Lumad Image-Making In Baboy Halas (2016) Through Intercultural Filmmaking, Katrina Ross A. Tan
Lumad Image-Making In Baboy Halas (2016) Through Intercultural Filmmaking, Katrina Ross A. Tan
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
This essay examines the processes involved in intercultural filmmaking, a mode of filmmaking practiced in the production of Baboy Halas (2016) directed by Bagane Fiola where the non-Indigenous filmmaker and the Indigenous community of Matigsalug collaborated in creating their screen images. It discusses how intercultural filmmaking allows the Lumad to enact cinematic agency in constructing their identities on screen. In addition to this, it outlines how this mode of production enables groups from different cultures to forge connections through filmmaking and cultivate ethical relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups. I draw from interview data with the filmmaker and an analysis …

Chemotherapy-Induced Toxicities And Their Associations With Clinical And Non-Clinical Factors Among Breast Cancer Patients In Vietnam, Sang M Nguyen, Anh T Pham, Lan M Nguyen, Hui Cai, Thuan V Tran, Xiao-Ou Shu, Huong T T Tran
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Understanding the burden and factors related to chemotherapy-induced toxicity is important in treatment planning for breast cancer patients. We conducted a prospective study among 396 newly diagnosed and chemotherapy-treated breast cancer patients recruited in two major cancer hospitals in northern Vietnam. Toxicities were captured through medical chart reviews and patient self-reports and graded using NCI CTCAE classification. Associations for sociodemographic and clinical factors with chemotherapy-induced toxicities during first-line chemotherapy were evaluated via multivariable logistic regression. Severe (i.e., grade ≥ 3) hematological (38.6%), and gastrointestinal (12.9%) toxicities were common. A pre-existing nephrological condition was significantly associated with the risk of severe …

Biomedical science is rapidly developing in terms of more transparency, openness and reproducibility of scientific publications. This is even more important for all studies that are based on results from basic semen examination. Recently two concordant documents have been published: the 6th edition of the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen, and the International Standard ISO 23162:2021. With these tools, we propose that authors should be instructed to follow these laboratory methods in order to publish studies in peer-reviewed journals, preferable by using a checklist as suggested in an Appendix to this article.

As humans, we are social beings who form strong relationships; when these relationships end, through death, divorce, or estrangement, it is natural to feel a sense of loss. This resource is meant to provide some ideas for agricultural producers (individuals and families) seeking to cope with and respond to losing a loved one. We also include information for agricultural producers experiencing other types of loss, such as losing the farm or livestock.

The Japanese Visual Media Graph project has created a knowledge graph for researchers working on popular Japanese visual media by combining data compiled by various enthusiast online communities. In order to open up the knowledge graph to researchers around the globe, the databases needed to be integrated legally. This article discusses the hurdles we encountered in this integration process and the solution we settled on to overcome these problems. We provide a brief look at the complexity of the legal protection afforded to databases, which we found to be an important source of problems even for communities that attempted to …

Dietary nitrate, found predominantly in green leafy vegetables and other vegetables such as radish, celery, and beetroot, has been shown to beneficially modulate inflammatory processes and immune cell function in animals and healthy individuals. The impact of increased nitrate intake on soluble inflammatory mediators in individuals with hypertension is unclear. We assessed whether the daily consumption of dietary nitrate via beetroot juice for 1-week lowered levels of circulating inflammatory markers in men and women with treated hypertension. Twenty-seven male and female participants were recruited to a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover trial. The effects of 1-week intake of nitrate-rich beetroot juice …

Physically transient forms of electronics enable unique classes of technologies, ranging from biomedical implants that disappear through processes of bioresorption after serving a clinical need to internet-of-things devices that harmlessly dissolve into the environment following a relevant period of use. Here, we develop a sustainable manufacturing pathway, based on ultrafast pulsed laser ablation, that can support high-volume, cost-effective manipulation of a diverse collection of organic and inorganic materials, each designed to degrade by hydrolysis or enzymatic activity, into patterned, multi-layered architectures with high resolution and accurate overlay registration. The technology can operate in patterning, thinning and/or cutting modes with (ultra)thin …

RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and mass-spectrometry-based proteomics data are often integrated in proteogenomic studies to assist in the prediction of eukaryote genome features, such as genes, splicing, single-nucleotide (SNVs), and single-amino-acid variants (SAAVs). Most genomes of parasite nematodes are draft versions that lack transcript- and protein-level information and whose gene annotations rely only on computational predictions.

Steroid Receptor Coactivator-3 Inhibition Generates Breast Cancer Antitumor Immune Microenvironment, Sang Jun Han, Nuri Sung, Jin Wang, Bert W O'Malley, David M Lonard
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
BACKGROUND: The tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) generated by cancer-infiltrating immune cells has a crucial role in promoting or suppressing breast cancer progression. However, whether the steroid receptor coactivator-3 (SRC-3) modulates TIME to progress breast cancer is unclear. Therefore, the present study evaluates whether SRC-3 generates a tumor-promoting TIME in breast tumors using a syngeneic immune-intact mouse model of breast cancer.
METHODS: We employed E0771 and 4T1 breast cancer in immune-intact syngeneic female C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice, respectively. SI-2, a specific small-molecule inhibitor of SRC-3, was administered daily (2.5 mg/kg) to E0771 and 4T1 breast tumor-bearing immune-intact mice. In addition, SRC-3 …

Immunohistochemical Localization Of Kisspeptin And Its Receptor In The Equine Ovary, Bryce M. Gilbert
LSU Master's Theses
Kisspeptin is recognized for its role as the gatekeeper of reproduction in most mammalian species. However, its role in regulation of reproduction at the ovarian level is poorly understood in the horse. In this study, ovaries from follicular phase, luteal phase, anestrous period, and mares treated with ECP-sulpiride were subjected to immunohistochemistry to characterize kisspeptin-10 (Kp10) and its receptor (Kiss1r) protein expression throughout each reproductive stage and follicle type. Kisspeptin and receptor staining was detected in all follicle types (primordial, preantral, and antral) throughout all reproductive stages, as well as oocytes, corpora lutea, and ovulation fossa. The pattern of Kp10 …

Defining Change Beyond A Binary System: Measurement And Interpretation Of Degrees Of Dysphonia Severity In The Individual And Across Voice Disorders, Lindsey Ann Parker
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Objective: The current study examined the sensitivity of voice outcome measures in discriminating cut-off thresholds between degrees of dysphonia severity, correlations to perceived dysphonia, and the impact of vocal task. Differences between cases of adductor spasmodic dysphonia, benign vocal fold polyps, and unilateral vocal fold paralysis were also explored.
Method: Auditory-perceptual judgments were performed by three raters for four diagnostic groups: Normal (n=14), AdSD (n=15), Polyp (n=15) and UVFP (n=15). Receiver operator characteristic area under the curve (AUC) analyses established screening and dysphonia severity (mild, moderate, severe) cut-off thresholds for auditory-perceptual visual analog scale (VAS) ratings and acoustic measures (f0_SD, …
Antiproliferative Effects Of Some Medicinal Plants On Colorectal Cancer: A Mini Review, Jamilah Borjac
Antiproliferative Effects Of Some Medicinal Plants On Colorectal Cancer: A Mini Review, Jamilah Borjac
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the highly prevalent and deadly cancers worldwide. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the conventional treatment modalities for CRC; however, they cause adverse side effects and can be associated with cancer resistance and relapse. Currently, traditional herbal medicine is becoming increasingly studied and used in combination with conventional treatments in CRC. Various medicinal plants have shown promising anticancer effects against CRC concomitant with negligible side effects. For example, Annona muricata (soursop), Chenopodium quinoa (quinoa), Matricaria chamomilla (chamomile), and Moringa oleifera (moringa) have shown remarkable antiproliferative effects against CRC both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, …

Imagining Lebanon With Islamic Art: The 1974 Exhibition At The Nicolas Sursock Museum, Sarah Sabban
Regards
Focusing on the first exhibition of Islamic art in Lebanon, organized by the Nicolas Sursock Museum in 1974, this article shows how the construction and the operationalization of the concept of Islamic art overlapped with postcolonial endeavors to foster national identity. By closely examining the making of the art exhibition and tracing material histories intersecting in Beirut, it elicits constructions of the national, the secular, and the spiritual via the notion of art. It contributes to the growing scholarship on the historiography of Islamic art, regional museums, and nation-building in the second half of the 20th century.

A Hierarchy Of Interactions Between Pathogenic Virus And Vertebrate Host, Robert Friedman
A Hierarchy Of Interactions Between Pathogenic Virus And Vertebrate Host, Robert Friedman
Faculty Publications
This review is of basic models of the interactions between a pathogenic virus and vertebrate animal host. The interactions at the population level are described by a predatory-prey model, a common approach in the ecological sciences, and depend on births and deaths within each population. This ecological perspective is complemented by models at the genetical level, which includes the dynamics of gene frequencies and the mechanisms of evolution. These perspectives are symmetrical in their relatedness and reflect the idealized forms of processes in natural systems. In the latter sections, the general use of deep learning methods is discussed within the …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Pseudomonas phages are increasingly important biomedicines for phage therapy, but little is known about how these viruses package DNA. This paper explores the terminase subunits from the Myoviridae E217, a Pseudomonas-phage used in an experimental cocktail to eradicate P. aeruginosa in vitro and in animal models. We identified the large (TerL) and small (TerS) terminase subunits in two genes ∼58 kbs away from each other in the E217 genome. TerL presents a classical two-domain architecture, consisting of an N-terminal ATPase and C-terminal nuclease domain arranged into a bean-shaped tertiary structure. A 2.05 Å crystal structure of the C-terminal domain revealed …
