Sustaining long-term presence at the Moon will likely require innovative and cost-effective approaches for frequent and affordable payload return. NASA Ames Research Center and the Deep Space Logistics team at Kennedy Space Center (which manages the Gateway Logistics Services missions) have investigated the development of a small spacecraft-based sample return capability to complement the limited sample return capacity available with the early Orion missions. The goal is to demonstrate a cost-effective capability as part of an early Deep Space Logistics mission and provide up to 10 kg (~ 4 L volume) of scientific payload returned from the Gateway. The mission …

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) suffers from poor mechanical properties that limit its application in the bio-medical field. In this study, PMMA was reinforced with zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopar-ticles; subsequently, the hardness, porosity, biocompatibility, bacterial adhesion, and colonization of the reinforced PMMA with various oxide nanoparticles were characterized. The results of this study indicated that reinforced material inhibits bacterial growth and decreases bacterial adhesion by decreasing porosity and increasing PMMA hardness. Based on the findings, 3 wt% PMMA-ZrO2 and 3 wt% PMMA-ZrO2 -TiO2 composites significantly inhibited bacterial growth and adherence while maintaining hemolysis PT and INR and enhancing …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Glioblastoma is one of the most combative astrocytoma that is resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This resistance makes it very difficult to treat. However, researches have shown that nanoparticles especially C60 hydrofullerene have antioxidant and anticancer activity. The effect of C60 hydrofullerene in cancer has been extensively studied; however, the potential regulation of autophagy and modulation of the Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP) gene has not been addressed in glioblastomas. Glioblastoma U-373 cell was treated with 0.5 µM of C60 hydrofullerene and/or 1 mM of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 24 hours. This study demonstrated that C60 hydrofullerene and H2O2 significantly …

Global infection and mortality rates have soared to millions due to SARS-CoV-2 human-to-human transmission from via droplets which then declared as pandemic. This study examined the created cold plasma equipment (CPE) effectiveness in reducing COVID-19 transmission in a confined space. CPE sucked air using a fan in a test chamber then pushed it into a cold plasma reactor. The results indicated that it was able to terminate all SARS-CoV-2 variants along with bacteria and fungi indoors by keeping it turned on for 30 minutes’ minimum. CPE was proven as safe and effective to hinder virus transmission with the acceptable ozone …

In the current time there is an increase in the global interest concerning the atmospheric changes in the world, threatening for a vanishing to the botanical and biological environments from the surface of the globe. The increase in pollution phenomena due to the development and the exaggeration in utilizing the natural resources and using methods and agricultural techniques both botanical and animal, show an environmental imbalance in increasing CO2 in air and an increase in the non responsible human activities resulted an increase in the desertification area and the shortage in the rain quantity and the increase of the hidden …

Barbados, Bugs, And Blurred Borders: Reimagining The Myth Of European Colonization, Sabrina A. Hansen
Barbados, Bugs, And Blurred Borders: Reimagining The Myth Of European Colonization, Sabrina A. Hansen
The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal
This essay examines a moment in Richard Ligon’s A True and Exact History of the Island of Barbados (1657) where Ligon describes the insects on the island. By looking at the ways bugs like the caterpillars, ants, and chegoes of the island continuously blur the boundary between the human and insect world by invading the Europeans’ homes, plundering their food, and burrowing into their bodies, I argue that Ligon’s narrative uses insects as encoded emblems to address the fragile position of Barbados as an English colony and challenge the idea that the English held firm mastery over the land, environment, …

Collage As A Transdisciplinary Learning And Teaching Method In A Time Of International Crisis, James Green Dr
Arts and Design
This paper discusses the art and design method of collage and its efficacy as a trans-disciplinary learning and teaching technique that can be delivered remotely while living through a pandemic and the restrictions of a national lockdown. Collage is a method for making artworks by pasting together desperate elements, such as printed matter or digital images, to make a relatively unified image. Trans-disciplinary learning integrates perspectives from a range of different disciplines, going beyond a given students subject discipline, and should enable students to draw on these perspectives to gain a deeper understanding of their discipline. This was managed through …
Landscaping Wilderness In Hollywood Westerns And Brazilian Nordesterns, Michael Ashman
Landscaping Wilderness In Hollywood Westerns And Brazilian Nordesterns, Michael Ashman
Theses and Dissertations
In this comparative examination of cinematic representations of American and Brazilian wildernesses, I argue for the necessity of a transnational, postregional, and ecocritical approach to film studies. The way that the deserts of the American West are represented by Hollywood Western filmmakers reveal underlying ecological and political philosophies, and provide a productive contrast with representations of the sertão, a similarly arid biome in Brazil. Among other theoretical approaches, this study uses W. J. T. Mitchell’s idea of “landscape” as a verb to examine the formal devices by which filmmakers and audiences “landscape” these “wildernesses.” Using John Ford’s The Searchers (1956) …
Multiscale Modeling And Analysis Of X-Ray Windows, Microcantilevers, And Bioimpedance Microelectrodes, Kyle Grant Larsen
Multiscale Modeling And Analysis Of X-Ray Windows, Microcantilevers, And Bioimpedance Microelectrodes, Kyle Grant Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
X-ray detector windows must be thin enough to transmit sufficient low-energy x-rays, yet strong enough to withstand up to an atmosphere of differential pressure. Traditional low-energy x-ray windows consist of a support layer and pressure membrane spanning that support. Numerical modeling of several x-ray windows was used to show that both low- and high-energy x-ray transmission can be improved by adding a secondary support structure. Finite element analysis of the x-ray window models showed that the stress from a typical applied load does not exceed the ultimate strength or yield strength of the respective materials. The specific x-ray window models …

Examination Of 14-3-3 Interactors Identifies A Novel Mechanism Of Regulation For The Ubiquitin Binding Kinase Tnk1 That Can Be Targeted To Block Tumor Growth, Christina Marie Egbert
Theses and Dissertations
Decades of research have begun to identify oncogenic mut-drivers that are responsible for driving a large percentage of cancers. These high frequency mut-drivers have therapeutics in the clinic for patient treatment. However, there is another group of low frequency mut-drivers that fail to rise above the noise of the high frequently drivers. These low frequency drivers represent a group of genes with untapped potential for new targeted therapies. However, identifying these drivers can be difficult. This study focuses on identifying new functional phosphorylations using the phospho-docking protein 14-3-3. The family of 14-3-3 proteins have been linked to many oncogenic pathways …
Covid-19 In The United States As Affective Frame, John Protevi
Covid-19 In The United States As Affective Frame, John Protevi
Faculty Publications
In this paper I attempt to contribute to the developing field of “political philosophy of mind.” To render concrete the notion of “affective frame,” a social situation which pre-selects for salience and valence of environmental factors relative to a subject’s life, I conduct a case study of a deleterious socially instituted affective frame, which, during the early days of the COVID19 pandemic in the United States, produced individuated circumstances that came crashing down on “essential workers” who were forced into a double bind. We saw here an untenable and ultimately fatal situation that forced a choice between, on the one …
