Deep Iterative Convolutional Neural Network For Face Image Super-Resolution, Hein Htet Aung
Deep Iterative Convolutional Neural Network For Face Image Super-Resolution, Hein Htet Aung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Face images are often used today for many purposes, including facial identification and recognition. Face identification is used in security to trace crimes. The face application performs poorly due to the camera's low quality and environmental degradation issues. In this thesis, we explore face image super-resolution, which raises low-resolution to high resolution images. We proposed a deep iterative convolutional neural network using attention mechanisms and spatial feature transformation for face super-resolution. The input low-resolution image is enlarged into a super-resolution face image. Then, the image has repeatedly estimated the alignment to enhance the super-resolution image. The experiment was conducted on …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Bone tissue engineering is a therapeutic approach for large bone defects. It is being studied to create efficient bone substitution material. However, the autograft with consequence of multiple morbid sites is still a gold standard. This study aimed to use surface modified hydroxyapatite nanoparticle on a 3D-printed tricalcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite (TCP/HA) scaffold to deliver miRNA-302a-3p to enhance bone regeneration as a novel approach for bone tissue engineering. Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA-NPs) were created with hydrothermal method and surface modified with cationic molecule 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or poly2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA) to enhance miRNA condensation and cellular uptake. The biocompatibility, miRNA condensation ability, cellular uptake …

Micro-Computed Tomography Analysis Of Bone Regeneration Using Mrna Encoding Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 With Implant Placement In Rat Femur, Nopparada Lawtrakulngam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) has a potential for enhancing bone regeneration and osseointegration around implant materials. However, the drawback of rhBMP-2 protein delivery is instability. Therefore, high doses of rhBMP-2 need to be used clinically, which results in higher costs and more side effects. Although gene-based therapy, can overcome these limitations. Recent clinical studies on BMP-2 mRNA regarding bone regeneration around implant materials are lacking. This study aims to investigate the differences in bone regeneration after implant placement with or without mRNA encoding BMP-2 (m1ᴪ-BMP-2 mRNA) in micro-computed tomography analysis after implant placement in rat femur defects. Forty implant titanium …

Human Epidermal Growth Factor Release From Hyaluronic Acid-Based Platforms Towards In Vitro Expansion Of Salivary Gland Cells, Toan Phan Van
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Off-the-shelf recombinant growth factors are increasingly used as signaling cues to optimize organoid biofabrication and shorten the in vitro culture time. These factors are mainly produced in prokaryotic systems but lack post-translational modifications. To overcome such limitations and the high production costs related to these common systems, plant molecular farming is a novel, easy adaptable and feasible alternative. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a known signaling cue essential for epithelial organogenesis and organoid biofabrication particularly in exocrine glands. This study aims to develop an EGF delivery in vitro platform with Nicotiana benthamiana plant-derived EGF (P-EGF) encapsulated on hyaluronic acid/alginate (HA/Alg) …

Effects Of Nutritional Therapy On Nutritional Status In Patients Undergoing Orthognathic Surgery: A Randomised Clinical Trial, Naratorn Prachasartta
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Orthognathic surgery can limit oral intake postoperatively, leading to the loss of weight and muscle mass, which can weaken the immunity. To ensure proper perioperative care, it is crucial to provide adequate nutrition and mitigate surgical stress-induced catabolism. However, research on nutrition therapy for orthognathic surgery patients is limited. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the nutritional status of patients who received nutritional therapy. Thirty-four patients were randomly assigned into two groups: one receiving nutritional counselling only and the other receiving nutritional counselling with an oral nutritional supplement. We collected data on weight, muscle mass, fat mass, handgrip strength, biomarkers, …

Effects Of Thai Silk Fibroin Content On Properties Of Bioactive Glass-Silk Fibroin Hybrid Scaffolds, Ayuth Vejpongsa
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Hybrid scaffolds of bioactive glass (BG) and silk fibroin (SF) were fabricated. 70S30C (70% mol Si, 30% mol Ca) BG is a ceramic biomaterial with natural bone bonding and osteoconductivity potentials. SF is a natural polymer from the silk cocoon of bombyx mori with many desirable properties for tissue engineering applications. Hybridisation between these two biomaterials could mitigate the brittle characteristic of ceramic, enabling the scaffold to resist cyclic load better. This study varied the ratio between BG and SF (BG:SF; 100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, 0:100) and characterized the scaffolds, noting the difference between the scaffolds as a result …

The Study On Anti-Cancer Effects Of Zoledronic Acid In Anti-Hormonal-Resistant Breast Cancer Cells, Patthamapon Adchariyasakulchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Approximately 25-30% of breast cancer patients reported being unresponsive to tamoxifen treatment. Thus, the treatment of ER-positive breast cancer is limited to only some available groups of drugs. Zoledronic acid (ZA) is the third generation of bisphosphonates. This drug is currently used to treat osteoporosis patients, including postmenopausal and steroid-induced osteoporosis. ZA has been reported anti-cancer activity in several types of cancer. However, the effect of ZA has never been investigated in anti-hormonal-resistant breast cancer. Thus, our study aimed to investigate the anti-cancer activity of ZA on anti-proliferation, anti-migration/invasion, and the combined effect of ZA with fulvestrant in anti-hormonal resistant …

The proposed sensor combined the innovative disposable paper-based immunosensor and cost-effective plant-based anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody, extracted from Nicotiana benthamiana. The cellulose nanocrystal was modified on screen-printed graphene electrode to provide the COOH functional groups on electrode surface, leading to the high ability for antibody immobilization. The quantification of the presence receptor binding domain (RBD) spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 was performed using differential pulse voltammetry by monitoring the changing current of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox solution. The current change of [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- before and after the presence of …

Cross-species infectious disease transmission, especially between humans and wildlife, is increasing during the global warming. Tuberculosis (TB) is an air-borne infectious disease that can be transmitted from humans to non-human primates (NHPs), however, no report of TB prevalence in free ranging NHPs that highly interacted with humans in Thailand was published. Thus, this study was conducted and separated into 3 phases. Phase I, active TB in 1,836 free-ranging macaques including 6 rhesus (Macaca mulatta; Mm), 23 common long-tailed (M. fascicularis fascicularis; Mff), and 3 Burmese long-tailed (M. f. aurea; Mfa) macaque populations throughout Thailand was assesses. Monkeys were captured, anesthetized, …

Photo-based identification apps for mobile devices have grown in popularity across many fields of organismal biology. While studies have shown that these apps show promise in fields such as botany and ornithology, there is much skepticism surrounding their accuracy and usefulness in entomology. While providing these apps with photos of high quality will undoubtedly lead to the highest accuracy rates, often users submit photos of average quality, e.g., in poor lighting, out of focus, from far away, etc. To quantify realistic accuracy rates of photo-based insect identification apps, this study analyzed three popular apps – Seek, Picture Insect, and Google …

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic strategy for the management of pest species. It is a framework that relies on scientifically informed decisions to identify and remediate a pest problem in a way that minimizes harm to the environment, human health, and the economy (Dara, 2019). The term pest is broadly defined not just as a nuisance, but as any organism that has detrimental effects to a resource or public health and that exists at a population level that exceeds a threshold of economic damage. This encompasses invertebrates (such as insects, nematodes, and mites), vertebrates, plant pathogens, diseases, and …

Entomology is the study of insects. Insects are the most numerous animal group on the planet and therefore the field of entomology is further divided based upon insect groups. Butterflies and Moths belong to the insect group Lepidoptera. An entomologist who studies butterflies and/or moths is called a Lepidopterist. Butterflies are a special group of insects because they are not only studied by entomologists, but they are also studied by people called citizen scientists. Citizen science is the casual participation in gathering of data about anything relating to science. Anyone who uses the app iNaturalist is a citizen scientist because …

Natural products are small organic compounds synthesized by living organisms including plants, animals, and microbes. These fall into one of two categories, primary metabolites are required for survival, but secondary metabolites usually play a more accessory role. Extracts from organisms have proven to be useful to humans throughout history. Prior to evidence-based western medicine practices, natural products were the only source of medicine and remain as a treatment source for underdeveloped nations. Today, natural products have either been approved by or have served as the template for many FDA approved drugs. Based on a survey of all FDA approved drugs …

Article 8.9 CETA on “Investment and Regulatory Measures” is at the centre of continuous and vigorous debate on how to ensure a proper balance between private business interests and the prerogative of States to regulate public welfare issue. The concerns expressed in the debate on the right to regulate are well-known. International investment agreements (IIAs) came under criticism due to their substantive protection standards, whose language is perceived as lacking in precision; as a consequence, they deliver too little policy flexibility. The protection standards together with the investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) system, moreover, afford high levels of discretion to the …

Although the black soldier fly frass fertiliser (BSFFF) is globally recognised as a promising and potential high-quality organic fertiliser, there is inadequate information on its impact on the growth performance and nutritional status of maize. Furthermore, no information exist on their combination with mineral fertiliser (NPK) as well as economic impact on maize production. This study evaluated the comparative impact of BSFFF, NPK and commercial organic fertiliser (Evergrow®) on growth, nitrogen use efficiency, yield, nutritional quality, and profitability of maize under greenhouse conditions. The treatments included: (1) sole application of BSFFF, conventional compost of brewers’ spent grain (BSG), Evergrow, and …

The current global platelet supply is often insufficient to meet all the transfusion needs of patients, in particular for those with alloimmune thrombocytopenia. To address this issue, we have developed a strategy employing a combination of approaches to achieve more efficient production of functional megakaryocytes (MKs) and platelets collected from cord blood (CB)-derived CD34+ hematopoietic cells. This strategy is based on ex-vivo expansion and differentiation of MKs in the presence of bone marrow niche-mimicking mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), together with two other key components: (1) To enhance MK polyploidization, we used the potent pharmacological Rho-associated coiled-coil kinase (ROCK) inhibitor, KD045, …

Creativity is considered one aspect of intelligence. Including creativity allows for more room for expression (e.g., participants can respond with movement instead of written or verbal responses) than in standard intelligence assessments. The Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT; Torrance, 1974) are the leading method of assessing creative abilities in school-aged humans and above. To assess creativity in young humans and nonhuman animals, modifications must be made to facilitate nonverbal responses. In the current study, a cross-species comparison was conducted between preschoolers and bottlenose dolphins to examine responses to a modified creativity task in which both species were trained to …

Regenerative medicine (RM) is changing how we think and practice transplant medicine. In regenerative medicine, the aim is to develop and employ methods to regenerate, restore or replace damaged/diseased tissues or organs. Regenerative medicine investigates using tools such as novel technologies or techniques, extracellular vesicles, cell-based therapies, and tissue-engineered constructs to design effective patient-specific treatments. This review illustrates current advancements in regenerative medicine that may pertain to transplant medicine. We highlight progress made and various tools designed and employed specifically for each tissue or organ, such as the kidney, heart, liver, lung, vasculature, gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas. By combing both …

Autophagy is a catabolic process that degrades cytoplasmic constituents and organelles in the lysosome, thus serving an important role in cellular homeostasis and protection against insults. We previously reported that defects in autophagy contribute to neuronal cell damage in traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Recent data from other inflammatory models implicate autophagy in regulation of immune and inflammatory responses, with low levels of autophagic flux associated with pro-inflammatory phenotypes. In the present study, we examined the effects of genetically or pharmacologically manipulating autophagy on posttraumatic neuroinflammation and motor function after SCI in mice.
