Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi) is a Lyme Disease causing pathogen that is transmitted via tick-bite by blacklegged (deer) ticks (Ixodes scapularis). These ticks tend choose hosts such as rabbits and mice to feed on, sometimes transmitting harmful pathogens to these animals such as B. burgdorferi, which cycles between rodents and large animals to complete its enzootic cycle. Humans are accidental dead-end hosts for B. burgdorferi. Those infected with B. burgdorferi can develop Lyme Disease, which includes symptoms such as neurological, cardiac, and joint-related complications which are exacerbated by increased feeding time on the host1. Due to the many negative affects …

Posters: 2022 Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The KRASG12D and TP53R172H mutations are the leading causes of pancreatic cancer, with the third deadliest cancer mortality rate. Majority of the pancreatic cancer research utilizes mouse models. Our lab is currently studying porcine as a suitable model to study pancreatic cancer due to the comparative anatomy and genomic similarities between humans and porcine. Our first approach to develop the porcine pancreatic cancer model was to orthotopically implant the transformed and mutated primary pig pancreatic epithelial cells into the pig pancreas. The second approach was using the Oncopig model with KRASG12D and TP53R172H genetic mutations. The …

A Mechanical Model Of Glenohumeral Stability, Shicheng Li Aug 2022

A Mechanical Model Of Glenohumeral Stability, Shicheng Li

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Research on shoulders of bats provides insight into the mechanisms of shoulder instability. Past research, although probing into the mechanical behaviors of the shoulders, does not provide quantitative analysis regarding the contribution of fibers to the stability of the shoulder. This report for Shicheng Li's independent study in Spring semester of 2022 includes a theoretical analysis of the interaction between the glenoid, humerus, and tendons. A Matlab program was developed for a physical model that simulates the glenohumeral system. Different tests with various parameters input show that the relationship between a external, constantly oriented force and the displacement of the …

Spatial Variation Of False Map Turtle (Graptemys Pseudogeographica) Bacterial Microbiota In The Lower Missouri River, United States, Joseph D. Madison, Madeline M. Butterfield, Drew R. Davis, Jacob L. Kerby

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Turtle populations around the world are continually confronted with changing environments that affect their ecology and conservation status. Among freshwater turtles, population dynamics are thought to be mediated by complex yet often cryptic causes. One recent direction of focus in addressing these causes is the turtle-associated microbiota. In turtles, the gut- associated microbiota is of exceptional interest due to its continual association with host species under changing conditions. Diet-based fluctuations and changes in microbial diversity may correspond to varying external environments at both the individual and population level. Environmental responses are of particular interest due to the anthropogenic changes that …

The Relationship Between Thalamic Morphology And Behavioral Features In Amnestic And Aphasic Variants Of Alzheimer's Disease, Holly Rochelle Winiarski Aug 2022

The Relationship Between Thalamic Morphology And Behavioral Features In Amnestic And Aphasic Variants Of Alzheimer's Disease, Holly Rochelle Winiarski

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The presence of AD pathology can result in diverse behavioral phenotypes, including the typical amnestic variant characterized by memory deficits, and an atypical aphasic variant characterized by language deficits. Previous research has identified unique cortical atrophy patterns in each phenotype, though less focus has been drawn to subcortical involvement. The current study sought to dissociate these behavioral phenotypes by characterizing their thalamic volume and shape features using high-dimensional brain mapping procedures. Relationships between brain metrics and specific language and memory deficits were also investigated in aphasic AD and amnestic AD, respectively. Method: Thalamic integrity was examined in aphasic AD …

Despite increasing availability and more successful interventional approaches to restore coronary reperfusion, myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury is a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. During myocardial ischemia, the myocardium becomes profoundly hypoxic, thus causing stabilization of hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIF). Stabilization of HIF leads to a transcriptional program that promotes adaptation to hypoxia and cellular survival. Transcriptional consequences of HIF stabilization include increases in extracellular production and signaling effects of adenosine. Extracellular adenosine functions as a signaling molecule via the activation of adenosine receptors. Several studies implicated adenosine signaling in cardioprotection, particularly through the activation of the Adora2a and Adora2b …

Increased Expression Of Interferon-Induced Transmembrane 3 (Ifitm3) In Stroke And Other Inflammatory Conditions In The Brain, Elisabeth Harmon, Andrea Doan, Jesus Bautista-Garrido, Joo Eun Jung, Sean P Marrelli, Gab Seok Kim Aug 2022

Increased Expression Of Interferon-Induced Transmembrane 3 (Ifitm3) In Stroke And Other Inflammatory Conditions In The Brain, Elisabeth Harmon, Andrea Doan, Jesus Bautista-Garrido, Joo Eun Jung, Sean P Marrelli, Gab Seok Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Microglia, the resident innate immune cells of the brain, become more highly reactive with aging and diseased conditions. In collaboration with other cell types in brains, microglia can contribute both to worsened outcome following stroke or other neurodegenerative diseases and to the recovery process by changing their phenotype toward reparative microglia. Recently, IFITM3 (a member of the "interferon-inducible transmembrane" family) has been revealed as a molecular mediator between amyloid pathology and neuroinflammation. Expression of IFITM3 in glial cells, especially microglia following stroke, is not well described. Here, we present evidence that ischemic stroke causes an increase in IFITM3 expression along …

Impacts On Fast-Start Performance: How Do Group Size And Habitat Degradation Alter The Escape Behavior Of A Schooling Coral Reef Fish?, Monica D. Bacchus Aug 2022

Impacts On Fast-Start Performance: How Do Group Size And Habitat Degradation Alter The Escape Behavior Of A Schooling Coral Reef Fish?, Monica D. Bacchus

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Escaping predation is essential for species survival, but prey must effectively match their response to the perceived threat imposed by a predator. Fish evaluate their surroundings using several sensory stimuli, including olfactory, visual, auditory, and mechanical cues. A range of taxa use the fast-start response to evade predators, including fishes, sharks, and larval amphibians. While the fast-start response (rapid bursts of swimming) is extensively studied in solitary fishes, the factors that mediate the collective escape response in schools of fish have historically been investigated far less. To address this knowledge gap, the collective escape behavior and individual escape performance of …

Preliminary Trials To Assess Bycatch Reduction Potential For Deep-Set Pelagic Longline Gear In The U.S. Atlantic Fishery, Sean T. Wilms Aug 2022

Preliminary Trials To Assess Bycatch Reduction Potential For Deep-Set Pelagic Longline Gear In The U.S. Atlantic Fishery, Sean T. Wilms

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The U.S. Atlantic pelagic longline fishery uses a shallow-set gear configuration to primarily target swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) at depths of around 75-100 m. However, the fishery has been the subject of several bycatch reduction regulations due to incidental catch and mortality of sea turtles, seabirds, marine mammals, and istiophorid billfishes. An alternative deep-set technique, used by the U.S. pelagic longline fishery based in Hawaii and several non-U.S. fleets, differs from the shallow-set pelagic longline gear by deploying a greater length of mainline per unit distance using a mechanical line shooter, resulting in a deeper catenary …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

A number of large-scale tests of a grillage system are summarized and reduced data are provided. The tests were completed in association with a Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) project for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD) whose goal was to better quantify behavior and limit states of steel bridge floor systems to refine longitudinal member (stringer) load- rating calculations. A number of tests focused on the behavior of the stringers resting on transverse members (a floorbeam), a system akin to a grillage. The system was proportioned with the expectation that stringer lateral-torsional buckling, a key steel …

Random Field Modeling Of Multi-Trait Multi-Locus Association For Detecting Methylation Quantitative Trait Loci, Chen Lyu, Manyan Huang, Nianjun Liu, Zhongxue Chen, Philip J Lupo, Benjamin Tycko, John S Witte, Charlotte A Hobbs, Ming Li

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Motivation: CpG sites within the same genomic region often share similar methylation patterns and tend to be co-regulated by multiple genetic variants that may interact with one another.

Results: We propose a multi-trait methylation random field (multi-MRF) method to evaluate the joint association between a set of CpG sites and a set of genetic variants. The proposed method has several advantages. First, it is a multi-trait method that allows flexible correlation structures between neighboring CpG sites (e.g. distance-based correlation). Second, it is also a multi-locus method that integrates the effect of multiple common and rare genetic variants. Third, it models …

Human Mobility, Hospitality, And Tourism Industries: A Perspective On Catastrophes, Asif Hussain Aug 2022

Human Mobility, Hospitality, And Tourism Industries: A Perspective On Catastrophes, Asif Hussain

Journal of Sustainability and Resilience

The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a significant reduction in peoples’ movements, migration and trade at both local and global levels. Lockdowns and travel restrictions all over the world have led to a rapid retrenchment of the world’s hospitality and tourism sector. This is not new. Historically, catastrophes impacted human mobility. Drawing from the historical connections between catastrophes, especially health crises, this paper highlights the impacts of catastrophes on the hospitality and tourism industries. This research shows that the relationship between pandemic and tourism is turbulent, and it explores the implications of the current health crisis for the travel industry …
