Antiestrogen therapy (AET) is an alternative to cytotoxic chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer, yet the often short duration of response suggests mechanisms of resistance. We previously demonstrated that tumor microenvironment interleukin-6/leukemia inhibitory factor (IL6/LIF) cytokines induce tumor cell JAK-STAT signaling to promote cancer growth. Crosstalk between estrogen signaling and cytokine signaling has been reported. Therefore, we sought to characterize the impact of IL6/LIF signaling on estrogen signaling in epithelial ovarian cancer and investigate the efficacy of combination therapy. We first assessed patient tumors for cytokine expression and compared it with response to AET to determine clinical relevance. In vitro, we …

Capsaicin is a naturally occurring alkaloid derived from chili pepper which is responsible for its hot, pungent taste. It exerts multiple pharmacological actions, including pain-relieving, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and antioxidant effects. Previous studies have shown that capsaicin significantly affects the contractility and automaticity of the heart and alters cardiovascular functions. In this study, the effects of capsaicin were investigated on voltage-gated ion currents in rabbit ventricular myocytes. Capsaicin inhibited rapidly activated (IKr) and slowly activated (IKs) K+ currents and transient outward (Ito) K+ current with IC50 values of 3.4 µM,14.7 µM, …

Microbiomes often form specific functional associations with their hosts. Correlations between microbiome membership and states of host health and disease abound in many systems. However, there are few systems that allow for in depth functional studies that include precise manipulation and interrogation of both microbiome composition and host function. Recently the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans - an excellent genetic model organism for studying many fields of biology, including neurobiology and behavior, development, cell biology, and innate immunity - has proven to be a robust system to probe microbiome interactions and their effect on host physiology.

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century in the United States and worldwide. Several studies show that children with migrant backgrounds are more likely to be at risk of becoming obese. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of physical diseases and cognitive academic deficits in children and adolescents. The Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) population is one of the fastest-growing immigrant population groups in the United States. However, there are no studies exploring parental involvement in childhood obesity prevention programs among the MENA immigrant population.

Background: In both the general population and people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), physical exercise is associated with improved mental well-being. Moreover, there is evidence of the possible protection of physical activity against disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the question arises if acute or regular exercise has any impact on the immune system in PwMS. To answer this question, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on both plasma and serum cytokine levels (IL-6 and TNF-α) before and after acute and regular exercise among PwMS and compared to healthy controls.
Method: We performed an online search via PubMed, EMBASE, …

Anthropogenic Contaminants In Glacial Environments Ii: Release And Downstream Consequences, Dylan B. Beard, Caroline C. Clason, Sally Rangecroft, Ewa Poniecka, Kim J. Ward, Will H. Blake
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Anthropogenic contamination has been detected in glacial and proglacial environments around the globe. Through mechanisms of secondary release, these contaminants are finding their way into glacial hydrological systems and downstream environments, with potential to impact hundreds of millions of people who rely on glacial meltwater for water, food and energy security worldwide. The first part of our progress report outlined the sources and accumulation mechanisms of contaminants in glacial environments (Part I: Inputs and accumulation). Here we assess processes of contaminant release, pathways to downstream environments, and socio-environmental consequences. We reflect on the potential impacts these contaminants could have for …

Since the discovery of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, a vast majority of studies have been carried out that confirmed the worst outcome of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in people with preexisting health conditions, including diabetes, obesity, hypertension, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Likewise, diabetes itself is one of the leading causes of global public health concerns that impose a heavy global burden on public health as well as socio-economic development. Both diabetes and SARS-CoV-2 infection have their independent ability to induce the pathogenesis and severity of multi-system organ failure, while the co-existence of these two culprits …

Consciousness, Evaluation, And The Self-Organizing Brain
Consciousness, Evaluation, And The Self-Organizing Brain
Journal of Conscious Evolution
While evolution is guided by natural selection, it is internally driven by self-organizing processes. The brain encompasses these complementary forces and dynamics of evolution in both its structure and dynamics by embodying a historical record of the factors that have shaped it throughout its evolutionary past, as well as by being shaped by selective parameters in real time. Self-organization is evident in not only the brain’s structure and form, but also in the processes that support consciousness. From the convergence of complex structure and the novelty-generating dynamics of chaos that both characterize the brain arises the experience of explicit consciousness, …

A Framework For Studying Consciousness, Jeremy Horne
A Framework For Studying Consciousness, Jeremy Horne
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
Scholars have wrestled with "consciousness", one writer calling it the "hard problem". Some thirty-plus years after the Towards a Science of Consciousness, we do not seem to be any closer to an answer to "What is consciousness?". Seemingly irresolvable metaphysical problems are addressed by bootstrapping, provisional assumptions, not unlike those used by logicians and mathematicians. I bootstrap with the same ontology and epistemology applicable to everything we apprehend. Here, I argue for a version of the unity of opposites, a form of neutral monism. Something exists because of what it is not; nothing can exist by itself, singularities (analogous to …

Temperature Has A Unimodal Effect On The Functional Response Of Wolf Spiders, John Delong, Stella F. Uiterwaal, Alondra Magallanes
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The response of biotic interactions to changes in temperature will play a large role in determining the impact of climate change on ecological communities. In particular, how warming alters predator-prey interactions will influence population stability, food web connectivity, and the movement of energy across trophic levels. The functional response relates predator foraging rates to prey availability, and it is often predicted to increase monotonically with temperature, at least within the limits of predator function. However, some studies suggest that functional responses peak and then decline, and such a difference has critical implications for the effect of warming on ecological communities. …

Life depends upon the ability of cells to evaluate and adapt to a constantly changing environment and to maintain internal stability to allow essential biochemical reactions to occur. Ions and ion channels play a crucial role in this process and are essential for survival. Alterations in the expression of the transmembrane proteins responsible for maintaining ion balance that occur as a result of mutations in the genetic code or in response to iatrogenically induced changes in the extracellular environment is a characteristic feature of oncogenesis and identifies cancer as one of a constellation of diseases known as channelopathies. The classification …
