An Application Of Fuzzy Cluster Analysis In The Classification Of Grazing Retrogressive Succession Stages Of The Stipa Steppe, Chen Qing Cheng Jul 2025

An Application Of Fuzzy Cluster Analysis In The Classification Of Grazing Retrogressive Succession Stages Of The Stipa Steppe, Chen Qing Cheng

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In this paper, two methods of Fuzzy Cluster Analysis-the A cut-set classification and the Interative Self-organization Data Analysis technique (ISODATA method)-are introduced to the classification of plant communities. The results show that using these methods, one may classify a number of sample quadrats obtained from vegetation mosaic which fails to possess definite lines among communities by means of random sampling rapidly and correctly. Moreover, it seems that the combination of the principal components analysis (PCA) and the ISODATA method in the classification is successful in reducing the subjective influence of the research worker and their results can be compared and …

Regulating Grass And Clover Growth With Mefludide, R J. Haggar, S P. Isaac Jul 2025

Regulating Grass And Clover Growth With Mefludide, R J. Haggar, S P. Isaac

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A three-year study on the use of mefluidide, a plant growth regulator, for suppressing seed-head production in a range of grass is reported. The first stage, involving the evaluation of a range of does and timings on up to nine grass species, indicated the potential of mefluidide applied at 150 g ha-1 in early spring to prevent the normal decline in herbage quality associated with flowering and to transfer growth from spring to mid-summer, albeit at a loss of some 30% in total dry-matter production. A supplementary investigation showed that white clover was reasonably tolerant to mefluidide treatment although a …

Using Grinding Energy Measurements For Predicting Crude Fibre Content In First Growths Of Permanent Grassland, Chr Paul, U V. Borstel, E Zimmer Jul 2025

Using Grinding Energy Measurements For Predicting Crude Fibre Content In First Growths Of Permanent Grassland, Chr Paul, U V. Borstel, E Zimmer

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The performance of a grinding energy test for the simple and rapid prediction of crude fibre content in spring growth of grassland was investigated during three successive years and its potential for deriving recommendations on appropriate cutting dates demonstrated. The grinding energy test appeared to achieve a precision comparable to that for near infrared based predictions of crude fibre reported from the literature. Prediction bias consisting in a mean 2% crude fibre underestimation was found to occur in one year presumably due to an anomalous _constellation of environmental conditions. This appeared to have affected the pattern of plant development and …

Fast And Reliable Gpu-Based Voxelization For 3d-Printing, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

This invention introduces new voxelization techniques to address challenges in processing large, detailed industrial models—such as high computational cost, geometric inconsistencies, and the lack of robust evaluation metrics—aiming to advance high-precision 3D printing. It features three innovations: a refinement technique that achieves conservative voxelization while optimizing memory and computation; a method for handling non-manifold edges and vertices to improve geometric integrity; and new metrics for evaluating voxelization accuracy. Together, these techniques enhance voxelization performance and reliability, enabling more precise and scalable 3D printing solutions.

Novel Ejector Latch Detection Mechanism Using Proximity Sensor In Pluggable Circuit Pack, Anonymous Jul 2025

Novel Ejector Latch Detection Mechanism Using Proximity Sensor In Pluggable Circuit Pack, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a latch detection mechanism for pluggable circuit packs used in networking equipment, such as modules, line cards, plugs, or blades inserted into network element housings. Existing latch solutions are limited by insufficient finger access to Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules and optical fibers, low detection resolution causing delayed redundancy activation, excessive faceplate space requirements, and mechanical reliability concerns. To address these issues, the proposed design positions the ejector latch away from the faceplate by extending the faceplate itself, creating improved manual access to optical components. The latch incorporates a spring-loaded lever mechanism and integrates a …

Strategies To Promote The Participation Of Mauritian Women In The Artificial Intelligence Sector, Toolsy Luchmun Jul 2025

Strategies To Promote The Participation Of Mauritian Women In The Artificial Intelligence Sector, Toolsy Luchmun

Journal of International Women's Studies

This exploratory study investigates strategies to promote the participation of Mauritian women in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Using a mixed-method approach, the research evaluates the current state of AI in Mauritius, identifies challenges faced by women in pursuing AI careers, and proposes evidence-based strategies for fostering gender inclusion in the sector. Primary data were collected through surveys administered to Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) professionals, and quantitative analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 27.0. Additionally, qualitative insights were derived from an open-ended question in the survey, allowing respondents to share their perspectives. Secondary data were gathered …

Gender, Marginalization, And Digital Technology In Islamic Learning: A Nigerian Perspective, Abdulgafar Olawale Fahm Jul 2025

Gender, Marginalization, And Digital Technology In Islamic Learning: A Nigerian Perspective, Abdulgafar Olawale Fahm

Journal of International Women's Studies

The integration of digital technologies has significantly transformed the landscape of Islamic education in Nigeria, enhancing accessibility to religious knowledge while simultaneously reinforcing pre-existing socio-cultural disparities. Utilizing an intersectional analytical framework, this study critically explores how gender, socio-economic diversity, and Islamophobia collectively influence experiences within digital Islamic learning environments. Employing qualitative feminist methodologies, I conducted semi-structured interviews from November to December of 2024 with Islamic scholars, educators, students, and general digital platform users from Lagos, Ilorin, and Maiduguri. The findings indicate that intersecting factors such as gender roles, socio-economic conditions, geographical location, and Islamophobic attitudes distinctly shape patterns of digital …

Envisioning Transgender Equity: Amplifying Global South Narratives Through Inclusive Archives And Education, Saloni Walia, Sukanya Mondal

Journal of International Women's Studies

In their 17 Sustainable Goals (SDGs) for 2030, the United Nations (n. d.) places the goal of “achieve[ing] Gender Equality and empower[ing] all women and girls” at the fifth spot as SDG 5. However, reports from 2016 reveal that the SDGs mainly focus on issues concerning heterosexual cisgender women and girls, with no reference to the LGBTQ community (United Nations, 2016). This oversight raises concerns about the inclusivity of SDG 3, which aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” (United Nations, n.d.), but its application to people with diverse gender identities remains unclear. This …

Journal of Child Science

Background: Nephrotic syndrome, characterized by glomerular damage, primarily affects children. While renal symptoms have been extensively studied, there is growing concern about cardiac complications, particularly the prolongation of the QTc interval, which can increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. This study aimed to assess the QTc interval in children diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome and explore the factors affecting QTc prolongation. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 42 children aged 2-10 years diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome in Mashhad from 2019 to 2020. Data on age, gender, and blood samples to measure the levels of albumin, …

There's Not Enough Cement And Too Much Air In That Concrete: Addressing The Weakness Of The Supreme Court's Concrete Injury Analysis, Sidney Balaban

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

“Zombie” debt collectors—third-party entities who purchase from creditors and attempt to collect on debts that have passed the statute of limitations periods—have become a particular nuisance and source of distress to the unsuspecting consumer. A serious problem arises in some states, such as Illinois, which allow for the limitations period to restart if the debtor began making payments again or promised to make payments, giving nefarious debt collectors the chance to trick consumers into renewed legal liability—a true zombification. Fortunately, in 1978, Congress passed the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA” or “the Act”) to “eliminate abusive debt collection …

Pierre Michel arrived in the United States from Haiti at three years old as a Lawful Permanent Resident (“LPR”). After developing substance abuse issues in his adolescence, Michel received several nonviolent criminal convictions and was detained in contemplation of his deportation. Nearly two years later, Michel was finally released after successfully petitioning for Cancellation of Removal. Michel had no opportunity to obtain his freedom sooner, despite his clear eligibility for relief. Like Michel, in 2003, student Sylvester Owino pled guilty to second-degree robbery without understanding the immigration consequences of his conviction. After serving over two years in prison, Owino …

Wake Up: How Application Of Garcetti To Public Educator Speech Harms Educators And Students Through The Lens Of Florida's Individual Freedom Act, Lindsay Mccarthy

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Nearly twenty of the nation’s states have enacted some kind of law that limits the teaching of controversial topics like race, gender, and politics. Within the last three years, these laws have become more commonplace as social movements like Black Lives Matter and #MeToo have brought topics like systemic racism and gender inequality to the nation’s attention. As the country becomes more polarized, state legislatures—typically conservative ones—have resorted to these censorship laws to fight back against the perceived indoctrination of children. The state that has gained the most notoriety for such laws is Florida. In 2022, Florida passed a …

The Collection Problem: How The Circuit Split On Pleading Standards In Securities Fraud Claims Undermines Federal Regulatory Goals, Lucas Immer

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The Great Depression is generally recognized as the greatest economic calamity in United States history. One of the Great Depression’s many causes was reckless financial speculation driven in part by financial fraud. In response to the crisis, Congress passed the 1934 Securities Exchange Act (“the Exchange Act”), which courts have long held creates a private right of action for plaintiffs who experience an economic loss due to reliance on a material misstatement surrounding the purchase or sale of a security. A prima facie claim for securities fraud under the Exchange Act requires a showing of scienter, defined as “a …

Stare Decisis And The 1l Classroom: Can Legal Reasoning Be Taught Without Judicial Respect For Precedent?, Mark C. Niles

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

I began my career as a law professor in 1998 and, in every year but one, since then I have taught at least one first-year required law school course. I have taught Civil Procedure each of these years and some version of a required Constitutional Law course in about half of them. I want to say just a little bit about stare decisis and its importance in our legal system from the perspective of a law professor teaching first-year students.

I have found that although teaching Civil Procedure involves a focus on a range of substantive issues including judicial …

Stare Decisis And Zombie Laws, Alicia Bannon Jul 2025

Stare Decisis And Zombie Laws, Alicia Bannon

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

In recent years, the Supreme Court has shown little interest in stare decisis—the principle that courts should honor precedent—as an animating value in constitutional interpretation. This has put many fundamental rights in a vulnerable posture. This Essay focuses on one underappreciated dimension of the decline in respect for stare decisis as it relates to fundamental rights: the relationship between stare decisis and what I will call, and what others have called, “zombie laws.”

Zombie laws are laws that were rendered inoperative by courts but never rescinded; for example, an abortion ban that became unenforceable after Roe v. Wade. …

The Chief Judge has been a friend to us for many years. It is an honor to host someone of her talent and someone in her position: the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

We’re going to have a conversation for the first part of the program, about judging, her work, and stare decisis.

But first, we need to meet you and hear a little bit about your background—where you are from—and the path that took you to the …
