Can comics effectively convey scientific knowledge about COVID-19 to youth? What types and how many sources of information did youth have about COVID-19 during the pandemic? How are sources of information associated with accurate COVID-19 knowledge? To answer these questions, we surveyed youth in grades 5–9 in a Midwestern United States school district in the winter of 2020–2021. The online survey used measures of COVID-19 knowledge and sources, with an embedded experiment on COVID-19 relevant comics. Guided by an integrated science capital and just-in-time health and science information acquisition model, we also measured level of science capital, science identity, and …

Alternate Emergency Application Environment, Dillon Amadeo, Nizam Anuar, Yohan Launay, Kiat Chuan Tan
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure describes computer-implemented systems and methods for providing an alternate application environment in emergency situations by allowing a user to use an entry mechanism that is for use in emergency situations (e.g., input an alternative PIN or emergency gesture) to enter a financial or banking application on a user computing device. The input of the emergency entry mechanism may display an alternative application environment that shows alternative information about the user’s accounts, prevents the transfer of funds to another entity, and initiates security measures while the user is in the alternative application environment. As a result, the safety …

Detecting Energy On Restricted Bands To Automatically Configure Device State, Craig Dooley
Defensive Publications Series
Smartphones and other mobile devices can be disruptive in certain contexts such as a play or concert. Users may fail to turn off their devices in such contexts or may not know the correct way to do so. Professional performances are often at venues where performance-related equipment transmits on restricted radio bands for reliable wireless communication necessary for the performance. With user permission, an existing radio in a user device is used to detect energy on restricted bands used for such communication. When energy is detected, it is indicative that the device is within range of a professional performance. With …
The Problem Of Mimicry And Presence In Ahmad Shawqi's Siniyah, Sami Ababneh, Yousef Hamdn
The Problem Of Mimicry And Presence In Ahmad Shawqi's Siniyah, Sami Ababneh, Yousef Hamdn
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This paper examines Ahmad Shawqi's Siniyah and Al-Buhturi's Siniyah from a critical perspective that views the relationship between these two works as a case of both mimicry and presence. Mimicry is an essential component of poetic practice that cannot be overlooked and is evident of one’s self-awareness in its present time and circumstances. This paper seeks to reevaluate and criticize this relationship in ways that might rejuvenate interest in poetic influence as the means of the latter poet to prove himself and his presence when compared to predecessor poets. This perception is based on the imitating poet’s fit as seen …

Acquisition Of The Liaison In French As A Foreign Language: Difficulty And Remedy, Saad Haddad
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
“Liaison is a phenomenon that aroused and continues to arouse a large number of researchers' interest because of its complexity and diversity. The studies on this subject often concern when and how different native and non-native speakers perform or do not perform the liaison in French. The difficulty posed by the phenomenon of liaison is even more evident among non-native speakers for whom such correspondence does not exist in the mother tongue”. (Mårtensson, 2013 : p 3). This study aims to map the difficulties of liaison encountered by Arabic-speaking learners in French as a Foreign language class. The results of …

Problems In Uttering French Nasal Vowels For Jordanian Learners Of French As A Foreign Language, Farouq Abu Duhair, Nail Munasel, Samer Al-Hamouri
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
"Un bon vin blanc" (A fine white wine), is a French sentence in which every French nasal vowel that will be discussed in this article: [œ̃ ], [ɔ̃], [ɛ̃], [ɑ̃] is represented. Nasal vowels are « produced by lowering the velum and allowing the air to pass outward through the nose » (Halle, Morris, et Clements 1983). This phenomenon is called nasalization. If students of French as a foreign language are not able to produce such nasal sounds, they will not be able to properly pronounce these French vowels. Students face several sorts of difficulties whilst trying to utter French …

Patient Factors Impacting Perioperative Outcomes For T1b-T2 Localized Renal Cell Carcinoma May Guide Decision For Partial Versus Radical Nephrectomy, Yash B Shah, Rishabh K Simhal, Kerith Wang, Hanan Goldberg, Costas D. Lallas, Thenappan Chandrasekar
Department of Urology Faculty Papers
There remains debate surrounding partial (PN) versus radical nephrectomy (RN) for T1b-T2 renal cell carcinoma (RCC). PN offers nephron-sparing benefits but involves increased perioperative complications. RN putatively maximizes oncologic benefit with complex tumors. We analyzed newly available nephrectomy-specific NSQIP data to elucidate predictors of perioperative outcomes in localized T1b-T2 RCC. We identified 2094 patients undergoing nephrectomy between 2019-2020. Captured variables include surgical procedure and approach, staging, comorbidities, prophylaxis, peri-operative complications, reoperations, and readmissions. 816 patients received PN while 1278 received RN. Reoperation rates were comparable; however, PN patients more commonly experienced 30-day readmissions (7.0% vs. 4.7%, p = 0.026), bleeds …
Fill And Dump Measurement Of The Neutron Lifetime Using An Asymmetric Magneto-Gravitational Trap, Alexander Komives, Et Al.
Fill And Dump Measurement Of The Neutron Lifetime Using An Asymmetric Magneto-Gravitational Trap, Alexander Komives, Et Al.
Physics & Astronomy Faculty publications
The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalysis of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. These have led to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy between the most precise measurements of the neutron decay rate producing protons in cold neutron beams and the most precise lifetime measured in neutron storage experiments. Measurements using different techniques are important for investigating whether there are unidentified systematic effects in any of the measurements. In this paper we report a new measurement using the Los Alamos asymmetric magneto-gravitational trap where the surviving neutrons are counted external to the trap using the fill …

Management Of Transgender Patients In Critical Care, L Flower, A Cheung, S Connal, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
As clinicians working in critical care, it is our duty to provide all of our patients with the high-quality care they deserve, regardless of their gender identity. The transgender community continues to suffer discrimination from the media, politicians and general public. As healthcare workers we often pride ourselves on our ability to safely care for all patients. However, there remains a distinct lack of understanding surrounding the care of critically ill transgender patients. This is likely in part because the specific care of transgender patients is not included in the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine’s, Royal College of Anaesthetists’, Royal …

Objective: The presence of carotid atherosclerosis reflects the overall atherosclerotic load and may predict cardiovascular and cerebrovascular accidents. Studies have reported risk factors for carotid atherosclerosis. However, few practical models have been established to predict carotid atherosclerosis risk. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate important features of carotid atherosclerosis and to propose a machine learning-based method for predicting carotid atherosclerosis in asymptomatic adults.
Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted using routine medical check-up data of individuals from January 2019 to January 2020. Pearson’s correlation analysis was performed to correlate the features. Then, features were selected by python’s feature-selection library and …

Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is the most severe form of male infertility and typically incurable. Defining the genetic basis of NOA has proven challenging, and the most advanced classification of NOA subforms is not based on genetics, but simple description of testis histology. In this study, we exome-sequenced over 1000 clinically diagnosed NOA cases and identified a plausible recessive Mendelian cause in 20%. We find further support for 21 genes in a 2-stage burden test with 2072 cases and 11,587 fertile controls. The disrupted genes are primarily on the autosomes, enriched for undescribed human "knockouts", and, for the most part, have …
Growth And Distribution: Revisting Solow’S Growth Models From The Perspective Of The Marxian Circuit Of Capital, Hee-Young Shin
Growth And Distribution: Revisting Solow’S Growth Models From The Perspective Of The Marxian Circuit Of Capital, Hee-Young Shin
Economics Faculty Publications
The aggregate production function used in Solow’s growth models assumes the constancy in relative income distribution between owners of capital and labor input. The paper discusses the validity of this fundamental assumption and attempts to identify the necessary condition for the balanced and equi-proportional growth of relative incomes from the perspective of the Marxian circuit of capital model. The analysis in this paper shows that the constancy and proportionality in the growth of two social class incomes are not consistent with real-world patterns of the capital accumulation process, in which the decision over capitalization of realized surplus value that determines …

The subset of plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) that coprecipitate with low-density lipoprotein (LDL-EVs) carry coagulation and fibrinolysis pathway proteins as cargo. We investigated the association between LDL-EV hemostatic/fibrinolysis protein ratios and post-acute myocardial infarction (post-AMI) left ventricular (LV) remodeling which precedes heart failure. Protein concentrations of von Willebrand factor (VWF), SerpinC1 and plasminogen were determined in LDL-EVs extracted from plasma samples obtained at baseline (within 72 h post-AMI), 1 month and 6 months post-AMI from 198 patients. Patients were categorized as exhibiting adverse (n = 98) or reverse (n = 100) LV remodeling based on changes in LV end-systolic volume …

Reducing Disparities In Postpartum Care Utilization: Development Of A Clinical Risk Assessment Tool, Sandi Tenfelde, Cara Joyce, Dina Tell, Lisa Masinter, Jena Wallander-Gemkow, Lindsey Garfield Dr.
Biostatistics Collaborative Core: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Introduction: Patients receiving care at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) have low postpartum care attendance. Perinatal morbidity and mortality disproportionately affect patients with low-income and are potentially preventable. The purpose of this study was to develop a clinical decision support tool to identify FQHC patients less likely to return for postpartum care. To accomplish this purpose, we evaluated established predictors and novel risk factors in our patient population.
Methods: This is a retrospective, secondary data analysis of 50,022 patients who received prenatal care past 24 weeks’ gestation in FQHCs between 2012 and 2017. The postpartum visit was defined using Healthcare …

In this manuscript we studied the relationship between WMH and biological age (B-age) in patients with acute stroke. We included in this study 247 patients with acute stroke recruited at Hospital del Mar having both epigenetic (DNA methylation) and magnetic resonance imaging data. WMH were measured using a semi-automated method. B-age was calculated using two widely used methods: the Hannum and Horvath formulas. We used multiple linear regression models to interrogate the role of B-age on WMH volume after adjusting for chronological age (C-age) and other covariables. Average C-age of the sample was 68.4 (±11.8) and we observed a relatively …

Mathematics Anxiety: Identity Work In A Gifted Prospective Elementary Teacher’S Mathematics-Related Personal Narratives, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr
Teacher Education
Previous studies have focused on negative physiological sensations and psychological emotions of mathematics anxiety experienced in real time. Similarly, prior research has noted that prospective elementary teachers (PSTs) may experience such feelings of distress while learning to teach mathematics in their teacher-preparation programs. Mathematics teacher educators have sought to reduce elementary PSTs’ mathematics anxiety by improving their mathematical content knowledge and discipline-specific pedagogical knowledge. But why might mathematics anxiety persist even after elementary PSTs have successfully completed such teacher-preparation coursework? Our case study of a female elementary PST, identified as gifted, illustrates how mathematics anxiety, when reinforced by personal narratives …

Forced Justice: The Kosovo Specialist Chambers, Sara L. Ochs, Kirbi Walters
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
The Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC), the court created to adjudicate war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo at the turn of the century, is the world’s newest hybrid tribunal. The KSC is classified as a hybrid tribunal because it ostensibly blends aspects of international and domestic law and resources. Upon examination, however, the KSC departs in critical ways from the traditional concept of a hybrid tribunal, representing an internationally dominated court with minimal local involvement. By detailing the history of judicial mechanisms employed to prosecute crimes committed during and in the aftermath of the Kosovo War from 1998-1999, …

Hypersonic Non-Equilibrium Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Analysis And Effect Of Underbelly Shape On A Conceptual Lifting Body Spaceplane, Oliver George Barretto
The Plymouth Student Scientist
A methodology is developed to analyse the effect of underbelly shape on the force coefficients and adiabatic wall temperature acting on a lifting body spaceplane at 30° angle of attack and three Mach numbers (=4, 10, 16) in air in the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver, Ansys Fluent. A general overview of hypersonic theory and phenomena is also presented. The effect of hypersonic flow on gas dynamics is considered using a two-temperature non-equilibrium energy model and species transport simulation of reacting gases in Ansys Fluent. No third-party research of note is found validating the two-temperature Ansys Fluent non-equilibrium energy …

An Investigation Into The Absence Of The Great White Shark (Carcharodon Carcharias) From British Waters, Max Harry Kimble
The Plymouth Student Scientist
In the last ten years, there have been over 100 reports of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in British waters, yet there has never been a confirmed sighting. British waters are home to the largest grey seal population in Europe and is less than 200 miles away from a known great white population. This coupled with the shark’s global distribution and preference for more temperate waters has left many wondering why there has not been a confirmed sighting of this species. To examine the suitability of British waters, four white shark’s migrations were mapped spanning nine years. Species distribution modelling …
Biochar Amendment Of A Sandy Loam Improves Wheat Growth Under Drought And Control Conditions, Toby Anderson Von Trampe
Biochar Amendment Of A Sandy Loam Improves Wheat Growth Under Drought And Control Conditions, Toby Anderson Von Trampe
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Drought stress is a major limiting factor in cereal crop growth. To meet the feeding requirements of an increasing population, cereal crop yields need to be significantly increased in a sustainable manner. Biochar is a charcoal-like substance derived from organic material. Here, the effects of biochar on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth and stress responses under drought stress conditions were determined. Biochar was applied at 5% (w/w) and stressed plants weren’t watered during the four weeks of drought treatment to establish the rate of water loss in the different soil treatments. drought significantly decreased plant height, stem thickness, number of …

Multiomics Approach Captures Hepatic Metabolic Network Altered By Chronic Ethanol Administration, Isin Tuna Sakallioglu, Bridget Tripp, Jacy Kubik, Carol A. Casey, Paul G. Thomes, Robert Powers
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Using a multiplatform and multiomics approach, we identified metabolites, lipids, proteins, and metabolic pathways that were altered in the liver after chronic ethanol administration. A functional enrichment analysis of the multiomics dataset revealed that rats treated with ethanol experienced an increase in hepatic fatty acyl content, which is consistent with an initial development of steatosis. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics data revealed that the chronic ethanol exposure selectively modified toxic substances such as an increase in glucuronidation tyramine and benzoyl; and a depletion in cholesterol-conjugated glucuronides. Similarly, the lipidomics results revealed that ethanol …
Fighting Words: Catalonia At The Language Instruction Crossroads, Jane Tien
Fighting Words: Catalonia At The Language Instruction Crossroads, Jane Tien
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
The schism between Spain and Catalonia obscures a struggle over the teaching language for non-linguistic subjects in Catalonia's public schools. The recent two decades decanted into Catalan society two Spanish Constitutional Court rulings mandating a Castilian-Catalan conjunctive instruction model—with Catalan as the "center of gravity"—and tasking the Catalan legislature with configuring that "center." Pleasing none and spurned by all, the Constitutional Court duology emboldened activist lower courts to bypass the Catalan legislature, while schools in Catalonia continued to teach almost exclusively in Catalan. With the Castilians alienated and the Catalans defiant, language instruction in Catalonia turned into a festering wound …

Roles Played By Nigerian Youtube Micro-Celebrities During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Aje-Ori Agbese
Communication Faculty Publications
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian social media micro-celebrities were prominent players in the dissemination of information. This study examines the roles that one group of Nigerian micro-celebrities, YouTube video bloggers (vloggers)—also known as “YouTubers”—played during the pandemic. The research analysed the contents of COVID-19-themed videos that 15 popular Nigerian YouTubers posted on their channels between 29 February and 5 August 2020. The study was guided by the two-step flow of communication theory, in terms of which information first flows from mass media to opinion leaders, who then, in the second step, share the information with their audiences. The …
