Reading activities for junior high school students in Indonesia are carried out at school when the instructor requests that they study the learning topic being taught. Therefore, learners may become bored due to the thickness of the available books. Indonesian students are more likely to read when they encounter visualizations in images, and a small amount of text, commonly referred to as comics. Students like reading numerous popular comics, such as manga and webtoons, but it is exceptionally uncommon to discover a popular comic that teaches the subject of a specific discipline, particularly natural sciences, which has a challenging scientific …

Sex-Specific Role Of Myostatin Signaling In Neonatal Muscle Growth, Denervation Atrophy, And Neuromuscular Contractures., Marianne E Emmert, Parul Aggarwal, Kritton Shay-Winkler, Se-Jin Lee, Qingnian Goh, Roger Cornwall
Faculty Research 2023
Neonatal brachial plexus injury (NBPI) causes disabling and incurable muscle contractures that result from impaired longitudinal growth of denervated muscles. This deficit in muscle growth is driven by increased proteasome-mediated protein degradation, suggesting a dysregulation of muscle proteostasis. The myostatin (MSTN) pathway, a prominent muscle-specific regulator of proteostasis, is a putative signaling mechanism by which neonatal denervation could impair longitudinal muscle growth, and thus a potential target to prevent NBPI-induced contractures. Through a mouse model of NBPI, our present study revealed that pharmacologic inhibition of MSTN signaling induces hypertrophy, restores longitudinal growth, and prevents contractures in denervated muscles of female …

Book Censorship In Post-Tiananmen China (1989-2019), Yuwu Song
Book Censorship In Post-Tiananmen China (1989-2019), Yuwu Song
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Abstract: Censorship has become more prevalent in Chinese cultural and social life since the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. Modern commentary on Chinese censorship focuses on news media and Internet, but neglects print books, which is part of a broader crackdown on dissent. To fill this gap, the project aims to map the contours of book censorship in China during the past 30 years. The emphasis is on the Chinese authorities’ increasing attempts to dominate people’s minds under Xi Jinping, who ascended to power as the leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 2012. The project reveals different levels of …

Efficacy Of Paracrine Factors From Mesenchymal Stem Cells For Treating Biofilm-Infected Wounds In A Murine Model, Alison A. Smith, Charles F. Bellows
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: Chronic wounds are a serious medical condition affecting over 6 million people in the United States. Biofilms, which alter the host immune response and establish a microenvironment that prevents wound healing, are intimately associated with the development of chronic wounds. Current treatment options do not specifically target the underlying molecular mechanisms of biofilm pathology. Paracrine factors secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been demonstrated to play an important role in wound healing. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of the paracrine factors secreted from MSCs on reducing infection and accelerating wound closure in biofilm-infected …

Just Say No? Shareholder Voting On Securities Class Actions, Albert H. Choi, Stephen J. Choi, Adam C. Pritchard
Articles
The U.S. securities laws allow security-holders to bring a class action suit against a public company and its officers who make materially misleading statements to the market. The class action mechanism allows individual claimants to aggregate their claims. This procedure mitigates the collective action problem among claimants, and also creates potential economies of scale. Despite these efficiencies, the class action mechanism has been criticized for being driven by attorneys and also encouraging nuisance suits. Although various statutory and doctrinal solutions have been proposed and implemented over the years, the concerns over the agency problem and nuisance suits persist. This paper …

Where Is Home? Changing Conceptions Of The Homeland In The Surinamese-Javanese Diaspora, Rosemarijn Hoefte, Hariëtte Mingoen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In 1890 the first Javanese indentured labourers arrived in Suriname to work on the colony’s plantations. In total almost 30,000 indentured and free immigrants arrived in this small Caribbean colony. Fifty years later, at the end of the migration period, they formed more than one fifth of the population. Consequently, they constituted a substantial community which had to adapt to a different socio-cultural environment but, at the same time, managed to keep in touch with their homeland. The Javanese thus shaped their own cultural expressions and traditions in Suriname.
We attempt to analyse the processes of identity formation, adaptation, and …

Reproductive Traits And Change In Body Shape Of Neonates In The Oak Forest Skink, Plestiodon Lynxe, Manuel Feria-Ortiz, Uri Omar García-Vázquez, Carlos Joaquín Pavón-Vázquez, Adrián Nieto-Montes De Oca
Publications and Research
Reproductive traits are critically important for understanding how organisms adapt to their respective environments. In this study, we provide information on relative litter mass (RLM) and other litter and neonate related characters of nine female Plestiodon lynxe captured in the field. We also recorded seven body dimensions in 16 neonates and 15 two-month juveniles, and on the basis of these dimensions we compared the body shape of these two age classes to detect changes in the proportions of body parts. The average litter size (4.55) is larger than that found in other viviparous species of Plestiodon, but smaller than …

Investigating The Relational Element Of Trust In Teacher-Principal Relationships: An Autoethnographic Case Study, Angela Bradley
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This autoethnographic case study was designed to investigate the relational aspect of trust, a characteristic of servant leadership, in the teacher-principal relationship. This trusting bond is an often overlooked, foundational element of a school’s success. I examined the role that trust plays in enhancing a school’s culture and how trust is established and maintained among one principal and teachers under my supervision. In addition, as researcher, I sought to uncover specific indicators that trust was present on a school campus. Finally, I sought to examine trust’s effects on collaboration and organizational commitment.
Through weekly reflections, I sought to examine my …
Steps Towards Liberation For Low-Income Black Residents Through Anti-Racist And Counter-Racial Capitalist Community Development Practices, Natasha Moodie
Steps Towards Liberation For Low-Income Black Residents Through Anti-Racist And Counter-Racial Capitalist Community Development Practices, Natasha Moodie
Theses and Dissertations
Racial capitalism has historically and systematically disenfranchised Black residents in the United States of America. Racial capitalism perpetuates the racial wealth gap and continues to inhibit Black residents from accumulating wealth. I argue that the community development field must implement practices that address the disenfranchisement of Black residents by the systems of racial capitalism. This research aims to highlight community development processes and practices that counter the effects of racial capitalism on low-income Black residents. I conducted a case study on the City and County of San Francisco due to their anti-racist approach to housing and community development, specifically focusing …

Of Mites And Brains: Ectoparasitism In Nestlings Alters The Development Of Song Control Nuclei In European Starlings, Elliot Parker Lusk
Theses and Dissertations
The developmental stress hypothesis suggests that birdsong can reflect the current condition and developmental history of a songbird. Developmental stressors such as food restriction or ectoparasitism can hinder normal song development, leading to altered song quality in adulthood. Previous research has demonstrated that early food restriction results in reduced growth of song control nuclei, which may account for the effects of early food restriction on adult song quality. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of early ectoparasitism on birdsong have not been directly investigated. In this study, we examined the development of song control nuclei in European starling (Sturnus …

Architecture As A Projection Of Multiplicities, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
Architecture As A Projection Of Multiplicities, Kristanti Dewi Paramita
ARSNET
The architectural discussion of multiplicity moves beyond the preoccupation with architecture as a fixed, conclusive, and eternal entity. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET investigates the multidimensionality of architecture. The explorations in this issue span from the discussion of multi-layered meaning and temporalities of architecture, to the dynamic representation and spatial operation of multiplicities. Through inquiries on multiplicity-driven design methods, this issue projects the expanded and open field of architecture, appreciating the different forces and processes of society.

Spatialising Time: Perceiving Multiple Layers Of Time In Narrative Environment, Kezia Nathania, Arif Rahman Wahid
ARSNET
There is no escape from time; that includes architecture which dominantly discusses the space. This paper aims to explore more about our understanding of the various times within space and its corresponding stories. Notably, this study looks at the context of the narrative environment where stories are imbued in space to enhance their engagement with the audience. Time in a narrative is presented through the narrated time and the real-world time where the audience of the narrative perceives it. Both types of time can be overlapped, whether the audience is consciously aware of that or not. Two case studies are …

Extensive experimental and human-derived evidence suggest that misfolded Aβ particles spread similarly to infectious prions. Moreover, peripheral administration of Aβ seeds accelerates brain amyloidosis in both susceptible experimental animals and humans. The mechanisms and elements governing the transport of misfolded Aβ from the periphery to the brain are not fully understood, although circulation and retrograde axonal transport have been proposed. Here, we demonstrate that injection of Aβ seeds in the tongue, a highly innervated organ, substantially accelerates the appearance of plaques in Tg2576 mice. In addition, the extra-nasal exposure of Aβ aggregates increased amyloid pathology in the olfactory bulb. Our …
