthy eating when there was relatively equal access to nearby unhealthy and healthy food retailers. When given …

Repressive Psychiatry As A Means Of Combating Religious Dissidents In The Soviet Union, Oksana Vysoven, Nina Brehunets, Tetyana Lohvynyuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article highlights the impossibility of the coexistence of modern civilization in conditions of impunity for crimes against humanity, which have no statute of limitations, but due to the lack of punishment and concealment of information it creates even greater crimes. Many of the unjustly convicted political prisoners have been rehabilitated since the condemnation of Stalin's cult of personality and his crimes in Soviet Ukraine since 1956. As a result of the mass rehabilitation of political prisoners, the regime gained serious opposition, some of whom сonsisted of evangelical Baptist communities who advocated genuine freedom of conscience. The Soviet regime used …
Why Do I Teach Math This Way: A Qualitative Examination Of How Teacher Experiences Impact The Implementation Of Instructional Practices, Carrie A. Heaney
Why Do I Teach Math This Way: A Qualitative Examination Of How Teacher Experiences Impact The Implementation Of Instructional Practices, Carrie A. Heaney
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Since the 1960s, there has been an effort among the mathematical education community to shift instructional practices from a focus on arithmetic, memorizing rules, and completing practice worksheets to instructional practices that allow students to see mathematics as content that requires thinking and pattern explorations. Many mathematics teachers have not fully embraced these shifts in instructional practice. This study aimed to examine secondary mathematics teachers’ experiences and how those experiences connect to teachers’ implementation of student-centered instructional practices in the lessons they design. This qualitative study utilized a grounded theory approach to examine how a teacher’s experiences as a student …

Previous large studies on the epidemiology and clinical profile of chronic pancreatitis have suggested significant differences in presentation and management in the eastern and western hemispheres. The aim of this systematic review was to compare large multicenter studies across different geographic regions of the world to detect meaningful differences in the presentation and management of this poorly understood disease.
Methods
We identified 237 manuscripts through a comprehensive literature review aiming to identify multicenter studies enrolling more than 200 patients to limit reporting biases. After rigorous screening, 12 studies were included for the final analysis. The Asian studies …
Improving Targeting Of Farmers For Enrollment In Agri-Environmental Programs, Joshua M. Duke, Robert J. Johnston, Amy L. Shober, Zhongyuan Liu
Improving Targeting Of Farmers For Enrollment In Agri-Environmental Programs, Joshua M. Duke, Robert J. Johnston, Amy L. Shober, Zhongyuan Liu
Economics
Agricultural cost-share research and planning tend to focus on one program at a time, and hence overlook additional efficiencies that might be obtained by considering the possibility that enrollment decisions are related across different programs. Models of multiple-program participation decisions enable these relationships to be considered as part of conditional enrollment predictions, providing more complete and accurate understanding of enrollment behavior. Analysis of data from farmer surveys in Maryland and Ohio show complementary drivers across program participation. Results are consistent with economies of scale and/or scope among different agri-environmental programs. The data also show the gains in prediction accuracy when …
Unwavering Support And Relentless Fear: A Narrative Inquiry Into How Mothers Of Adult Children Who Are Registered As Sex Offenders In Florida Experience The Sex Offender Registry, Rules, And Laws, Shelley Kavanagh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Sex Offender Registry and Notification (SORN) and Sex Offender Residency Restrictions (SORR) laws and policies were developed and implemented with the intention of keeping communities and children safe, however many studies illustrate that these policies are in fact resulting in negative consequences for registrants and their families. All the existing studies focused on both registrants and family members, in most cases, spouses. A gap in the literature about the possible impacts on mothers of adult registrants was identified. Further, there was a lack of qualitative research, which, in highlighting the lived experiences and stories of mothers, is powerful and can …
Vegetation Dynamics At Different Spatio-Temporal Scales In Frequently Burned Mixed Conifer Forests, Northern Sierra Nevada Range, California., Asha Paudel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Mixed conifer forests in the Sierra Nevada, California, face threats from frequent highseverity fire associated with climate change and fuel accumulation leading to vegetation shifts at local and landscape scales. Under rapid climate change, a clear understanding of how vegetation responds to single and/or repeated wildfires is still lacking and needs to be investigated. Using field and satellite data, the effects of wildfire on vegetation dynamics were explored at the plot and landscape levels in this dissertation project. Results from the field data suggest that management activities may be required in high-severity burned areas to restore dominance of mixed conifer …
Efficient Implementation Of Post-Quantum Cryptography, Rami Elkhatib
Efficient Implementation Of Post-Quantum Cryptography, Rami Elkhatib
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Cryptography relies on hard mathematical problems that current conventional computers cannot solve in a feasible amount of time. On the other hand, quantum computers, with their quantum mechanic construction, are presumed to be able to solve some of these problems in a reasonable amount of time. More specifically, the current hard problems that public key cryptography relies upon are expected to be easily broken during the quantum era, a time when large-scale quantum computers are available. To address this problem ahead of time, researchers and institutions have proposed post-quantum cryptography (PQC), which is an area of research that focuses on …
Embedding Learning For Complex Dynamic Information Networks, Man Wu
Embedding Learning For Complex Dynamic Information Networks, Man Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
With the rapid development of networking platforms and data intensive applications, networks (or graphs) are becoming convenient and fundamental tools to model the complex inter-dependence among big scale data. As a result, networks (or graphs) are being widely used in many applications, including citation networks [40], social media networks [71], and so on. However, the high complexity (containing many important information) as well as the dynamic nature of the network makes the graph learning task more difficult. To have better graph representations (capture both node content and graph structure), many research efforts have been made to develop reliable and efficient …
Estimation Of The Physical Properties Of Corroding Rebar In Reinforced Concrete Using Biot-Stoll Model Inversion, Matthew Brogden
Estimation Of The Physical Properties Of Corroding Rebar In Reinforced Concrete Using Biot-Stoll Model Inversion, Matthew Brogden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The detection of rebar corrosion in reinforced concrete is important due to the high costs of corrosion related damages to infrastructure. One such method of rebar corrosion lies in the use of non-destructive ultrasonic testing. To date, acoustic methods require either the training of an artificial neural network or a theory of acoustic wave propagation. Using a more complete acoustic model such as the Biot-Stoll model avoids algorithm training requirements by directly modeling the acoustic environment. A problem with this method lies in the complexity of the model and the selection of free parameters. The problem of parameter selection is …
Examing The Effect Of Race On Wrongful Conviction Compensation, Emily R. Albrecht
Examing The Effect Of Race On Wrongful Conviction Compensation, Emily R. Albrecht
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Wrongful convictions have occurred throughout the United States’, but it was not until the creation of the Innocence Project in 1992 that these cases were re-examined. Like other facets of the criminal justice system, racial disparities are present in exoneration research. Studies have found the rate of exoneration is slower for African Americans compared to other races and represent a disproportionate number of rape exonerations relative to their share of the population. Actual compensation is rarely included in analysis, because total compensation awarded has been a black box till now. This is the first study addressing these gaps, by calculating …
Foraging Ecology Of A Wading Bird In Tidally Influenced Habitats: A Sequential Modeling Framework, Marisa Takada Martinez
Foraging Ecology Of A Wading Bird In Tidally Influenced Habitats: A Sequential Modeling Framework, Marisa Takada Martinez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
I used empirical data to inform spatially- and temporally-explicit predictions of time-integrated habitat availability (TiHAB), quantify spatiotemporal patterns of resource selection by Little Blue Herons (Egretta caerulea), and evaluate foraging activity as function of resource availability and prey dynamics. Evaluating resource availability over time accounts for the magnitude and duration of resource change. This approach is useful for understanding mechanisms that underlie resource selection in dynamic environments and for guilds that are sensitive to changes in prey availability like wading birds. I found that average TiHAB varied interannually whereby gains and losses in Little Blue Heron foraging habitat at the …

Identifiability Analysis And Optimal Control Of Infectious Diseases Epidemics And Parameterization Method For (Un)Stable Manifolds Of Implicitly Defined Dynamical Systems, Timsina Archana Neupane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This dissertation is a study about applied dynamical systems on two concentrations. First, on the basis of the growing association between opioid addiction and HIV infection, a compartmental model is developed to study dynamics and optimal control of two epidemics; opioid addiction and HIV infection. We show that the disease-free-equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number R0 = max(Ru0; Rv0) < 1; here Rv0 is the reproduction number of the HIV infection, and Ru0 is the reproduction number of the opioid addiction. The addiction-only boundary equilibrium exists when Ru0 > 1 and it is locally asymptotically stable when the invasion number of the opioid addiction is Ruinv < 1: Similarly, HIV-only boundary equilibrium exists when Rv0 > 1 and it is locally asymptotically stable when the invasion number of the HIV infection is Rvinv < 1. We study structural identifiability of the parameters, estimate parameters employing yearly reported data from Central for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and study practical identifiability of estimated parameters. We observe the basic reproduction number R0 using the parameters. Next, we introduce four distinct controls in the model for the sake of control approach, including treatment for addictions, health care education about not sharing syringes, highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART), and rehab treatment for opiate addicts who are HIV infected. US population using CDC data, first applying a single control in the model and observing the results, we better understand the influence of individual control. After completing each of the four applications, we apply them together at the same time in the model and compare the outcomes using different control bounds and state variable weights. We conclude the results by presenting several graphs.

Incorporating Emotion Recognition In Co-Adaptive Systems, Osamah M. Al-Omair
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The collaboration between human and computer systems has grown astronomically over the past few years. The ability of software systems adapting to human's input is critical in the symbiosis of human-system co-adaptation, where human and software-based systems work together in a close partnership to achieve synergetic goals. However, it is not always clear what kinds of human’s input should be considered to enhance the effectiveness of human and system co-adaptation. To address this issue, this research describes an approach that focuses on incorporating human emotion to improve human-computer co-adaption. The key idea is to provide a formal framework that incorporates …
Influence Of Hydrological Variation On Wading Bird Diets And Reproduction In A Lacustrine Wetland, David A. Essian
Influence Of Hydrological Variation On Wading Bird Diets And Reproduction In A Lacustrine Wetland, David A. Essian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Wetlandscape topography creates spatial variation in hydroperiod, which in turn creates spatial variation in biotic communities. Such spatiotemporal variation occurs on a large scale in some of the most productive wetlands in the world, including those of south Florida, U.S.A. Wading birds (Pelicaniformes and Ciconiiformes) are iconic, top-level consumers of such ecosystems. Infrequent drying is necessary to maintain the primary nest substrate (Salix caroliniana), and prey availability is regulated by production of prey biomass in the wet season and the subsequent concentration of prey biomass into shallow pools during the dry season. The goal of this dissertation was to explicitly …
