Inferences Training Affects Memory, Rumination, And Mood, B. Perlman, N. Mor, Y. Wisney Jacobinski, A. Doron Zakon, N. Avirbach, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Making negative inferences for negative events, ruminating about them, and retrieving negative aspects of memories have all been associated with depression. However, the causal mechanisms that link negative inferences to negative mood and the interplay between inferences, rumination, and memory have not been explored. In the current study, we used a cognitive-bias modification (CBM) procedure to train causal inferences and assessed training effects on ruminative thinking, memory, and negative mood among people with varying levels of depression. Training had immediate effects on negative mood and rumination but not after recall of a negative autobiographical memory. Note that training affected memory: …

Psychiatric And Neuropsychological Sequelae Of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, Carla F. Cabrera, Charles J. Golden Jan 2022

Psychiatric And Neuropsychological Sequelae Of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, Carla F. Cabrera, Charles J. Golden

Archives of Assessment Psychology

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), often from the Type 1 (HSV-1) viral infection. This neurotropic double-stranded DNA virus impairs the integrity and permeability of the blood-brain barrier, allowing the virus to enter the brain. In several studies, HSV-1 impacts the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and limbic system, leading to brain damage. While significant progress has occurred in understanding this infection, clinicians should be vigilant for acute and chronic complications associated with HSE, such as autoimmune encephalitis, differential diagnoses, and psychological disorders. A growing body of literature focuses on the evidence of an association …

Revisiting The Need For Age-Based Norms In Personality Assessment Using The Cleveland Adaptive Personality Questionnaire, Amir M. Poreh, Jennifer B. Levin Jan 2022

Revisiting The Need For Age-Based Norms In Personality Assessment Using The Cleveland Adaptive Personality Questionnaire, Amir M. Poreh, Jennifer B. Levin

Archives of Assessment Psychology

The need for age-based norms in personality assessment is of great interest given the trend of adjusting for demographic variables in neurocognitive evaluations. We examined the need for age-based norms using the Cleveland Adaptive Personality Questionnaire (CAPQ; Poreh & Levin, 2019) in 1,646 individuals ages 25 to 95 years (M = 44.5, SD = 16.1). Results showed that scores on the CAPQ clinical scales linearly declined across the lifespan in conjunction with a linear increase in measures of social desirability. Power analysis indicated that the CAPQ Avoidant scale produced the most significant effect, followed by a moderate effect for the …

Creating A Welcoming, Inclusive, And Affirming Primary Care Environment For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex And Asexual Patients, Samantha Korbey

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

The LGBTQIA+ community has long faced disparities in healthcare which have had significant consequences including increased cancer risk factors and poorer health outcomes when compared to the cisgender, heterosexual community. Interventions are needed to increase the knowledge and cultural competency of providers, to create welcoming and safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ patients, and to encourage disclosure of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).

The purpose of this DNP project was to adapt, implement, and evaluate an evidence-based model for creating an affirming, inclusive, culturally competent, and safe primary care environment for LGBTQIA+ patients within a family practice center. This quality improvement …

Enhancing The Assessment Of Suicidal Ideation In The Long-Term Care Environment: A Quality Improvement Project, Carissa Ann Tufano Jan 2022

Enhancing The Assessment Of Suicidal Ideation In The Long-Term Care Environment: A Quality Improvement Project, Carissa Ann Tufano

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Abstract Despite high rates of depression and risk factors for suicide, there is a knowledge deficit and lack of protocol surrounding the assessment of suicidal ideation in the long-term care setting. Although studies examining suicide in the long-term care setting are lacking, the prevalence of suicidal ideation is high. This DNP quality improvement project addressed this problem by creating a suicide assessment and management inservice for frontline clinical staff at a skilled nursing facility in Connecticut. The inservice integrated use of an adapted suicide assessment algorithm and a suicide screening tool, the P4 Screener. A SAMHSA toolkit was utilized as …

Cryo-Em Structure Of Transmembrane Aaa+ Protease Ftsh In The Adp State, Wu Liu, Martien Schoonen, Tong Wang, Sean Mcsweeney, Qun Liu Jan 2022

Cryo-Em Structure Of Transmembrane Aaa+ Protease Ftsh In The Adp State, Wu Liu, Martien Schoonen, Tong Wang, Sean Mcsweeney, Qun Liu

Advanced Science Research Center

AAA+ proteases regulate numerous physiological and cellular processes through tightly regulated proteolytic cleavage of protein substrates driven by ATP hydrolysis. FtsH is the only known family of membrane-anchored AAA+ proteases essential for membrane protein quality control. Although a spiral staircase rotation mechanism for substrate translocation across the FtsH pore has been proposed, the detailed conformational changes among various states have not been clear due to absence of FtsH structures in these states. We report here the cryo-EM structure for Thermotoga maritima FtsH (TmFtsH) in a fully ADP-bound symmetric state. Comparisons of the ADP-state structure with its apo-state and a substrate-engaged …

European Union Law In The Member State Courts: A Comparative View, Michael Wells Jan 2022

European Union Law In The Member State Courts: A Comparative View, Michael Wells

Scholarly Works

Both the European Union and the United States are federal systems. Both divide law-making authority between the central government and the member states. Each has a dual judicial system, consisting of member state courts and central government courts. But the EU and the U.S. approaches to federalism diverge in two important ways. First, unlike the U.S., the EU has no system of lower federal courts. Second, in the U.S., the Supreme Court may review state court rulings that turn on issues of federal law. The European Court of Justice has no power of appellate review over the Member State courts. …

A Study Of The Language Shifts In The Book Of Daniel : A Comparative Narrative Analysis Of Daniel 1 And 2, 7 And 8, Laura K. Morrow Jan 2022

A Study Of The Language Shifts In The Book Of Daniel : A Comparative Narrative Analysis Of Daniel 1 And 2, 7 And 8, Laura K. Morrow

Dissertations

Problem

The problem this dissertation seeks to address is the use of bilingualism in the book of Daniel. Previously, scholars have utilized diachronic methods to explain the phenomenon of bilingualism in Daniel and have concluded that it is the product of compositional redaction. However, such studies have not produced a consensus in scholarship. In the last 40 years, several studies have emerged that conclude the use of bilingualism in the book of Daniel may best be explained as a rhetorical device. In contrast to the diachronic methodologies of prior studies, these examinations utilized methodologies that addressed rhetorical elements. Chapter One …

An Investigation Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy, The Sources Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy, And Mathematics Achievement Among Primary School Students In Trinidad And Tobago, Ronald Sinanan Jan 2022

An Investigation Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy, The Sources Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy, And Mathematics Achievement Among Primary School Students In Trinidad And Tobago, Ronald Sinanan

Dissertations

Purpose of the Study

This dissertation addressed two problems in the literature. Firstly, while many study findings have highlighted the critical role of self-efficacy in students' achievement, additional research was needed about the four hypothesized sources that influence the improvement of students' mathematics self-efficacy. Many studies on self-efficacy sources were conducted with measures not closely tied to social cognitive theory and have not demonstrated sufficient reliability. Using the Sources of Mathematics SelfEfficacy Scale, Usher and Pajares (2009) addressed this problem. They suggested several recommendations for future research (Usher & Pajares, 2008b, 2009), including exploring the validity of their scale in …

"You Must Prophesy Again": The Mission Of God's People In Revelation 10-14, Adenilton Tavares De Aguiar Jan 2022

"You Must Prophesy Again": The Mission Of God's People In Revelation 10-14, Adenilton Tavares De Aguiar

Dissertations

The primary task of this study was to delineate the theology of mission in the book of Revelation, with a focus on chaps. 10–14 and special attention to the people of God as participants in the mission of God. The historical survey demonstrated that the theology of mission conveyed by the book of Revelation is a topic broadly neglected in recent scholarship and, hence, requires an in-depth treatment. The object of research was addressed from a biblical-theological perspective by means of an exegetical analysis of relevant passages and key terms that were identified on the basis of a semantic field …

Endogenous Retroviral Proteins As Potential Drug Targets For Merlin-Deficient Tumours, Bora Agit Jan 2022

Endogenous Retroviral Proteins As Potential Drug Targets For Merlin-Deficient Tumours, Bora Agit

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Merlin is a tumour suppressor, and its loss is the major cause of a hereditary disease Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) characterised by the development of multiple tumours of the nervous system such as schwannomas, meningiomas and ependymomas. Current surgical treatments and radiotherapy for this group of tumours are not fully effective and there is an urgent need for new therapeutic options. Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are retroviruses that have been incorporated into the human genome during evolution, now comprising 5% of it. The majority of HERVs are defective except for a few groups, including type K (HERV-K) which kept full-intact …

Credit Scoring Duality, Pamela Foohey, Sara Sternberg Greene Jan 2022

Credit Scoring Duality, Pamela Foohey, Sara Sternberg Greene

Scholarly Works

Credit scoring is central to people’s financial growth and prosperity or financial decline and stagnation. People with a good credit score and accompanying credit report can buy opportunities to advance economically. The benefits they reap from their attractiveness to lenders and employers helps feed their future success. In contrast, people with a fair or poor credit score become stuck in cycle of high interest rates and costly loan terms, large required down payments, and denied applications for rentals, cell phone plans, and employment. Employers, service providers, lenders, and alternative financial service providers have begun to use alternative credit scoring models, …

Isaac Newton As A Prophetic Interpreter, Kenneth Jørgensen Jan 2022

Isaac Newton As A Prophetic Interpreter, Kenneth Jørgensen

Dissertations

Throughout his life, Sir Isaac Newton was deeply dedicated to the science of decoding biblical apocalyptic writings. To understand and appreciate Newton's prophetic scheme, it will be advantagous to have a certain grasp of what sources and ideas might have influenced him. No comprehensive study before this one has helped us see Newton from that perspective. A survey of the development of canonical apocalyptic hermeneutic and interpretation, beginning before the time of Christ and ending with Newton, shows that four distinct systems of hermeneutics had developed by that time. Historicism was the earliest and the preferred system among Protestants until …

Presence, Sources And Transport Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In The Arctic Ocean, Lihong Zhang, Yuxin Ma, Simon Vojta, Maya Morales-Mcdevitt, Mario Hopggmann, Thomas Soltwedel, Jane Kirk, Amila De Silva, Derek Muir, Rainer Lohmann Jan 2022

Presence, Sources And Transport Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In The Arctic Ocean, Lihong Zhang, Yuxin Ma, Simon Vojta, Maya Morales-Mcdevitt, Mario Hopggmann, Thomas Soltwedel, Jane Kirk, Amila De Silva, Derek Muir, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are continuously released from multiple sources and are prone to long-range transport. Little is known regarding their presence, transport and fate in remote and deep oceans. Polyethylene passive samplers were hence deployed at deep moorings and surface seawater in the Fram Strait and Canadian Archipelago, as well as in air and surface water of the lower Great Lakes, a potential high-emission region, to understand the transport of PAHs to the Arctic. Dissolved PAHs showed significantly higher concentrations in the lower Great Lakes than those in the high Arctic. Concentrations of dissolved PAHs (Σ19PAHs) ranged …

Genome Assembly Of The Chemosynthetic Endosymbiont Of The Hydrothermal Vent Snail Alviniconcha Adamantis From The Mariana Arc, Corrina Breusing, Nathan Hagen Klobusnik, Michelle A. Hauer, Roxanne A. Beinart Jan 2022

Genome Assembly Of The Chemosynthetic Endosymbiont Of The Hydrothermal Vent Snail Alviniconcha Adamantis From The Mariana Arc, Corrina Breusing, Nathan Hagen Klobusnik, Michelle A. Hauer, Roxanne A. Beinart

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Chemosynthetic animal-microbe symbioses sustain hydrothermal vent communities in the global deep sea. In the Indo-Pacific Ocean, hydrothermal ecosystems are often dominated by gastropod species of the genus Alviniconcha, which live in association with chemosynthetic Gammaproteobacteria or Campylobacteria. While the symbiont genomes of most extant Alviniconcha species have been sequenced, no genome information is currently available for the gammaproteobacterial endosymbiont of Alviniconcha adamantis—a comparatively shallow living species that is thought to be the ancestor to all other present Alviniconcha lineages. Here, we report the first genome sequence for the symbiont of A. adamantis from the Chamorro Seamount at the …

Potential Interactions Between Diatoms And Bacteria Are Shaped By Trace Element Gradients In The Southern Ocean, Alexa R. Sterling, Laura Z. Holland, Randelle M. Bundy, Shannon M. Burns, Kristen N. Buck, P. Dreux Chappell, Bethany D. Jenkins Jan 2022

Potential Interactions Between Diatoms And Bacteria Are Shaped By Trace Element Gradients In The Southern Ocean, Alexa R. Sterling, Laura Z. Holland, Randelle M. Bundy, Shannon M. Burns, Kristen N. Buck, P. Dreux Chappell, Bethany D. Jenkins

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The growth of diatoms in the Southern Ocean, especially the region surrounding the West Antarctic Peninsula, is frequently constrained by low dissolved iron and other trace metal concentrations. This challenge may be overcome by mutualisms between diatoms and co-occurring associated bacteria, in which diatoms produce organic carbon as a substrate for bacterial growth, and bacteria produce siderophores, metal-binding ligands that can supply diatoms with metals upon uptake as well as other useful secondary compounds for diatom growth like vitamins. To examine the relationships between diatoms and bacteria in the plankton (diatom) size class (> 3 µm), we sampled both bacterial …

Efficient Elliptic Curve Operators For Jacobian Coordinates, Wesam Eid, Turki F. Al-Somani, Marius C. Silaghi Jan 2022

Efficient Elliptic Curve Operators For Jacobian Coordinates, Wesam Eid, Turki F. Al-Somani, Marius C. Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The speed up of group operations on elliptic curves is proposed using a new type of projective coordinate representation. These operations are the most common computations in key exchange and encryption for both current and postquantum technology. The boost this improvement brings to computational efficiency impacts not only encryption efforts but also attacks. For maintaining security, the community needs to take note of this development as it may need to operate changes in the key size of various algorithms. Our proposed projective representation can be viewed as a warp on the Jacobian projective coordinates, or as a new operation replacing …

Patterns Of Relative Bacterial Richness And Community Composition In Seawater And Marine Sediment Are Robust For Both Operational Taxonomic Units And Amplicon Sequence Variants, Zak Kerrigan, Steven D'Hondt Jan 2022

Patterns Of Relative Bacterial Richness And Community Composition In Seawater And Marine Sediment Are Robust For Both Operational Taxonomic Units And Amplicon Sequence Variants, Zak Kerrigan, Steven D'Hondt

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

To understand the relative influences of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) on patterns of marine microbial diversity and community composition, we examined bacterial diversity and community composition of seawater from 12 sites in the North Atlantic Ocean and Canadian Arctic and sediment from two sites in the North Atlantic. For the seawater analyses, we included samples from three to six zones in the water column of each site. For the sediment analyses, we included over 20 sediment horizons at each of two sites. For all samples, we amplified the V4–V5 hypervariable region of the 16S ribosomal …

Pre-Licensed Counselor Experiences Of Effective And Multiculturally Competent Clinical Supervision, Michelle Lee Byrd Jan 2022

Pre-Licensed Counselor Experiences Of Effective And Multiculturally Competent Clinical Supervision, Michelle Lee Byrd

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Clinical Supervision is a critical cornerstone of ethical and competent counseling. A significant element in the practice of effective supervision is the necessity for clinical supervisors to provide multiculturally competent clinical supervision. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to capture the lived experiences of pre-licensure counselors describing effective clinical supervision and how the multicultural competence of their supervisor(s) impacted their experience of effective clinical supervision. Semi-structured interviews with four participants and an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) were utilized. The results indicated four primary/ordinate themes. First, there are specific qualities of effective supervision. Second, it is important to supervisees that …

Examining Gender Differences In A Forensic Sample Using The Personality Assessment Inventory, Rebecca Elliott Jan 2022

Examining Gender Differences In A Forensic Sample Using The Personality Assessment Inventory, Rebecca Elliott

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Rates of female criminality appear to be rising (The Sentencing Project, 2022), and thus more women are likely to present for evaluation in a forensic capacity. A majority of research in the field of criminal behavior has focused exclusively on male populations. A dearth of research examining risk factors among female offenders has led to a lack of empirically validated tools used to assess women. Additionally, research on gender differences within a forensic population representing a wide range of referral questions has not been conducted. Women offenders present with unique and different risk factors than men (Grimbos et al., 2016); …

Associations Of Short And Medium Chain Saturated Fatty Acids And Dairy With Cognitive Functioning In The Boston Puerto Rican Health Study, Sophie M. Kenny Jan 2022

Associations Of Short And Medium Chain Saturated Fatty Acids And Dairy With Cognitive Functioning In The Boston Puerto Rican Health Study, Sophie M. Kenny

Master's Theses and Capstones

Cognitive decline is a major public health concern. Evidence suggests that Hispanic/Latino adults, specifically Puerto Rican adults, in the US are at a higher risk of developing dementia or cognitive decline due to the high prevalence of risk factors, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Emerging evidence suggests that specific dietary fatty acids, short and medium-chain-length saturated fatty acids, that are found in dairy may be beneficial for cognitive function. However, there are limited observational studies examining the effects of SMCSFA and dairy on cognitive function in Hispanic/Latino adults. We examined the cross-sectional and prospective associations between SMCSFA and dairy consumption …

Investigaion Of The Gamma Hurdle Model For A Single Population Mean, Alissa Jacobs Jan 2022

Investigaion Of The Gamma Hurdle Model For A Single Population Mean, Alissa Jacobs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A common issue in some statistical inference problems is dealing with a high frequency of zeroes in a sample of data. For many distributions such as the gamma, optimal inference procedures do not allow for zeroes to be present. In practice, however, it is natural to observe real data sets where nonnegative distributions would make sense to model but naturally zeroes will occur. One example of this is in the analysis of cost in insurance claim studies. One common approach to deal with the presence of zeroes is using a hurdle model. Most literary work on hurdle models will focus …

Optimizing Whistleblowing, Usha Rodrigues Jan 2022

Optimizing Whistleblowing, Usha Rodrigues

Scholarly Works

Whistleblowers have exposed misconduct in settings ranging from public health to national security. Whistleblowing thus consistently plays a vital role in safeguarding society. But how much whistleblowing is optimal? And how many meritless claims should we tolerate to reach that optimum? Surprisingly, legislators and scholars have overlooked these essential questions, a neglect that has resulted in undertheorized, stab-in-the-dark whistleblower regimes, risking both overdeterrence and underdeterrence.

This Article confronts the question of optimal whistleblowing in the context of financial fraud. Design choices, which play out along two axes, have profound effects on the successful implementation of whistleblowing policy. One axis varies …

Bargaining For Abolition, Zohra Ahmed Jan 2022

Bargaining For Abolition, Zohra Ahmed

Scholarly Works

What if instead of seeing criminal court as an institution driven by the operation of rules, we saw it as a workplace where people labor to criminalize those with the misfortune to be prosecuted? I offer three different ways to think about labor in criminal court: (1) labor as a source of sociological value, (2) labor as an input that generates certain measurable outcomes, and (3) labor as a vehicle to advance abolitionist reforms. First, through their quotidian activities, criminal courts’ workers enact a practical philosophy that communicates lessons about who and how we value each other. Drawing on ethnographic …

This article is about the importance of the copyright law jurisprudence from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. This appellate court turns 40 in 2021, and it has rendered many influential copyright law decisions in the last four decades. Its body of work is impressive. This article discusses the court’s important decisions in the following areas: the originality standard; the application of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Feist decision to compilations, directories, computer software, architectural works, and other creative works like movies, photographs, and characters; copyright protection for unfixed works; the scope of the government edicts doctrine; and, …

Popular Enforcement Of Controversial Legislation, Randy Beck Jan 2022

Popular Enforcement Of Controversial Legislation, Randy Beck

Scholarly Works

Texas opted for popular enforcement of Senate Bill 8 (S.B. 8), prohibiting abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected. In an effort to prevent pre-enforcement judicial review, the legislature precluded enforcement of the statute by government officials. Instead, any member of the public may sue for statutory damages of at least $10,000 from any person who (1) performs an abortion violating the statute, (2) knowingly aids or abets such an abortion, or (3) “intends” to perform or aid and abet such an abortion.

The cause of action authorized by S.B. 8 is a “popular action,” a once common method …
