Unearthing Evidence For St. Augustine’S Racial Blackness And Paralleling Augustine’S Christian Mystical Religion To Traditional African Religion’S Mysticism, Dillon Cook
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This article undertakes two projects rendering significant ramifications for philosophy/theology, if my assertions are correct. First, the philosopher/theologian known as St. Augustine of Hippo is most saliently recognized as a “white man”; if not a white man, “a European”; if not European, “a man of Rome”; or “Mediterranean”; etc. Outside the intellectual sphere, this is how he is often depicted in art, Penguin Classic books, and so on. Yet ironically, images of Augustine rarely circulate, if at all, as a Black-African-Indigenous person. Was Augustine nonwhite? Evidence is rendered that this is indubitably the case. Could Augustine have been modernly categorized …

Environmental, Social, And Molecular Regulation Of Foraging Behavior In The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Arjun Khadka
Environmental, Social, And Molecular Regulation Of Foraging Behavior In The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Arjun Khadka
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Foraging is a critical activity in social insects, essential for resource acquisition and colony sustenance. In termites, this behavior is shaped by environmental, social, and genetic factors, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined how environmental food and moisture availability, and the age of termites affected foraging activities, along with the molecular regulation of foraging in the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus, using a combination of behavioral assays, transcriptomics, and molecular biology approaches. First, we demonstrate that food and moisture deprivation (FMD) significantly affects foraging, with termites under deprivation conditions exhibiting increased foraging …
Shock Induced Droplet Aerobreakup For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Fluids, James Leung
Shock Induced Droplet Aerobreakup For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Fluids, James Leung
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research investigates shock-induced aerodynamic breakup (aerobreakup) of fluids with different stress-strain behaviors. The central hypothesis is that shear stress from highspeed gas flow manifests differently depending on a fluid’s strain response, influencing droplet breakup morphology, fragment size distribution, and drag-induced acceleration. To test this, experiments and simulations were performed on μm–mm sized droplets of Newtonian (water) and shear-thinning fluids (nanofluids or xanthan gum). Two experimental setups were used: an open-ended shock tube and a closed conventional shock tube. In the openended setup, a normal shock impacts a stationary droplet held by an acoustic levitator. Droplet breakup and gas dynamics …

Mytilus galloprovincialis and M. trossulus co-occur and hybridize along set biogeographical ranges of temperature and salinity along the Pacific coast, USA. However, the role of physiological traits in mussel distribution remains poorly understood. We investigated metabolic rate, antioxidant activity (superoxide dismutase, catalase), oxidative damage (malondialdehyde content, MDA), and clearance rate of M. trossulus under multiple stressors: 7 days of hyposalinity (20, 28, 34 ppt), followed by an acute heat shock (17, 20, 25 ◦C). We found a significant effect of temperature on metabolic rate, an interaction effect on antioxidant activity, and MDA, and independent temperature and salinity effects on clearance …

Mansoura Engineering Journal
With the advancement of machine learning techniques, the introduction of the most accurate model has become a necessity. In real-world scenarios, every model has some constraints and assimilates errors, so their performance is not always highly efficient; this sparked the development of ensemble learning. The ensemble approach aims to consolidate the strengths of existing approaches and minimize their weaknesses or decision-making risks. The proposed diabetes prediction system encases a resampling filter, applied to balance the dataset and model builder method, i.e., without the SBV ensemble and with the SBV ensemble method. The model is initially built without using the SBV …

Pacific Faculty Work
Background and Objectives: Nicotine is the most well-studied toxic substance in cigarette smoke and e-cigarette vape. However, smoke and vape are composed of other components that have a negative impact on health. The objective of this study is to investigate whether nicotine has a distinctive impact on molecular mechanisms in stem cells. Methods: The cellular impact of nicotine on the regenerative capacity of human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and the microRNA (miRNA) profile was examined. Bioinformatic analysis was performed to identify miRNA-regulated cellular pathways associated with nicotine exposure. These pathways were then compared to those induced by cigarette smoke …
Dynamic Sparsification In Secure Gradient Aggregation For Federated Learning, Bikash Samanta
Dynamic Sparsification In Secure Gradient Aggregation For Federated Learning, Bikash Samanta
Master’s Dissertations
Secure aggregation is a critical component of privacy-preserving federated learning. However, existing fixed-sparsity approaches often incur unnecessary communication overhead. We present DynamicSecAgg, a novel framework that introduces dynamic sparsity while preserving coordinate-level privacy. Our method achieves significant improvements in communication efficiency while maintaining — and in some cases improving — model accuracy across both IID and non-IID user distributions. The framework maintains information-theoretic privacy guarantees via adaptive gradient thresholding and polynomial-based aggregation, proving particularly effective under heterogeneous data settings. These results establish dynamic sparsity as a key optimization for efficient and privacy-preserving federated learning.

Cloud-Assisted Multi-Channel Data Broadcasting, Debabrata Maji
Master’s Dissertations
The convergence of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing has transformed technology, impacting commerce, industrial production, data management, etc. Multi- Channel Broadcast Encryption (MCBE), first introduced by Phan et al. (ASIACCS 2013), is a cryptographic encryption primitive used for both IoT and Cloud that permits a sender to e!ciently and securely encrypt several messages for di”erent groups of receivers. After thoroughly exploring the existing literature, we observe that none achieves the robust provable security within the standard model. This paper addresses this gap, aiming to achieve adaptive INDistinguishable under full-IDentity Chosen-Ciphertext Attack (IND-ID-CCA) security by constructing an e!cient identity-based …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The rapid evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has underscored the need for a detailed understanding of antibody binding mechanisms to combat immune evasion by emerging variants. In this study, we investigated the interactions between Class I neutralizing antibodies—BD55-1205, BD-604, OMI-42, P5S-1H1, and P5S-2B10—and the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein using multiscale modeling, which combined molecular simulations with the ensemble-based mutational scanning of the binding interfaces and binding free energy computations. A central theme emerging from this work is that the unique binding strength and resilience to immune escape of the BD55-1205 antibody are determined by leveraging a broad epitope …

Story Forge: A Card-Based Framework For Ai-Assisted Interactive Storytelling, Yaojiong Yu, Gianni Corino, Mike Phillips
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The application of artificial intelligence has significantly advanced interactive storytelling. However, current research has predominantly concentrated on the content generation capabilities of AI, primarily following a one-way ‘input-direct generation’ model. This has led to limited practicality in AI story writing, mainly due to the absence of investigations into user-driven creative processes. Consequently, users often perceive AI-generated suggestions as unhelpful and unsatisfactory. This study introduces a novel creative tool named Story Forge, which incorporates a card-based interactive narrative approach. By utilizing interactive story element cards, the tool facilitates the integration of narrative components with artificial intelligence-generated content to establish an interactive …

The Microtubule-Severing Enzyme Spastin Regulates Spindle Dynamics To Promote Chromosome Segregation In Trypanosoma Brucei, Thiago Souza Onofre, Qing Zhou, Ziyin Li
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Microtubule-severing enzymes play essential roles in diverse cellular processes, including mitosis and cytokinesis, by modulating microtubule dynamics. In the early branching Trypanosoma brucei, microtubule-severing enzymes are involved in cytokinesis and flagellum length control, but none of them have been found to regulate mitosis. Here we report the characterization of the microtubule-severing enzyme spastin in the procyclic form of T. brucei. We demonstrate that spastin severs microtubule in vitro and overexpression of spastin disrupts spindle microtubules in vivo in trypanosomes, leading to defective chromosome segregation. Knockdown of spastin impairs spindle integrity and disrupts chromosome alignment and segregation. We further show that …

Organizational socialization and the practice of onboarding new hires are central human resources functions. However, traditional socialization theory and practice were built on assumptions that are increasingly misaligned with today's work context. We identified four current, emerging, and future work trends that characterize the evolving landscape surrounding organizational socialization: technological advancement, the expansion of remote work arrangements, rising societal loneliness and mental health challenges, and aging workforce demographics. Collectively, these trends have contributed to dramatic shifts in the context and performance of work, as well as the expectations that employees and organizations hold for one another. Accordingly, we argue that …
Investigating The Relationships Among Suspended Sediment Concentration, And Marsh Edge Erosion In Barataria Bay, La, Lily Vowels
Investigating The Relationships Among Suspended Sediment Concentration, And Marsh Edge Erosion In Barataria Bay, La, Lily Vowels
LSU Master's Theses
Barataria Bay, Louisiana, USA exhibits a unique microtidal, wind-driven hydrodynamic climate where extensive levee infrastructure throughout Louisiana has starved Barataria Bay and similar interdistributary bays of the historic levels of terrigenous sediment import. This has contributed to extreme coastal wetland loss in Louisiana. This project seeks to understand how hydrodynamic and meteorological conditions are linked to sediments’ fate after erosion from the marsh edge. Specifically, this project seeks to differentiate the roles of wave resuspension and marsh edge erosion (MEE) in sediment dynamics in Barataria Bay. An acoustic wave and current profiler (AWAC) was used to capture hydrodynamic conditions, and …

Exploring Victorian Era Class And Culture: Representation Of The Working Class Through Joseph Skipsey's Poetry, Nathasya Josephine
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Representation of minorities has always been a problem in publication. This is especially true in Victorian society, where class stratification was rampant and class distinctions were marked as normal. As a result, many authors from underprivileged communities are overshadowed by the influential literary giants we now know as the Canons. This paper aims to shed light on one of the unknown voices representing Victorian working-class society. Specifically, it will discuss Joseph Skipsey, a working-class author who writes poems about his daily life and struggles as a miner. The focus will be on two of his poems: "Get Up" and The …

Agency Protocol: A Decentralized Trust-Building System Using Domain-Specific Merit And Economic Stakes To Incentivize Promise-Keeping In Agent-To-Agent Interactions, David Joseph
Defensive Publications Series
The Agency Protocol defines a decentralized trust infrastructure in which autonomous agents cooperate by issuing cryptographically‑signed, domain‑scoped promises and verifiable assessments. Each promise carries a dual‑component stake—an at‑risk credit deposit and a non‑refundable operational‑cost fee—that is locked in content‑addressed storage and returned or slashed according to assessment consensus. Assessments are merit‑weighted; an agent’s merit is a non‑transferable, domain‑specific reputation score updated by matrix‑factorized aggregation of historical outcomes, while credits form a fully transferable internal currency. Merit discounts future stake requirements, creating a positive feedback loop that makes honest behaviour utility‑maximising.

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Late-onset sepsis (LOS; sepsis occurring after the first 72 hours of life) increases the morbidity and mortality of premature neonates, especially those with very-low-birth weight (≤1500g). In LOS, Enterobacter cloacae has been rarely described as a cause of secondary brain abscesses. Our case report summarizes important aspects of cerebral abscesses due to an E. cloacae sepsis in a preterm neonate. Our patient received surgical abscess drainage and rational antibiotic treatment employing prolonged meropenem infusions plus fosfomycin and subsequent treatment with oral trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Furthermore, we present a review of the current literature from 2009-2022, comparing cases similar to our case.

Objective: This study uses various hematological inflammatory parameters to evaluate the diagnostic distinction between testicular torsion (TT) and epididymo-orchitis (EO). These include the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, systemic inflammation response index, panimmune inflammation value, derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and neutrophil-lymphocyte-platelet ratio. Methods: The demographic data and hemogram parameters of TT and EO cases treated in the pediatric surgery clinic between January 2010 and January 2023 were retrospectively examined. The hematological inflammatory parameters were statistically compared across the groups. Results: The study included 181 patients, categorized into control (n = 60), TT (n = 64), and EO …

Objectives: Pediatric ICU survivors experience a collection of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social symptoms named post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). We aimed to quantify PICS morbidities from multiple stakeholder perspectives across domains. Methods: Using physician, neuropsychologist, and parent/caregiver completed outcome measures across domains in a cross-sectional analysis of 186 children between the ages of 8 and 19 years with data from a PICU follow-up clinic 1-3 months after PICU discharge, we quantified PICS morbidities and used Spearman correlation to evaluate interdependence of PICS domains. Results: Compared to pre-hospitalization functioning, new PICS related morbidities were observed and significant correlations were identified between …
