Through Pearl S. Buck's Writing: Women With Bound Feet In The Republic Of China, Zhihui Sophia Geng Oct 2022

Through Pearl S. Buck's Writing: Women With Bound Feet In The Republic Of China, Zhihui Sophia Geng

Asian Studies Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on Pearl Buck’s writing on women with bound feet in the Republic of China. In the 1920s and 1930s, a prominent theme in the would-be Nobel Prize Laureate Pearl Buck’s writing was the capricious fates of women with bound feet. Asia magazine published some of Buck’s earliest literary creations. Among them, “A Chinese Woman Speaks” (1926), “New Modes of Chinese Marriage” (1927), and “The First Wife” (1931 and 1932) gave sympathetic accounts of the mental and physical suffering of women whose hobbled feet became symbols of old fashions and ignorance in the new Republic. Through her keen …

The Coastal Monitor

There are a multitude of lessons learned from the last 3 years of the Covid-19 pandemic. But one truly stands out ...the total lack of understanding of the basic chemistry associated with the nitrogen cycle, which in Suffolk County, NY, continues to be declared as the “evil-nitrogen”. The major source of nitrogen into the water body comes from the atmosphere which is the predominate constituent of the air we breathe79% nitrogen. Nitrogen compounds contribution to eutrophication in freshwater (ponds & lakes) systems is legendary and, the concentration of nitrogen in marine waters has always been known as a limiting agent …

Local Action For Animals As A Stepping Stone To State Protections, Jo Anderson Oct 2022

Local Action For Animals As A Stepping Stone To State Protections, Jo Anderson

Law

Municipal ordinances can be an effective way to create animal protection laws at the local level, and could lead to great success at the state level. Passing laws at the local level allows people to help animals in their communities, while providing a model for other cities and jurisdictions. Local laws can also create momentum for statewide initiatives, which demonstrates a state’s strong commitment to protecting animals.

Legislation is a key avenue animal advocates use to effect change at scale, but there is not much research about how to choose tractable issues and lobby for them successfully. The goal of …

"Women, Life, Freedom": Media And Uprisings In Iran, Alexander J. Ham-Kucharski Oct 2022

"Women, Life, Freedom": Media And Uprisings In Iran, Alexander J. Ham-Kucharski

Student Work

This research analyzes the use of Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novels: Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood (2003) and Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return (2003) and her film Persepolis (2007) in regard to how media can teach history and political unrest and protestation, and how much of what is occurring in present day Iran of protests in regard to the death of Masha Amini and how the use of the hajib, while often a western feminist construct used to establish “orientalism “ of Muslim women, also is a deeply rooted metaphor of the restrictions of women in Iran and …

The Effect Of Combination Ovariectomy And D-Galactose Administration On Alzheimer's Animal Model, Faradila F., Yuliarni S., Rika S., Nur I. Liputo

Baghdad Science Journal

Background and purpose: Animal model helps researchers to evaluate new treatment plan for human and understand pathological mechanism involved in a development of disease. The use of rats as an animal model for Alzheimer's research has become a favorite among researchers. Rats are capable in mimicking Alzheimer disease due to their intelligence and quick adaptation to nature. At present there are several methods that can be used to induce Alzheimer's animals, but each method has advantages and disadvantages. We need to learn other methods that can provide many advantages and few disadvantages. The Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ-42) and Reactive Oxygen Species …

Black Capitalists In The Transatlantic Financial Industry, Rachel Laryea Oct 2022

Black Capitalists In The Transatlantic Financial Industry, Rachel Laryea

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is a study on the motivations and practices of willful Black participation in capitalism in the contemporary moment. With two sites of inquiry, Wall Street in New York City and Accra, Ghana, this ethnographic study examines how, and to what effect Black Capitalists successfully navigate financial institutions shaped by structural racism and covert inequality. I also track and assess the afterlives of Black professionals who leave Wall Street with an entrepreneurial posture as they sojourn across the Atlantic to create financial institutions of their own in Ghana. This migratory phenomenon is shaped in part by Ghana’s pivotal 2019 …

The Biogeochemical Legacy Of The Landscape Of Fear: Pumas, Vicuñas, And Nutrient Cycling In The High Andes, Julia Dina Monk Oct 2022

The Biogeochemical Legacy Of The Landscape Of Fear: Pumas, Vicuñas, And Nutrient Cycling In The High Andes, Julia Dina Monk

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Research on biogeochemical cycles has historically focused on plant and microbial activity; however, growing evidence suggests that animals play an important role in nutrient cycling. Predators may be especially important drivers of these ecosystem processes, as they influence the quantity, quality, and distribution of organic matter through their control of herbivore prey. The role of predators and their herbivore prey in cycling and transporting nutrients may be particularly important in arid ecosystems, where productivity is low and resources are scarce and spatially clustered. In these landscapes with high heterogeneity of resources and risk, large herbivores may transport and hasten the …

Paleontological Insights Into The Marine Silica Cycle, Sophie Westacott Oct 2022

Paleontological Insights Into The Marine Silica Cycle, Sophie Westacott

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Silicon is the second most abundant element in Earth’s crust and yet its seawater concentrations are far below saturation for any silicate mineral due to the activity of silicifiers, or organisms that make their shells, tests or spicules out of amorphous silica. On geologic timescales, the marine silica cycle is inextricably tied to the carbon cycle and global climate via the silicate weathering feedback and other pathways, and the concentration of silica in the ocean can vary the strength of these feedbacks. Silicifiers, primarily consisting of sponges, diatoms (phytoplankton) and radiolarians (zooplankton), are in turn affected by silica availability, and …

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman Oct 2022

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is a dissertation about unpacking packing. It uses the things that British and American explorers packed for their journeys as a lens for understanding how ideas of comfort shaped Anglophone exploration, colonialism, and capitalism in the long nineteenth century. It starts with a group of seemingly mundane objects that were ubiquitous in the packing lists of these explorers, like chocolate, raincoats, and tents. Tracing these objects from raw material to consumer commodity, the dissertation argues that explorers made these items essential for their comfort in “extreme” environments. In doing so, they naturalized concepts of physical and psychological comfort that …

Symptoms Of Schizophrenia And Their Relationship With Pharmacology And Learning Processes Across Species, Leah Fleming Oct 2022

Symptoms Of Schizophrenia And Their Relationship With Pharmacology And Learning Processes Across Species, Leah Fleming

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Schizophrenia is a debilitating psychiatric illness affecting roughly 1 percent of the global population. Psychiatry classifies schizophrenia, along with several other diagnoses, as a psychotic illness because patients experience a loss of touch with reality (psychosis). The current diagnostic criteria involve broad domains of symptoms including: Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior and negative symptoms (defined broadly by a lack of mental functioning). If a person experiences symptoms in two or more of these domains, they can be diagnosed with schizophrenia. This expansive definition makes schizophrenia difficult to investigate and treat. When examining the cause of schizophrenia, …

Institutional Fault Lines: Crises, Norms, And The Informal Foundations Of The State, Daniel Alexander Novick Goldstein Oct 2022

Institutional Fault Lines: Crises, Norms, And The Informal Foundations Of The State, Daniel Alexander Novick Goldstein

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of three research articles that analyze how informal factors impact the effectiveness and stability of a subset of political institutions. In the first chapter, I examine how social norms within government agencies impact state capacity. In the second chapter, I consider how norms that operate among citizens augment the survival of democratic institutions. Finally, the third chapter considers how crises affect checks-and-balances in separation-of-powers systems as well as the effectiveness of electoral institutions. Reversals of State Capacity: Norms and Political Disruption State capacity research generally focuses on improvements to a government's ability to deliver on its …

A Comparison Of Object Representations In The Primate Visual System And Convolutional Neural Networks, Viola Mocz Oct 2022

A Comparison Of Object Representations In The Primate Visual System And Convolutional Neural Networks, Viola Mocz

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the state-of-the-art artificial vision models for object recognition tasks. Their architecture is inspired by the organization of the ventral visual system of the brain, and although the way they are trained is not constrained by neural responses, the activations of artificial neural networks nevertheless show some similarities to activations of primate visual regions. Here, across three different studies, I compare the representation of objects in CNNs with that of the primate visual system in two different ways: (1) examining the relationship between object identity and non-identity information and (2) examining the representation of multiple objects. …

The Fall Of The Angels In Western Patristic Thought, Christopher T.M. West Oct 2022

The Fall Of The Angels In Western Patristic Thought, Christopher T.M. West

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation reconstructs patristic narratives of the angelic fall while historically contextualizing these literary projects and evaluating their theological ramifications. The project shows that patristic authors rehearsed diverse versions of events for the fall of the angels in response to exigencies of their own unique historical settings. Adapting Jewish narratives, some authors (e.g. Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian) recounted that the primal sin of the angels was “lust” prompted by a desire for human women. Others (e.g. Irenaeus and Tertullian) focused on the specific character of the Devil by relating that Satan’s fall occurred when he tempted Adam and …

Imprints Of Life: Rubbings From Carved Stones Of The Han Dynasty, Elinor G. Gass, Yan Sun

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Imprints of Life: Rubbings from Carved Stones of the Han Dynasty explores the connectivity between an individual’s character and the historical narratives celebrated in Han society; on display in Schmucker Art Gallery are rubbings taken from carvings on architectural components of burial chambers and above ground shrines in the western Shandong Province. These rubbings, selected from Gettysburg College’s Special Collections and College Archives, date from approximately the 1st to 2nd century and illustrate the values of Confucianism and Daoism, the two prevalent philosophies embraced at the time. Confucianism establishes rules of morality and piety, while Daoism focuses on the balance …

Genetic Quality: A Complex Issue For Experimental Study Reproducibility., Atsushi Yoshiki, Gregory Ballard, Ana V Perez Oct 2022

Genetic Quality: A Complex Issue For Experimental Study Reproducibility., Atsushi Yoshiki, Gregory Ballard, Ana V Perez

Faculty Research 2022

Laboratory animal research involving mice, requires consideration of many factors to be controlled. Genetic quality is one factor that is often overlooked but is essential for the generation of reproducible experimental results. Whether experimental research involves inbred mice, spontaneous mutant, or genetically modified strains, exercising genetic quality through careful breeding, good recordkeeping, and prudent quality control steps such as validation of the presence of mutations and verification of the genetic background, will help ensure that experimental results are accurate and that reference controls are representative for the particular experiment. In this review paper, we will discuss various techniques used for …

Animals, Quality And The Pursuit Of Relevance., Karen L. Svenson, Stephen D Krasinski, Michael Ellis, Nadia Rosenthal, Edison Liu, Kenneth H Fasman

Faculty Research 2022

In 2021, the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) announced recommendations to improve the reproducibility of biomedical research using animals. In response, The Jackson Laboratory faculty and institutional leaders identified key strategies to further address this important issue. Taking inspiration from the evolution of clinical trials over recent decades in response to similar challenges, we identified opportunities for improvement, including establishment of common standards, use of genetically diverse populations, requirement for robust study design with appropriate statistical methods, and improvement in public databases to facilitate meta-analyses. In this Perspective, we share our response to ACD recommendations, …

A Standardized Nomenclature For Mammalian Histone Genes., Ruth L Seal, Paul Denny, Elspeth A Bruford, Anna K Gribkova, David Landsman, William F Marzluff, Monica Mcandrews, Anna R Panchenko, Alexey K Shaytan, Paul B Talbert

Faculty Research 2022

Histones have a long history of research in a wide range of species, leaving a legacy of complex nomenclature in the literature. Community-led discussions at the EMBO Workshop on Histone Variants in 2011 resulted in agreement amongst experts on a revised systematic protein nomenclature for histones, which is based on a combination of phylogenetic classification and historical symbol usage. Human and mouse histone gene symbols previously followed a genome-centric system that was not applicable across all vertebrate species and did not reflect the systematic histone protein nomenclature. This prompted a collaboration between histone experts, the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) Gene …

Data-Driven Analyses In Obesity And Chemosensory Neuroimaging, Michael Charles Farruggia Oct 2022

Data-Driven Analyses In Obesity And Chemosensory Neuroimaging, Michael Charles Farruggia

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Data-driven functional connectivity analyses in the chemical senses are relatively uncommon, with current literature largely predominated by Psychophysiological Interaction (PPI), Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM), or Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques. The aim of this dissertation is to expand data-driven analyses in the chemical senses (and using chemosensory stimuli) to promote the use of techniques not based on a priori hypotheses or derived from potentially irreproducible literature.Chapter One details a systematic review of functional connectivity analysis in the chemosenses, which demonstrates that, out of 103 studies examined, the vast majority use hypothesis-driven techniques. Moreover, these studies comprise topics of olfaction, gustation, …
